Amid Calls For Proof, Air Force Shows Radar Images Of Pak F-16 Encounter

The Air Force said two parachutes were visually sighted, which were corroborated by radio communication intercepts.

New Delhi : Radar images of an air battle between Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot Abhinandan Varthaman and a Pakistani jet during a February dogfight were shown by the air force today as “irrefutable proof” that a Pakistani F-16 fighter jet had been shot down by India. Last week, American news publication Foreign Policy had contradicted India quoting unnamed US defence officials as saying that Islamabad’s F-16s were counted and “none were missing.” “The IAF has irrefutable evidence of not only use fact that F-16 was used by PAF on 27 February but also that an IAF MiG21 Bison shot down

a PAF F-16,” said Air Vice Marshal RGK Kapoor, the Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Operations and Space). The government had said that in an aerial duel on February 27 - a day after India sent fighter jets to Pakistan’s Balakot to strike a terror training camp - pilot Abhinandan Varthaman had engaged with one of the Pakistani fighter jets that tried to target Indian military facilities, and shot it down before he was hit and forced to eject. Abhinandan Varthaman landed across the Line of Control and was in Pakistani custody for three days before he was returned to India amid attempts to deescalate the crisis between the two sides. The Air Force today said Pakistani aircraft fired multiple AMRAAM missiles which were defeated. “In the aerial combat that

followed one MiG 21 Bison of the IAF piloted by Wing Commander Abhinandan shot down one F-16 of PAF. As shown in radar image on the slide. The F-16 crashed and fell across the LOC. The IAF lost one MiG21 in the aerial engagement and Abhinandan ejected safely but his parachute drifted across the Line of Control, and he was taken into custody by Pakistan Army,” said the Air Vice Marshal. The Air Force said two parachutes were visually sighted, which were corroborated by radio communication intercepts. Even Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan had on camera indicated “more than one pilot”. These conclusively proved that two aircraft had gone down that day in the same area, separated by around 1 to 1.30 minutes.

Increase random checking of VVPAT slips to five per Assembly segment, SC directs Election Commission New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday increased voter verified paper audit trial (VVPAT) verification to five random Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in each Assembly segment/constituency. In case of general elections, VVPAT slips of five EVMs in each Assembly segment of a Parliamentary Constituency would be subject to physical counting. In State Assembly e l e c t i o n s , t h e V V PAT verification would extend to five random EVMs in each Assembly constituency. The Supreme Court order would be implemented in the Lok Sabha polls, scheduled to commence from April 11. A Bench led by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi increased the number of EVM-VVPATs subjected to physical verification in order to “ensure the greatest degree

of accuracy, satisfaction in election process.” “Not only political parties but the poor and the illiterate should be satisfied,” the apex court observed. Earlier, under the ECI guideline 16.6, only the VVPAT slips from one EVM in every Assembly segment/ constituency was subjected to physical verification. Now, with five such EVMs under physical scrutiny, the apex court said the election would see “fool-proof.” The Supreme Court’s decision

is a far shot from what 21 Opposition parties wanted — VVPAT verification in 50% or 125 polling booths in each constituency. The increase to five EVMs from one would only increase the VVPAT verification percentage from 0.44% to less than two per cent. The court said VVPAT verification of five EVMs, rather than in 125 polling booths, is more “viable at this point of time.” It would not be a drain on the ECI’s infrastructural resources

and manpower as the Opposition’s idea would have been. Neither would counting VVPAT slips of five EVMs take any substantial amount of time. The ECI had said that a 50% random physical verification of VVPATs would delay Lok Sabha poll results of 2019 by six whole days, quoting a March 22 report of the Indian Statistical Institute, which had said that a sample verification of 479 EVMs and VVPATs out of a total 10.35 lakh machine would lift public confidence to 99.9936%. Reacting to this, Deputy Election Commissioner Sudeep Jain had said the ECI’s sample verification for the April-May Lok Sabha polls would cover 4,125 EVMs and VVPATs. “This is 8.6 times the sample size recommended in the Indian Statistical Institute report,” ECI had said.

BJP releases election manifesto; promises Ram temple, firm hand in dealing with terror and a $5 trillion economy

New Delhi : With the aim of achieving another stint in power, the BJP on Monday made a string of promises, including expeditious construction of a Ram temple, a firm hand in dealing with terrorism and doubling farmers income in the next three years. The party also promised to make India the third largest economy globally by 2030 and scrap Article 370 that gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir if it comes back to power. Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the manifesto, titled ‘Sankalpit Bharat, Sashakt Bharat’ (Determined India, Empowered India), in the presence of party chief Amit Shah and other top leaders, including Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley. The ‘Sankalp Patra’ comes three days before the first of the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections begins (April 11). In the manifesto, the BJP also resolved to annul Article 35A of the Constitution that says no outsider can own

fast-tracked to strengthen the armed forces and it will continue with its approach of zero tolerance towards terrorism if voted to power. Security forces will continue to get a free hand to deal with terrorism, the document stated. The party said it will implement NRC (National Register of Citizens) in a phased manner in various parts of the country. About Jammu and Kashmir, the BJP said, “We reiterate our position since the time of the

Jan Sangh to the abrogation of Article 370. We are committed to annulling Article 35A of the Constitution of India as the provision is discriminatory against non-permanent residents and women of Jammu and Kashmir.” Mr. Modi wrote in the preface of the manifesto, “Let us work towards building a strong and inclusive India, whose citizens are assured of dignity, prosperity, security and opportunity.” In his writeup in the manifesto, Mr. Shah said, “In its tenure of five years, the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been able to take many decisions which are historic and has ushered in a comprehensive and fundamental transformation.” He also referred to various schemes and decisions of the government, including Swachh Bharat Mission, Ujjawala Yojana, Saubhagya Yojana, demonetisation, GST, September 2016 surgical strikes and the February last Balakot air strike.

Agartala : Stating that Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura chief NC Debbarma doesn’t have the strength to take calls against some youth leaders who are wantonly framing policies against the interest of the tribals, vicepresident Ananta Debbarma quit the party and joined the Congress on Monday. Besides Ananta, four IPFT divisional presidents and secretaries also joined the Congress. After joining the grand old party, Ananta said he was upset with the IPFT over not objecting against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB). He also alleged that NC Debbarma was sidelined in the party and

that general secretary Mevar Kumar Jamatia and Mangal would dominate the party policies. “I still respect NC Debbarma. But he doesn’t have the strength to speak up. Jamatia doesn’t even interact with me. He went to Delhi when IPFT had called for a Tripura bandh against the CAB. The strike had to be revoked. I was the only one protesting against various issues during party meetings,” he said.

On the economic front, the BJP said it aspired to make India the third largest economy of the world by 2030. “This implies that we commit to make India a USD 5 trillion economy by 2025 and USD 10 trillion economy by 2032,” it said. The party promised that it will continue with the simplification of the GST process by engaging in dialogue with all stakeholders. The party said purchase of defence equipment will be

The government made the selection following a merit-based approach and did not go with the tradition of appointing the seniormost eligible officer to the

Vice Admiral Verma has approached an armed forces tribunal in the national capital to know why the

His petition is likely to be taken up Tuesday, they saidBesides Verma, the other contenders for the Navy Chief post included Vice Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral G Ashok Kumar, FOC-in-C of Western Naval Command Vice Admiral Ajit Kumar and FOC-in-C of Southern Naval Command Vice Admiral Anil Kumar Chawla, the source said. London : The U.K. High Court on Monday rejected fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya’s plea to appeal against his extradition to India. In February, the U.K.’s Home Office said the government signed an order to extradite Mr. Mallya to face charges of fraud and money laundering following the judgment handed down by Westminster Magistrates Court Chief Magistrate Emma Arbuthnot in December 2018. Subsequently, Mr. Mallya filed an application in the High Court, seeking

permission to appeal against the extradition. However, a judge at London’s High Court rejected Mr. Mallya’s application for permission to appeal against the extradition order, which was passed on April 5 by Justice William Davis. Mr. Mallya launched his application to appeal to the High Court after Home Secretary Sajid Javid signed the extradition order in early February. It is, however, not necessarily the end of the story. This application to appeal was made on paper — via the exchange of documents

between the judge and both sides. Now Mr. Mallya’s legal team can make a renewal application for a brief oral hearing before the same court (but not before the judge), in another attempt to push for an appeal hearing. If it were to be rejected at this stage, there would be no further recourse in terms of the appeal process. “The appellant has five business days to apply for oral consideration,” a spokesperson for the judiciary explained. “If a renewal application is made, it will be listed before a High Court judge and dealt with at a hearing.”

Young voters and their key position in national polls The country is facing an avalanche of electoral promises. Most promises are focused on luring young voters. But to what extent can these promises be fulfilled? This question can’t be answered now, but if young voters are the focus of the electoral discourse, this should be considered as an auspicious sign. This was bound to happen. In the past few elections, clearly the voters exercising their franchisee for the first or second time have been holding a decisive position. All available data confirms this. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections there were about 100 million new voters. Of this, nearly 25 million were under 20 years of age and had acquired the right to vote for the first time. In the previous elections, among 815 million registered voters, 52% were below 40 years. Needless to say, that this section of our society shoulders the responsibility of building the future of our country. This segment needs the right guidance and support. Look at the data. The crumbling education system has made the foundation for building character and personality very weak and decrepit. Talks and efforts for social reforms are now limited to professional NGOs. It’s clear that the ‘light houses’ for guiding the youth are now no longer there. Now is the era of social media, and the information that flows through it, has utterly ruined all respect for knowledge in our society. Every day, ridiculous things are said about a leader, a historical personality or the Indian culture. The air is already deadly with the toxicity of all the ideological dirt. According to Hong Kong-based Counterpoint Research, India has 430 million smartphone users. Through these smartphones, they access WhatsApp. WhatsApp claims that 200 million people in India actively use the messenger service. There are 87,000 active users groups, which keep circulating various kinds of messages. This is the best medium for the electoral warriors to reach out to, and convey their opinion to the masses. This is how we continue to get a wide variety of audio, video and written messages all through the day and night. These messages contain the details of someone’s character or the evil deeds of someone else. Indians are typically happy to consume a piece of information, which comes free of cost. But this delight is now proving to be costly, as our young generation is being brainwashed into accepting half-truths or complete lies. But how pervasive is this menace? Sample this: This time, 900 million voters have been registered. The number of first-time young voters, between 18 and 20 years, stands at 15 million. Most of these firsttime voters are from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Rajasthan and Maharashtra. There are a combined 235 Lok Sabha seats in these five states. That means these states will play a significant role in the formation of the new government at the centre, because 43% of the Lok Sabha members will be elected from these states. The situation on the ground in these states is pathetic. Farmers have been committing suicide, women are not safe, a large number of the unemployed youth also belong to these states. Whether it is social inequality or the feudal mentality, the ill-effects are seen in these areas. Observe the paradox, most of the country’s prime ministers have come from these states. Yet, they are in such a pathetic condition. Why is it so? If we start looking for an answer, we will have to write many such articles, but the truth is that the youth of these states will play a decisive role in electing the new government. This section will also have the maximum expectations from the government. They are dissatisfied with their condition, and will cast their vote with the hope that their problems will be resolved - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara over the next five years. Editor

Shah Rukh Khan in Don 3? Happy Birthday Allu Arjun

Buzz has it that Shah Rukh Khan has opted out of Farhan Akhtar’s Don 3, and the makers are keen on roping in Ranveer Singh for the film.

Mumbai : 28 years after the iconic film Don, Farhan Akhtar and Shah Rukh Khan joined hands for a remake in 2006. If the Amitabh Bachchan-starrer original has attained a cult status, the remake, too, gained the love and appreciation of millennials. Such was the craze that Akhtar had to turn his Don into a franchise. After the success of two instalments, Don 3 has been in the pipeline for long. But latest buzz suggests that Shah Rukh Khan will not play the titular role in the

franchise anymore. Shah Rukh Khan is not a part of Don 3 anymore and that the actor has opted out of the film for personal reasons. The report further suggests that the makers are now keen on roping in Ranveer Singh for the film. After the success of Padmaavat, Simmba and Gully Boy, Ranveer Singh has become the current favourite with filmmakers. He has not only displayed his versatility, but has also proven to be a bankable actor. However, there has been no official confirmation

yet of the Gully Boy actor joining the star cast. Earlier, producer Ritesh Sidhwani said that they have started working on the script of Don 3. “We are still working on it and don’t know when it will happen. It’s a keenly awaited franchise and we can’t disappoint the fans,” the producer said earlier. After the debacle that was his 2018 film Zero, Shah Rukh Khan has apparently not signed any other film. And the 53-year-old actor is taking his time to give a nod to any script.

A new picture of Shah Rukh Khan’s daughter Suhana, who is pursuing her education in London, has gone viral.

Mumbai : A new picture of actor Shah Rukh Khan’s daughter Suhana has gone viral on social media. In the picture, Suhana is seen with a big smile on her face, showing off her glamourous look. The star kid, who shuttles between London and Mumbai, can be seen wearing a white top and a pair of black jeans. Suhana has been pursuing her higher studies in London. She also often visits her home in Mumbai and is spotted with her best friends, Ananya Panday (daughter of actor Chunky Panday who will soon to make her Bollywood debut with Karan Johar’s Student of the Year 2) and actor Sanjay Kapoor’s daughter Shanaya. Just recently, Suhana and Ananya were snapped outside Shanaya’s residence, in a car, and laughing their hearts out.

In early March, a video of Suhana went viral. It showed her dancing with her pals to a song by Kenny Loggins called Footloose . In the past too, her father Shah Rukh has shared pictures from the school and college plays that she has been part of. While a bunch of next generation of star kids are set of Bollywood debut, Shah Rukh has made it clear that both his kids will get into films only after finishing their education. While Suhana is in London,

her older brother Aryan is the US for studies. Shah Rukh’s wife Gauri Khan, too, shares pictures of her kids. Suhana made her magazine cover debut last year with Vogue India. While the star kid looked a natural before the camera, the shoot itself drew sharp reaction on Twitter. People questioned the fairness of having her on the magazine’s cover, without achieving anything yet. The magazine and Shah Rukh were accused of promoting nepotism.

New Delhi : The magic word at the box office this weekend was “Shazam!” Warner Bros.’ latest DC superhero adventure easily topped charts in North America, pocketing $53 million when it debuted in 4,217 venues. Buoyed by positive reviews, “Shazam!” arrived ahead of expectations, which anticipated a start around $40 million to $45 million. The film, made by Warner Bros.’ New Line division, also earned $3 million in advanced screenings, bringing its domestic haul to $56 million. Overseas, “Shazam!” dominated with $102 million from 79 international markets for a global start to $158.6 million. While “Shazam!’s” domestic opening weekend is on the lower side for a traditional comic-book movie, it was significantly less expensive to make compared to other films in the genre that are heavy on special effects. That means “Shazam!” doesn’t

have to reach the same box office heights as other DC Comic entries like “Aquaman” and “Wonder Woman” to turn a profit. Warner Bros. and New Line spent $98 million to produce “Shazam!,” proving that studios can crank out a solid superhero installment without breaking the bank. Prior DC films like “Justice League” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” on the other hand, cost upward of $300 million before taking marketing and distribution into count. Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution, said this weekend’s “thrilling result” was because “Shazam!” doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Bengaluru : Royal Challengers Bangalore have had a disastrous campaign in the 2019 Indian Premier League. They have now lost all their six matches this season

Business Bidding for Jet Airways starts, SBI invites interest

New Delhi : The State Bank of India (SBI) today invited bids for stake sale in struggling carrier Jet Airways. SBI, which is the lead lender of a consortium of domestic lenders that has extended loans to Jet Airways, is looking for “change in control and management” of the carrier, according to a public notice. SBI Capital Markets would be assisting and advising the lenders in the bidding process. The SBI-led consortium of 26 lenders now has the management control of the full-service carrier under a debt-recast plan. SBI is the lead lender to Jet Airways, which has a debt burden of 8,000 crore. In a notice on its website, SBI Capital Markets, a unit of SBI, said that prospective

bidders are required to submit expressions of interest for up to 75% stake in debt-laden Jet by 6 pm on April 10. The lenders’ consortium has taken control of the airline under the debt resolution plan approved by the Jet Airways’ board on March 25 and are set to infuse 1,500 crore. Besides, the carrier’s founder and promoter Naresh Goyal as well as his wife Anita Goyal has quit the board. The shareholding of Goyals has come down to 25% from 51% earlier. Acute financial

crunch has forced the airline to ground aircraft, cancel flights and delay payment of salaries, including to pilots. Last week, the lenders said they would pursue resolution plan for the carrier in a timebound manner under the present legal and regulatory framework. “The lenders are cognisant that the outcome of efforts of the lenders will depend on the interest shown by the parties on sale of stake in the company,” the statement issued by lenders had said.

are also likely to be invited. Even as BCCI has struggled to frame a fullfledged league similar to the Women’s Big Bash League or the Kia Super League, they have wanted to move away from the concept of having an exhibition game and hold a small tournament instead. The decision to come up with the tournament has taken almost four months of

planning. As a result, the announcement is expected to come sooner than it did last year, when only the fans who had bought tickets for IPL 11’s Qualifier 1 were allowed entry into the stadium, resulting in a poor turnout. The situation is expected to be only slightly better this time around as the weather for a 4 pm game may not be the most conducive for spectators.

Here in CSK it’s more chilled out, you are expected to win, but it’s not a matter of life and death here,” the seasoned campaigner said. Authorities at the Kamla Nehru Zoological Garden at Kankaria Lakefront have taken precautions to prevent the animals from heatstroke. Dr R K Sahu, superintendent of the zoo, said that they have provided 35 coolers to different cages to provide some respite to the birds and animals. “Almost every enclosure has also been provided with nursery green nets that brings down temperature by almost 8 degrees,” he said. Dr Sahu added that the young ones and older animals need special care during summer months. “We keep a close watch

Metropolitan Magistrate S K Gadhvi today issued the summons asking them to appear before it on May 27, the next date of hearing. The court had earlier examined the witnesses and today it observed that prima facie it appears to be a case of defamation. The court had earlier on August 27 last year ordered an inquiry under section 202 of the CrPC in the matter before proceeding further on the complaint lodged in the court by ADC bank chairman Ajay Patel on the same day. Patel with his complaint had also attached the copy of a CD and transcripts of the

With 17 candidates including Shah remaining in fray, 2 balloting units in each EVM will be used on Gandhinagar LS seat Gandhinagar : On the most high-profile LS seat in Gujarat, Gandhinagar where BJP president Amit Shah is contesting as party candidate, a total of five candidates including Congress leader and former PAAS convener Hardik Patel’s aide Dilip Sabwa withdrew nominations on the last date of doing so. According to official information from the returning officer’s office, now a total of 17 candidates are in fray on this prestigious seat which has earlier been represented six times by veteran BJP leader L K Advani and once by former PM Late A B Vajpayee. Among the candidates apart from Shah and C J Chavda of Congress who is current MLA of Gandhinagar North Assembly seat, BSP’ Jayendra Rathod was also in the fray. Seven others were from less known registered political parties and as many independent. A witness of the sensational

seat, and Bharatsinh Solanki, 65, the candidate from Anand seat, hang in the balance, and the outcome of the April 23 elections could very well decide their political future. This is true more in the case of Chaudhary who has seen his political stock dwindling in the past few years. Chaudhary, 53, will take on current MP and BJP candidate Prabhu Vasava, from the tribal reserved seat in Surat district. Solanki, on the other hand, will face-off against BJP candidate Mitesh Patel from Anand seat in central Gujarat. Initial reports suggest a tough battle awaits Chaudhary, while Solanki has

Jitu Chaudhari have been winning in election after election in spite of the inroads BJP has made in the tribal community,” said a Congress leader, requesting anonymity. A party leader from Surat said that Chaudhary using

his influence to get tickets for family members, instead of promoting his supporters, had alienated him from the party’s workers. “Tusharbhai realises the importance of the coming election, and is reaching out to leaders and workers who are unhappy with him. He can win only if he manages to get their support, and to prevent political oblivion for himself,” he said. Chaudhary said that he was getting good response during campaigning, and was confident of a victory, but declined to comment when asked what impact an adverse result could have on his political career. As

far as Solanki is concerned, he still has a strong say in the party’s affairs in Gujarat – his cousin Amit Chavda replaced him as the state Congress president when he stepped down last year - but a loss in the elections would be seen as a body blow to him. “Anand is one seat which the Congress expects to win, and it is critical for Bharatsinh to deliver. A loss will certainly erode his stock,” said a senior leader, pointing out that party president Rahul Gandhi had made it clear that only those who can win and make the Congress win will have a say in how the party is run.

New Freshwater Shrimp Species Discovered in Gujarat, Named After Kutch Region

Ahmedabad : Much to the delight of biologists from across the globe, a new freshwater shrimp species of genus Caridina has been discovered by researchers from Gujarat’s Kutch district, and scientists have named it ‘Caridina Kutchi’, after the region itself. “The new species has been found from Khari River of semi-arid region of Kutch peninsula in Gujarat and is identified to be new to the science. We have named the new species as Caridina Kutchi,” says professor Pranav Pandya, who works in the field of marine biology and has co-

authored the paper on the discovery. The paper on this discovery has been authored by Pandya and Dr Jasmine Richard of Invertebrates Division, Department of Life Sciences, the Natural History Museum, London, England. It was recently published in the international scientific journal, Zootaxa. “Caridina Kutchi species is the first Caridina species to be described from Kutch, which is known for its complex geological set up. The species belongs to genus Caridina which are seen in aquatic water bodies and are very less studied in the western India,” professor

Pandya said. “This species serves as ecological filters of water bodies. We were working on this species since a year because of some of its distinct features. As it was a different species, we worked on it. Dr. Jasmine Richard, the co-author of the paper on this species, helped a lot and validated it to be a new species,’’ Pandya said about the discovery. “We have been working on the species since a year and once it was established that this was a new discovery, we decided to name it after the Kutch region, an ecologically diverse area,” said Pandya. Pandya is presently working on a research project sanctioned by the Government of India on the intertidal animals of Gulf of Kutch. “This discovery will help encourage scientists to work on this species’ status and distribution in India,’’ he said.

statements, tweets etc of the accused. Notably in June last year Surjewala had during a press conference alleged that ADC bank received the highest amount of old demonetized notes, worth Rs 745.58 crore, in just five days after the note ban was announced on November 8, 2016 by PM Modi. It was the only one of the 370 district cooperative banks across the country to receive such

a large sum of demonetized notes in five days. “ADCB chairman Ajay Patel is a prominent BJP leader, a close associate of Amit Shah. Five days after demonetization, all cooperative banks were banned from accepting demonetized notes with the pretence of preventing money laundering through them,’ Surjewala had said. He had also alleged that in 11 district cooperative banks in Gujarat headed by BJP leaders, including those in Ahmedabad and Rajkot, Rs 3,118.51 crore worth of old notes were deposited within five days of demonetization. Congress president Rahul

Gandhi had also taken a jibe at BJP and Shah with his tweet on June 22. “Congratulations Amit Shah ji , Director, Ahmedabad Dist. Cooperative Bank, on your bank winning 1st prize in the conversion of old notes to new race. 750 Cr in 5 days! Millions of Indians whose lives were destroyed by demonetisation, salute your achievement,” Rahul had tweeted. Patel in his complaint has alleged that the false accusation by Congress leaders had affected the image of the bank and they were liable to action under defamation laws.

The biologists had been working on this shrimp species since a year because of its distinct features.
