Framing rules and guidelines to regulate the content on social media and OTT platforms needs urgent attention, the Delhi High Court has said, underlining the need for taking seriously the use of vulgar language in public domain and on social media platforms which are open to children of tender age. The judge said while in schools, offices etc., students and workers can be punished for using profane speech, the authorities also need to regulate “profanity which enters into the domain of indecent speech by a broadcast medium”.

India is bracing for its first digital Census in 2024, and a lot is set to change

Atishi, Saurabh Bharadwaj Two New Faces in Delhi Cabinet As Prez Clears Their Appointment as Ministers

Agency News: New Delhi

Neiphiu Rio Takes Oath as Nagaland CM for 5th Time

Covid-19 and its variants did what even World War II and India’s wars with China and Pakistan could not: Disrupt a Census cycle that has continued unbroken since 1881. The Census scheduled for 2021 will now be completed only in 2024, three years behind schedule. But first things first. What is a Census? Called a treasure trove of information, the Census encapsulates everything—from the country’s literacy levels, education, housing, household amenities, migration, urbanisation, fertility, mortality, language, religion and disability to other socio-cultural and demographic data such as age, gender and marital status. It is the largest repository of the nation’s people as well as the source of primary data at the village, town, and ward levels. Post-Independence, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, then Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, piloted the 1948 Census Act, a Union subject under Article 246 and listed in the seventh schedule of the Constitution. Indeed, the Act does not bind the Centre to conduct the Census on a particular date or release its data within a specified period. However, the Registrar General of India (RGI)’s office under the Ministry of Home Affairs has meticulously planned its different phases all these years. These steps include identifying, selecting and training enumerators, house listing and actual data collection, and processing and submitting detailed reports. The RGI had rolled out its 2021 Census plans as early as 2019, with an estimated outlay of nearly Rs 9,000 crore and the mobilisation of over 3.3 million enumerators to collate data for the country’s first-ever digital Census. All the data for this Census will be fed centrally to the Census management and monitoring portal with a provision to support .

Jain resigned on the same day as Sisodia. The two leaders are currently lodged in Tihar jail. Following these resignations, two Cabinet berths had fallen vacant. CM Kejriwal then recommended

Morbi bridge collapse: Gujarat court rejects interim bail plea of Oreva Group MD

Agency News: Morbi

A court on Tuesday rejected jailed Oreva Group managing director Jaysukh Patel’s plea for interim bail, which he had sought to complete the formalities to pay compensation to the victims of last year’s collapse of a suspension bridge in Gujarat’s Morbi town, in which 135 people were killed.

The court of principal district and sessions judge P C Joshi here dismissed Patel’s interim bail plea, which was opposed by both the state government and family members of the victims.

The Ahmedabad-headquartered Oreva Group was responsible for the operation and maintenance of the ill-fated British-era bridge on the Machchhu river, which collapsed on October 30 last year, killing 135 persons and injuring 56 others. Patel, one of the 10 accused arrested in the case, had filed a plea seeking temporary release from jail for 15 to 20

days to complete the formalities required to pay compensation to the families of the deceased and those injured in the crash as per the Gujarat High Court’s February 22 order. The high court had directed the company to pay Rs 10 lakh as interim compensation to the kin of each deceased and Rs 2 lakh to each injured within four weeks.During arguments in the sessions court last week, the state government had opposed Patel’s plea and said the company itself came forward with the offer to pay compensation to the victims, and it should be assumed it was ready with the financial arrangement required for the payment.

Some people who cannot stand the popularity of the ruling DMK which was delivering the “attractive” Dravidian model of governance were trying to “remove” it by fomenting trouble, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin alleged on Tuesday. The DMK president was speaking after unveiling a statue of former CM and late party chief M Karunanidhi here. While accolades were being received for the partyled government from within and outside the state for delivering the “attractive” and popular Dravidian model of inclusive governance, some “who want to divide this country are throwing mud at us.” “They are making plans to remove this government by doing some harm to it. They are involved in planning communal and caste tensions and divide people,” he

Stalin said there was no need for him to respond to unnecessary criticism of his government and that would be dealt appropriately by leaders concerned in the party. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) government came under attack in the Kerala Assembly on Monday with the Opposition decrying the sustained assault on media freedom in the state that has over the last few days witnessed a series of incidents against one particular news channel. The Congress-led United Democratic Front slammed the LDF government for targeting Asianet News over a report in which it had allegedly used a contentious video clip that has now become part of a police case based on a CPM lawmaker’s complaint to the state police chief. Before walking out of the House over the denial of its adjournment motion to discuss the issue of media freedom, the Opposition shredded the ruling LDF and chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan for their intolerance to criticism and targeted attacks on the channel and its employees. Kaliyath and Kannur-based reporter Naufal Bin Yousaf in the FIR that cited sections from the penal code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. The Opposition lampooned the LDF for its doublespeak on the larger issue of media freedom and noted that Left leaders, including the chief minister, were vocal about the raids on the BBC office in the aftermath of the release of the documentary India: The Modi Question while they follow similar intolerance. Congress lawmaker P.C. Most of the experts, including former captain Mark Taylor and Mark Waugh, too have been critical of the pitches, especially the Indore track. “When I say don’t believe the hype, I know the odd ball was turning square, and it got a poor rating,” said Kasprowicz, who was part of the Australia team which won their only series in India back in 2004. “But I remember turning up to the Bangalore Test in 1998, and I’ve got a picture of me standing on the wicket. It honestly looks like a dry creek bed. There’s no grass, but it’s got these cracks and spider cracks all down the whole face of it.

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib-al Hasan delivered with bat and ball as they beat England by 50 runs in the third ODI to earn a consolation win and deny the visitors a clean sweep in Chattogram on Monday. After top scoring with 75 runs to help the hosts post 246, he returned to finish with figures of 4/35 as the 35-year-old became the first Bangladesh player to take 300 ODI wickets. “We have been very good in the last five to seven years at home and unfortunately we lost this series, but we can take a lot from what we’ve shown in this series,” Shakib said. “I thought we showed a lot of character, we could have easily lost 0-3. We thought we were 20 to 30 runs

short, but our bowlers talked about stepping up and doing a job for the team and all the bowlers contributed.” England openers

Jason Roy and Phil Salt laid the foundation for the run-chase with a 54-run partnership before they lost three quick wickets.

James Vince, Sam Curran and Jos Buttler also got starts but wickets fell at regular intervals as Shakib dismissed three of the top four batsmen.

Don’t mind turning wickets, says Daniel Vettori

Agency News : New Delhi

Australian assistant coach Daniel Vettori said he does not mind the spin-friendly pitches on offer in their series in India as they have challenged the batsmen and brought their skill and perseverance into play. India thumped Australia in Nagpur and New Delhi to grab a 2-0 lead in the four-Test series with their spinners ruling the roost in both matches, before Australia flipped the script in Indore to seal a nine-wicket win last week. “I don’t mind the surfaces because I feel it’s the same for everyone,” New Zealander Vettori, who is Australia’s assistant coach in the series, said. “It doesn’t feel like the toss is the key ingredient... you almost know what to expect. “You turn up and you can

Embattled Adani Group on Tuesday said it has repaid sharebased financing of Rs 7,374 crore (over USD 900 million) and will prepay all such remaining loans by the end of the month, as it looks to allay concerns over leverage and debt to win over investors. The repayment will release pledge on shares of promoters in four group companies, it said in a statement, adding that together with repayments done earlier, the group has prepaid USD 2.016 billion of share-backed financing. In a January 24 report, US short seller Hindenburg Research flagged “substantial” debt levels at the group while alleging accounting fraud and use of offshore shell companies to inflate stock prices. The group has denied all Hindenburg allegations, calling them “malicious”, “baseless” and a “calculated attack on India”. A month after the damning report by Hindenburg lopped off USD 135 billion in market value from Adani group’s listed companies, the conglomerate is hoping to claw back the narrative by choosing slow and steady growth over the breakneck, mostly debtfuelled.

I think that allows some skill to come into it, some perseverance and some fortitude around the things that you have to do. “The batting group, hearing them talk, has started to bind to that as well. A score of 30 could be a great day. It’s how you get that 30 that makes such a difference. The challenge is in accepting it more than anything.

Retail auto sales rose 16 per cent year-on-year to 17,75,424 units last month compared with 15,31,196 vehicles in February 2022 across segments. A change in onboard diagnostics to come into effect from April and the wedding season were the key drivers of growth. The sales, however, were lower than preCovid levels. “Launch of models, continuously improving supply, coupled with a healthy booking-tocancellation ratio and wedding bells kept the momentum going for the segment,” Manish Raj Singhania, president of the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations,

said in a statement. Passenger vehicle retail sales rose 11 per cent to 2,87,182 units last month against 2,58,736 units in the year-ago period. Two-wheeler registrations rose 15 per cent last month to 12,67,233 units from 11,04,309 units a year ago. “The two-wheeler category witnessed a growth of 15 per cent year-on-year but was down 14 per cent when compared with the pre-Covid month of February 2020,” Singhania said.

Netflix India renews its crime drama series Class for a second season

Netflix has renewed its popular Hindi crime-drama series Class for a second season following the success of the first instalment that premiered in February, the streamer announced on Monday. “We’ve felt your love for the first season of Class loud and clear! The show received massive fan love and started multiple conversations about differing socio-economic backgrounds, mental health, love and representation and we can’t wait to up the ante and bring back all this and more in Season 2,” Netflix India wrote on Instagram alongside a short clip. Adapted by Ashim Ahluwalia from the Spanish series Elite, Class was an instant hit after its release. Not only did it hold the No. 1 spot among shows on Netflix in India but also made it to the global top 10 list on the streaming platform in February. The first season of the series followed the journey of three friends from the lower strings of the society who get scholarships to study at Hampton High, an elite school in New Delhi. They are treated as rank outsiders by the other students, belonging to the rich business class in the societal hierarchy. As their worlds collide, conflicts arise, conspiracies are hatched and secrets tumble out of the closet, leading to a murder where everyone is a suspect. The young and dynamic cast of Class includes Anjali Sivaraman, Gurfateh Pirzada, Piyush Khati, Madhyama Segal, Cwaayal Singh, Zeyn Shaw, Chintan Rachchh, Naina Bhan, Ayesha Kanga and Chayan Chopra.

Amitabh Bachchan shares health update, expresses gratitude to fans after on set injury

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who got injured on the Hyderabad set of his upcoming movie “Project K” while filming an action sequence, on Tuesday thanked his well wishers for their concerns and prayers. In his blog post on Sunday, the 80-year-old cinema icon had shared that his “rib cartilage popped broke” and there is a “muscle tear to the right rib cage”. ”Gratitude and love ever... for your concern and wishes... your prayers are the cure... I rest and improve with your prayers (sic),” Bachchan wrote on Twitter. Before flying back to Mumbai, Bachchan had said the doctor at a Hyderabad-based hospital, where he underwent a CT scan, advised him to rest. In the same post, the actor, whose last theatrical release was the 2022 blockbuster “Brahmastra: Part One - Shiva”, said he is in pain but “mobile a bit for all the essential activities”. “.. yes painful .. on movement and breathing .. will take some weeks they say before some normalisation will occur .. some medication is also for pain .. (sic)” The shooting on Nag Ashwin’s “Project K” and other commitments Bachchan is involved with are on hold, he added. Also starring Prabhas and Deepika Padukone, the film will hit the screens on January 12, 2024. Moody’s Analytics on Tuesday said India’s domestic economy, rather than trade, is its primary engine of growth and the slowdown in economic activity late last year will only be temporary. The government data released last week showed India’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth slowed to a three quarter low of 4.4 per cent in October-December,2022, mainly due to contraction in manufacturing and low private consumption expenditure. While the manufacturing sector contracted by 1.1 per cent, private consumption expenditure slowed to 2.1 per cent in the OctoberDecember quarter of current

fiscal. In its report on emerging market outlook, Moody’s Analytics said growth slowed substantially on a year-ago basis, with private consumption lagging overall GDP for the first time since the Delta wave of Covid-19 struck the economy in the second quarter of 2021. “Our take is that the slowdown late last year will be temporary and even salutary, helping to wring some of the demand-side pressures out of the economy without stopping it wholesale. On the external front, better growth in the US and Europe’s incipient recovery will propel India at the mid-year mark,” it said. The US and Europe are India’s largest trade partners and are important destinations for exports of business services.

Meta plans to cut thousands of jobs: Report

Agency News : New Delhi

Meta Inc, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is planning to slash its workforce as soon as this week in order to meet its financial targets. The expected job cuts will impact thousands of the tech giant’s employees, as reported by Reuters. This decision from the Mark Zuckerbergheaded entity comes on top of the 13 per cent workforce reduction it announced in November last year. Over 13,000 Meta employees lost jobs in what was the first

major layoff announced by the tech giant. Last year’s decision for layoffs can be attributed to the company following a streamlining of its organizational structure, which includes buyout packages for managers and laying off whole teams considered to be non-essential. However, the imminent round of layoffs is not part of the same agenda according to people familiar with ongoing developments. Meta has witnessed a steady drop in advertising revenues, which has further led the company to ask its directors and vice presidents to compile a list of employees that can be laid off. Zuckerberg has dubbed this year as Meta’s “year of efficiency,”, a theme that the company has been communicating to employees during their performance reviews.

Nandita Das on casting Kapil Sharma in Zwigato: ‘Audience relate to him’

Comedian-actor Kapil Sharma’s ability to connect with the common man was one of his qualities that made actress-turned-filmmaker Nandita Das cast him in her directorial venture Zwigato, set for a March 17 release. The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, stars Kapil as a delivery man and Shahana Goswami as his wife. “Kapil is popular even after 10 years of his show because the audience relate to him. The way his smile reaches people. If an actor is a good human and is connected with the common man despite being famous, then you don’t have to teach the actor too much,” said Nandita The film also features Sha-

hana Goswami in a pivotal role as she plays Kapil’s wife. “Both Kapil and Shahana are great humans. So, half my job was already done. They easily got into the skin of their characters,” added Nandita.Kapil is famous for his comedy and has never played a serious character in movies. Nandita revealed the apprehensions she had before the film’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TFF). “There were a lot of fans of Kapil at the Toronto International Film Festival. I was curious to know their reaction to the film because maybe they hadn’t seen many films like this before. But to my surprise they were curious and happy to see Kapil in a new avatar,” she said. Zwigato is Nandita’s third feature film as a director after her award-winning debut Firaaq (2008) and Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer Manto (2018).

The world is not new to social empowerment narratives directed at women. The idea that a woman can do anything, has been interpreted as a woman must do everything. That as a founder, she must crush the investor meeting, and invest in her family and children - with equal perfection. We have turned women into superwomen.
