Our fight against black money, corruption not political: PM Modi in Rajya Sabha

Only Manmohan Singh knew the art of bathing wearing a raincoat: PM Modi PM Modi in Rajya Sabha said, “Corruption has hurt the economy and common man.”

Agency | New Delhi There was an uproar in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday as the Opposition staged a walkout over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks on former prime minister and senior Congress leader Manmohan Singh. Taking a dig at Singh, PM Modi said, “For almost 35 years, Manmohan Singh ji had a lot of influence on country’s economic policies. There was not a single corruption charge against him. The art of taking bath wearing a raincoat can be learnt only from Manmohan Singh.” Responding to the walkout, PM said if they breach

decorum, they should have courage to listen to the response too. Meanwhile, when asked for his comments on PM Modi’s remarks by said. Manmohan Singh refused to comment. Replying to a motion of thanks today, the prime minister defended the government’s demonetisation move saying note ban isn’t a political fight or a move

to target any party. “Corruption has hurt the economy and common man. We will have to be tough on those cheating the system, when we do that, hands of the poor will be strengthened,” said PM Modi, adding that “in 40 days almost 700 Maoists surrendered during the period of November-December.” Speaking on demonetisation, the prime

For the second time in a row, the Reserve bank today opted for a status quo in its key rates but shifted the stance of the monetary policy from ‘accommodative’ to ‘neutral’. “The decision of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is consistent with a neutral stance of monetary

policy in consonance with the objective of achieving consumer price index (CPI) inflation at 5 per cent by Q4 of 2016-17 and the medium-term target of 4 per cent within a band of +/- 2 per cent, while sup-

porting growth,” it said. Accordingly, the repo rate at which it lends to the system stands at 6.25 per cent and the reverse repo rate at which it absorbs excess liquidity is also retained at 5.75 per cent. The monetary policy committee said it is “committed to bringing headline inflation closer to 4.0 per cent on a durable basis and in a calibrated manner”.

minister said what India did will be a case study for economists worldwide. “You quote foreign economists, I can quote 10 of them on the fact that such an action hasn’t been taken in the world ever. Worlds’ economists don’t know parameters to assess it.What India did will be a case study for economists worldwide.” He also defended the Reserve Bank of India Governor Urjit Patel for the demonetisation move when he said,”Attacks on my party, our govt, on me understandable but why was RBI Governor dragged into this, it was not good.” The prime minister also hit out at the Congress citing a book written by former bureaucrat Madhav Godbole where he wrote that in 1971 Indira Gandhi was advised by then Finance Minister to demonetise, but she rejected idea. “You (Anand Sharma) are showing so much zeal, why were you quiet till now? Why did you not sue Madhav Godbole?” asked the Prime Minister. Over the issue of new notes recovered from terrorists in Kashmir, PM Modi slammed the Opposition saying, “A few people

are raising the issue of new notes being recovered from terrorists in Kashmir. I want to tell the banks were looted by them and then they were shot dead by the forces.” Meanwhile, the Opposition took a dim view of his speech. Congress leader Kapil Sibal said, “Look at his arrogance, he chooses to speak when everyone else is done and then makes unsubstantiated allegations.” Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel also condemned his remark on Manmohan Singh. “I don’t have words to condemn his remarks on Manmohan Singh,” he said.

Key accused among two held in Naliya gang rape case Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

Gujarat Government’s Special Investigation Team has arrested two more persons, including the prime accused who is a BJP worker, in connection with the alleged gang rape of a 24-year-old woman in Naliya town of Kutch district, taking the number of accused in police custody so far to five. The SIT had yesterday arrested Vinod Thakkar (67), his son Chetan Thakkar (35) and one Ashwin Thakkar (44) in connection with the oneyear-old case. They were produced in a court in Naliya, which remanded them in police custody for 14 days. “Those arrested today are identified as Shantilal Solanki (48), who is the prime accused, and Bharat Darji (37), both residents of Naliya,”

stated an official release by Kutch Local Crime Branch (LCB) police inspector and SIT head J M Aal. In her FIR, the woman, currently living in Mumbai with her husband, had alleged she was raped by at least nine men on different occasions when she used to work as a clerk at Solanki’s gas agency in Naliya. She alleged Solanki, Darji and Vipul Thakkar offered her a spiked cold drink and raped her when she had gone to Solanki’s house to take a salary advance. As per her FIR filed at Naliya

police station on January 25, the trio filmed the act and raped her on several occasions later by threatening to circulate the video clip. On one occasion, she was raped by Vipul Thakkar and Solanki in the latter’s car. She was also sexually assaulted by other accused. Since Solanki is associated with the BJP, he, along with three members of the party, namely Govind Parumalani, Ajit Ramvani and Vasant Bhanushali were suspended two days back after their names found mention in the complaint.

RBI to raise weekly withdrawal limit for savings accounts to Rs 50,000 from Feb 20, no limit from March 13 Agency | New Delhi

In a major relief to people across the country, the Reserve Bank of India announced on Wednesday that the weekly withdrawal limit from savings account will be raised to Rs 50,000 from February 20, while adding there will be no limit from March 13 onward. The central bank has last month retained the weekly withdrawal limit of Rs 24,000 on savings bank accounts despite the Election Commission asking it to relax

the weekly limits for candidates contesting the Assembly elections in five states. “The limits on cash withdrawal from savings bank accounts continue to be in place. In line with the pace of remonetisation, it

has now been decided to remove these limits in two stages,” said RBI Deputy Governor R Gandhi. “Effective February 22, 2017, the limits from cash withdrawal from savings bank accounts will be enhanced

to Rs 50,000 per week from the current limit of Rs 24,000 per week (and) effective March 13, 2017, there will be no limits prescribed by RBI on cash withdrawal from savings bank accounts.” He was speaking to the media, along with RBI Governor Urjit Patel, after the central bank announced the sixth bi-monthly monetary policy review. After demonetisation move by the government last year, withdrawing the legal tender status of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.

ed as all AIADMK workers work for the welfare of the party. “A true AIADMK worker will not go against the welfare of the party, nobody can divide us,” Sasikala said. “After Amma’s demise, the supporters asked me to take the responsibility. I couldn’t as I was very sad,” Sasikala said. “Neither AIAD-

MK nor me will be cowed down.” Alleging yet again that this rebellion had been motivated by the opposition, the general secretary said Panneerselvam has connived with the party that Amma fought against. She reiterated that the party will only follow Amma’s path. “Our opponents are after us and spearheading whatever is happening today, but nothing can stop us from following Amma’s path. I could sense the acts of CM who completely connived with the opposition. Panneerselvam colluded with the party which Amma fought against,” she said.

Earlier, Uddhav Thackeray, speaking to reporters after meeting Patel, said: “After a long

time, we will be contesting elections outside Maharashtra. If the people of Gujarat want, we will contest elections in Gujarat as well. And Hardik Patel will be one of our leading faces in this fight.” He said the Sena had to reconsider its relationship with BJP after the two parties decided to go separate ways in elections to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

AIADMK has been seeing high-voltage drama that began Tuesday night after the never-before rebel O Panneerselvam stood up against party general secretary VK Sasikala and claimed that he was forced to resign from his post of chief minister of Tamil Nadu. Taking the battle forward, Sasikala addressed the media Wednesday, casting Panneerselvam as a ‘traitor’ and said that traitors have never won and that they will be shown the right path. She also said it was her responsibility now to

bring Panneerselvam’s ‘wrongdoings’ to a stop. “History has shown us that traitors have never won. We will show the traitors the true path of Amma. It became my responsibility to put an end to the wrongdoings which Panneerselvam had done,” she said. She further said that the party will not be divid-

Sasikala or O Panneerselvam? The 4 possibilities in Tamil Nadu’s political tangle The fast-changing political situation in Tamil Nadu has produced a clutch of possibilities in the power struggle between chief minister O Panneerselvam and AIADMK chief Sasikala Natarajan — elevated to their current ranks after the death of J Jayalalithaa, who held both positions. The 66-year-old Panneerselvam, also known as OPS, was stand-in chief minister twice when Jayalalithaa was barred from holding public office because of litigations against her. He was the so-called “natural choice” when the AIADMK leader died on December 5 after a cardiac arrest. Sasikala — the departed leader’s closest aide and one-time conscience keeper — took over the party’s top post within days of Jayalalithaa’s death. The 59-year-old’s elevation triggered a rebellion, with Panneerselvam and several top leaders going against her. Sasikala insists party legislators are backing her. The Panneerselvam camp is digging in its heels. And governor C Vidyasagar Rao is yet to take a decision. Thereby hangs several scenarios. Scenario One: The majority of 133 AIADMK legislators, barring a vacant seat after Jayalalithaa’s death, pledge support to Sasikala. The governor invited her to form a new government and adhere to a deadline to prove her strength with a trust vote in the assembly. She could pass the test if the numbers she demonstrated at the party headquarters on Wednesday are any indication. Scenario Two: Governor allows Panneerselvam to continue until a clear picture emerges. Also, the governor may like to wait as the Supreme Court is expected to rule on a disproportionate assets case against Sasikala next week. If Sasikala is acquitted, the road is clear for her. If convicted, she cannot hold any constitutional position such as the chief minister’s post. The AIADMK will then have to elect another leader and stake claim if the legislators don’t want Panneerselvam to continue. Scenario Three: The governor recommends President’s rule. It will lead to fresh elections. If the AIADMK can put its house in order, it can get another chance to form the government and avoid going to the polls without their charismatic leader, Jayalalithaa. There are four more years till the current assembly’s term expires. No AIADMK legislator will be in the mood for fresh elections, and will try to avoid facing the ballot. Scenario Four: Governor allows Panneerselvam to continue and asks him to prove support from the majority of legislators. He says many MLAs are with him, and more will take his side in the next few days. But to break away from the AIADMK, he needs at least 90 of the 133 party legislators to avoid disqualification under the anti-defection law.

For Those with Type 2 Diabetes, EatingAlmonds May Improve Health Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

If you have type 2 diabetes, eating almonds as part of a healthy diet may help improve glycemic and cardiovascular measures and lead to better health. Those are the findings from a new study published in the journal Metabolic Syndrome and Related Disorders and funded by the Almond Board of California. India is known as the diabetes capital of the world, with incidence of type 2 diabetes currently reaching epidemic proportions. Once deemed a disease of the affluent, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes now cuts across all social, demographic and age groups.Researchers attribute this higher and earlier incidence of type 2 diabetesin part to the “South Asian phenotype,”a genetic predisposition that makes Indians more susceptible to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Dietary and lifestyle interventions are an important part of diabetes treatment, and multiple studies to date demonstrate the positive health benefits of including almonds among North American and Taiwanesepopulations.Dr. AnoopMisra and Dr. Seema Gulati, PhD were interested in learning if including almonds, already a familiar food in the Indian diet, might help improve glycemic control and improve cardiovascular risk factors associated with type 2 diabetes within an Indian population.

Never the one to underestimate opposition, Indian captain Virat Kohli today said Bangladesh have it in them to become a force in the Test arena provided they play the five-day format more often. Kohli made the observation in the pre-match press conference of the one-off Test against the neighbours starting tomorrow. “I think they have the skill they just don’t play that many Test matches to gain confidence as a squad. It’s very basic. They have become a very good one-day side because of the fact that they play so many ODIs and they

have their set combinations. If you don’t play Test cricket very often, you will never understand the mindset. That’s where it comes from,” Kohli said. “They have beaten all the sides in

one-day cricket, because they know how to play the format. You can practice as much as you want but game time is important. Ability is going to be there. It’s the mindset that changes from for-

mat to format,” h e added. “I am sure that if they play more Test cricket they will become solid Test players and a solid Test team as well. I think it should be pushed. They certainly have the ability to compete at the Test level.” Kohli also backed the idea of Bangladesh touring India more often for bilateral series terming the one-off match as a historic moment. “They haven’t come to India much is what I have recently found out. We’ve gone to Bangladesh quite a bit but they have never been to India for a bilateral before this. So yes, it is a historic moment for both teams and the countries as well. I hope this can happen much more. We have gone there too many times, they should come here more often.

Ajinkya Rahane should walk back into the Indian Test team. He deserves a longer rope Agency | Mumbai

On a December morning baked in the sun, the Wankhede was abuzz with the return of Test cricket. Ever since it had hosted Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell game out of turn in November 2013 against the West Indies, Mumbai had been deprived of international red ball cricket. But with England’s arrival late last year, Test cricket returned to Mumbai. The cricket lovers of the city had thronged the stadium. The flags were out, the chants were sung and the Mexican wave made an appearance too. A packed Wankhede can be electrifying. A Wankhede packed with fans, who shout and scream their lungs out in support of the Indian team, can

intimidate an opponent player but also inspire a local hero. As a team, India emerged as champions of the world six years ago at the venue. As an individual player, Sachin Tendulkar was put on a pedestal reserved only for God in his bastion. But with Sachin Tendulkar away from the cricket fields, the Wankhede was in search of a new hero. Mumbai’s voice demanded a new direction. Ajinkya Rahane had been India’s standout Test batsman for the last couple years. His teammates had come across as novices but he had emerged as the sultan of the swing in New Zealand, the master of the seam in England and the tamer of the bounce in

Australia. He was also the lone Mumbaikar in the Indian squad in the build up to the city’s reunion with Test cricket. Thus, the platform was set for Rahane to be at the beat of Wankhede’s heart. The only blip was that he had failed in the five instances he had walked out to bat
