Delhi’s former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who is currently lodged at the Tihar Jail over his alleged involvement in an excise policy scam, has questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s educational qualifications in an open letter. In his hand-written letter in Hindi, the AAP leader raised doubts about Modi’s educational qualifications and emphasised the importance of having a highlyeducated individual in the country’s top elected post. “Whenever I hear the Prime Minister’s claims that we can prepare tea or cook food using dirty gas from a drain by inserting a pipe, it saddens me deeply. It is impossible to cook food using dirty gas from a drain. His statement that radar cannot detect an airplane flying behind clouds has made him a laughing stock in the global community. Even students in schools and colleges mock him for his

remarks,” Sisodia says in the letter. The former Deputy Chief Minister asserted that the Prime Minister’s “lack of education and basic understanding of science is common knowledge worldwide”. He further pointed that other heads take advantage of this by demanding a high cost for every hug they give the Prime Minister. He also expressed uncertainty about the documents that the Prime Minister signs, as he believes that latter’s lack of education renders him incapable of understanding them. The AAP leader claimed that the closure of 60,000 schools in recent years is a clear indication that the government does not prioritise education.

Despite being selected as a civil judge, her name was deleted from the merit list, though she secured an acquittal on merits in the case. However, there is some respite for Pathak from the Supreme Court, which earlier this week issued notice to Madhya Pradesh High Court and state government on her plea. Pathak’s plea contended that denial of appointment to her on the ground of previous criminal case in which she stands acquitted is violation of the fundamental right as prescribed under Article 14 of the Constitution, as she has not been treated equally and at par

with other candidates. “Material irregularity has been committed by the respondents while passing the impugned order whereby the name of the petitioner has been deleted from the list of selected candidates of civil judge without giving any reasonable opportunity of hearing on the basis of mere registration of matter registered against her under s.289 of IPC in which she has been acquitted on merits by the JMFC court,” said the plea. Advocate Namit Saxena, appearing for Pathak, submitted that the removal from the list is violative of the rules

New books with “rationalised” syllabus have been introduced in schools around the country with the start of the new academic session this week. This rationalisation — in the name of “easing the burden” on students in the wake of Covid-19 — has led to some crucial deletions from the History textbooks, including an entire Chapter on Mughal history, references to caste and inequality, mention of 2002 Gujarat riots, and a portion about MK Gandhi’s life and his assassination by Nathuram Godse. The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) had in June 2022 released a list of the rationalised portion from their textbooks for Classes 6 to 12. However, when the printed books finally hit the market early this month, some silent deletions have also been made in the textbooks. While the NCERT maintains that the rationalised textbooks will only be used for one year, until the syllabus is changed as per National Curriculum Framework, the fact remains that the batches currently in schools will be devoid of learning some very important lessons in history. This is why NCERT is ThePrint’s Newsmaker of the Week. NCERT is the top academic body in India. It designs syllabus that are used in schools around the country. Although some private schools allow textbooks from private publishers, all CBSE-affiliated schools and government schools only allow NCERT books. Hence, what is mentioned in NCERT books is an important part of a child’s learning. This is the third syllabus change/ revision under the Narendra Modi government, which has been adding or removing portions in school textbooks to suit its political position. The first syllabus change happened in 2017, when Hrishikesh Senapathy was the director of NCERT. At that time, however, the changes were called “revision”. Senapathy had said that the books needed to be updated to add a lot of new information. These included the Modi government’s policies such as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and demonetisation.

Chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan has vowed to move forward toward establishing the civilian rule and completing the political process in Sudan. His remarks came on Thursday after the postponement of the signing of a political agreement to end the political crisis in the country, while mass demonstrations took place on the same day in the capital Khartoum and other cities, demanding the restoration of civilian rule. “The postponement of signing the agreement tended to set solid frameworks to maintain the momentum and vigour of the revolution, and the parties were now working seriously to complete the discussion on the remaining issues,” AlBurhan was quoted as saying in a statement issued

by the Council.”We reaffirm our determination to proceed together on the same path to complete the ongoing political process as quickly as possible and in a way that closes the doors to all attempts to cripple this process,” he added. The military and civilian leaders were scheduled to sign a final political agreement on Thursday to end the political crisis in the country, but the signing has been postponed as the parties failed to reach a consensus regarding the security and military reform process and the integration of armed groups into the Sudanese Army.

International Monetary Fund sees dip in growth

Agency News : New Delhi

The International Monetary Fund expects global economic growth to dip below 3% in 2023 and to remain at around 3% for the next five years, managing director Kristalina Georgieva said on Thursday, flagging increased downside risks. That is the global lender’s lowest medium-term growth forecast since 1990, and well below the average growth of

3.8% seen in the past two decades. Georgieva said strong monetary and fiscal policy actions to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine had prevented a much worse outcome in recent years, but growth prospects remained weak given persistently high inflation. Bank failures in Switzerland and the US had exposed financial vulnerabilities that increased the downside risks for the global economy, she added.“Despite surprisingly resilient labour markets and strong consumer demand, despite the uplift in China, we expect the world economy to grow less than 3% this year,” she said in a speech ahead of next week’s spring meetings of the IMF and World Bank.“Growth remains historically weak now and in the mediumterm.”“With rising geopolitical tensions, with inflation still running high, a robust recovery remains elusive, and that harms the prospects

of everyone, especially for the most vulnerable people and the most vulnerable countries,” she said at an event hosted by Meridian House and Politico.Global growth dropped by almost half to 3.4% in 2022 following the shock of Russia’s war in Ukraine from the 6.1% rebound in 2021. Georgieva said India and China would account for half of the global growth in2023, but about 90% of advanced economies would see a decline in their growth rate this year.Lowincome countries, saddled by higher borrowing costs and weakening demand for their exports, would see per-capita income growth staying below that of emerging economies, she said. The IMF chief called on central banks to stay the course in the fight against inflation as long as financial pressures remained limited, but to address financial stability risks when they emerge through appropriate provision of liquidity.

Samantha Ruth Prabhu on Shaakuntalam: ‘Didn’t have confidence to play a princess on screen’

Actor Samantha Ruth Prabhu on Thursday said she had initially turned down the offer to headline the upcoming film “Shaakuntalam” as she didn’t have the confidence to pull off the mythological character often described as the “symbol of perfection”. The Telugu film, based on Kalidasa’s acclaimed Sanskrit play “Abhijnana Shakuntalam”, is set to release in theatres on April 14. Billed as a whimsical tale, “Shaakuntalam” revolves around the epic love story of Shakuntala (Samantha) and King Dushyant, played by Dev Mohan of “Sufiyum Sujatayum” fame. After playing a gritty role in the second season of “The Family Man”, Samantha said she was scared to step into the world of “Shaakuntalam”. “I had first said no because I was doing ‘The Family Man 2’, in which I had a real role.
