Four of them were foiled and eight militants were neutralised by the security forces . On 27 July, three terrorists in army uniforms opened fire on a bus and then attacked the

Rupani said the passengers will be able to know about the real time location of the buses as constant announcement and their positio will be displayed through the GPS. He said

tender has already been floated to invite potential bidders for the GPS project. GSRTC Vice Chairman and Managing Director Pankaj Kumar said the system is likely to be installed on other buses after considering the experience of express busses. “It will be based on our experience of the express buses and we will decide further upon that,” he said on a query on whether the GPS system will be installed in other buses. When asked if the GPS will be utilised for nav-

igation purpose by the GSRTC drivers, Kumar said, “the facility (of navigation) will be there and if the need arises, we will certainly use it.” Interestingly, Patel today flagged off a bus from the city to Rajkot while showing a saffron flag instead of showing a green flag, a fact that Rupani also mentioned during his speech. Indian Railways: Safety must be a work in progress Any railway accident is lamentable, but more so when it could have been prevented with a little foresight and proper communication. The two trains that derailed on a rickety bridge which was flooded in Madhya Pradesh fall into this category. As usual, we see arguments, even from former railway ministers about why India should not focus on bullet trains when it has not done enough about the upgrade and safety of the existing system. This is not an either-or situation. While bullet trains should be introduced where feasible, the existing network should be constantly upgraded and monitored. Around 23 million people use the railway network each day and this makes it imperative that modernisation is an ongoing process. Lack of sufficient budget is a valid reason, but this can be remedied if the government is ready to bite the political bullet. The answer lies in raising passenger fares at periodic intervals and not just freight charges. But passenger fare is a political hot potato and one which is perceived as having the potential to alienate voters if hiked now and again. It is no secret that vast tracts of tracks are outdated and pose a danger to traffic. Level-crossings are often not manned and coaches lack fire safety measures. The skills of the huge workforce, which run the railways, too must be upgraded along with the infrastructure. The railways has, by the admission of successive ministers, large reserves of real estate. These have to be put to productive use or disposed off to raise revenues. In keeping with the government’s push for Digital India, what the railways urgently need is better technology. This can prevent so many man-made errors. This can be used for early warning about dangers on the tracks, oncoming rail traffic and smoother coordination in the huge and sprawling network. It is true that in recent years, ticketing has improved by leaps and bounds, thanks to technology. But alongside, there have been allegations of the tracks being damaged due to reckless overloading of freight. A thorough overhaul of the tracks should be the first priority now that two accidents have happened, and so many lives lost, simply because of poor maintenance. The on-again, off-again proposal to privatise sections of the railways should be examined afresh as this might relieve some of the load on the government and improve services. Unlike in previous mishaps, this time around, the authorities have launched rescue and relief operations promptly. But once this incident has ceased to be news, plans to minimise such mishaps should not get derailed as has happened in the past.

The actress launched on Twitter the logo of her ’The Live Love Laugh’ Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation, dedicated to addressing the issue of mental health in India. India hopes for a rain-free warm-up match Agency | Colombo

It is Kohli’s first fullfledged assignment as Test captain and the ace bastman is keen to make to it count for himself and the team. Looking for a proper tune-up before the three-match cricket Test series against hosts Sri Lanka gets underway, India would be hoping that rain stays away from their one and only threeday practice game beginning at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Thursday. India’s first practice session was moved indoors at the National Cricket Club after rain played spoilsport yesterday and with thundershowers predicted for tomorrow, Virat Kohli’s side will only pray for some play against Sri Lanka Board President’s XI. It is Kohli’s first full-fledged assignment as Test captain after the

If the batting looks good with Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay doing well at the top then the bowling, especially the spin department, promises results as well. The experience of Harbhajan Singh and Amit Mishra has certainly added value to the Indian spin force and they are expected to make full use of Sri Lankan wick-

The young captain has himself admitted that even though it’s a young Indian Test side, it promises to live up to the expectations of millions of fans. At the onset though, Kohli and company will face the Board President’s XI, which is led by young Sri Lankan batsman Lahiru Thirimanne.

Fight is ‘against the system’, says the 21-year-old leading Patidar stir Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

The architect of Patidars’ agitation for OBC status, which is snowballing into a movement, is a 21-year-old. Meet Hardik Patel, convener of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS), who has engineered the stir, pushing the Anandiben Patel government to a corner. On Tuesday, as Hardik addresses the gathering at a Patel community hall in Vadodara, he shows streaks of a rebel with a cause. “Patels make the government. If Patels can make a chief minister reach the post of the prime minister, then we also possess the strength to overturn this government,” he thunders, to whoops of applause from the motley crowd comprising people between

20-60 years. The hall resounds with slogans of solidarity, promising to make the upcoming rally in Vadodara on August 21 a huge success. Hardik took on the leadership of the movement, mobilizing mainly youth under the banner of (PAAS) after abandoning his business of supplying water to commercial establishments. Youngsters, led by Hardik, have oragnised successful rallies, jointly conducted by the Leuva and Kadva Patidars in Visnagar in Mehsana to Dwarka in Saurashtra and recently in Gandhinagar. Interestingly, the CM and six of her ministers are from the same community. On Wednesday, government spokesperson and health minister Nitin Patel, who

also hails from Mehsana, said, “Hardik Patel is a Congress worker. He is closely working with Viramgam MLA (Tejshree Patel).” Hardik also belongs to Viramgam and claims his father, Bharatbhai, is a staunch BJP supporter and reportedly drove Anandiben Patel in his jeep during her maiden Assembly elections in

1998. The people, however, have a different take. “What he is saying and doing should have come from senior leaders from the BJP and Congress,” says 64-year-old Chagganbhai Patel from Gandhinagar, justifying why he and several Patidars like him responded to the call given by PAAS. The serial agita-

will be taken against those trying to disturb peace.” The BJP government’s spokesperson also accused Opposition Congress of resorting to “cheap tactics” of instigating and misguiding the Patidar or Patel community. “Congress has resorted to cheap tactics of divide and rule. On one hand, it is misguiding the Patidar youths, and

on the other, it is working with the reserved-category communities, making them apprehensive of the scenario if the Patidars granted OBC status,” the minister said. “Instead of playing divide and rule, and disturbing peace and harmony, Congress should come clear on its stand whether it supports their demand.” The government further alleged

that a large number of Congress leaders and workers were involved in the agitation. “If Vijapur Congress MLA Prahlad Patel has written to Chief Minister Anandiben Patel with a request to consider the demand of the Patidars, convener of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti Hardik Patel is a Congress worker,” said the minister.

That does not however, make me a political person. At the same time, our agitation is not against Anandiben,” said Hardik. “It is against the system,” he adds. In 2004, Sardar Patel Sevadal (SPS), a group of the Patidars, was founded in Mehsana, which is a stronghold of the BJP.

Life looked good for Jayesh Thakkar (28). With a well-paying job at a surgical equipment store, he was optimistic he would be able to take care of his father, mother and sister. He also planned to marry . But he was diabetic and, unknown to him, the disease was damaging his kidneys. “It all started in February last year,” said Thakkar. “Both my kidneys failed because of acute diabetes.” Doctors initially said the condition could be treated with medicines.”But after three months, they said I needed a new kidney and, till I got one, I would have to undergo dialysis at regular intervals,” said Thakkar. The family’s only hope is a donor. “My parents wanted to donate their kidneys but they were found unsuitable on medical grounds,” said Thakkar. “In Jivraj Mehta Hospital, there is a

waiting list of 3-4 years. At Civil Hospital, it is two years.” For almost all renal failure patients in Ahmedabad, the problem is the same -long queues for donors’ kidneys. The waiting list at the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC) has currently over 400 patients. (IKDRC is attached to Civil Hospital.) “Cadaver donation at our institute has increased from 10% to 30% in recent years,” said Dr HL Trivedi, director of IKDRC. “But in Gujarat, donation rate hovers at 10% of total deaths.” He further said that according to recent figures, over 7,800 people lost their lives in road accidents alone. “Hence, there is scope for more donations,” he said. Many patients are not hopeful they will live long enough to get a transplant.Kamal Pandit, 52, lost the use of his kidneys because of high blood pressure.

When contacted Banaskantha additional collector M Mistry said, “ We need to check files for 3 villages that have been badly washed out”. Urban Housing Development minister Shanker Chaudhary, who

has been put in-charge of relief operations in Banaskantha said, “Shortage of milk for the dairies for short-term operation in the region is likely to be felt due to deaths of cattle’’. One of the biggest milk cooperatives Banas Dairy operates from the region. “Arrangements for proper burial of the animals have been made

to avoid outbreak of any disease,’’ said Patel. Senior cabinet ministers will visit affected districts later this week to prepare the full and final report. So far, the state government has issued aid to the tune of Rs 1.24 crore towards 41 deaths of a total 72 reported cases. More than Rs 1,317 crore has been doled out in cash.

A huge hoarding of ‘Chai Pe Charcha’ has been put up at the place where the old canteen existed, also a big poster of Narendra Modi has been put right at the entrance. Apart from Modi, the depot has a statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and a mural of Mahatma Gandhi. Chief minister Anandiben Patel while inaugurating a new

tions have seen nearly a dozen episodes covering major cities, with two of the rallies turning violent. But through all this, Hardik has matured as the face of the Patidar agitation. Three years ago, Hardik graduated with a B.Com from Sahjanand College in Ahmedabad. Now, he is walking the tightrope as both the BJP

CM describes bus depot as PM Modi’s Karmabhoomi anathan argued that this aspect of the case is not going to make any difference. “This is a case where a complaint was filed in the Supreme Court (SC) and the SIT was asked to look into it. It was monitored by the SC at all relevant time. The amicus curiae suggested certain further investigations and SIT did it. The reports (by SIT) were looked into again by the amicus curiae and by the SC,” Vaidyanathan said, adding that when the report was sent to the magisterial court, it upheld the closure report. He said that the

petition doesn’t restrict to the Gulberg Society massacre, rather it focuses on a larger conspiracy behind the riots. A day before explaining the larger conspiracy, Desai had claimed events prior to the Godhra train case had to be taken into consideration. “Since Zakia Jafri was residing at Gulberg Society, her complaint doesn’t restrict to the FIR lodged at Meghaninagar police station (Gulberg Society falls under this station),” Desai said, while alleging that failure of authorities in taking preventive measures, imposing cur-
