BJP leader Sakshi Maharaj was today booked for allegedly hurting religious feelings after he indirectly blamed Muslims for the population growth in the country that sparked a controversy, days after Supreme Court outlawed seeking votes in the name of religion or caste. As the outburst by the MP from Unnao in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh drew strong condemnation from opposition parties, the BJP distanced itself from the comments made at a ‘sant sammelan’ here yesterday while the Election Commission sought a report from Meerut district administration. The FIR was registered under IPC sections 298 (Uttering, words, etc., with de-

liberate intent to wound the religious feelings of any person), 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 295A (Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class) and 153b (Imputations, assertions prejudicial to national- integration) among others, police said. SP Meerut J Ravinder Goud said the FIR was registered at Sadar Bazar police station. Congress said it will file a

complaint against Sakshi Maharaj before the Election Commission. ”Those with four wives and 40 children are responsible for the population increase in the country. Hindus are not responsible for the increase in population,” he said. “Strict laws are required in this country if we really want to curb population. Parties need to rise above politics and take decision for the sake of the country,” he added. Congress leader KC Mittal said Sakshi Maharaj’s speech is “offensive” as it is based on caste and religion and goes against the recent Supreme Court judgement. “It is a violation of the Model Code of Conduct and Congress is officially filing a complaint against him in the Election Commission,” he said. Special Judge Arvind Kumar re-issued the summons against India-based firm M/s Media Exim Private Limited and its directors R K Nanda and J B Subramaniyam while asking them to be present in court on February 22. The firm was set up by James, Nanda and Subramaniyam. The court passed the order after advocate N K Matta, appearing for the Enforcement Directorate, informed it that the summons issued against the three accused on the last date of hearing could

comments, JD-U leader K C Tyagi termed them as the first major violation of the Supreme Court guidelines outlined on Monday on use of religion in politics. “Recently the Supreme Court and the Chief Election Commission laid down some guidelines for model code of conduct, including not to use religion, caste and language. This is the first major violation by a major political party that is BJP, by its MP. Now action must be taken by the party as well as the Election Commission against Sakshi Maharaj.

Demonetisation: Playing pro-poor card, Modi says note ban to lift their life

Addressing the two-day National Executive meet of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the national capital on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the government is committed to changing the quality of the life of poor people and the move to demonetise higher value currency was a part of the long term measures against corruption and black money in the coun-

try. “Our commitment is to change quality of life of poor. Demonetisation part of long term measures against corruption, black money,” he said. He further commented on the social evil of corruption and how it was an impediment in the development of the country. “Corruption a big social evil and unregulated flow of currency a big stumbling block in containing graft,” he said. PM Modi also asked the party members to use their ‘organisational strength’ to win the poor over as that was true service to God. “Serving people amounts to serving

God,” he said. Stressing on bring transparency in political funding, the prime minister said BJP fully supports the idea of transparency in political funding. He also added, “For us poor and poverty not just about winning polls it’s an opportunity to serve.” Members at the meet gave a standing ovation to PM Modi for the “unprecedented” cross-border surgical strikes and the demonetisation “success”. Party President Amit Shah also praised the prime minister on Friday for India’s stance after the Uri attack. Shah said,

decision comes two days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi praising Nitish for his policy of imposing liquor prohibition in Bihar. The Nitish Kumar government is trying to ensure that over two crore people participate in the event. Though the timing of the chain has not been decided yet but it will take place within a span of half an hour. The state government has decided to have several drones and helicopters in very district for aerial

photography. The event is aimed to be the world’s largest and biggest on any issue. This was the first time that Modi had praised the prohibition policy imposed by the Bihar government last year. Earlier Nitish Kumar had considered only a partial prohibition by banning country liquor. But the overwhelming response of women and self-help groups encouraged Nitish to declare total prohibition from April 5, 2016.

said BJP would perform poorly in the UP battleground. “My own prediction is a clear majority for the Samajwadi Party led by Akhilesh Yadav, possibly even a two third majority, and the BJP will be routed, getting even less than the BSP seats,” Katju wrote in his post. Citing reasons for his opinion, Katju said, “In most

states, including UP, voting is largely on the basis of caste and religion. The exception to this is when there is a wave, e.g. the Modi wave in favour of BJP in the May 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Presently there is no wave, and so voting will be largely ( over 90% ) on the traditional basis of caste and religion. Demonetisation was perhaps done to create a wave, but it has not succeeded in doing so.” The 70-year-old also said that the demonetisation move may cause more harm to BJP than benefit since “the common man, small and middle level businessmen, farmers, etc have been hard hit.”

It had on November 31 last year issued an open-ended NBW against James and summons against other three accused in the case, saying, “There is prima facie evidence against the accused.” The NBW was issued against James after ED had told the court that the alleged middleman was out of India and pressed for an arrest warrant against him to bring him here to face the trial. An open-ended NBW (arrest warrant) does not carry a time limit for its execution.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday decided to double up the length of the human chain planned to raise awareness on the liquor prohibition issue in the state, according Said. Earlier, Nitish had planned a human chain spreading a

Almost every Kashmiri we met said that there was a need for a one time political settlement and that unless the basic political issue was resolved, death and destruction would continue to visit the Valley with increasing frequency. Kashmiris claim that they have lost faith in India because India has failed them. Now the trust-deficit is widening. Some Kashmiris believe that the rest of the country looks at Kashmir only within the framework of national security.

2 / Dt. 08-01-2017,Sunday Editors’ Picks SUNDAY, january 08, 2017 Captain Cool quits as skipper with minimum fuss and at the right time With the most candid of farewell notes, Mahendra Singh Dhoni bid adieu to his captaincy career. Those three words to the chief selector — OK, that’s it — aptly sum up the sanguine equanimity that Dhoni has maintained through his career, through the lofty peaks he has scaled as well as the inescapable troughs he has traipsed in the nine-year-long tenure as the skipper of a maniacal cricketing nation’s team. Such minimalistic flourishes mark out Dhoni the skipper from several of his predecessors. For Sachin Tendulkar, the rigours of captaincy told on his face; Sourav Ganguly lived it large, every triumph a scoff on the face of the selectors; Rahul Dravid sequestered to a self-woven shell of understatement. But Dhoni lived life on his own terms; he has now left on his own terms too. Forget the layman, even those who shared the dressing room with MS Dhoni on January 4, didn’t have the slightest clue regarding the big decision Captain Cool had in his mind. While the cricketing world suffered a jolt as MS Dhoni stepped down as India cricket team captain from the limited-overs format, the country’s most successful captain was a relaxed man as he spoke to his Jharkhand teammates on the penultimate day of their Ranji clash against Gujarat. “None of us had the slightest idea that he would step down as the captain of the Indian team later in the day. We were having our team meeting when the notifications started popping up on our cellphones,” said Ishan Kishan, who has been selected as part of the squad for the second warm-up game against England. The most appreciable corollary to Dhoni’s departure is that he didn’t hang on to his position. The timing was near-perfect; just about when the whispers of Kohli’s readiness to take over the reins from him were getting louder. Dhoni, wiser with age and from experience, knows how ill-advised it is to stretch his tenure. He has never been too image-conscious or self-obsessed over how the public or media will perceive him. But he will be aware of the vehement criticism he had to cope with in the final phase of his Test career in the wake of gutting series defeats outside India. His lasting legacy as skipper, beyond the body of statistics and trophies, is in the way he went about his chores without any fuss or hubris. The “Captain Cool” image embellishes a remarkable narrative, worthy of a blockbuster biopic. It would be interesting now to see how he would phase out the rest of his international career. A pragmatic speculation is he would end it when he deems himself surplus to the demands of a young side. “We first had a team meeting where we had a discussion regarding our game and how can we improve it further. He (MS Dhoni) was also here and he enquired about the kind of facilities we’re being provided and if they need to be upgraded etc...,” Ishan said. “Later, I had a word with him since I’m a wicket-keeper and he gave me tips. We spoke on my skills behind the wicket, how I can improve them further and he showed me a few drills for low catching, and footwork etc…” Jharkhand, who made 408 to take a first-innings lead in the semifinal, capitulated on the final day as they were bundled for just 111. Jasprit Bumrah was the star of the show, picking six wickets for 29 runs as Gujarat reached the final of the Ranji Trophy after 66 years.

After wrapping up, they will fly back to India and take a break. The second schedule will then be shot in India, after which the team will head out for another International schedule. Coming back to the first pictures from the sets of Tiger Zinda Hai, we see the whole team exam-

ining the location and planning the shoot. In the pictures, we see a lot of building which have been destroyed by rockets and grenades. The makers plan to shoot in this rubble and we guess it would be an ideal backdrop, considering that a few important action and chase sequences will be shot over here. Anyway, check out the pictures right here and tell us what you think about them in the comments section below! For those of you who don’t know, Tiger Zinda Hai is a sequel to Ek Tha Tiger. While the prequel was helmed by Kabir Khan, this one is being directed by Ali Abbas Zafar. But the story will start off from where it ended the last time around. However, the sequel promises to have a lot more of action than Ek Tha Tiger.

The actor, otherwise known for some intense roles, was seen in the light-hearted one when he played Rana, love interest of protago-

Tiger Pataudi showed his India teammates what self-respect is, Sourav Ganguly taught his troops to stand up to the best in the business and Mahendra Singh Dhoni provided them the spunk to be world-beaters. There have also been captains who can be categorised as brilliant and even inspiring. They led the side by personal example, like Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Sachin Tendulkar, or even Mohammad Azharuddin. They all had their innings, never looking like lead-

ers of champions. Not that they lacked leadership qualities, they only left others in the team awestuck by raising their own bar, making it difficult for others to aim at. Dhoni inspired confidence in his players that they are free to go about their work diligently as he was there to back them. In any team, egos come into play, more so when equals start performing and start think-

ing that they, too, should get an opportunity to lead the side. Indian cricket is replete with internecine wars affecting the morale of the players. It took close to 50 years for things to fall in place and evolve systems to ensure that the right men are there to lead the team. Dhoni is one leader who said after his first major success -- the inaugural World Twenty20 in South Africa -what he looked for in his teammates: He would like to see them stand in front of a moving truck! In other words, he wanted them to sacrifice everything for the team and the captain.

East Bengal will be without their star foreigners, defender Ivan Bukenya and forward Willis Plaza, when they kick-off their I-League campaign against Aizawl FC at Barasat on Saturday. Due to lack of training time, both Bukenya and Plaza are expected to be cooling their heels for the first game. “They have had long flights with layovers at different countries. It’s not easy to judge on them just yet. Let’s see how they are next week and then take a call,” coach Trevor James Morgan said at the pre-match press conference at the club ground. East Bengal are still to sign their fourth foreigner in the Asian quota. Un-

The British coach vowed to do all in his powers to win the elusive crown this time. “We were unfortunate in one of those seasons that we could not win the I-League. I know the expectations of the fans are immense here as it always is,” “I would do everything in my power to win the I-League this time, and it’s not the I-League it’s every game that we play. Danielle Wyatt (40) and Kris Britt (35) joined forces to stitch a 75-run partnership for the third wicket to pilot Melbourne Renegades to a hardfought five-wicket victory against Melbourne Stars in the Melbourne Derby in a Women’s Big Bash League encounter at Melbourne Docklands on Saturday (January 7). Renegades have beaten Stars both times this season. In pursuit of a modest target of 128, Sophie Molineux (23), the 18-yearold all-rounder, and Rachel Priest (12) provided Renegades with a solid

garian held firm, saving that set point, converting his own moments later and then breaking Raonic’s serve twice in the second set on the way to a 7-6 (7), 6-2 win. Raonic didn’t blame the late finish Friday against Nadal, or the tax that playing the 14time Grand Slam winner took on his body, for his

lapses on Saturday. Dimitrov “made it obviously very difficult (and) I didn’t turn around and bring the performance I needed to bring,” Raonic said. “I didn’t serve a high enough percentage. I was just a tidbit slow. “He won over 80 percent of second-serve points, which is, for lack of a better word, pretty bad on my side.” Raonic made the semifinals at the Australian Open last year, reached his first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon and finished the year at No. 3 in the rankings.

Milos Raonic’s title defense ended in a semifinal loss to Grigor Dimitrov at the Brisbane International on Saturday, a day after his come-from-behind win over Rafael Nadal. Top-seeded Raonic beat Roger Federer for the title here last year, avenging a loss to the Swiss star in the 2015 final, and appeared to be on course for a third straight Brisbane final when he had set point in the first-set tiebreaker against Dimitrov. Emma Kearney, the medium pacer, then prised out Molineux to keep Stars in the hunt. Wyatt and Britt, however, strung together a half-century partnership to steady the innings. Wyatt was the more aggressive of the two and struck five boundaries in her strokefilled innings. She was especially severe on Alana King by dispatching her for a couple of boundaries down the ground. Britt turned out to be the ideal foil to Wyatt and played a measured hand. Gemma Triscari, the left-arm pacer, broke the stand by sending Wyatt back to the pavilion with the score reading 112 for 3. Six runs later, Britt was run-out, but with just 10 more required off 13 balls, Renegades seemed to be coasting towards victory. Natalie Sciver bowled a parsimonious 19th over by giving away just five runs and picked up the scalp of Grace Harris (10). In the final over, Renegades needed three runs to win. Molly Strano (3 not out) and Maitlan Brown (1 not out), however, were able to hold their nerve to help Renegades cross the finish line with three balls to spare.

Misbah had been Pakistan’s batting mainstay for the past six years but scores of 4, 5, 11, 0, 18 and 38 in six Test innings in Australia had led critics to say it was time for him to depart. “The problem is we don’t have anyone to replace Misbah,” Miandad told The Associated Press on Saturday. “This shows how weak our cricketing structure is.” Miandad believes the Pakistan Cricket Board had not thought about succession. “Everywhere in the world there’s a sys-

tem in place and players come and go, but unfortunately we didn’t adopt any such system,” Miandad said. “Why are we now asking Misbah to leave? Have we prepared any replacement for him? Unfortunately the answer is no and now it’s entirely upto Misbah to decide himself when he wants to quit.” When Pakistan lost the second Test at Melbourne, there was strong speculation that Misbah would retire, perhaps even before the third Test. But Misbah led the side in Sydney and even after Saturday’s defeat he didn’t indicate when he plans to quit Test cricket.

Our highest priced ticket is `100 and we are hardly going to bring the kind of gate receipts that justify `3 lakhs.” According to the official, the club’s initial meetings with government officials, including the sports minister, had gone well. “We had told them that this was an attempt to get the common man in for the games, and provide a platform for Tamil Nadu players. They had been extremely receptive then. But now what we are hearing is, we have to pay this huge sum every game. It is not very fair when you look at Mohun Bagan paying somewhere around `25000 per game for their ground.”

OK for ISL, too high for I-League club

They were up against it right from the day they got a ticket into the I-League, but things keep getting harder for Chennai City FC. With a couple of days left for their season to start, the city’s first ever I-League outfit now faces uncertainty over their home ground — the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Express understands that the state government, which owns the JN Stadium, is demanding that Chennai City FC pay up roughly what their ISL counterparts Chennaiyin FC pay, to host home games. Sources close to the club told that they estimated the figure to come close to `3 lakh per game. “I think the government officials think that we are spending crores to get into the

Sunvilla News | Gandhimagar

The Gujarat government has decided to redevelop the Gandhinagar Railway Station at a cost of Rs 250 crore and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to perform its ground breaking ceremony on January 9, a top official said. As part of the redevelopment, there is a plan to build a five-star hotel on top of the railway station to accommodate delegates coming here to attend the Vibrant Summits held every two years. “The project will commence as soon as Prime Minister Narendra Modi performs ground breaking ceremony at the rail-

way station on January 9, a day before the inauguration of 8th edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit at Mahatma Mandir near the railway station,” Gujarat Chief Secretary, J N Singh said in a press conference today. State Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has already given his go-ahead

for the formation of a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for the station re-development project, he added. “The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 250 crore. We want to complete the entire project, including the five-star hotel, before the next Vibrant Summit of 2019, so that delegates

Sunvilla News | Morbi

A 15-year-old girl, who was allegedly kidnapped, confined in a trench and repeatedly raped for over a month in Kotda Nayani village of Morbi district in Gujarat, has fled the village, along with her family, fearing attacks from relatives of the accused. The girl was found to be six weeks pregnant on December 15, and underwent abortion. The paternity tests on the foetus are a part of the investigation. The accused, Naresh alias

Mahesh Solanki, son of Jayanti Solanki, is of the same caste as the girl, and is also a distant relative of the minor. He claims it was a “mutual relationship”. Eight persons have been arrested in the case. The girl and her extended family of 31 members — five minor siblings, parents, grandparents, four uncles and aunts and 11 cousins, all of them minor — fled their homes in Wankner taluka of Morbi on the night of December 29. Man arrested for kidnapping trader in 2015

(H.S.) | New Delhi A man has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a Gujarat-based trader in the national capital in 2015, police said on Saturday. Sajid (23) was nabbed by a Crime Branch team of Delhi Police from a bus stop near Ashram Chowk on Thursday, Ravindra Yadav, Joint Commissioner of Police(Crime), said. On December, 2015, the trader, Valji Bhai, had come to Delhi from Bhuj in Gujarat after getting phone calls from unidentified persons, informing

him about cars available at throwaway prices, the police officer said. At Delhi railway station, Valji met a man who took him to Palwal to show him the car. There, he was kidnapped by five to six persons who beat him up and called up his son demanding a ransom of Rs 5 lakh, Yadav said. However, the gang let Valji Bhai go after getting information about an impending police raid, but not before snatching Rs 20,000 cash and a mobile phone from him.

camping beside National Highway 27, some 30 km away. “The family members of the accused have threatened to murder the victim and kidnap two more of our daughters if we do not agree to a compromise. Therefore, we left our homes in the dead of night,” said the victim’s grandfather. When contacted by The Indian Express, Morbi Collector I K Patel said he was not aware of the migration.”But I shall ask the local subdivisional magistrate and the police to inquire into the matter,” he said. After the family complained of threats from relatives of the accused, the police took nine of them into preventive custody on January 1. They all were released the same day. Morbi SP Jaypalsinh Rathore said, “If they approach us, we will provide protection. But they have not approached the local police.”

Congress today rubbished the claims made by the state government about the success of Vibrant Gujarat Summits in attracting investment and creation of jobs, and said the reality was different and that the event was used for “self-marketing” by Narendra Modi when he started it as the chief minister of the state. BJP hit back, saying Congress leaders were showing narrow-mindedness by opposing Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit. Senior Congress leader Shan-

kersinh Vaghela today said the states which do not organise such grand events were actually ahead of Gujarat in attracting investment. Modi as the Gujarat chief minister started this initiative in 2003 for “self-marketing”, Vaghela said. “All the Vibrant Summits held till now were meant for

his self-marketing, not for attracting any investment. Even today, Gujarat is very poor. We are not at all developed. We are behind even states like Bihar in some sectors. Each child in Gujarat is born with a debt of Rs 35,000,” he said. “States such as Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra which do not organise

such events are way ahead of us in attracting investment. After the tall claims of creation of millions of jobs due to Summits, over 60 lakh youths in Gujarat are still unemployed,” said the Leader of Opposition in Assembly. Vaghela said as a protest he would not attend the inaugural session on January 10 when the Prime Minister would launch the 8th edition of the Summit in Gandhinagar. State Congress president Bharatinh Solanki said these Summits never helped Gujarat in attracting investment or creating jobs as claimed by the BJP government.

TAKING cognisance of the culling of about 1,650 birds at Asha Foundation, animal and bird shelter house in Ahmedabad’s Hathijan area, and in its one kilometre vicinity amid bird flu scare, the animal rights organisation People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has intervened and objected to the unethical culling practice followed by the Gujarat government’s animal husbandry department.PETA

is all set to bring this to the notice of and complain to the state government authorities about the department for not following the guidelines laid down by the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) and the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009. The animal rights organisation also aims to bring the same to the notice of AWBI. “PETA received a complaint of

unethical practices being followed in the culling process. After checking from the state husbandry department, PETA has verified that. This would be brought to the notice of state government authorities, seeking appropriate action. The content has been drafted and once proofread, will be sent to authorities on Saturday,” said Dr Santosh Sahu, PETA’s veterinary policy advisor based in Delhi.

from kidney, liver, heart and other organ donations to include tissues such as bone and bone products, heart valves and vessels, duramater, amniotic membrane, cadaveric joints such as knees, hips, shoulder and bone grafts. Donation of cornea and skin tissue is already conducted in several cadaveric donations. “Amniotic membrane of placenta, which is a thin membrane that comes out during pregnancy, can be saved and used for burn patients.

Currently, it is thrown away in almost all hospitals. If it is saved, it can be of great use,” said Dr Pravin Shingare, director of Directorate of Medical Education and Research. A national biomaterial centre in Delhi will be the first to store these tissues in frozen form. In Mumbai, plans are also under way to start a new skin bank to secure all cadaveric skin donations made for skin grafting and plastic surgeries at KEM hospital.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee feared coup by LK Advani camp in 2002, says new biography

He didn’t know who was behind it, but he was convinced of the plan

(H.S.) | New Delhi Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee feared a coup by a section of his BJP that wanted to have him replaced by his deputy Lal Krishna Advani, a new biography has claimed. The “coup of sorts” was in the works a few months after Advani took over as the Deputy Prime Minister in June 2002, says the book, “The Untold Vajpayee: Politician and Paradox” (Penguin/304

pp/Rs 599), by journalist Ullekh N.P. Citing an unnamed minister whom Vajpayee summoned to his residence, the author says: “The Union minister asked Vajpayee not to worry too much about it. “The PM replied that he was merely stating that he knew of a plan to unseat him and replace him with Advani. He didn’t know who was behind it, but he was convinced of the plan. He had earlier been asked by an RSS honcho to become

India’s President, and leave the PM’s role to Advani,” the book contends. The author also claims that Vajpayee offered a “compromise formula” during the 1975-77 emergency by asking activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) — the RSS student wing — to own up to destruction of public property so that the opposition could cut a deal with the government. “Vajpayee spoke about the arson and destruction of public property in many parts of the country by miscreants.

After organ donation campaigns boosted cadaver transplants in the state, tissue donation — and its transplant — is set to get streamlined with setting up of the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organisation (ROTTO) at KEM hospital. The new centre is expected to start by March this year to monitor cadaver donations in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Daman and Diu. The aim is to expand
