Former Governor of West Bengal and NDA’s pick Jagdeep Dhankhar on Saturday defeated Opposition nominee Margaret Alva to become the 14th VicePresident of India. Of the 725 votes polled, Dhankhar clinched 528 votes, Alva got 182 while 15 were found to be invalid. As the term of incumbent M

Venkaiah Naidu ends on August 10, members of both Houses of Parliament throughout the day voted to elect the next VicePresident who will take oath of office on August 11.With support from regional parties like the Janata Dal (United), YSRCP, BSP, AIADMK and Shiv Sena, Dhankhar from the very start was up for an easy win. Even as Alva got the backing of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Jharkhand Mukti

Morcha (JMM) and Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), she failed to garner the support of Trinamool Congress (TMC), the second largest Opposition party after the Congress in Parliament with 39 MPs in both the Houses. The TMC had decided to abstain from voting alleging lack of consultation with them on Alva’s candidature. While the 71-yearold Dhankhar is a Jat leader from Rajasthan with a socialist

background, 80-year-old Alva is a Congress veteran and has served as governor of Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. Moments after Jagdeep Dhankhar was declared winner in the Vice-Presidential polls, Union Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated him on his new innings. “I am sure that as Vice President and Chairman of Rajya Sabha @jdhankhar1 ji will prove to be an ideal guardian of the Constitution.

India slams OIC for its J&K statement: Reeks of bigotry

7.2 Per Cent Projected Growth Rate In 2022-23 Ensures Some Confidence In the face of persistent inflationary pressures and tie in prices, the Reserve Bank of Indiahas jacked up on Friday its basic policy rate —the repo rate— by 40 basis points to 5.4%.With this hike, the RBI policy rate now reaches what it was before the pandemic started. This is a landmark which can be viewed as the complete normalisation of its monetary policyfrom the ultra accommodative stance adopted in the wake of the pandemic. From the earlystages of the pandemic incidence in India, RBI followed a policy which was more engagedtowards maintaining the tempo of the Indian economy against the severely contractingimpact of the pandemic. It may be recalled that for one quarter after the pandemic hit in the initial stage, the IndianGDP had shrunk by a quarter. For a whole year, the GDP had fallen and its performancediverged from the long term growth path. It thus needed a kind of nursing before theeconomy could get up on its feet.Has the Indian economy then recovered from the adverse effects of the pandemic so thatthe RBI could reverse its accommodative monetary policy stance. In a way, yes, going bythe optimistic note stuck by the RBI governor while announcing monetary policy.Reserve Bank estimates growth in the first quarter of the current fiscal at 16.2%, dipping to 4per cent by the fourth quarter, with growth for whole year at 7.2% for 202223.In April RBI cut the GDP growth projection for 2022-23 to 7.2% from its earlier forecast of7.8%. Governor Shaktikanta Das, however, stuck a line of caution saying that the continuingRussiaUkraine war could yet weigh down the prospects. At any rate, he did not have anyreason to further revise the growth prospects down at this point of time. The overall projections for the economy pivot around the most unpredictable factor: nature ofthe monsoon and its incidence. So far, the monsoon has been 6% above the long termaverage. However, its incidence an intensity maters a lot as well as the spread of rains. Sofar, there has not been any untoward trends and RBI thus sets the farm sector growth at aneven keel. This is important, since the overall performance of the agriculture sector sets the tone forinternal demand. As such, internal rural demand is somewhat sluggish and some of thecritical off take in the rural areas are trailing. Tractor sales were noticed to be lower this yearcompared to one year back. However, there was a spurt in tractor sales last year and thecurrent trailing demand could be on the back of large purchases a year back. High frequency indicators of activity in the industrial and services sectors were holding up.Production and sales of consumer durables are rising and the manufacturing sector has hithigh levels of capacity utilisation, according to the Reserve Bank’s surveys.RBI expects the activity in the contact intensive services sectors, like tourism and ITservices, to raise in the wake of overall improvement in economic activity. Since thesesegments are the drivers of the economy, the growth prospects would brighten with theirgaining strength. The external sector has shown particular buoyancy with exports rising despite globaluncertainties. Exports increased, though imports went by record numbers resulting inunprecedented level of current account deficit of over $100 billion in April to July period.Global demand for Indian IT and ITES continued to grow and tourism and travel servicesalso improved. What is most encouraging that foreign direct investment flows at $13.1 billion was highercompared to $11.6 billion the same time last year.Nevertheless, the adverse global situation gave rise to competitive depreciation of allcurrencies against the US dollar. This did not let off India and the rupee had depreciated andhit the 80 to a dollar rate which could possibly be explained only by the large sale movementof portfolio investments by overseas investors. Thus, two critical parameters for setting any policy framework appear to be the anticipatedincidence of two variables: how the financial markets react to the evolving monetary policystance of the US Federal Reserve and the course of the once of crude oil.The crude oil price behaviour undeniably influences the domestic price line as much as anypolicies of the central bank. This is true not only of India but all the other emerging nationeconomies. The average Indian crude oil import price is - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara currently at around $105 per barrel.

As India look to wrap up the ongoing Twenty20 series in West Indies, finding the perfect squad for Asia Cup remains at the back of head coach Rahul Dravid’s mind. Deepak Hooda may have shone with impressive performances in limited chances, but the return of KL Rahul and Virat Kohli intensifies the top3 competition, with struggling Shreyas Iyer also in the mix. Hooda and Iyer’s performance will be monitored closely, while Kohli faces a nightmarish batting slump in world cricket. For Rahul, regaining full match fitness will be of utmost importance, having missed a

major chunk of cricket this year. Rahul was left out of India’s squad for the Zimbabwe ODIs after aggravating his hamstring injury – a development that could also thwart his World T20 hopes. Former Pakistan tweaker Danish Kaneria feels the Indian batter should be kept as a standby option for the upcoming Asia Cup, beginning August 27. “KL Rahul is a player who can play at any number. He is a fantastic fielder who can also do wicketkeeping. However, he has not played an international match since his injury,” said Kaneria on his YouTube channel.“I’ve kept KL Rahul on stand-by because he has not played after the injury. You cannot start.

England after a controversial 3-0 win over India on penalties here on Friday.During the shootout, Australia’s Rosie Malone missed her shot but to the dismay of the Indian team and fans, the forward was given a second chance as a technical official, B Morgan of England, had failed to start the clock on time. Each player gets eight seconds to put the ball Given a second chance, Malone

a little bit of our momentum. Then it did go in, and everyone is deflated,” Schopman, a double Olympic medallist said. ”I’m not using it as an excuse, but when you make the save, that’s an enormous boost for the team and you turn the decision around and the girls are really upset about it,” she added.Narrating the incident, she said: “The official’s hand was up, but I didn’t really know and the umpires -- A Church and H Harrison of England -- also did not. IN WHAT brightens the prospects for fresh investments by companies, the capacity utilisation in the manufacturing sector has picked up over the last three quarters to 75.3 per cent by March-end compared with the long-term average of 73.7 per cent. The higher capacity utilisation is being seen as a sign of return of growth impetus, which in some way has provided the headroom for the Reserve Bank of India to frontload the quantum of rate hike on Friday. But going forward, tighter

monetary policy conditions and uncertain demand conditions – both global and domestic – may weigh on the investment sentiment, said experts.Across sectors, the signals are mixed. While steel and cement are witnessing an uptick, capacity utilisation in auto and consumer goods continue to lag. Capacity utilisation is the ratio of actual output to the potential output that can be produced under normal conditions.
