Agency News: New Delhi On a bright February morning, 101-year-old Layak Ram makes for a picture of steely resolve as he speaks about the ongoing farmers’ protests against three laws enacted by the Centre in September to open up the country’s agricultural markets.“ I am not going anywhere till the farm laws are repealed,” said the centenarian, clad in a white kurta-pyjama and a grey jacket, resting against a pile of blankets inside a yellow tarpaulin tent pitched under the Delhi-Meerut expressway at the Ghazipur border. The Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border is one of the epicentres of the farmers’ 75-day-old campaign against the agricultural laws they say would erode their bargaining power, put them at the mercy of powerful agribusinesses and could lead to the dismantling of the system

Serum Institute of India may soon ship ‘Covishield’ COVID-19 vaccine to UK The Serum Institute of India (SII) may soon ship Covishield vaccine to the United Kingdom, where there has been a rise in the number of corona cases as well as its new variant. This was the outcome of a meeting between the UK Secretary of State for International Trade Liz Truss and SII CEO Adar Poonawala on Monday. While a formal decision is yet to be reached, the SII has hinted that it has enough stock to cater to the UK’s requirement. In the inoculation drive across India, so far, the side effects reported have been negligible. Poonawala tweeted, “It was an honour to have the Secretary of State for International Trade, UK, @trusslizand a delegation visit our headquarters@ SerumInstIndia. We discussed how to further enhance the existing relationship between India and the UK on manufacturing and innovation in the healthcare space.”However, sources in the know told The Free Press Journal, “SII has sufficient stock but the Government of India has put a curb on the supply of Covishield in India and later, it will allow sale and export. Besides, the UK health regulator will have to give its clearance after its team visit to Pune and other necessary formalities.’’ Sources said the AstraZeneca/Oxford has already entered into a longterm agreement with SII for technology transfer and also for vaccine supply. Sources said the SII has enough stock but as per the Centre’s decision, the vaccine is supplied for restricted emergency.

Elderly protesters recount ’88 stir, stare Uttarakhand flash floods: At least 26 at a long haul dead, 171 still missing amid rescue ops of minimum support prices (MSPs) for farm produce. Ram, who arrived at the Ghazipur site from Amroha, Uttar Pradesh, in November, is one of the oldest protesters in the agitation and one of the few who also participated in the late Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Mahendra Singh Tikait’s movement that brought Delhi to a halt in 1988. About half-a-million farmers from western Uttar Pradesh arrived in Delhi in October 1988 and took over the Boat Club lawns in the heart of the Capital, close to Parliament, with demands ranging from more remunerative prices for farm produce to cuts in power and water tariffs. Ram remembers that protest well. “The place had turned into a village panchayat, with charpoys, hookahs, bullock carts and buffaloes all around. That is where we cooked, ate and slept,” he said.

‘Team NaMo’ campaigns once again amid chants of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ at central Kolkata Agency News: Kolkata A day after a team of volunteers campaigning for Prime Minister Narendra Modi was denied entry to the Eco park area by a police official for chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’, the ‘team NaMo’, as they call themselves, was seen campaigning for the BJP amidst roars of ‘Jai Ma Durga’ and ‘Jai Shri Ram’ near Chandni Chowk Metro station in central Kolkata. Talking to the Free Press Journal, Vinod Singh, a BJP activist in West Bengal, said that they are ready to cross all the alleged ‘hurdles’ by the ruling Trinamool Congress

we stop chanting the same? No matter who restricts, a day will come when the rest of Trinamool Congress leaders will also chant the same,” slammed Singh. Abhishek Basu, a visitor to a nearby mall, said that there is no

harm in taking God’s name and also that West Bengal has always celebrated Ram Navami.“Ram worshipped Durga too and Akalbodhan is celebrated as Durga Puja, which is incidentally the biggest festival of eastern India. Why is a section of people deliberately trying to tag Ram just to signify the BJP? After Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that she worships Durga, now even the BJP is chanting Durga’s name,” mentioned the MNC worker. Earlier this day, the same team was seen campaigning for the BJP at the Tollygunge area of South Kolkata.

Navigating India’s dilemmas in the neighbourhood

In the aftermath of Pakistan’s humiliating withdrawal from Kargil, a colleague and I visited Washington for discussions with the United States (US) State Department and other agencies on the situation in India’s western neighbourhood.A session was devoted to Iran. While US officials were hopeful that the Vilayat-e-Faqih, Iran’s foundational clerical system’s popularity may be declining, that was not our assessment. It is no secret that, except during Barack Obama’s presidency, all US administrations have worked diligently for regime change in Iran but without success. Is it ever wise, especially in the longterm, to seek regime change in another State to secure national interest and, if so, for how long can such interests be thus secured?Iran is not the only country where the US has sought to destabilise hostile governments through intensive intervention in domestic politics. Indeed, US interference in the internal affairs of many countries is taken as a fact of international relations even if it may be exaggerated in many cases. What is true for perceptions about the US globally are similar for India regionally. The political and security elites of many of India’s immediate neighbours assume Indian interference, at least on occasion, in their domestic politics as a fact of their political life. What is presumed about India’s role in these neighbouring countries is largely the product of misperceptions, if not myths. The meetings of Indian diplomats and officials in most cases designed to seek information — an entirely legitimate exercise — are given extraneous meanings. Stray comments are construed as part of devious policy. Consequently, India’s assertions of political neutrality are always discounted. As India is presumed to be an active and interventionist player, political groups and actors in neighbouring countries such as Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives and, even at times, in Afghanistan, among others, often seek Indian assistance of various kinds to promote their interests. Sometimes they seek to flaunt their proximity to India and its representatives. Others do the opposite. They take hostile positions against India, complaining of its partisan attitudes and, in this process, stoke national sentiments often couched in stridently anti-Indian terms. This is especially true when territorial differences emerge between India and another country as was witnessed in Nepal last yearIt cannot be claimed that India has maintained a policy of strict neutrality over the past seven decades in matters of its neighbours. Certainly, it has, like any other State, sought to safeguard its interests, especially when political actors have deliberately sought to align themselves with powers hostile to India. This is best illustrated in the case of Maldives President Abdulla Yameen who deliberately and completely irrationally went on provoking India in every possible way.India has also had to take note and caution specific leaders of neighbouring states when they have adopted exclusionary domestic policies that have stoked resentments in India impacting on Indian politics. In both these situations, India has traditionally moved cautiously. The Yameen case was noteworthy for it showcased Chinese aspirations to become a major factor in the national lives of India’s immediate neighbours. Over the past few years, China’s actions and policies all through South Asia and also in India’s maritime neighbourhood, including in the Indian Ocean island countries, have raised the need to give deep consideration to India’s approach to its neighbours.Naturally, Pakistan is a case apart because of the nature of the bilateral relationship and the increasing consolidation of its nexus with China. That Chinese moves in India’s neighbouring countries significantly impact Indian interests is an obvious reality. It is also a reality that some neighbours attempt to leverage an engagement with China to seek, if nothing else, better terms with India in critical areas. How should India deal with its neighbours in the light of these considerations which will only increase in future? Should it clearly articulate red - Kapilkumar M. Centre orders Twitter to block 1,178 accounts Agency News: New Delhi Microblogging website Twitter has been instructed by the Indian government to remove over a thousand Twitter accounts that are allegedly used for spreading provocative content and misinformation around the ongoing farmers’ protest. The Union government has claimed that 1,178 Twitter handles have Pakistani and Khalistani users. Twitter, however, is yet to fully comply with the government directive.Interestingly, the Centre had provided the microblogging website with a list of 257 handles and tweets to be blocked for spreading misinformation and provocative content. Twitter had blocked these accounts for a few hours before unilaterally unblocking them. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on February 4 shared a fresh list flagged by security agencies as accounts of Khalistan sympathisers or backed by Pakistan and operating from foreign territories, threatening public order amid the farmers’ protest.“Many of these accounts were also automated

bots that were used for sharing and amplifying misinformation and provocative contents on farmers’ protests,” a source said. A few days ago, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey had “liked” several tweets made by foreignbased celebrities in support of farmer protests, sources said. In view of this, the platform’s defiance of the government’s order to block the accounts raises several questions. “The government also objects to Twitter CEO liking some tweets by celebrities as it raises questions on his neutrality,” the source said.Toolkit controversy The latest move comes amid the “toolkit” controversy surrounding the farmer protest. Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg had last week tweeted a “toolkit” which she later deleted. This document, according to the police, aimed to spread disaffection and illwill against the government of India and sought to create disharmony among various social, religious, and cultural groups. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday said there was a reason why his ministry reacted to the remarks of celebrities like Thunberg.

‘Buddhi-jeevi’ off the hook, the new pariah is ‘andolan-jeevi’ PM Modi aghast to see a new “jamaat” of “andolan-jeevi” who feed on agitations, unmindful of the harm they inflict on the nation

Agency News: New Delhi A combative PM Modi on Monday hit out at those leading the farmers’ agitation for the past 76 days as a new ‘Jamaat’ (breed) of “Andolan-Jeevi -professional protesters -- saying these are the parasites who feast on every agitation. He refused to go on the defensive by making it clear that the three farm laws enacted in September will not be withdrawn, come what may. He told the farmers they were welcome to further dialogue, but not on the repeal of the laws. The farmer leaders responded by asking the prime minister to give the date and time for the talks. Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) leader Shiv Kumar ‘Kaka’ said: “We have never opposed talks. Whenever called, we talked with the

minister; but the logjam is because the government is refusing to repeal the laws and give statutory guarantee of MSP (minimum support price.) SKM, an umbrella organisation of 40- odd farmer unions from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, said

the BJP and their ancestors never mounted any “andolan” (agitation) against the Britishers and therefore they are afraid of people’s protest. The leaders sought to further remind PM Modi that it were the “Aandolan jeevi” who had liberated India from

the yolk of colonial rule.In a reply in Hindi to three days of debate in the Rajya Sabha on a motion of thanks to the President, the prime minister also coined an acronym -- “FDI” -- not the foreign direct investment that his government keeps chasing but instead the “foreign destructive ideology” that is undermining his government’s nationalist agenda. The politically loaded acronym FDI was intended to lampoon the Opposition, certain protesters and foreign individuals who had tweeted in support of the ongoing farmers’ agitation. As he did so, he cautioned the nation against

Karnataka: Anti-cow slaughter Bill passed in Legislative Council Agency News: Bengaluru Despite the Opposition having an upper hand in the number game, the BJP-led BS Yediyurappa government in Karnataka was able to push through the anti-cow slaughter bill in the Legislative Council. The bill, passed by the Legislative Assembly, had faced a stumbling block in

the Council where the BJP had found itself short in numbers. But on Monday,

the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill 2020 was passed in the Legislative Council following a voice vote. Surprisingly, the vote took place even as the legislators from the Congress and JD(S) continued protests, several of them even tearing copies of the Bill in the Council. But the protests looked a

bit stage-managed as the protesting Opposition did not press for a division of votes and allowed the BJP to have the Bill passed through voice votes. The BJP had 28 MLCs present at the time of voting while the Congress and JD(S) collectively had 31 MLCs present. Despite the numbers, the Opposition parties failed to prevent the passage of the Bill.

the venomous influences emanating from abroad.Modi spoke about a new tribe of protesters, which can be spotted in every agitation. “They are parasites who feast on every agitation. When they are not in the front, they operate from behind the curtains. They cannot survive without agitations,” he said.“We are well aware of terms like “buddhi-jeevi” (intellectuals) and “shram- jeevi” (working class), but I am seeing for some time this nascent community of “Andolan-jeevi.” This community can be spotted whenever there is a protest, be it an agitation by lawyers, students or labourers.

Arjun Rampal: You are still out of sight if you do something terrible and no one watches it Actor Arjun Rampal says people did tell him that he shouldn’t stay away from films for a long time. but he argued what’s the use of doing a film which is bad and not even watched by audiences. One might think having been in the films for all this while, he could have ended up doing something which he probably doesn’t realise was a wise decision in hindsight. Agency News: Mumbai Actor Arjun Rampal prefers going by his own pace in his career. Ever since he started working in Bollywood in 2001, till now, he has slowed down on the number of projects he takes up.He hasn’t had a theatrical release in almost three years now. “Sometimes, you take a long gap because you want to be patient that something good is going to come along. When you go in front of the camera (after this while), you think you have

Wasn’t he worried that out of sight for such a long time could have led to out of audiences’ mind too? He said people did tell him that. “I said ‘what’s the point of doing a film which no one is going to watch, and you are going to hate having in your filmography?’ Because you are still out of sight if you have done something terrible, no one watched it. But it’s still

there and you can’t erase that,” says the 48-year-old. One might think having been in the films for all this while, he could have ended up doing something which he probably doesn’t realise was a wise decision in hindsight. But Rampal disagrees. “I don’t regret saying no to films, because it’s your instincts which allow you to say yes or no to a part. Sometimes you say no to a film, and it goes on to become a blockbuster, and

you think ‘oh my God, was that a bad choice?’ Every part in a film is predestined, as to which actor is going to play it. Even though it was written for a particular actor in mind,” he reasons. Giving the example of one of his own films, he continues, “The best example is Rock On!! (2008) The part was not for me, it had gone to two different actors before it came to me. That was predestined for me, to be in my filmography.
