Akhilesh Yadav Has Improved His Acceptability Through Long Election Campaign

In the Uttar Pradesh’s assembly elections, the overriding perception is that Samajwadi Partychief Akhilesh Yadav is the man most likely to benefit from electoral tide.Akhilesh Yadav is the complete antithesis of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. This is mostmarked in the language he uses in election campaign. Akhilesh does not make commentslike garmi nikaal denge (will take out heat), but responds with witty quips. In this case, forinstance, he asked whether Adityanath was a compressor to perform such mechanical feats. The loss in the 2017 assembly elections and the dismal showing in the 2019 Lok Sabhapolls had left Yadav embittered. After the losses, party men recall, he cut himself off from allcontacts within the party. The 2019 results were especially painful, as his wife Dimple lostfrom Kannauj, the same city from where he launched a specially made “Samajwadi ittr”(perfume). In this election, Yadav is on his own. In 2012, although he had almost singlehandedlystitched together all the elements that ousted Mayawati-led BSP government, he was not theparty’s chief ministerial face. His 10,000-km yatra through the state had even heard theadmiration of Rahul Gandhi, who was unable to forge the people connect that Yadavseemed so adept at doing. The change was visible on the ground then, with him denying tickets to strongmen such asDharam Pal Yadav. And then, there was his humility. After the victory, he quickly dismissedspeculation that the new government would demolish statues and memorials built byMayawati, saying that the vacant space would be used for public facilities and such ashospitals.Akhilesh Yadav of 2022 is a very different man. Gone is the very strong backing of his fatherMulayam Singh, who is unwell. In Karhal, from where Akhilesh is contesting, Mulayamaddressed his first rally in this election season. But he forgot to mention his son’s name, saying instead “vote for whoever the candidate is”, a lapse that Adityanath took a swipe at.His reconciliation with his uncle, Shivpal, too, is half hearted, what with him giving just oneseat to Shivpal’s party.Yadav’s strategy this time has been to stitch together a coalition of small, caste-basedparties which can fill in the gaps in the SP arsenal. It has generated resentment among partyleaders who had been working for the last five years in the hope of getting ticket.Ram Bishun Azad, former MLA from Mankapur, is one of them. In the 2017 elections, hefinished third, which he said was because his name was announced very late and he got justnine days to campaign. “Akhileshji had asked me to fight the elections, and to keep workinghard”, said Azad. Yet, the seat went to Ramesh Gautam, who was expelled from the BSP for anti-party activities. “My years of dedication counted for nothing and a man who had joinedthe party just four months ago got the ticket. It was humiliating”, said Azad. There are many like Azad. A few got tickets, but were told not to file their nominations. Someof them said Yadav was burnt in effigy at many places and that official candidates werebeing actively opposed by local party units. They also said Yadav’s manner of decisionmaking, where it was completely unclear what criteria was used to distribute tickets, wasunlike what happened when Mulayam was party president.“He (Mulayam) would call up a worker, explain to him why the ticket was cancelled, assurehim why the ticket was cancelled, assure him of an adjustment in some other form, and keephis word. Now it is just oneman show and people’s careers are being ruined”, said adisgruntled ticket seeker. The SP’s most prominent allies in this election are the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) andSuheldev Bharariya Samaj Party (SBSP). The former is led by Jayant Chaudhary (son oflate Ajit Singh) and later by Om Prakash Rajbhar.Traditionally, the RLD has a strong grip over Western UP, where the jats, though notnumerically dominant, are an influential caste. It is, however, a waning grip as in elections of2017, the RLD’s score was zero.It is also a party with a history of allying with political outfit of different ideologies. In the 2002assembly elections, it sided with the BSP. Two years later in the Lok Sabha elections, itstruck an alliance with the SP and then moved on to the BJP in the 2009 Lok Sabhaelection. In 2014, it shifted its allegiance to the Congressled United Progressive alliance. Inthe possible Scenario of SP not emerging as the single largest party, and the governorinviting the BJP to form the government, another shift by the RLD cannot be ruled out.Sudhir Panwar, a senior SP leader from Shamli in western UP, however, said the RLD wasunlikely to ditch alliance. “The BJP tried hard to bring the RLD to its fold, but the party did notgo with it. This is a different kind of - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara election where the search.

Actor Shefali Shah has worked for around 27 years in the film industry and also boasts of a powerful presence in the OTT space. Despite having such a long career, she says that the appreciation she often gets for her performances doesn’t always translate into work. She has mentioned that the people who express a desire to work with her don’t actually follow-up with an offer. Appreciation never translated to work or the work I wanted to do,” she says. Shefali recently saw the release of her web series, Human, and has many more projects in pipeline. On being asked about the one thing she would like to change about the industry, Shefali told Anupama Chopra of Film Companion, “The ability for people, particularly in cinema fraternity, to stick to their word. They will say, ‘you are very good’. It does not translate to…nothing. So don’t just tell me that I am good. ‘Oh god we want

to work you,’ really? ‘I want to work with you too’ and then nothing happens. Then I see you at the next party and say the exactly same thing to you. It’s really boring.”Further commenting on the filmmakers’ preference of roping in popular stars for their projects, she added, “Preference of star is very annoying now. Finally we have woken up and understood that finally we need to be an actor now. And I am glad we had OTT breaking that for us, I am glad it broke it for me. But still there’s this thing ‘But star hona chahiye na (but we need a star)!’ Then what happens to talent?” Shefali is finally getting what she deserves and claims to have worked the most in the last year than she has ever before. She was recently seen as Dr Gauri Nath in Human which released on Disney+ Hotstar in January this year. She will now be seen along with Vidya Balan in web series Jalsa and in Ayushmann Khurranastarrer Doctor G.

Having fallen as low as ninth back in November, when former coach Ronald Koeman was fired, Xavi Hernandez’s revitalised Barca have climbed into LaLiga’s top three with 48 points, leapfrogging Betis in third place. Mid-table Elche opened the scoring right before halftime when Pedri tried to clear the ball but gifted a perfect assist to Fidel Chavez, who outran Dani Alves and scored with an angled shot just inside the right post Ferran Torres scored the equaliser.

Kapil Dev reacts to R Ashwin breaking his Test record, makes big prediction Agency News: New Delhi A day after R Ashwin surpassed Kapil Dev’s tally of 434 wickets to become India’s second-highest Test wicket-taker, the legendary former all-rounder has reacted to the off-spinner’s accomplishment. Kapil held the record for the most Test wickets by an Indian cricketer for 10 years before it was broken by Anil Kumble in 2004 during a Test match against Bangladesh, and now 18 years later, Ashwin finds himself next only to Kumble. Kapil lauded Ashwin for his wonderful accomplishment saying that had the off-spinner received more chances, he would have broken his record a lot earlier. “It’s a great achievement especially from a guy

who did not get enough opportunities in the recent past. Had he got those opportunities, he would have crossed 434 much earlier. I am happy for him; why should I hold it [the second position] from him? My time has

passed,” Kapil told Mid-Day in an interview. Ashwin reached the landmark on Day 3 of the first Test against Sri Lanka – which also proved to be the final day of the Test match – when he dismissed Charith Asalanka for 20 in the second innings. Ashwin finished with six wickets in the match as India took a 1-0 series lead with a dominating innings win against Lanka. As for the future, Ashwin, at 35, will need a truckload of wickets to go past Kumble, but in case he doesn’t, Kapil has backed the ace India spinner to achieve one more humongous feat for his country. ”Ashwin is a fabulous cricketer, an excellent and intelligent spinner. He should now target 500 Test scalps, which I am sure he will try and achieve.

Agency News: New Delhi Gold rose to more than $2,000 in Asian trade on Monday morning as investors fled to the safe-haven commodity over fears about the impact of the Ukraine war on the global economy. The precious metal hit a peak of

$2,000.86 an ounce, its highest level since September 2020. Traders have been sent running to safety as Russia continues with its invasion of Ukraine, which has battered equity markets and sent oil prices to a near 14-year high, adding further upward pressure to already high inflation.

International Women’s Day: Date, importance and why we celebrated the day on March 8

inbox

International Women’s Day, a day when we honour women’s immense strength and unique abilities, falls on March 8 which is a Monday this year. This day is meant to uphold feminist values and celebrate womanhood to the fullest. It’s also an occasion to celebrate the great achievements of women and the meaningful contributions they’ve made to the world. To understand how this day came to be, here is its interesting history and significance:HistoryThe international celebration rose out of women’s rights movements in the US, Russia and other European countries where they demanded civil, social, political and religious rights for women. In 1909, the Socialist Party of America inaugurated the first NationalWoman’s Day on February 28 in the United States. The celebration crossed borders when activist Clara Zetkin proposed holding an International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen in 1910. With about 100 women from 17 different countries present at the meeting, the decision to make the Women’s Day celebration international was passed International Women’s Day was first observed in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland in the year 1911. he date of March 8 was chosen for the celebration as it marks the day when women in Soviet Russia started protests for the right to vote which they were granted in 1917. A public holiday was later declared on the same date. Earlier, the date (March 8) was only celebrated by socialist activists and communist countries. However, the larger feminist movement adopted it in 1967. The celebration gained legitimacy when the United Nations began commemorating International Women’s Day in 1975 and two years later, the UN General Assembly officially formalized it as International Women’s Day. The theme for International Women’s Day 2021 is ‘Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world’. According to the UN Women website, it aims to ‘celebrate the tremendous efforts by women and girls around.
