Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman has accused the previous Congress regime of bleeding the state-owned telecom company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to “death almost”, while adding that the BJP-led NDA government is giving money to the company to buy 4G spectrum and become competitive. She was responding to allegations of Shiv Sena member Arvind Sawant in Lok Sabha on Tuesday that the government was killing stateowned BSNL and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), while at the same time it was helping private sector players like Vodafone. “BSNL is a part of our strategic asset... we are giving (the company) money

to buy 4G spectrum and become competitive,” she said while intervening during a discussion on general budget in the lower house. BSNL, she said “lost full ten years” because of the treatment meted out to it by the previous Congress government. “There was 2G exploitation because of which BSNL lost out... you (Congress) allowed all kinds of corruption in 2G”, she added. When the NDA government came to power in 2014, BSNL was in a bad shape and did not have money to pay salaries, she said, adding that the NDA government provided funds so that the company could come out with a voluntary.

The Nation Needs A Strong Congress And Unity Of Opposition Parties

India is missing an effective Opposition at the Centre and States as it tries to check thesurge of the ruling BJP. Political equation often changes before the poll as the enemiesbecome friends and friends become enemies. The BSP and Congress came together in1996. The S.P. and the BSP came together in the early nineties, and the Congress and theS.P. joined hands in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls. When the situation requires opposition parties, do not mind combining to check the rulingparty as multi-cornered contests only give the ruling party a chance for victory as the votesare splintered. If the Opposition is to survive, it must rebuild itself from the states upward. The current fivestate Assembly polls are crucial in this regard. Putting up a joint candidate against the BJPor tactical understanding within the Opposition parties would have had more victory. It doesnot mean that the entire Opposition should come together, but a broad coalition would havegone a long way. There are many reasons for the disunity among the opposition parties. Congress has failedto lead the Opposition as a pan-national party since 2014. The party continues to live in itspast glory while the regional satraps feel they are much more effective in opposing the BJPin their respective states. The challenge before the Opposition is how to defeat the BJP. Although the 2024 Lok Sabhaelections are two years away, the BJP has already started making moves. These five stateAssembly polls are crucial because they will indicate the direction for the future. The BJPwants to retain U.P at all costs. As the Congress weakens, India misses a strong, crediblenational opposition inside and outside Parliament. While individually, each opposition party talks about the need for unity, they seem to bemore at war within their respective parties rather than taking on the ruling party. Many leaders like Mamata Banerjee, Arvind Kejriwal, Yogi Adityanath are ambitious andnurture prime ministerial ambitions. But what is crucial is who or which party dominatesIndia Opposition in the future. Unfortunately for Congress, the party is now a junior partnerin a coalition while regional parties play a significant role in their respective states. That iswhere the competition lies. There is war within Congress. The party faces factionalism and indiscipline. There is erosionand infighting in U.P. and Punjab as senior leaders from ;Team Rahul; like Jitin Prasada andRPN Singh have left for BJP. To humor Cricketer Navjot Sidhu, the Gandhi siblings sackedchief minister Captain Amarinder Singh to placate Navjot Singh Sidhu but the inner partyconflicts still remain. Sidhu is not reconciled that he has not been projected as the potentialCM.Even after emerging as the single largest party in Goa and Manipur, the BJP outwittedCongress and formed the government after 2017 assembly elections.Congress and BSP fight for the same groups. In UP, it is the Dalit and Brahmin votes. AAPand SAD are principal opponents of Congress in Punjab. AIMIM and Congress compete forthe minority vote in Telangana. The Congress and Aam Admi Party are rivals in U.P, Punjab, and Goa.Congress has spurned the offer of NCP and Shiv Sena, (its Maharashtra coalition partners) to form a front in Goa. Mamata Banerjee never misses a chance to make snide remarksagainst Congress. So does Mayawati, but she attacks both the S.P. and the Congress inU.P.Then there are ego clashes among the regional chieftains. The regional satraps are not keento work under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi. The Opposition needs a new narrative and effective strategy to win. While the BJP hascornered the committed Hindu vote, there are floating Hindu votes. It cannot succeed withoutthe support of a section of Hindus. Rahul Gandhi perhaps realizes this, which is why he hasbeen talking of a difference between Hindutva and Hinduism. With a proper strategy and strong leadership, the Congress could regain its lost glory. Forinstance, in 180 seats of 542 in Lok Sabha, the fight is direct between Congress and theBJP. There are over 350 seats where the regional parties are dominant, including states likeUttar Pradesh (80), Maharashtra (48), West Bengal (42), Bihar (40), Tamil Nadu (39),Andhra Pradesh (25), Odisha (21) and Telangana (17).Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a secret weapon. The weak Congress party and disunitedOpposition keep the BJP in power. So part of the solution is within the hands of theopposition. Instead of fighting among themselves, the opposition needs to unite to fight BJPeffectively. - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara A disunited opposition.

SPORTS - BUSINESS Coppa Italia: Inter Milan New Zealand-Australia beat Roma 2-0, ruin Mour- T20I series cancelled inho’s return to San Siro Agency News: New Delhi A pair of brilliant goals from Edin Dzeko and Alexis Sanchez ruined Jose Mourinho’s return to his former club as Inter Milan beat Roma 2-0 to reach the Italian Cup semifinals. The match marked the first time Mourinho faced Inter at San Siro since he left after leading the club to the Serie A-Italian Cup-Champions League treble in 2010. Mourinho received a warm welcome from the fans, who deployed a banner that read: “Welcome back home, Jose.” Roma players did not receive the same friendly treatment. Inter got off a perfect

start to open the scoring on its first move. Facing his former team, Dzeko connected with a cross from the edge of the box from Ivan Perisic and beat Roma goalkeeper Rui Patricio with a right-footed volley after only two minutes. Roma’s sluggish defense looked more solid as the game progressed, but Mourinho’s team was too clumsy up front and failed to convert its rare occasions against the Serie A leader. Sanchez doubled Inter’s lead in the 68th minute with a superb long-range strike into the top left corner that Patricio could not touch and left Mourinho ruminating.

New Zealand’s three-match Twenty20 international cricket series next month against world champion Australia has been cancelled because of COVID-19 border regulations. Australia beat New Zealand by eight wickets in the final of the T20 World Cup last November and the rivals were expected to play in Napier from March 1720, in anticipation of a planned relaxation of border protocols. But the arrival of the omicron variant in New Zealand has put back the re-opening of the international border and the series cannot take place because

the Australian men’s team does not have places reserved in managed isolation.“At the time we scheduled the visit there was a lot of hope that the transTasman border would be open for those who met the right criteria,” New Zealand Cricket chief executive David White said in a statement Wednesday. However, the advent of omicron has, unfortunately, changed everything at the border and has made it impossible for us to continue with the series.“It’s disappointing but we know it’s the same for businesses and individuals and other sports and we’re grateful for the international schedule.
