IPLvs Drought: CM admits no Potable Water to Maintain Cricket Grounds

Faced with criticism over large quantity of water usage for pitches for IPL, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today said Maharashtra is fine with the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches being shifted out of the state, but will not provide potable water for maintaining cricket grounds.“Even if IPL is shifted from Maharashtra this season, we do not have any problem. No potable water will be provided for IPL this season,” Fadnavis told reporters on sidelines of an event here. His comments came a day after the Bombay High Court refused to grant a stay on the first of the IPL cricket matches scheduled tomorrow here. With just a day left for the inaugural match, the shadow of the Marathwada drought has fallen on the Indian Premier League (IPL). On Thursday, the Bombay High Court cleared the inaugural match to be held in Mumbai on Saturday, but the fate of 19 others, scheduled to be held in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur, will be decided only after April 12. A day earlier, the court had asked the government: Should the cricket tournament be held when people in drought-hit areas are going without drinking water for days? In framing the question in this manner, the court may well be doing injustice to the serious issue it actually seeks to address. It is true that pitch maintenance requires enormous amounts of water — on an average, one lakh litres of water is used up per day in the run-up to a match. But so do many other activities that may appear less compelling when compared to the water needs of households and farmers. It is facile to draw a link between drought relief and socio-economic activity-as-usual and insist that the latter be summarily brought to a halt for the former. Such a demand encourages false oppositions which eventually distract from the search for the real solutions. Water, especially in times of drought, needs to be used judiciously and the Maharashtra government has done well to initiate some steps to regulate its supply and consumption in the context of the crisis in the state. In the longer run, the economics of water extraction, distribution and consumption is a complex phenomenon that defies one-stop prescriptions. The IPL is a massive economic activity that provides livelihood to thousands of people and its scale necessitates meticulous planning. To disrupt its organisation so close to the event would lead to logistical problems — without delivering on the real intent, which is helping Marathwada overcome its water crisis. The immediate drinking water supply issue must be met by improving the delivery of potable water using more tankers, water trains and other delivery channels. Going ahead, localised water conservation measures, including check dams and farm ponds, should be encouraged.

Karisma-Sunjay divorce: Kids to be with Karisma, Sunjay gets visitation right

Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur come to an agreement

Agency | New Delhi Bollywood actor Karisma Kapoor and estranged husband, business tycoon Sunjay Kapur, brought curtains down on their ugly divorce battle on Friday and signed on a settlement before the Supreme Court. The couple had earlier reached an amicable solution on the financial aspect of their matrimonial dispute. According to the agreement, their children will be with the actor, while Sunjay

would get the visitation right. The couple has two kids, Samaira and Kiaan, from their 13-year-old marriage. The couple will now divorce with mutual consent and Karisma will withdraw a domestic violence case filed against Sunjay within two weeks. The SC also quashed a dowry case lodged by the actor against her husband after she recorded her consent. Earlier, the court had asked the duo to sort out

their matrimonial dispute amicably and said it would help the couple to resolve the differences. Sanjay and Karisma tied the knot in 2003. Things, however, turned sour soon. The two tried to make things work for a few years after the Delhi high court advised the couple to explore the possibility of a settlement. Karisma moved out of Sunjay’s house in 2010 and permanently shifted base to Mumbai. In 2014, the two decided to end their 12 year long marriage and filed for a divorce through mutual consent.

The glitzy Indian Premier League (IPL) starts on Saturday, helping to ease the heartache of millions of fans following India’s failure to win the World T20 on home soil this month. India’s short-form extravaganza, famous for its fireworks and dancing cheerleaders as well as unwanted corruption scandals, gets under way with the Mumbai Indians taking on the Rising Pune Supergiants. I hope IPL helps us overcome the pain of the semis loss,” Kolkata Knight Riders supporter Nehal Ahmed said. The ninth edition of the franchise-based competition, which has revolutionised world cricket, will see eight teams clash in 60 matches at 10 differ-

ent venues across India. “We Indian fans have a short memory. A good two months of IPL and we will forget all about World T20,” said fan Modit Dhasmana, another ardent admirer of IPL’s razzamatazz. The IPL is the most popular domestic league in the world but has been plagued by controversies since its inception in 2008, with corruption and match-fixing cases often taking centre-stage.

IPL 2016: Lasith Malinga unlikely for first half of tournament Agency | Mumbai

Agency | Barcelona The World Bank Group plans to invest more of its funds to help developing countries adapt to the impacts of climate change, in an effort to stop extreme weather and rising seas from making poverty worse. In a climate change action plan released late Thursday, the bank said it would bring early warning systems to an extra 100 million people in 15 developing countries, and social safety nets to protect an additional 50 million people by 2020. The bank will also develop plans for adjusting agriculture to climate shifts in at least 40 countries through measures like hardier seeds, farming methods that capture carbon, and energy-efficient irrigation systems. “If we don’t act, climate change threatens to drive 100 million more people into poverty in the next 15 years,” said John Roome, World Bank Group senior director for climate change.

Sri Lankan ace Lasith Malinga is all but ruled out of this season of the IPL, at least for the first half of the tournament. Malinga last played in his nation’s first Asia Cup match in Bangladesh in February before knee injury kept him out of rest of that tournament and the subsequent World T20. Malinga has not yet joined Mumbai Indians here. “I believe he will join us after the first couple of games,” head coach Ricky Ponting said on Thursday: “Our fitness staff can have a good look at him and assess where he is at. Right now it is unlikely that he will take part for the first half of the tournament. ”Any

side that has Malinga in it is a better side on paper. Back end of last season when we were playing our best cricket, Malinga was bowling at his best as well. He has been one of the great performers throughout world cricket with the new ball and the old ball. So, he will be missed in any team,” he added.Ponting also said his team has ade-

quate players to replace a player of the calibre of Malinga. “If he is going to be ruled out of the tournament, we can’t sit back and think about him. We have to think about who the best replacement for Malinga is. Is it going to be Marchant de Lange or Tim Southee. We have got clear heads as far as selection goes,” Ponting said.

the central agency does not move the High Court within the stipulated time, a copy of the chargesheet will be given to Verma. Verma had sought a copy the chargesheet arguing that he had locus standi since he was member of the Gujarat High Court appointed-Special Investigation Team which first investigated the case and later following the same court’s order he assisted the CBI. During the argument, Verma’s lawyer Rahul Sharma said that “every member of the society has a locus standi to seek documents of a criminal case if there is suspicion that the investigation is being manipulated by the accused”. Verma and the CBI had parted ways on a bitter note following differences when the first chargesheet was filed in 2013.

A fruit a day can keep heart diseases at bay, a new study has found, adding that people who eat fresh fruit regularly are less prone to a heart attack or stroke than people who rarely eat fresh fruit. The results of the international study indicated that a 100g portion of fruit per day reduced about onethird of death by heart related diseases in both men and women. The findings, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, is the result of a seven-year study of half a million adults in China, where fresh fruit consumption is much lower than in countries like the Britain or US. “The association between fruit consumption and cardiovascular risk seems to be stronger in China, where many still eat little fruit, than in high-income countries where daily consumption of fruit is more common,” said lead author Huaidong Du from University of Oxford in Britain. Fruit consumption, mainly apples or oranges was also associated with many other factors, such as education, lower blood pressure, lower blood glucose, and non-smoking, the researchers noted. The team conducted a large, nationwide study of 500,000 adults from 10 urban and rural localities across China, tracking health through death records and electronic hospital records of illness.
