Agency | Kolkata Ex-servicemen in West Bengal can now dial 1904 to get any medical help or even for buying provisions from the canteen. Former Army Chief General Shankar Roy Chowdhury today inaugurated the 24/7 veteran helpline ‘VEcare 1904’ at Fort William, the headquarters of Army’s Eastern Command for former personnel of the Army, Air Force and Navy.

Jat quota stir continues on lowkey note

The prosecution in 2002 Gulberg housing society massacre case on Monday sought death penalty or life imprisonment till death for all the 24 convicts, calling the attack ‘barbaric and inhuman’ even as a special court deferred further hearing on sentencing to June 9. Pleading for maximum punishment, the prosecution said capital punishment could be considered by the court or the convicts be sent to jail and ordered to remain there till their

last breath. As arguments over the quantum of sentence that lasted for over two-and-a-half hours remained inconclusive, the special SIT court judge P B Desai adjourned further hearing in the case to Thursday. The court had on Friday convicted 24

and acquitted 36 others, while dropping conspiracy charges in the killings of 69 persons including former Congress MP Eshan Jafri in Gulberg housing society on February 29, 2002 in post-Godhra riots when Narendra Modi was Gujarat Chief

Eknath Khadse’s fall, it inflicts political damage on the party too..?

In resigning from the Maharashtra cabinet, Eknath Khadse has done the honourable thing. Now the onus is on the state government to probe the allegations against Khadse and indict or exonerate him, based on the findings. Over the past few weeks, Khadse, once a chief ministerial aspirant, and then the de-facto No.2 in the Maharashtra government, has witnessed a precipitous fall in his fortunes. An ethical hacker who accessed Pakistani telecom servers alleged that Khadse’s phone number figured multiple times in the call detail records of gangster Dawood Ibrahim’s wife. Khadse claimed that he was not using that number. Then an aide, Gajanan Patel, was arrested for allegedly demanding a Rs30 crore bribe to transfer ownership of a plot of land in Thane. The last straw was the revelation that Khadse’s wife and son-in-law had purchased a three-acre plot near Pune for Rs3.75 crore when the market rate was nearly Rs31 crore. Soon the industries ministry questioned this land deal claiming that the plot was acquired by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation. Along the way, a number of other acts by Khadse as revenue minister revealed his overt interest in that land deal. The charges against Khadse are very serious and there was no way the central leadership could have overlooked the allegations, unlike those made against Sushma Swaraj or Vasundhara Raje. It involved corruption, impropriety, conflict of interest, and connections with an underworld figure. The BJP had stormed to power in Maharashtra after the Congress-NCP combine found itself enmeshed in a string of corruption scandals. Alongside economic growth and creating jobs, a tough stance on anti-corruption continues to be among Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s primary slogans. It was easier for the Prime Minister to support Swaraj and Raje because the charges against them were relatively minor and were restricted to conflict of interest and impropriety. There was no evidence that they had benefitted from their alleged links to Lalit Modi. But in Khadse’s case, the link between his revenue ministry and the shady land deals of his inner circle was too blatant to be condoned. By forcing Khadse to quit promptly, the BJP can also blunt the attacks it has faced from ally, Shiv Sena, and the opposition parties. Khadse’s exit was also necessary because of the crucial portfolios he held. The state is in the grip of drought conditions and an embattled agriculture minister can hardly be expected to provide a reprieve to farmers or the rural populace.

I hope they make this film tax free so that people can watch this for less money because it is telling something that you need to know,” said Shahid. Olympic trial: Delhi High Court dismisses Sushil Kumar’s plea Agency | New Delhi Delhi High Court on Monday dismissed the petition of two-time Olympic medallist wrestler Sushil Kumar seeking directions to Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) to hold selection trials to decide who will represent India in the 74 Kg freestyle category at the Rio Olympics. Justice Manmohan said though Sushil Kumar is a “legendary” wrestler, but WFI’s contention that Narsingh Pancham Yadav is better in 74 kg category cannot be termed as “unreasonable” or “perverse”. The court also observed that Sushil Kumar has himself participated in previous Olympics without going through selection trials before the sporting event. Meanwhile, the High Court issued notice to WFI Vice President

Raj Singh asking him why perjury proceedings should not be initiated against him for giving false affidavit before it. The court also said since the Olympics is scheduled in August, there is a high probability that the wrestlers might sustain injuries if the selection trial is conducted now. The court’s order came on the plea moved by 32-yearold Sushil Kumar who had sought a selection trial to decide who will represent the country in the 74 kg category at

Rio Olympics 2016. The WFI had opposed his plea saying 26-year-old Narsingh was a better bet compared to Sushil, who had participated in 66 kg category earlier. WFI had said that Yadav had secured a berth for this category at Rio by winning a bronze medal in world wrestling championship held last year. Yadav’s counsel had also opposed Sushil’s plea and told the court that the athlete who secures a berth represents the country in the Olympics.

SPORTS ROUNDUP Indian bodybuilder Manohar Aich dies at the age of 104

• Manohar Aich died on Sunday from health issues related to his age. He was 104 when the former Mr. Universe passed away Agency | Kolkata

Manohar Aich, a celebrated Indian bodybuilder and former Mr. Universe, has died in Kolkata. He was 104. Aich’s son said his father died on Sunday from health issues related to his age. He is survived by his four children. Aich, who grew up as a puny youngster, overcame many hurdles,

including poverty and a stint in prison, to achieve bodybuilding glory. He won the Mr Universe title in London in 1952 and returned a hero to India, where many took up bodybuilding inspired by his success. He also won several titles when competing in the Asian Bodybuilding Championships. He was known

as the “Pocket Hercules” due to his 4 foot, 11 inch (150 centimeter) frame. Aich often told his fans that the secret to his long life was his ability to take his troubles lightly and remain happy during difficult times. That, and a simple diet of milk, fruits and vegetables along with rice, lentils and fish kept him healthy, he said.

there is an opportunity for him to give it a shot, he would grab it. And by opportunity, he means the final Olympic Qualifier in Venezuela, which has been thrown open to pro boxers from around the world. “I won’t at all be happy, if he wants to go there. As I see it, there is no time. Of course he is his own man, he has his own mind but that cannot hinder with what we have

planned for him because it’s taken a year to reach where he has. He has contractual obligations with us,” Warren, who heads the Queensberry Promotions -- a top boxing promoter in the UK, told PTI during an interaction. “If Vijender wins on July 16, he will enter the top-15 of the WBO rankings. There were genuine doubts whether Aamer, who served a custodial sentence in UK

Aamer has been named in the Pakistan’s touring party for a four-Test series starting next month, and all eyes will be on the extremely talented pacer who has fought all odds to make it back to international cricket. Some men are destined for greatness, and some men work really hard for it. But Aamer’s case has been typically different. As an 18-year-old who had the batsmen wanting to not face him, he was touted as one of the greats-inmaking. The comparisons with the legendary Wasim Akram were right in tone, but perhaps too early.
