News Brief Market pauses for breath; Sensex, Nifty off record highs

Agency | Mumbai After ruling at historic highs for two consecutive sessions, the market today paused to catch some breath with both the Sensex and the Nifty coming down from record highs as investors maintained cautious stance ahead of the outcome of the RBI policy meet. Continuing their dream bull run, though briefly, into the third day today, the BSE benchmark Sensex hit another intraday record of 31,430.32 in early trade and the NSE Nifty breached the psychological 9,700-level for the first time, before retreating. But the market’s record-setting spree shortlived and the 30-share Sensex shed almost 119 points to end at 31,190.56, while Nifty slumped nearly 38 points to finish at 9,637.15. Some level of circumspection ahead of tomorrow’s RBI policy review outcome resulted in profit-booking.

83% currency remonetised so far: RBI Agency | Mumbai

The Reserve Bank today said nearly 83 per cent of the currency has been remonetised so far and denied there was any shortage of cash in the system. “According to our latest data, 82.67 per cent of the currency has been remonetised and in volume terms, it is 108 per cent,” RBI deputy governor B P Kanungo told reporters here today. The government had demonetised old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes on November 9, junking nearly 87 per cent of the currency in circulation. In a reply to questions in Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Finance Arjun Ram Meghwal on December 2, 2016, had said the day on which demonetisation was announced (November 8), there were 17,165 million pieces of Rs 500 notes and 6,858 million pieces of Rs 1,000 notes in circulation.

Madhya Pradesh: Explosion at firecracker factory kills 18 workers in Balaghat Agency | Bhopal

At least 18 people were killed after an explosion in a firecracker factory in Balaghat, about 440km southeast of Bhopal, on Wednesday. The blast sparked a blaze around 3pm, which firefighters tamed in two hours. Additional director general of police G Janardan said the explosion in Katera village was so powerful that the factory walls collapsed. He said 18 bodies were retrieved from the site. “More could be lying under the debris.” District collector Bharat Yadav too said more workers could be still inside the gutted factory. Dozens of employees managed to escape unhurt. An inquiry was ordered to know exactly what triggered the explosion, Yadav said. Explosion and fire in firecracker factories,

as well as other manufacturing units, are common in India because of inadequate safety measures and regulations that are breached with impunity. The biggest accident was the explosion at Om Sakthi Fireworks Industries factory in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu, in September 2012. At least 40 people were killed and more than 70 injured. The factory did not have a valid licence. Despite the disasters and the great amount of attention to the

dangerous working conditions, factories largely remain unsafe. A massive fire at a government-run fuel and grain depot in Madhya Pradesh killed 13 people in April. Later that month, five workers were burned to death in Jaipur after tonnes of molten rubber leaked at a tyre unit. In the southern city of Hyderabad, six workers were burnt alive at an air conditioning manufacturing plant in February.

and several injured in firing during protests in Mandsaur. While police denied firing on the agitating farmers, the state government ordered a judicial probe into the matter. Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Bhupendra Singh, meanwhile, conceded that police may have acted in self-defence. He had also announced compensation of Rs 1 crore for the kin of the dead and Rs 5 lakh to those injured. Officials claim shots were fired from with-

in the mob of protesters. In western Madhya Pradesh, farmers are protesting since June 1. They are demanding minimum support price for their farm produce, besides other things. Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi earlier blamed the Modi government for the ongoing farmers’ protests and firing in Mandsaur district of Madhya Pradesh, saying, “Government is at war with the farmers of our country.” In response, Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu criticised the Congress party on Wednesday for politicising the incident and said, “Madhya Pradesh is an island of peace. I tell Congress don’t politicise, don’t fuel violence in the name of farmers.”

Madhya Pradesh farmers protests: CM says ‘govt working for you’

In a move to quell the tension that arose after farmers protest turned violent on Tuesday in Madhya Pradesh, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Wednesday said his “administration is implementing every demand raised by the farmers”. He said he himself is a farmer and understands problems faced by them. “I am in constant touch with the officials and checking the status of the incident in real-time.” In a series of tweets, the chief minister also appealed to the farmers to maintain peace and harmony across the state and not to give credence to rumours. The Election Commission on Wednesday announced that voting, if required, to elect India’s next President will take place on July 17 and counting thereafter on July 20.The last date for filing nominations is June 28 while scrutiny of nominations will take place on June 29, Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi told media persons here. The last date for withdrawal is July 1. “The date on which polling will be held, if required, is July 17. Counting, if required, will be done on July 20,” Zaidi said. The term of President Pranab Mukherjee, the country’s 13th President, will end on July 24. Zaidi said members of the electoral college -- comprising members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha and state assemblies, including Delhi and Puducherry -- will be provided special pens to cast their ballot and use of any other pen will render the vote invalid. The poll announcement has set the ball rolling for the declaration of candidates by the ruling National Dem-

ocratic Alliance and the opposition parties for the country’s highest elected office. The ruling Bharati-

ya Janata Party-led NDA, which is seen to have a clear edge in the electoral college, has so far

not given any indication about its choice. Several opposition parties have since held parleys to find a consensus candidate but have decided to wait for the ruling alliance to reach out to them with the name of its candidate. The parties have said that if a consensual candidate does not emerge, they will field a candidate “who will steadfastly defend the constitutional values”.

Is AAP repeating the mistake of over-reaching once again? Fortune favours the brave, but this seems like sheer recklessness. Delhi chief minister and national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Arvind Kejriwal has decided to launch a nationwide protest on June 10 over the agrarian distress. This he hopes will reach out to rural people across India and help expand the party’s base for future elections. This is commendable given the acute problems that farmers are facing. But politically, the party is going down the same route that did not pay off for it in the past — becoming too ambitious before consolidating. When it got the chance to make a real difference in Delhi for a second time, it frittered away its goodwill and time in a ruinous fight with the former lieutenant governor. Many people initially invested in the party hoping for a genuine alternative to the established political formations which were all seen as cynical and out of touch in varying degrees. In recent times, the party has been locked in a battle with the Election Commission of India arguing that the electronic voting machines were rigged, leading to its defeat. A smart political party does not waste time on such things; it picks itself up, regroups and lives to fight another day. AAP has the huge task of governing Delhi and the excuse that others are not allowing it to work may be valid but wearing thin. Its lack of success in the recent elections suggests that it has gone far from the core values, which were once so attractive to the people. Mr Kejriwal’s combative style alone won’t work when the city is facing a scorching summer with all its attendant problems. He and his government should be seen to be addressing these rather than taking on a national issue in the hope that this will yield to future political gain. This is precisely the sort of cynical politics that AAP had said it would stay away from when it began. Recouping lost ground in Punjab should not be at the cost of Delhi whatever the constraints. There were many innovative schemes that the party began, among them mohalla clinics, that are in need of attention. There is a huge problem of the lack of proper housing for migrant workers. No doubt the party is hobbled by the complicated nature of political power in Delhi but it has not even been seen to try to deal with these since its poor showing in Punjab and the municipal elections in Delhi. If anyone had hoped that the recent defeats would have jolted the party into some degree of realism, they are bound to be disappointed. Kharar MLA and senior AAP leader Kanwar Sandhu in a Facebook post, has raised objections to the method adopted to reorganise the state unit under party chief Arvind Kejriwal. Sandhu warns this could end up weakening the party. According to Sandhu who is currently in Toronto, says no introspection on the poll setback was done before restructuring the state unit.

“Farm loan waivers can lead to fiscal slippages, undo work on fiscal deficit done over last two years,” - The Reserve Bank of India on Wednesday cautioned against rushing to provide farm loan waivers as it could lead to ‘fiscal slippages’ and inflationary spillovers. 7 Times Sharp-Witted Priyanka Chopra Left International Chat Show Hosts Tongue-tied Agency | Mumbai Nothing seems impossible for Priyanka Chopra. From being the leading lady in Bollywood movies to now on her way to conquer Hollywood - she is the true definition of a strong and independent woman and also an ideal role model for young girls to look up to. She has become the most talked about celebrity internationally in a short span of time starting from her power-packed performance in the American television show Quantico to her

much appreciated act in Hollywood debut Baywatch. She appears confident and poised in her interviews and most importantly, she is herself and not pretending to be someone else. She has come a long way and all the appreciation she receives is well deserved. Priyanka Chopra’s interaction with the show’s host Stephen Colbert was fun and entertaining. There she jokingly said that she is on a visa and so she has to be careful about what she speaks else she might get in trouble which was to hint that she might get deported for being honest. When the host talked about how actress Debra Messing admitted recently to being criticized for her nose. Priyanka admitted that she too underwent criticism when she met

a director or producer regarding her potential Bollywood launch. She said that he had a problem with most of her body parts and then she went to say that how there is a false perception of how women should look like. Her honesty just won our hearts and gave us the confidence that we too shouldn’t be bothered by what others say and should be happy with the way we are. She gave us festival celebration goals by teaching the show’s host Jimmy Fallon about our beloved festival Holi and how we Indians celebrate it. She ended up playing Holi with Jimmy by throwing colored powder at each other. She did make us nostalgic by bringing out our cherished memories of celebrating Holi with our family and friends. She taught us that one can be modern yet so grounded with tradition. She talked about why she decided to do her high school in New York as she loathed the idea of wearing school uniform while going to school which is compulsory in most Indian schools.

Their cute chemistry both on and off screen has been setting serious BFF and relationship goals for all their fans. And considering Shiddat is also reportedly a romantic drama, we are really hopeful about the film. A source is also quoted saying that Abhishek, Karan and Alia have been working on the script, which is still in the premature stage, over the last two months. The shooting schedule

is now being adjusted to suit Alia and Varun’s dates. However, nothing has been confirmed as of yet. Alia, who is on a break from films, is happy to be spending time with her family, holidaying and even learning Kathak. She will be back on the sets of her two upcoming films Dragon and Gully Boy, opposite Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh respectively, soon. If reports are to be believed, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan are coming together on the big screen yet again with Abhishek Varman’s upcoming romance-drama, Shiddat, which goes on floors by the end of year 2018. Asian Cup Qualifier: Team India shifts focus to match against Kyrgyz Republic Having posted their seventh straight win in international football, Indian players feel it is important that they “remained calm to sustain the momentum” in the 2019 Asian Cup Qualifier against Kyrgyz Republic. India play Kyrgyz Republic in a crucial AFC Asian Cup qualifying match in Bengaluru on June 13. Rafael Nadal walks into 10th semi-final after Pablo Carreno Busta retires with injury

Rafael Nadal qualified for the French Open semi-finals for the 10th time on Wednesday after compatriot Pablo Carreno Busta retired with injury while trailing 6-2, 2-0. Nadal will face title-holder Novak Djokovic for a place in the final if the world number two gets past Austrian sixth seed Dominic Thiem in his quarter-final. Record nine-time champion Nadal broke Carreno Busta four times in the opening set, with the 20th seed forced to

quit after just 51 minutes due to an abdominal problem. Carreno Busta was making his first quarter-final appearance at a Grand Slam. He received medical treatment at the end of the first set but promptly retired after an anguished scream following an overhead. Fourth seed Nadal re-

corded his 100th best-offive-sets victory on clay -- from just 102 matches -- as the Spaniard hunts a first major title since the 2014 French Open. The 31-year-old has dropped just 22 games through five matches, bettering his previous low of 25 en route the last four in Paris in 2008. He is just the fifth man in the Open era to reach 10 semi-finals at a single Slam after improving his record at Roland Garros to an incredible 77 wins and just two losses.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has faced flak from cricket lovers for scheduling the Champions Trophy in England and Wales at this time of the year. With rain playing havoc and no reserve day, there is real danger of deserving teams bowing out of the tournament. As is standard practice, the very complicated Duckworth-Lewis method has already come into play in several rain-affected contests. Not just fans but cricket captains too have a hard time figuring the complex math behind the rule. The Indian team has already been part of two matches that have been decided by the D/L method. In-

dia beat New Zealand in their opening warm-up by 45 runs and then outclassed Pakistan by 124 runs in their first match of the Champions Trophy. As the Men in Blue attended Virat Kohli’s charity dinner on Monday, former captain MS Dhoni was faced rather tricky question about the D/L method. Mahi, however, handled it deftly and offered a hilarious reply. “You’ve been around cricket for a long time, so can I ask you a question, do you understand Duckworth-Lew-

is?,” Dhoni was asked, according to a report on Sportskeeda. “I don’t think even ICC understands the D/L method,” replied the wicketkeeper-batsman with a smile. Dhoni was also asked about the toughest bowler he had faced in international cricket. “All the fast bowlers are quite difficult, with the limited technique I had, it was very difficult to face the fast bowlers. Still, if I had to pick one, I would pick Shoaib Akhtar. Very simple reason, he was quick, he was fast, he could bowl a yorker, he could bowl a bouncer but you never expected a beamer (he chuckles), he was a bit unpredictable, he was fun to play against,” he said.

Sports Ministry writes to PMO, wants Bharat Ratna for Dhyan Chand Agency | New Delhi

The Sports Ministry has written to the Prime Minister’s Office, requesting Bharat Ratna for the late Dhyan Chand in what can be considered its latest push to bestow the hockey legend with India’s highest civilian honour.Sports minister Vijay Goel confirmed to PTI that he has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Yes, we have written to the Prime Minister about Bharat Ratna for Dhyan Chand. Conferring the honour posthumously will be a fitting tribute to his exceptional service to the country,” said Goel. It is not the first time that the Ministry has sought Bharat Ratna for

Dhyan Chand, who helped India win three gold medals at the Olympics (1928, 1932, and 1936). During the UPA rule in 2013, the Sports Ministry had chosen the hockey wizard for the honour over cricketing great Sachin Tendulkar. However in the same year, it was eventually announced that Tendulkar will be the first sportsperson to receive the award, hours after he ended his illustrious international career. Asked whether Dhyan Chand, who passed away in 1979, should have got Bharat Ratna before Tendulkar, Goel said: “I would not want to get into this and it is not fair to comment about sportsper-

sons of such legendary stature. ”We want him to consider this. We feel Bharat Ratna to Dhyan Chand will not only give a huge boost to Indian hockey but also to other sports,” said Goel. The Ministry decided to write to the Prime Minister earlier this week. Dhyan Chand’s son Ashok Kumar and other former players have been demanding Bharat Ratna for their hockey hero for years. Last year, former India captains Ashok Kumar, Ajit Pal Singh, Zafar Iqbal, Dilip Tirkey were among a 100 former players who sat on a protest on Dhyan Chand being repeatedly ignored.

He found out that the best possible plan against Sehwag was to bowl every single ball as best rubbish ball. “So the best possible plan against Sehwag was to bowl every single single ball as best rubbish ball that you can give. And I got him out a few times in the IPL that way. Because what he expects is not what you dish out. Because he expects you to bowl good balls,” said Ashwin. “So basically for Sehwag, it was very simple, he hit people on

good balls. So my simple strategy to Sehwag was to bowl rubbish balls. And it worked. Because when you start bowling rubbish balls, he starts dictating the pace to you with your rubbish balls or your so-called against him.” Ashwin also said that Sehwag was least interested in team meetings to discuss strategy. “He (Sehwag) just wanted to see the ball and hit it. He used to be the least participative during team meetings,” he said. “There used to be team meetings or huddles, followed by a short speech addressed by Gary (Kirsten). MS (Dhoni) would then take over, would not utter a word and said everything is good.

Virender Sehwag Had A Demoralising Effect On Me, Reveals R. Ashwin Agency | London

India’s premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has revealed the demoralising effect he endured while bowling at former opener Virender Sehwag. Ashwin recalled his tryst with Sehwag at a net session a few years ago. “Sehwag was never complicated. He had a demoralising effect on me actually,” Ashwin said during ‘What the Duck 2’ chat show. “There was an incident in Dambulla, where every ball that I bowled, first ball I bowled outside off stump, Sehwag cut me. Next ball I bowled on off stump, he cuts me. Next ball I bowled on middle stump, he cuts me. “The next ball I bowl on

leg stump, he again cuts me. So I said ‘what the hell is happening’. So I just bowled a ball fuller, Sehwag stepped out and slugged me out for a six,” Ashwin said. Ashwin, who was struggling to win a place in the Indian team at the time, ran out of ideas. “So I said to myself either I am just not good enough or this guy is just way too good ... which he was. But to the greater Sachin Tendulkar also, I didn’t struggle with bowling so much in the nets too. I was very inquisitive. I observed this for a few days. “But then I couldn’t hold myself back, I went to him (Sehwag) and asked, ‘so what should I do to improve’. If I had ask to Sachin, he would

have given me some tips. If it were MS, he would have given me a perspective,” he said. “Viru said ‘You know what, I don’t think off-spinners are bowlers. They do not trouble me at all. I just find it easy smashing them’. I said ‘Sir you are cutting me’. He said, ‘Yeah, I hit off-spinners against the

der the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). The transfer of land to the NHAI is “likely to benefit the region leading to enhanced opportunities for growth and development in terms of infrastructure, transport, communication and employment generation,” an official statement said. The decision is also part of the government’s plans to boost infrastructure in key sectors for accelerating the pace of growth.

Footfall of tourists from Gujarat to the Kashmir Valley has fallen significantly this year. Tourism players in Kashmir blame “negative campaign” by right wing groups on the social media, besides the unrest, for the 85% slump in the sector. Despite the J&K Tourism department’s campaigns, travel marts and road shows in Rajkot, Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara in Gujarat earlier this year, big tour operators have “dropped Kashmir from the tourism itinerary” this year. “Normally Gujarat tour operators will offer bulk booking of hotel rooms for summer. This year it has come down to

Ahead of decision on fighting Gujarat polls, AAP takes stock Agency | New Delhi

AAP leaders from Gujarat Tuesday apprised the party leadership about the strengths and weaknesses of the organisation ahead of a final decision on whether to contest Assembly polls in the western state. AAP leaders from Gujarat today apprised the party leadership about the strengths and weaknesses of the organisation ahead of a final decision on whether to contest Assembly polls in the western state. A meeting related to this was held by AAP’s Gujarat in-charge and Delhi Labour Minister Gopal Rai. Prior to its poor performance in Punjab and Goa and its humiliating drubbing in the MCD polls, the AAP had announced to contest Gujarat polls, a state which has been ruled by the BJP since 1998. It deputed its Matiala MLA Gulab Singh to build the party organisation there. After Narendra Modi’s exit as chief minis-

ter from the state after his victory in 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Gujarat has witnessed two chief ministers in a span of two-and-a-half years. The ruling BJP had to face the Patidar agitation and protests by Dalits following the flogging of Dalit men in Una. The AAP saw an opportunity in the state as Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal made several visits to Gujarat, attacking the ruling BJP dispensation and boosting the morale of the party cadre. Kejriwal was supposed to address a volunteers’ meeting in March and then ‘gheroa’ the Gujarat chief minister.

However, after the party’s dismal performance in Punjab, Goa and Delhi MCD polls, the focus has again shifted on securing Delhi, its home turf. “The AAP’s national convener (Kejriwal) will be apprised about the feedback received from our Gujarat leaders. We are hopeful that a final call will be taken by tomorrow,” an AAP leader said. Prior to its poor performance in Punjab and Goa and its humiliating drubbing in the MCD polls, the AAP had announced to contest Gujarat polls, a state which has been ruled by the BJP since 1998.

‘Yoga Anushthan’: AMC steps up fogging for Yoga Day

Following a worldwide alert for Zika in Ahmedabad, in the run-up to the mega ‘Yoga Anushthan’ event at GMDC grounds, a worried Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) health department has ordered extra fogging machines to intensify its anti-vector activities. Although the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) monsoon forecast for 2017 had some good news in store for a parched nation battling drought and water scarcity, when it said India would receive 98 percent of the annual average rainfall, there is a disconcerting caveat in store: The monsoon’s arrival will be delayed by around four days, due to the Cyclone Mora. The Southwest Monsoon had made landfall on the Kerala coast on 30 May, four days ahead of schedule, and was said to be making rapid progress across the Indian peninsula subsequently. It was supposed to reach Mumbai on 8 June. However, as mentioned by a report in The Times of India, the rain clouds’ advance came to a halt after 2 June, on account of Mora which cooled down sea surface temperatures and reduced convection and cloud cov-

Farmers’ body threatens to stop milk supply in Gujarat

SS News | Ahmedabad A farmers’ body has threatened to stop supply of milk in the state if the Gujarat government fails to ensure regular payment for the milk they sell at village-level milk societies. According to Bharatiya Kisan Union (A), since the demonetisation move, lakhs of farmers in the state are forced to travel up to 12 km and stand in long queues to get their payments. Earlier, milk farmers used to get paid in cash at their respective societies. “It was said that things will improve after 50 days of demonetisation. Over 150 days have passed and yet farmers are not getting their payments on time,” said Ravi Patel, president of

Gujarat unit of Bharatiya Kisan Union. Now, payments by district dairy unions are done every fortnight.Of the 24 lakh milk producers in the state, 10 lakh milk producers don’t have access to any banking facility in their vicinity. They have to travel long distances and at times are asked to return the next day to get their remuneration,” he said. The body has claimed that around 200 farmers will join the agitation that will be launched on Wednesday from near Amul Dairy’s premises in Anand. Later, it has plans to take out a `padyatra’ from Sardar Patel statue near Amul Dairy to district collectorate’s office where it will submit a memorandum.
