AG. GNS_New Delhi : India’s benchmark Sensex experienced its biggest fall this year, and the biggest fall in a decade in a session after the Union Budget, as it crashed nearly 800 points on Monday amid disappointment over the lack of measures to immediately revive economic growth, and fears that the higher tax on the super-rich would extend to investment vehicles through which some foreign investors channel their investments

into India. A heavy global sell-off was also responsible for the fall, which saw the erosion of around ~3.4 lakh crore of wealth. Extending its losses for the second day, the Sensex plummeted 907 points in intraday trade before closing at 38,720.57 points, a loss of 792.82 points or 2.01%. The Nifty of the National Stock Exchange fell 252.55 points, or 2.14%, to settle at 11,558.6 points. The indices posted their lowest close in seven weeks. Both the Sensex and the

Nifty fell nearly 1% on Friday after finance minister N i r m a l a S i t h a r a m a n ’s budget speech. While a senior finance ministry official, who asked not to be named, said on Monday afternoon the government may issue a clarification on the applicability of the increased surcharge on foreign portfolio investors (FPIs), Sitharaman later said there was no such need at this point in time.

Gujarat: Journalist, his family attacked by former sarpanch for critical report on govt project According to the victim, the accused took offence of a story he had done a few days back for his newspaper regarding the "inefficient" work carried out in the beautification drive of a pond in Bhagdawada AG. GNS_Ahmedabad: Odisha has set a precedent for other states in the countrBureau chief of a Gujarat Daily in Valsad was assaulted, along with his wife and one and a half-year-old daughter by a former sarpanch on Saturday night, days after the journalist’s report, critical of the government project undertaken by accused, was published in the newspaper. According to police, 34-year-old Harshad Ahir, a native of Bhagdawada in Valsad, who is the city bureau chief of Gujarat

Mitra – a daily newspaper, was assaulted along with his wife Ketna (30) and the girl child, by a group of three men on Saturday night. The family stays in an apartment in the city area of Valsad, which technically falls under Bhagdawada village panchayat. The prime accused has been identified as Dharmesh Patel, former sarpanch of Bhagdawada village along with his alleged accomplices Jaydev Desai and Sagar Patel. According to the victim, the accused took offence of a

story he had done a few days back for his newspaper regarding the “inefficient” work carried out in the beautification drive of a pond in Bhagdawada. “Almost five years ago, a beautification drive was carried out at a pond in Bahagdawada where a wall was erected on one side of the pond, chairs and sitting lawn was made along with other items. Dharmesh was the deputy sarpanch back then and he had undertaken the project work. He has also been the sarpanch of the village.

However, in the recent rainfall, almost all the beautification was badly damaged so I did a story highlighting the inefficient work. On Saturday night around 10.15 pm, five men including Dharmesh assembled in front of the apartment and asked me to come downstairs. When I refused, two men remained downstairs and Dharmesh along with his two accomplices climbed to the third floor, broke into my house and assaulted me and my wife. They also kicked my infant daughter,” said Harshad.

As the Opposition struggles, the BJP leverages its win It has just been six weeks since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stormed to power for a second time. It would have been understandable if the party, flush with victory, decided to step back. Leaders and the cadre could have easily slid into complacency, enjoying the privileges of power and rested easy till the next round of the elections. It was the Opposition which, one assumed, would be driven to action — introspecting, understanding reasons for their failure, going back to the ground, strengthening their organisation, reaching out to social groups and individuals, and selecting new leaders. What is happening in Indian politics is, however, just the reverse. On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off a fresh membership drive for the BJP in Varanasi. In 2014, soon after Amit Shah took over as the party president, the BJP embarked on a similar exercise. What could have just turned out to be a customary process ended up as a mega campaign. That led to the formal enrolment in the party hitting close to 100 million members — prompting Mr Shah to claim that the BJP was the world’s largest party. Many doubted the veracity of the figure, but there was little doubt that the campaign kept the party machine active, swelled its ranks, and gave it access to formidable data — mobile numbers, addresses, and demographic profile of its entire structure. This data was then used for the various campaigns the party did over the past five years and in elections. After the 2019 victory, the party has started another similar drive. The moment is ripe, for given, Mr Modi’s popularity and the sheer dominance it enjoys in Indian politics at the moment, many are sure to gravitate towards the party. This will then be followed by a process of internal elections. The BJP’s claims of democracy here however can be questioned — most office bearers from the national level to the district level are selected by consensus rather than internal polls. But nonetheless, this will create a pool of new leaders, generate political opportunities - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara for many, and culminate. Editor

Budget blues, US job data tank market 793 points, worst loss in single day this year New Delhi: The stock markets took a heavy beating Monday with the benchmark BSE Sensex plummeting 793 points, or two per cent, its biggest single-day loss in 2019 so far, as a combination of Union Budget proposals and a global selloff triggered a selling spree. While the fall in benchmark indices was broadly in line with other Asian peers, which slid on strong US jobs data, the central government’s move to tax share buybacks, raise tax on the super rich and hike minimum public shareholding in listed companies further disappointed domestic investors. The Sensex plunged 907 points in the intra-day trade before closing at 38,720.57 points with a loss of 792.82 points, taking the total loss to 1,188 points after the Budget presentation.
