India may have wrapped up the first Test against South Africa in just under three days but skipper Virat Kohli today said that there were “no demons” in the wicket, though he admitted it was more of a bowlers’ game. Chasing a 218-run target on a turning track, the Proteas were bundled out for 109 runs in 39.5 overs in the final session as the match ended inside three days at the IS Bindra stadium here to give India a 1-0 lead in the four-Test series.

Manipuri woman found dead in Navi Mumbai Agency | Mumbai

A 34-year-old woman from Manipur fell to death from the balcony of a third floor flat in Kharghar in adjoining Navi Mumbai, under mysterious circumstances. The incident occurred at Siddhivinayak Darshan CHS in Sector-34 yesterday, police said today. Niang Ngaih Vung, who lived with her Nigerian partner in Sector 2 in Koparkhairane, had gone with him to Kharghar for the birthday party of his Nigerian friend.

Excise duty on petrol hiked by Rs 1.6/ litre, diesel by 40 paisa Agency | New Delhi

The government, late on Friday night, hiked excise duty on petrol by Rs 1.60 per litre and the same on diesel by 40 paisa/ litre to mop up additional revenue to meet budgetary targets. The basic excise duty on unbranded or normal petrol was increased from Rs 5.46 per litre to Rs 7.06 a litre, according to a CBEC notification. After including additional and special excise duty, the total levy on petrol will be Rs 19.06 per litre as against present levy of Rs 17.46. Similarly on unbranded or normal diesel, excise duty has been increased from Rs 4.26 per litre to Rs 4.66 a litre. After including special excise duty, total incidence of excise duty

on diesel will be Rs 10.66 per litre as against the initial Rs 10.26. The excise duty on branded petrol has been hiked from Rs 6.64 to Rs 8.24 per lire. Special and additional excise duty of Rs 12 per litre will continue as before. On branded diesel, excise duty has been increased from Rs 6.62 to Rs 7.02 per litre. Additional excise duty of Rs 6 per litre will continue as

before. The government had previously, in four instalments, raised excise duty on petrol and diesel between November and January to take away the reduction in retail rates that was warranted from falling international oil prices. The four excise duty hikes between November and January totalled Rs 7.75 per litre on petrol and Rs 6.50 a litre on diesel.

ger blow when he castled Hashim Amla, the South Africa captain offering no shot to a ball that crashed onto his middle stump. Leg spinner Amit Mishra drove home the advantage by bowling AB de Villiers, for the second time in the Test, with a flighted delivery that sneaked through the South African talisman’s defence. Stiaan van Zyl (36) offered some resistance, but it was too little in the face of some aggressive spin bowling on a spiteful track by Jadeja and Ashwin, who

also finished with eight wickets from the match. South Africa had earlier roared back into contention with off-spinner Simon Harmer (461) and leggie Imran Tahir (4-48) tormenting India’s batsmen before the hosts folded for 200 in their second innings. Resuming on 1252 in a low-scoring match, India’s hopes of batting the visitors out of the contest received a boost when a groin injury prevented Proteas pace spearhead Dale Steyn from adding his considerable weight to the tour-

ists’ attack. The visitors, however, refused to throw in the towel and claimed an astonishing six wickets for 24 runs to peg back India, who were cruising along at 161-2 at one stage. Overnight batsmen Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli began well, looking largely untroubled in their 66-run stand. Part-timer Van Zyl claimed the vital breakthrough for South Africa when he induced an edge from Kohli (29) and Vilas, standing up, took a good catch behind the stumps.

Bihar polls: Divisive politics dominated the Bihar campaign

The strangest things happen in politics, especially at election time and particularly in the state of Bihar where, in essence, the fight is between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. To the best of my knowledge and belief, no PM has ever spent so much time and energy on holding rallies during a state assembly election as Modi has done in Bihar. For his part, Nitish has entered into an alliance with his bitterest rival, Lalu Prasad, who cannot contest the election because of his conviction in the massive fodder scam case. He is busy, therefore, promoting his dynasty. In this context, it is surprising that the reservation of seats in legislatures and government jobs for Dalits, Adivasis and OBCs should have become such a big bone of contention between the two sides. In all fairness, it must be acknowledged that the starting point of the escalating dispute was a statement by Mohan Bhagwat, the chief of the Sangh Parivar, at the beginning of the election campaign. He blandly suggested that the time had come for the appointment of a committee to review the entire system of reservations. He added that economic plight, rather than caste, should be the deciding factor in this regard. From the RSS point of view, this makes sound sense. There can be no Hindu Rashtra if Hindu society is not solidly united. Caste will surely be an instrument to fragment it. But Bhagwat seems not to have realised that his plea would create a huge problem for Modi and his righthand man, Amit Shah. They moved fast to slam the jubilant cry of caste leaders that the BJP had served notice that it would abolish the existing reservations. They emphatically iterated that their party favoured caste-based reservations and would stick to them. At his next election rally, the PM spoke about a “quota conspiracy”. Lalu and Nitish, he declared, were “conspiring” to snatch away a proportion of reservations from the Dalits, Mahadalits, OBCs and EBCs to give these to “another community”. He must have had reasons not to name the community. But Shah removed all ambiguity on this subject. He proclaimed that if the BJP lost the election in Bihar for any reason, Pakistan would explode crackers. He explained that in order to placate his “vote bank”, Nitish never arrested terrorists, which endeared him to Pakistan. Even if Nitish and Lalu win by a landslide, they will not be able to amend the Constitution, which is Parliament’s job. In any case, why would they “snatch from the plates of Dalits and backwards and serve it to the minorities”?

real Indian food: Slash Agency | Mumbai

Grammy Award-winning musician Slash, a former guitarist of cult rock band Guns N’ Roses, is in India to enthrall his fans with a two-city tour. He says he wants to do “many things”, including digging into traditional Indian food. The rock icon is looking forward to his performances for MTV Indies Xtreme, organised by LIVE Viacom18, in Mumbai on Saturday, and in Bengaluru on November 14. “I’m really excited to be coming back to India! Fortunately, we’re going to be in two different locations, both of which are well known to me. But there are so many things that I’d want to do, so it’s really a matter of seeing how much we can do in the short time we have allotted. “If my memory serves me, the

Supreme Court orders Aditya Pancholi and family to vacate the Mumbai bungalow Agency | Mumbai

Supreme Court has ordered actor Aditya Pancholi to vacate his Mumbai bungalow by the end of the year. “You are a big man. You can buy a flat. Your conduct is not acceptable,” said the apex court. The Pancholis have rented the bungalow near ISKCON temple in Juhu since 1960 for Rs 150 a month. The suit was filed by Tarabai Hate, owner of the bungalow, in July 1977 under the Bombay Rents, Hotel, Lodging House Rates Control Act, 1947 upon Pancholi’s failure to pay three months rent. Last month the Bombay High Court ruled against Pancholi and ordered them to move out and pay

Selena Gomez’s life has been constantly under scrutiny ever since she started her showbiz journey at the age of seven and the former Disney star says it is strange to grow up in the public eye. The 23-year-old singer, however, is keen to prove herself despite the constant focus on her personal life. “I have lived some life. I now get it. My goals have surpassed me. I just want to keep striving. There have been a lot of ups and downs. “It is really awkward growing up in front of everybody. I am just

trying to figure out how to do it,” Gomez said in an interview in Cancun, Mexico while promoting her latest film “Hotel Transylvania 2”. Her romance with pop star Justin Bieber was a constant fodder for paparazzi but Gomez says she does not regret it and her song ‘Heart Wants What It Wants’ was her way of talking about it. “It is obvious I have been in love. I don’t regret anything. I wholeheartedly loved someone and I don’t regret that at all. “The song was my way of talking about what everybody was talking about. It was not bashing. It was like

‘I don’t care what people say, this is what I felt, this is what I feel and this is how I am going to say it’. Then I left it alone.” Gomez says “Revival”, her latest album which released last month, has been a “big goal” for her. “This album has been a big goal of mine. I am executive producing it. I wrote more than half of the album. Now I can say ‘I have been through things because when I am 15, why am I singing about heartbreak? I don’t know what it is. I don’t think I have even remotely felt that’. But the kind of life I have lived, I have a lot to say.”

Agency | Mumbai Actress Deepika Padukone has openly called her “Bajirao Mastani” co-star Ranveer Singh “hot” on micro-blogging site Twitter. Deepika, 29, who has always been tight-lipped about her alleged romace with Ranveer, finally reciprocated the fondness as she tweeted the actor’s solo poster along with heart-eyed emoticons. “Hello Hotness! #BajiraoMastani @RanveerOfficial,” she captioned the pic. The “Piku” star and

Ranveer, 30, who came close during the shoot of “Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela”, had earlier praised each others work on Twitter. In “Bajirao Mastani”, Ranveer plays the mighty Maratha warrior Peshwa Bajirao while Deepika will be seen donning the role of his second wife Mastani. Also starring Priyanka Chopra as Kashi Bai (Bajirao’s first wife), the Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed film will hit theatres on December 18.

Love is blind. The process of falling in love does not have boundaries and restrictions. This understanding is shown beautifully in Yaara Silly Silly. The movie revolves around a sex worker, Mallika (Paoli Dam) and her one night with a client, Sammy (Parambrata Chatterjee) who was forcefully taken to her by two of his friends. Unlike her other clients, Sammy looks at Mallika as a woman and not as an object. He treats her with utmost respect and refuses to take advantage of

for her to feel like a complete woman. Mallika is utterly charmed and falls in love with Sammy but as fate would have it, Sammy is still in love with his ex-girlfriend Akshara (Vidya Malvade). In the present time, Sammy and Mallika (now named Devanshi) connect like two soul mates would.

Bollywood actor Anupam Kher on Saturday led a march to Rashtrapati Bhavan alleging that the “award-wapsi” campaign over the ‘growing intolerance’ was to defame the country by projecting a “wrong” picture of the situation. “India is a very tolerant country. Xiaomi sells over 1 mn handsets in July-Sept quarter

Agency | New Delhi Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has sold over a million units in the quarter ended September 30, growing about 45 percent sequentially. “We have had our best ever quarter (July-September) with sales of more than one million units. We have been witnessing about 45 percent sequential growth for the last three quarters,” Xiaomi India Head Manu Jain said. However, the sales numbers are in contrast to data shared by research firm Counterpoint Research which in a report said Xiaomi had seen a drop in shipments sequentially due to fierce competition from Lenovo and Micromax’s Yu. Jain said the sales were led by a strong demand for Redmi 2 Prime smartphones that are assembled at a plant run by Foxconn in Andhra Pradesh. He, however, declined to give specific shipment details. Mi.com site, which sells Xiaomi smartphones and other accessories to consumers through a marketplace model, was attracting millions of customers, he said. Xiaomi had started its own e-commerce portal in June this year.

Google looking at designing it’s own chips for Android smartphones

Agency | New Delhi Would the other, non-partner chipset makers be upset? One of the first things I’d hope Google includes in a chip design is more security at the hardware level; something BlackBerry has attempted to do with the Priv. So every flagship from every smartphone brand this year will sport a Snapdragon 810 chipset. So yeah, it actually makes a lot of sense for Google and its Android team to approach someone like Qualcomm and say, “Yo, guys, we think we have some really good ideas as to how your processors could run a hell of a lot better on Android, you know, the operating system we control”. If Google is working on its own processor project, then it’ll have to find a willing partner.

Shikhar Dhawan might have had a nightmarish time with the bat in the ongoing first cricket Test against South Africa, but former India captain Sunil Gavaskar on Friday came in support of the opener, saying going by his record the left-hander deserves another chance. Shikhar has been struggling for runs of late and was dismissed for ducks in both the innings of the Mohali Test. Asked whether he should be given a break, Gavaskar said, “It’s a tough call but when you look at his Test record in the previous two Test matches he got a

hundred.” “He struggled in the ODIs and then got a half-century in the final ODI and I think may be he deserves another Test because once again if you leave him you have two right-handers at the crease. I would certainly want to give Shikhar Dhawan another chance,” he said. Gavaskar feels going by the way the pitch

is behaving anything close to 300 would be a winning score for India. “I think ideally anything close to 300 but the way the pitch is behaving and the ball is turning anything like 200 would also be good enough. But I think closer to 300 would be pretty much difficult for the South Africans to chase,” he said.

India v/s South Africa 1st Test: How the host broadcaster almost influenced the umpire’s decisions Agency | Mohali

For any visiting cricket team, playing Test cricket in the sub-continent is always challenging. It becomes even more so when India object to Decision Review System (DRS), citing less than 100 per cent accuracy. Having taken such a hard stand against DRS, it has always been expected from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to ensure that the game is played in the fairest of manners on home grounds. However, when Ravindra Jadeja had AB de Villiers caught at slip in the 45th over of the South African innings on Friday, with the batsman on seven, the third umpire’s decision could have created a huge controversy, courtesy the callousness of the host broadcaster. The on-field umpire Kumar Dharmasena, after giving De Villiers

out, checked with the third umpire, Vineet Kulkarni, to see where Jadeja’s front foot landed. It was a safety measure to check if the bowler had bowled a No Ball. But what happened in the next two minutes was just shocking. The third umpire was trying to check Jadeja’s front foot – whether it was within the legitimate limits – as the official broadcaster played

out replays to facilitate the TV umpire with different angle views. The first replay clearly showed that Jadeja bowled a No Ball, the first one of his 12-Test long career – and De Villiers was not walking back to the pavilion. The other angles were not clear till a slide was played to suggest that Jadeja’s front foot had landed well inside the front crease.

BJP intensified its campaigning for elections to the Rajkot Municipal Corporation with ministers Govind Patel and Vijay Rupani on Friday terming the Patidar agitation for quota benefits as a proxy war by Congress to overcome dominance of the saffron party in Gujarat politics. The party, however, fielded 20 Patidars, its biggest representation to any community the poll. ary 5 after Gujarat Police completes its probe. The next 45 days are crucial for Gujarat government since municipal and panchayat polls are to be conducted in the state. The polls had to be delayed owing to the quota agitation led by Hardik, who will now remain in custody till completion of polls. During the hearing Friday, the bench

said it would adjourn the matter to enable police to conclude the probe and submit a report to the court. The police, it added, will not file a chargesheet or closure report in the case. Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Gujarat government, sought one-and-a-half month for state police to complete the probe. Senior advo-

cate Kapil Sibal, who appeared for Hardik, did not press for interim bail as the bench observed that investigation must be allowed to go on and that it is setting a deadline for the police to conclude it. The top court also refused to interfere with proceedings of Gujarat High Court, which is conducting an inquiry into a case in which Hardik has been accused of stage-managing his own abduction. Sibal pleaded that the other case should also be transferred to the apex court. Rohatgi opposed the plea, saying the High Court is seized of the matter and has been issuing orders.

Justice J B Pardiwala of the high court, who called for abolition of the practice of Bal Diksha and refused to drop charges against the monk, expressed dismay at the proposal. He lamented the demand becau se it had hindered

While Iyer hit five sixes and 14 fours in his 110-knock that lasted three hours, Sharma – released from the first Test team after failing to make the eleven at Mohali – utilised the opportunity to occupy the crease for 194 minutes while striking one six and 13 fours in 128 balls. Both the batsmen played strokes all round the wicket and hardly looked in trouble against UP attack that was without left-arm spinner Saurabh Kumar, who took ten wickets in their previous game against Gujarat at Valsad. After the openers put on 55 for the first wicket, Iyer

got involved in a century stand worth 106 with left-handed Herwadkar for the second wicket and then put on 98 for the third wicket with Sharma who started slowly before opening up to notch his 14th Ranji ton. Iyer, who scored 173 against Baroda and 200 against Punjab, apart from an invaluable 83 against Tamil Nadu earlier, compiled his fifth first class hundred before edging Bhuvneshwar Kumar to wicket keeper Eklavya Dwivedi in the second over after tea. However, Sharma continued to punish the bowlers as he added 99 runs for the fourth wicket with Yadav to demoralise the UP attack. At stumps, Siddesh Lad (12) was with him.
