The death toll from the Uttarakhand glacier disaster rose to 31 with five more bodies being recovered, officials said on Tuesday as multiple agencies raced against time to reach about 30 workers trapped inside a tunnel in a power project site and 175 people remained missing. Two of the bodies were recovered from the debris in Raini village, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) officials said, two days after a portion of the Nanda Devi glacier possibly burst its banks and triggered an avalanche and floods in the Alaknanda river system. The State Emergency Operation Centre said five bodies were found in the morning, taking the death toll to 31, and estimated that 175 people are still missing. With the hours

ticking by inexorably, fears escalated about those missing since the disaster struck on Sunday morning, according to officials who stepped up efforts to locate survivors. The missing people include those working at NTPC’s 480 MW TapovanVishnugad project and the 13.2 MW Rishiganga Hydel Project and villagers whose homes nearby were washed

away.Teams of the Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) coordinated efforts to rescue about 30 people who were working in a tunnel at the Tapovan-Vishnugad project when the waters came rushing in.The workers have been trapped in the 12-ft-high and

about 2.5-km-long ‘head race tunnel’ (HRT). “Clearing of debris and slush continued the whole night. About 120 metres of the tunnel entrance stretch is now clear,” ITBP spokesperson Vivek Kumar Pandey said in Delhi. “The height of the accumulated slush has reduced more. ITBP personnel are waiting to enter as soon as any movement deep inside the tunnel is possible,” he said. A senior official added that the rescuers have not been able to make any contact with those stuck inside but are hopeful for “signs of life”. Relief is also being distributed by helicopters among villagers cut off due to the washing away of a bridge in the avalanche at Malari. About 100 ration kits have been distributed in the affected areas of 13 villages with a total population of around 2,500, officials said.

India’s small farmer finds a champion

Words carry the power to shape the future. Not many statesmen can speak in a manner as powerful as Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi. His response to the debate on motion of thanks on the President’s address pressed all the right buttons with people at this critical hour.Replete with hard facts, and with a sprinkle of humour and wit, his speech addressed apprehensions related to crucial issues such as the farm laws. His message to the nation was clear — this is India’s moment under the sun and we must seize every opportunity for growth that lies ahead of us. It is time to reenergise our inherent capabilities and rebuild our nation. It would be a colossal mistake to lose sight of the big vision for India, and so, our differences should not come in the way of this vision. The most important aspect of the PM’s speech was the elaborate explanation of the government’s aim to empower small and marginal farmers through the three farm laws. In all discussions with regard to agriculture in India, this section is often forgotten. It is a well-known fact that, after all these years, the Green Revolution’s gains have not trickled down to this section. India’s small farmer has neither the ability to organise, nor the time to devote himself to political pursuits. Thankfully, India’s small farmer has got a powerful spokesperson in the form of the PM. That India’s agriculture is riddled with many challenges is not hidden from anyone. Land holdings are shrinking, agri-technology is becoming obsolete, and farmers face exploitation at the hands of middlemen. To free the small farmer from these shackles, the government has combined an innovative approach with zero tolerance towards malpractices. PM Modi referred to modernising the long-standing mandis, while also complimenting efforts by various states towards improving agriculture systems. The unequivocal message — minimum support price (MSP) was there, is there and will remain — should answer all those who have spread canards about MSP. After all, it is this government that has increased MSP to 1.5 times the cost of cultivation. Other initiatives, be it neem-coated urea or the modified crop insurance scheme, have touched the lives of small farmers the most. At the bedrock of good governance is listening and accommodating divergent views. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government has always shown utmost empathy and sensitivity towards the issues of the poor and the marginalised. This is why it initiated an unprecedented 11 rounds of talks with the farmers. At a time when egos and oneupmanship are rampant, it takes a big heart to offer to put the laws on hold for 18 months until all the issues are addressed. PM Modi is a leader who understands the pain of the farmers, and every step taken under his leadership will, undoubtedly, be in line with their best interests. To elaborate, as the PM underlined, there is a need to widen the ambit of what we see as “improvements” in agriculture. At the base of it, if infrastructure, including roads, rail and air connectivity improves, farmers will be able to gain access to distant and diverse markets. The government’s focus on allied sectors such as dairy and fisheries is aimed at generating additional revenue for the farmers, and giving them opportunities to showcase their innovations. Similarly, the PM’s vision for water in every household too has its gains for the farmers. millions of small farmers need our attention. They are talented and hardworking. They do not need doles to keep them poor. They need support to enable them to rise and contribute to the welfare of India. No less a leader than the PM speaking about them is noteworthy. He addressed every critical issue with farsightedness. At no point were those protesting called names. He highlighted the monumental contribution of the Sikh community to national development. He appreciated (rightfully) the pioneering contribution of HD Deve Gowda towards the cause of farmers. He referred to Sharad Pawar and appreciated Ghulam Nabi Azad. These are things to learn — - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara we may all be on different sides.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the polls due in March-April, Owaisi visited Furfura Sharif on January 3 and held talks with Siddiqui for two hours. Siddiqui, who has accused the TMC of not doing enough for

the minority community and using it as a vote bank instead, launched the Indian Secular Front (ISF) on January 21 and offered the Congress and the Left parties to become its ally and share seats to safeguard “the interest of Muslims, tribal people and backward communities”. This triggered sharp reactions. Accused by the TMC, Congress and the Left parties of helping the

and Hanumangarh districts in north Rajasthan border the state of Punjab ,where the agitation by farmers is the most vehement. Nagaur is seen as the hub of farmers’ politics with a large presence of the Jat community. According to state Congress president Govind Singh Dotasara, the tractor rally will be 60 km long, starting from Kisahngarh and ending in Makrana. Gandhi will join the rally en route. This is Gandhi’s first visit to the state since the political crisis last year when former deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot revolted against the state leadership and almost toppled the government of chief minister Ashok Gehlot.

Gandhi’s meeting is also being seen as yet another attempt to end the cold war between Pilot and Gehlot and try to forge a semblance of unity in the divided party. Since after the political crisis, Gehlot and Pilot have maintained a distance. Pilot, who was stripped of his post of deputy prime minister and state Congress chief, has been undertaking visits to different parts of the state in a bid to keep his base among party workers and the public intact. Gandhi’s visit will be keenly observed by leaders and political analysts to see who all will share space with the leader during his visit and if Pilot is also accommodated along with Gehlot.

There are 9,118 women currently serving the army, navy and air force, with the services giving them more opportunities to boost career progression, the government told Parliament on Monday. The headcount of women officers in the armed forces hovered around 3,000 in 2014-15.Since then, the government has taken a raft of measures to empower

and the navy 704 women officers. In percentage terms, women still form a small part of the military—0.56% of the army, 1.08% of the air force and 6.5% of the navy. There has been an increase in the number of women personnel in the armed forces (excluding medical, dental and nursing

cadres) in 2020 compared to the previous year, minister of state for defence Shripad Naik told Rajya Sabha. He added that the government has sanctioned 1,700 posts for women in Corps of Military Police (CMP) in the nonofficer cadre. The CMP is the first cadre to induct women in the non-officer rank. One of the turning points for women in the military came in 2015 when the IAF decided to induct them into the fighter stream. The navy has also opened more avenues for women in recent years— the first naval women were inducted as pilots of maritime reconnaissance aircraft in 2016 Warships.
