Ashwin, who had taken 45 wickets when opening the Indian bowling in Tests in the past, picked up 5 for 51 in South Africa’s first innings total of 184 after opening the attack with the new ball.

Underworld don Chhota Rajan was brought here early on Friday from the Indonesian tourist city of Bali by a joint team headed by CBI officials to face trial in over 70 cases of murder, extortion and drug smuggling in Delhi and Mumbai. Deported after being on the run for 27 years, the 55-year-

old gangster, whose real name is Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje, landed at Palam airport along with seven-member team which included officials from Delhi Police’s elite Special Cell and Mumbai police’s Crime Branch in an IAF’s Gulfstream-III aircraft. He was taken straight to the CBI headquarters where he was subjected to a preliminary

round of questioning. Due to security concerns, Rajan, who has reportedly tipped Indian security agencies about the movement of Dawood Ibrahim and his aides, is unlikely to be taken to a Delhi court and instead a magistrate will be brought to the CBI headquarters for his remand. Pakistani actor Mahira Khan has apologised for posing with a guy, dressed up as a Shiv Sena worker at a Halloween party, after inviting backlash from Indian fans. The photo showed Mahira as Catwoman, while posing with the guy, who is holding a placard that reads “Mahira ko bahar nikalo”, referring to the Shiv Sena’s threat that they will not let any Pakistani artist enter Maharashtra. The 32-year-old actor, who is making her Bollywood debut with superstar Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Raees tweeted her apology and also said creative people should not be dragged into politics of two nations. “The image from a Halloween event I attended has been made out to be something it never was. The students camping outside University Grants Commission (UGC) office in protest against the scrapping of non-National Eligibility Test (NET) fellowships on Thursday marched to the ministry of human resource development and demanded that the “review committee” for the same decision be dissolved. decision? We demand the panel be dissolved,” Shehla Rashid, vice president Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students union said. The students were led by Swaraj Abhiyan leader and former UGC member Yogendra Yadav in the protest march. Yadav, who was the commission’s member when the committee was formed to “broaden the scope” of the non-NET fellowships, has earlier also come out in support of the agitating students and had spent one night at the protest venue.

2 / Dt. 07-11-2015, Saturday Editors’ Picks saturday, NOVEMBER 07, 2015 Shah Rukh Khan: Welcome to Pakistan

BJP MP Yogi Adityanath was upset with film actor Shah Rukh Khan because he found that Khan “spoke like Hafiz Saeed” when beefing about intolerance in India. Then BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya thoughtfully suggested that he should migrate to Pakistan, upon which Hafiz Saeed, whose statements are under a media gag order in Pakistan, tweeted to welcome Khan to Pakistan. Of course, Khan should shift to Pakistan. When Hafiz Saeed invites, you’d better listen, given his outreach. Karachi is like Mumbai in its climate. Also like Mumbai, it is the business hub and cash cow of Pakistan. People here are cosmopolitan, unlike Lahore, which is still somewhat rustic. Most Pakistanis love Khan because of the films he has acted in. He will be a celebrity in Karachi. But there are some minor rituals of settlement he will have to go through, which should be no problem at all. First, he will have to indicate in his new passport that he is a Muslim. This is useful because doing so will secure him against much mischief. The entry is important, because if he doesn’t declare his Muslim faith, he can get into trouble. While declaring what he is, he will also have to indicate what he is not. For instance, he will have to curse the “false prophet” of the Ahmadi community that has forcibly been made non-Muslim by the constitution of Pakistan. No need to feel vomit-y about this; we all make this declaration and don’t feel embarrassed in the company of our Ahmadi friends. Then there is this minor detail. It is about his family. Is he married to a Muslim or a Hindu? If the wife is Hindu, what status has been given to the children? Of course, the names can be easily changed. Abdur Rehman and Abdullah are blessed as favourite Muslim names. If the wife is not yet a Muslim though, there will be difficulties from Khan’s marriage. If the wife is not from the People of the Book, she has to be converted, preferably by Hafiz Saeed, given his divine authority. They say Khan is second only to Amitabh Bachchan in wealth. That is a blessed condition because charity, called zakat, becomes compulsory for him after that, to prepare him for high status in paradise, which will have lots of pretty virgins to disport with. There is, however, a minor glitch here. Any charity set up with zakat will not be permitted to help non-Muslims, especially Hindus, quite a few of whom inhabit Karachi despite laudable efforts at conversion or migration. There are other minor obstacles that Khan will of course overcome quickly, given his popularity in Pakistan. He will recall that he has made a number of films in which he has acted as a Hindu icon, a king putting non-Hindus to the sword, or a commando of the Indian army, killing Pakistani mujahideen and, still worse, seducing Muslim girls.

He Named Me Malala Movie Review Agency | Mumbai

Aged only 18, the brave and articulate Malala Yousafzai has seen more of life – and the world – than most octogenarians. The complexities inherent in her activism and the social and political nuances of her part of the world are probably impossible for a single film to decipher and deconstruct. That is the feeling that one comes away with after watching Davis Guggenheim’s 87-minute documentary tribute to Malala’s courage. The film packs a great deal of info into its limited runtime, but still skims the surface of her multi-layered reality. But that is not to say that He Named Me Malala, a rare feature-length non-fiction film to hit multiplex screens in India, fails to bring alive the teenager behind the intrepid crusader for the right of all girls to be educated. Named Me Malala is a fine and engaging film that, in terms of the broad biographical details, spans the entire spectrum of the story of the world’s youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize winner. Besides throwing light on her relationship with her father, Ziauddin Yousafzai, He Named Me Malala touches upon the historical backdrop against which she, then only 15 years old, was nearly killed by the Taliban. It briefly traces the emergence of Taliban leader Mullah Fazlullah (he has

since been killed in an air strike), who claimed responsibility for the October 2012 assassination attempt on Malala. He was nicknamed Radio Mullah for his incendiary broadcasts inciting his armed men to eliminate champions of education for girls. The Taliban threat still hangs over her, which is why Malala cannot return home. Her heart yearns to see “the dirty streets and the river” of her town again. But as things stand, there isn’t a hope in hell of her making the trip back to Swat Valley.

Air India eyes operational profit for the first time in ten years!

Buoyed by their thumping win in Mumbai, defending champions Atletico de Kolkata will look to climb up the ladder when they face bottom-placed NorthEast United FC in an Indian Super League football match here on Saturday. After suffering a three consecutive losses, including one at home, the injury-ravaged ATK bounced back in style picking up a 4-1 win against the in-form Mumbai City FC, which had three wins on the trot. The win in Mumbai also saw their main forward Iain Hume opening his account after a quiet six matches. Portuguese World Cupper Helder Postiga returned home with a hamstring injury. The Canada International’s lean patch had hurt ATK miserably but after their win in Mumbai, they will now hope to be a transformed side. Of their three successive losses, one had come at the Highlanders home venue in Guwahati and ATK would look to avenge the defeat before taking on another

struggling team, Kerala Blasters FC in Kochi on November 10. With four successive home outings to conclude the league stage, the reigning champions have an excellent opportunity to make the playoffs with ease. As for the team update, the hosts are expecting their marquee player Postiga to return in a week’s time while Javi Lara and Izumi Arata are still doubtful.

ISL: FC Goa beat Chennaiyin FC 2-0, jump to top spot on table Agency | Chennai

Agency | New Delhi Air India is eyeing operational profits for the first time in a decade this fiscal, two years ahead of the target as per its turnaround plan. Lower fuel prices coupled with improved operational performance are being cited as the two main reasons for this happy state of affairs and airline officials say net profit could similarly be advanced by two years. Aircraft availability, increased cabin manpower and more aggressive marketing are some other reasons the airline’s financials are improving. An Air India official said this month, 58 narrow body aircraft have been made available against the 52 that were available in previous months. This alone has helped Air India corner more passengers. Another official said Air India’s profit before tax target could be preponed to 2018-19 from 2021-22 but it presupposes the airline’s load factor (number of occupied seats) at 80 percent networkwide. This official said as per the turnaround plan, Air India was to achieve yield of Rs 3.75 crore networkwide by this fiscal but has already managed Rs 4.05 crore so this target will also be revised upwards.

Xiaomi Mi 5 With Snapdragon 820 SoC Tipped to Launch on December 3

Agency | New Delhi The wait for Xiaomi to launch its Mi 5 flagship smartphone may finally end next month, if a new leak is to be believed. Additionally, a separate leak has suggested that Xiaomi will launch its Mi Band successor as the Mi Band 1s next week. Chinese tipster Leaksfly in a Weibo post has claimed that Xiaomi will launch its Mi 5 flagship at an event on December 3 and that it will pack Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 SoC. The tipster goes on to hint that Qualcomm may launch its Snapdragon 820 chipset on November 20. It’s worth noting that this is the first time a precise launch date for the upcoming Snapdragon 820 chipset has been tipped. Qualcomm has been lately teasing features of its highend Snapdragon 820; though has not yet come out with a release date for the chipset.

FC Goa scored two penalty goals to beat Chennaiyin FC 2-0 and jump to the top spot of the Indian Super League football in Chennai on Thursday. Leo Moura (64th minute) and Jonatan Lucca (74th minute) converted from the spot to give FC Goa the top spot in the league standing with 14 points, one more than FC Pune City. Chennaiyin, on the other hand, suffered their fourth loss in eight matches to occupy the fifth place with 10 points. Worse for Chennaiyin, Harmanjyot Singh Khabra was sent off in the 89th minute, the second time he has been shown the red

card in the league. He was banned for four games after his red card against NorthEast United FC on October 20. On appealing, it was reduced to two. Between then and now, the midfielder earned a recall to the India squad for the World Cup qualifier against Guam in Ban-

galore on November 12. Chennaiyin had defeated Goa 4-0 in the away clash and it was not surprising to see the visitors opt for an extra man in defence. The five-man defence made it difficult for Chennaiyin to break them down, although Stiven Mendoza had good chances to score.

BCCI puts Roger Binny on notice over conflict of interest Agency | Mumbai

The 29-point reforms proposed to end the conflict of interest of administrators, players, affiliated units, selectors and employees of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may see national selector Roger Binny putting in his papers after the Board’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Mumbai on November 9. The rule regarding conflict of interest relating to selection matters clearly states that “no member of the selection committee including the convenor and the invitees i.e. the coach or captain, or their near relatives shall have any financial interest or business association with any player considered for selection to any team selected for and on behalf of BCCI”. Binny’s conflict arises from the fact that his son, Stuart, is part of the current Indian team. Since

the day he was picked in January 2014, there have been questions over the presence of senior Binny in the selection committee. Moreover, his daughter-in-law and Stuart’s wife, Mayanti Langer, has also been on the payrolls of the official broadcaster of BCCI matches. The 1983 World Cup-winning member has been advised by the BCCI to take a call soon after the AGM ratifies the proposed reforms on conflict of interest. “Roger has been given time to decide about his future post

AGM. All selectors and officials of the BCCI now understand that after the Supreme Court verdict on N Srinivasan’s conflict of interest case, every individual attached with the Board will have to decide whether they want a position in any state association or an office of profit,” said a source on Thursday. The source also gave the example of BCCI chief Shashank Manohar’s son, Adwait, who resigned from the Board’s legal committee the day his father took over as the president.

India’s premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin hoodwinked the South African top-order to bag three wickets this morning and leave the visitors reeling at 127 for five at lunch on Day 2 of the first cricket Test here today. Ashwin (4-36), who had sent opener Stiaan van Zyl (5) back in the pavilion on the opening day, got the prized wickets of overnight batsmen Dean Elgar (37), Hashim Amla (43) and then Dane Vilas (1). The Proteas are still 74 short of India’s first innings score of 201. AB De Villiers (26), who is fighting on alongwith Vernon Philander (2), got a lucky reprieve in the 25th over of the day after Ravindra Jadeja induced an outside edge of the star player’s bat and Virat Kohli took a clean catch but replays showed that the left-arm spinner had overstepped the pop-

ping crease. De Villiers had nearly walked back to the pavillion when the umpires stopped him and repeated replays confirmed the no-ball, much to the visiting team’s delight. But that joy was shortlived as Amla, who had batted well during his 97-ball stay, was stumped off Ashwin in the very next over. Three deliveries later Ashwin also got Vilas back in the pavil-

ion to leave the visitors struggling. Earlier, starting on their overnight score of 28 for two, Amla and Elgar mixed caution and aggression to make steady progress on a slow and low I.S. Bindra Stadium wicket. The duo batted with poise and vigilance to stitch a 76-run third-wicket partnership against a bowling attack that was backed by close in fielders.

David Beckham came over here and suddenly the sport is starting to grow,” Warne told reporters at a hotel in Times Square ahead of the first All-Stars T20 game on Saturday. Cricket is second only to

soccer in terms of world popularity, he said, no matter that baseball and American football reign supreme in the United States. “We don’t think it’s a gamble, we think Americans are ready,” said Warne in a nod to his sideline as a poker player. Warne and Tendulkar will captain two All-Star sides -- Warne’s Warriors and Sachin’s Blasters -that will showcase the talents of some of the greatest stars in world cricket, playing three Twenty20 three-hour games in New York, Houston and Los Angeles. Tendulkar, who offers a softly-spoken bookish counterpart to Warne’s tell-it-how-it-is drive, said their dream was to one day see an American team in the World Cup.

Supreme Court rejects bail to Patel quota agitation leader Hardik Patel on Friday and asked Gujarat government to conclude its investigation within 45 days. The apex court also directs Gujarat Police not to file charge sheet in sedition case without its permission and posts the case for hearing on January 5. Patel was arrested on Oc-

tober 23 by the city crime branch in connection with the second sedition case registered against him and sent to judicial custody by a Surat court. Surat police first booked him for sedition for allegedly advising a local youth to kill the police rather than commit suicide. On October 21, the Ahmedabad police’s crime branch filed sedition case against the 22-year-old lead-

er and five of his aides, Ketan Patel, Dinesh Patel, Chirag Patel, Alpesh Kathiria and Amrish Patel under IPC sections 121 (waging war against the government), 124 (sedition), 153-A (promoting enmity between different communities) and 153-B (assertions prejudicial to national integrity). The FIR said Hardik had instigated his community to adopt violent means to “wage war” against the Gujarat government. It relied on transcripts of various telephonic conversations and speeches made by Hardik and other members of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) wherein they allegedly instigated the Patel agitators to “wage war against the state government”.

Spike in gold smuggling cases at Pune airport

Correspondent | Pune

A significant rise in gold smuggling cases has been reported at the Pune international airport in Lohegaon. According to the Customs Department, in the financial year 20132014, only six cases of gold smuggling, with 3.73-kg gold worth Rs 1.1 crore recovered, were reported at the airport. In 2014-2015, there were 23 cases of gold smuggling with 33.5-kg gold worth Rs 9.18 crore recovered. And between April 1 and October 31, 2015, the Customs Department registered 26 cases of gold smuggling, in which 15.5kg gold valued at Rs 4.43 crore was recovered. Officials said increased import duty on gold — from zero to 10 per cent — has led to a spike in smuggling since 2013. Gold is available at low cost in Dubai. One can save Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 3 lakh on a purchase of 1 kg gold in Dubai. So, racketeers smuggle gold from Dubai to India by

airways and other routes through “carriers”. The consignments are then handed to “receivers” in India. A probe has revealed Pune is considered a transit point by gold smugglers based in Mumbai and South India. Customs officials have arrested 23 people for carrying gold in the 26 cases since April 1. Of them, only two are from Pune and about 16 are from Mumbai and Thane. Also, two are from Aurangabad, one from Odisha, one from Gujarat and one from Kozhikode in Kerala. Interrogations revealed they were to deliver the gold smuggled from Dubai to “receivers” mainly in Mumbai and South India. However, the investigators could not reach their masterminds in Dubai or in India. Most of these “carriers” are from the middle-class. Two women, Sangeeta Panjari (48) and her sister Mangal Sarmalkar (46) — arrested at the Pune airport with 36 gold biscuits

weighing 4.2 kg valued at Rs 1.1 crore — were from lower middle-class families in Mumbai. Officials are zeroing in on who booked their tickets. Their phone call records are being checked to reach the racketeers. Officials said international hawala racketeers lure low-profile “carriers” by paying them a few thousand rupees for smuggling huge gold consignments.

cation was issued so that the cooperative elections do not clash with the civic polls. A PIL challenging the notification was filed in the High Court by one of the dairy directors Sangramsinh Rathva. “Justice C L Soni quashed and set aside the notification and directed the concerned election officer to proceed further from the stage of the declaration of the list of contesting candidates and to conclude the election accordingly forthwith,” said Pankaj Champaneri, the petitioner’s lawyer.

The Gujarat High Court on Thursday held that Muslims cannot be booked for an offence of polygamy under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) as it is permissible in the Islamic laws. The court was of the opinion that in absence of a uniform civil code having more than one wife is not an offence in the Muslim community. It, however, observed polygamy “is an exception and not a rule.” The order came on a plea moved by one Jafar Abbas Rasoolmohammad Merchant, a resident of Raipur. He had sought quashing of an FIR lodged on the basis of a complaint by his first wife Sajedabanu, a native of Bhavnagar. She had left her husband in 2001

summarily announcing cancellation of its registration as a society,” the NGO said in a statement. It said while several international leaders, including the United Nations Secretary General have recently upheld the importance of civil society in healthy democracies, this notice is the “latest assault” on free speech in India. “The RoS is clearly acting under directions of the Home Ministry in Delhi, which has

been trying to shut Greenpeace India down for over a year now. She said the Registrar has passed this order without granting Greenpeace a hearing and without complying with the Madras High Court order to address each of our points and queries. “This is a blatant attempt to circumvent the legal process and shows no respect for the law. We are confident that we are on strong legal ground.

Greenpeace India registration cancelled by Registrar of Societies

Correspondent | New Delhi

Greenpeace India today claimed that its registration as a society has been cancelled by Registrar of Societies in Tamil Nadu and said the government’s “clumsy” tactics to suppress free speech was turning into a national and international embarrassment. The NGO said the fresh notice of cancellation of its registration was an extension of the “deep intolerance” for differing viewpoints which the government was “harbouring” and asserted that it would again seek legal “redress”. “Greenpeace India Society has just received notice from the Tamil Nadu Registrar of Societies,

after a dispute. The petitioner later married another woman, after which Sajedabanu filed a complaint with Bhavnagar Mahila police station. The FIR was lodged against the petitioner under various sections of the IPC, including 494 (bigamy) and 498A (dowry harassment and domestic violence). Sajedabanu lodged the case against her husband say-

ing that she was never divorced and, therefore, by marrying another woman he committed an offence of bigamy. Merchant moved a petition before the High Court in 2010 for quashing of the FIR, saying that Section 494 of the IPC is not applicable since bigamy is permitted in Islam. He also prayed that he cannot be booked in Bhavnagar, since the alleged offence

was committed in Raipur. Justice J B Pardiwala directed police to remove Section 494 from the FIR. The judge referred to several judgments of the Supreme Court stating that in absence of a uniform civil code, the petitioner can’t be booked under the Section 494 of the IPC. During the arguments, advocate MTM Hakim, who was appointed as amicus curiae in the case, had pointed out that under Muslim laws, the second marriage cannot be held void. The court, however, observed, “…notwithstanding there is no codification by the legislation of marriages amongst the Muslim, polygamy is not encouraged and is an exception and not a rule.”

23-year-old enthusiastic candidate, approached a senior officer of Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) requesting to issue him a ‘certificate’ that ratifies the latter has a toilet at his residence.
