It’s BJP in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, f e i r B s w Ne Kumar Goa, Manipur; Congress back in Punjab Bangarappa joins BJP ?

Agency | Bengaluru Former Karnataka chief minister late S Bangarappa’s son Kumar Bangarappa, who recently quit the Congress, joined the BJP today. Kumar Bangarappa, a former state minister, had quit Congress citing the suffocating atmosphere in the party and pressure from party workers and is returning to BJP after a 13-year gap. BJP State unit President B S Yeddyurappa welcomed him, saying it would help strengthen the party.

Exit polls 2017: Uttar Pradesh is likely to see a BJP government as most of the surveys projected it as the single largest party in the state. The BJP is likely to retain Goa and secure victory in Uttarakhand and Manipur. However, in Punjab Congress is expected to return to power

Exit poll results 2017 Agency | New Delhi Demonetisation seems to have not stopped the Modi wave as the BJP is expected to win in four out of five states that went to polls recently, according to exit poll by various media houses. The surveys predicted BJP’s win in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Manipur and Uttarakhand, while Congress is expected to stage a comeback in Punjab. Today’s Chanakya which got its prediction right after the 2014 Lok Sabha

elections and subsequent Assembly polls, has given 285 seats to the BJP, 88 seats to the Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance and just 27 seats to Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party. The India Today Axis exit poll predicted 185 seats, little short of the majority, for BJP in Uttar Pradesh followed by Samajwadi party-Congress alliance at 120 seats and BSP at 90 seats. As per India TV, the saffron party is expected to win 155 to 167 seats in Uttar

gain much from the new friendship. Akhilesh was involved in a fierce battle with the BJP during the campaigning for the 403seat state assembly. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also trained his guns on the SP-Congress alliance. If at all he decides to ally with the BSP in case he does not get a majority, it wall mark a departure from the acrimonious past the two parties have shared in the past.

Better to ally with Mayawati than to see President Rule in Uttar Pradesh Agency | New Delhi

Confident of Samajwadi Party’s win in Uttar Pradesh, chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday said that nobody wants President Rule in the state. On being asked if his party is ready to form an alliance with the BSP, in case it doesn’t get majority, Yadav told BBC that it is better to join hand with Mayawati than to see the state under President Rule. UP exit polls: BJP maybe single-largest party in elections It is often said that the road to power in New Delhi goes via Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh’s capital. Even Narendra Modi had to contest from this state (Varanasi) to mount a successful prime ministerial bid in 2014. Except for three former prime ministers who were members of the Rajya Sabha during their tenures in India’s most coveted political office, only two others—Morarji Desai (1977-79) and P.V. Narasimha Rao (1991-96)— have been elected to the Lok Sabha from a state other than Uttar Pradesh. The BJP could emerge as the single-largest party in Uttar Pradesh and get within striking distance of the majority mark in what is seen to be a hung assembly, exit polls said on Thursday. Two exit polls gave the BJP a clear advantage over its nearest rival, the Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance, while two others predicted a close fight between the two formations. The Bahujan Samaj Party was seen as a distant third in all four exit polls available. The marathon seven-phase election in India’s most-populous state was billed as a virtual semifinal to the general elections in two years. Results for the 403-member assembly are out on March 11. The halfway mark is 202. Exit polls have frequently gone wrong in the past, including in Bihar and Delhi in 2015. Analysts say that states with diverse populations and complex caste, community and religious affiliations tend to throw pollsters off. A good showing by the BJP will be a boost for the central government as the month-long polls were seen to be a referendum for key decisions such as the scrapping of high-value currency and strikes on militant bases across the Line of Control. The BJP has been out of power in the politically crucial state for more than a decade. The NewsX -MRC poll gave the BJP 185 seats, the Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance 120 and the Bahujan Samaj Party 90. The Times Now-VMR poll gave the BJP between 190 and 210 seats, the SP-Congress combine between 110 and 130 seats and the BSP between 57 and 74 seats. The ABP-CSDS poll gave the BJP 164-176 seats, the SP-Congress 155-169 and the BSP 60-72 seats. The IndiaTV-CVoter polls forecast 155-167 seats to the BJP, 135-147 to the SP-Congress and 81-93 to the BSP. The elections were also seen as a personal prestige fight for incumbent chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, who overcame a family feud and forged an alliance with the Congress. For BSP chief Mayawati – who lost in the 2012 state polls and the 2014 Lok Sabha elections -- a third defeat can prove disastrous.

Vidya Balan is stepping into the shoes of a woman torn between India-Pakistan in her next Begum Jaan and the actress says the film will bring out an interesting story revolving around women during Partition. B e g u m Jaan is a Hindi adaptation of director Srijit Mukherji’s Bengali film Rajkahini. The Hindi version stars Vidya in the lead as a madam of a brothel. The film chronicles the lives of women living in a brothel, who find themselves divided

by the newly-drawn LoC with half of the house in India and the other half in Pakistan post-partition and how these women fight for their rights. “I don’t think beyond textbooks we know anything more about Partition. There are not many films on Partition and not on women especially as in what happened to them. So it’s an interesting story to tell,” Vidya said. The National Award-winning actress says considering the topic the film is dealing with, it features a lot of “emotional and mental” violence, which was difficult for her to bring out convincingly. “I am the madam of a brothel and the film is set in the Partition times and we are at the risk of losing our house, our space so there is lot of emotional, mental and sexual violence and not physical violence. It was difficult to do the film as I am doing it for the first time,” she says. When asked if she thinks that perception of people would change towards women working at brothels after watching the film, Vidya says, “People will think about how they think of women and prostitutes.

At least half of Twitter took exception to filmmaker Karan Johar’s comment about actress Kangana Ranaut playing what he called the ‘woman and victim card’ and now, Kangana has corrected his terminology in an interview with Mumbai Mirror. “I use every card possible. At the workplace, it’s the badass card to fight cutthroat competition. With my family and loved ones, it’s the love card. When fighting the world, it’s the dignity card, and for a seat in a bus, it’s the woman card,” Kangana, 29, told Mumbai Mirror. “Why is Karan Johar trying to shame a woman for being a woman? This kind of talk is demeaning

to all women,” she added. At an event in London last week, Karan Johar said he was “done with Kangana playing the woman and victim card” and that if she thinks the industry is “so bad” she should leave. The filmmaker was responding to Kangana Ranaut calling him “the flag bearer of nepotism” in Bollywood - a charge she made during an appearance on his show Koffee With Karan. International Women’s Day: Sushmita Sen on women empowerment, heartbreaks and her Bollywood comeback Agency | New Delhi

Miss Universe and Bollywood actor Sushmita Sen has some wise words to share with her fans on International Women’s Day. The actor said if “you wish to respect a woman, start treating her equal,” and many such statements, which make you believe that she truly personifies beauty with the brains. During a Twitter chat with her followers, Sushmita also spoke about her comeback. When asked

which character from the literature would she love to enact on the big screen, the actor picked Cleopatra. We can totally imagine her playing the character on the big screen and we just cannot wait for her comeback. Amid many followers, there was one particular fan who stole the entire chat, and he was none other than Kapil Sharma. The comedian-turned-actor, in his own way, tried to grab the attention of Sushmita.

“I can’t speak for Karan Johar’s understanding of nepotism. If he thinks that it is restricted to nephews, daughters and cousins, I have nothing to say. But, to say that he chose not to give me work is to mock an artiste. His memory appears to be poor because we worked together in a movie (Ungli), which was produced by him. And quickly realised our sensibilities did not match.” It all began on Karan Johar’s chat show Koffee With Karan some weeks ago, where Kangana Ranaut was her usual plain-spoken self. Apart from the ‘flag bearer of nepotism’ comment, the actress also said, “Karan Johar has given me a lot of unnecessary attitude. In my biopic, if ever it’s made, you’ll play that stereotypical Bollywood biggie, who is very snooty and completely intolerant towards outsiders, flag bearer of nepotism, the movie mafia.” Kangana Ranaut was on the show with her Rangoon co-star Saif Ali Khan. Karan Johar did not respond to Kangana on the show.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar came down heavily on International Cricket Council (ICC) for not taking any action against Australian captain Steve Smith in the Decision Review System (DRS) controversy in the second Test in Bengaluru. Smith found himself in the middle of a raging controversy when he was seen looking for signals from his dressing room on whether to review his leg-before dismissal during the second innings of the Bengaluru Test. Smith was given out by the on-field umpire but he was not sure whether to go for the referral or not as Australia had already

used one of its reviews when David Warner was adjudged LBW earlier. Smith later termed it as a ‘brain fade’ moment and admitted to looking towards their dressing room for assistance over whether to ask for a review of the umpire’s decision. Talking about the incident, Gavaskar told NDTV, “It can’t be that some countries get favourable treatment and some countries do not get favourable treatment. Tomorrow, for example, if something similar is done by an Indian player ... he also should not be pulled up at all.” The third Test is scheduled to

start on Thursday, March 16 and the former India captain expected consistency from the governing body. “I would actually love to see Virat Kohli, if he is given out ... and he looks at the Indian dressing room, gets some sort of feedback from them... Let’s see what the match referee and the ICC decide then,” Gavaskar went on to add. Meanwhile, Cricket Australia had said the allegations against Smith were “outrageous” and backed their captain while BCCI came out in strong defence of India captain Virat Kohli and the team on the issue.

That was the fate of Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara, whose 2016 All England women’s singles triumph seemed a distant memory as she was ruthlessly cut down to size by a margin of 21-15, 21-14, by the resurgent Saina Nehwal, in the opening round of the 2017 All England Super Series Badminton Cham-

Being the defending champion carries its own set of pressures; and the bubbly Japanese, who will turn 22 years of age on 13 March, seemed painfully aware that she was coming unseeded into this year’s championship after dropping out of the world’s top ten, thanks to an injury layoff. Indeed, the All England was her maiden in-

ternational foray this year, and the rust in her game was obvious. Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni made a surprise visit to the Jharkhand State Cricket Association Stadium to have a look at the pitch that will host the 3rd Test between India and Australia starting March 16. The stadium is all set for its maiden Test match beginning in less than 10 days’ time. Dhoni was spotted having a discussion with the pitch curator as he took a look at the preparations ahead of the crucial tie that might decide

the fate of the ongoing series. The 35-year-old was supposed to be present for the BCCI Awards held in Bengaluru but instead chose to head back home to spend some time with his family. Dhoni is currently playing in the Vijay Hazare Trophy where his state team Jharkhand qualified for the quarter-finals in the

tournament. Curator SB Singh, however, termed it as a routine visit and said it had nothing to do with the upcoming Test. “When he’s here, he often visits the stadium for fitness work out and spends long time at the gym. Today was no different. He also saw the wicket and we had an informal discussion. This is not unusual for me,” Singh said. “He has never intervened in pitch preparation in the last four years. Being such a great player, I always look forward to his inputs on the quality of wicket.”

Always aiming to be the best in the business since his early days, India captain Virat Kohli says he very well knew that he has to consistently perform in all three formats of the game to realise his dream. Kohli, who won the the Polly Umrigar award for BCCI’s International Cricketer of the Year at the Cricket Board’s annual awards in Bengaluru on Wednesday, said he always wanted to be one of the top players in the world. “I always wanted to be one of the top players in the world for sure. So I understood what it would take for me to maintain my form in all three for-

mats. It is very important in transition phase to be available in all three formats and take the country forward,” Kohli said. Kohli also took a dig at his detractors and said he always believed in his abilities although there were many doubters around him. “All along in my career, there were many people who had doubted the way I have gone about my game. Even now there are doubters and haters all around, but one thing is for sure that I have always believed in myself,” he said. “I always believed in my heart that if I work 120 per cent everyday in my life I am answerable to no one.” Kohli on Wednesday also became the first first Indian cricketer to receive the Polly Umrigar award for the third time. Hailing his teammates for their support and contribution in helping India reach the pinnacle of Test cricket, Kohli said.

Gujarat: Women MLAs get Rs 1 cr In Maharaja Sayajirao University diary: Sages additional grant from govt behind nuclear technology, rockets, cosmetic surgery

“As a diary committee, we were inclined to follow the recommendations of a senior syndicate member,” said Ashtaputre Correspondent | Vadodara

IN ITS official diary for 2017, the Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU) has hailed several sages for their “contribution to science” — from “developing nuclear technology” to “discovering rockets and aeroplanes” and being the “father of cosmetic surgery”. For instance, the January page hails Sushrut as the “father of cosmetic surgery”. Then there is Acharya Kanad, who is described as having “developed nuclear technology”; Kapil Muni, “father of cosmology”; Maharshi Bhardwaj, “discovered rockets

and aeroplanes”; Charak Rishi, “father of medicine”; and Garga Muni, “scientist of stars”. There are a few eminent scientists and mathematicians too — Jagdish Chandra Bose, Vikram Sarabhai, C V Raman, Srinivas Ramanujan and Aryabhatt. University officials said these references were

based on the books of RSS ideologue and founder of Shiksha Bachao Andolan Samiti, Dinanath Batra. “Dinanath Batra’s books talk about Maharshi Bhardwaj being the author of Brihad-Vimana Shastra, Lohadikaram, which indicates metal and alloys used for flying objects mentioned

Women should create opportunities: Anandiben Patel

Women are capable of anything, the former Gujarat CM said Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

Former Gujarat CM Anandiben Patel inaugurated the first mentoring session of the Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), Gujarat Council, in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. It was titled “Beyond Pink” The Power of SHE (Soaring Heights of Empowerment). Addressing the gathering, Patel said, “I brought in 33% reservation in the police forc-

es for women and now you can see women with batons on the streets of Ahmedabad and thousand of women have enrolled as police personnel. A lot of policemen told me that more women in the police force has brought in a new discipline and improved the atmosphere in these stations …Also one must recall what did Narendrabhai (Modi) do? He decided and ensured that women from the

armed forces were leading from the front during the 15th August and 26th January parades in Delhi. And women readily took up the challenge and showed leadership skills. So, women are capable of anything. They only need to get the platform. Women should ensure to pick up every opportunity that comes their way and even create opportunities for themselves to move forth. Women should not wait for opportunities anymore as it is such an old idea, but should learn to create and seize them.”

in the Ramayana like the Pushpak Vimana. Similarly, Acharya Kanad is credited with developing the atomic theory, which he has elaborated in his book Vaisheshik Darshan. These are examples from India’s rich history recommended for the diary,” said an official. Professor Ajay Ashtaputre, Dean of Faculty of Performing Arts who heads the diary committee, said the names were recommended by MSU syndicate member Jignesh Soni — son of Bapubhai Soni, who is known to be among the founding members of the Jan Sangh in Gujarat. “As a diary committee, we

were inclined to follow the recommendations of a senior syndicate member,” said Ashtaputre. When contacted, Jignesh Soni told The Indian Express: “Sages mean scientists. Rishis are known for their researches, and are considered scientists in their own fields of knowledge. We have depicted the sages from different fields who are a part of our history and shastras. Many may disagree with the facts, but several people also believe it. Why are these names controversial? They are the forefathers of our nation who have achieved something. We should be proud of them. Their names should be included in mainstream education too.”

Congress, BJP spar on taking credit Two cases of drug seizure: Mumbai police for Gujarat cable-stayed bridge trace common links to Gujarat

Sunvilla News | Gandhinagar

The Mumbai Police’s investigations into two separate cases of drug seizures have found that both involved links to Gujarat. Officers said investigations into alleged wholesale drug dealer Pravin Waghela from Bandra showed that he had roped in one of the accused to courier packages containing mephedrone. Waghela was arrested in January by the Anti Narcotics Cell (ANC) of the Mumbai Police allegedly transporting

10 kg of mephedrone. The police then raided an illegal factory in Hangal in Karnataka, where Waghela was allegedly sourcing mephedrone from and arrested Ramdas Nayak, who ran it. The ANC also arrested Vapi native Firdous Nathani in the case. Police sources said Waghela would contact Nathani when he needed to send mephedrone out of the country. “Waghela would ask Nathani to meet him at a particular location and handed over

mephedrone to him,” said a senior police officer. Waghela, the police said, would open up tubes of two-wheeler tyres, stuff mephedrone into them and seal them back before handing them to Nathani. “He chose this method to avoid attracting attention,” said the officer. Further probe. however, showed that apart from transporting the drug for Waghela, Nathani had allegedly been acquiring mephedrone himself from Gujarat.
