Dantewada : A BJP legislator Bhima Mandavi and four security personnel have been killed in a Maoist attack in south Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada region, a senior police officer said on Tuesday. Police said Maoists had blown up an improvised explosive device on the road when the Dantewada legislator Bhima Mandavi’s convoy was passing through the district. The BJP legislator and 5 security personnel were killed in the attack, said Dantewada district police chief Abhishek Pallav. The incident took place just two days before the first phase of voting for the Lok Sabha elections. The attack took place between Kuakonta and Syamgiri in Dantewada. The cops had laid a trap to nab the accused after they received a tip-off. Three women were rescued from the spot. According to police, the accused used to operate the racket through a website under the guise of escort
to La Citadel complex in Alkapuri. The decoy cop reached there and entered the flat. When he saw two women inside, he signalled other cops, who raided the flat and nabbed three people from the spot. The accused were identified as Jeevan Bhul, a resident of Delhi, Faizul Sheikh, a resident of West Bengal and Shyam Balram, a resident of Nepal. “The fourth accused, Sandip, had taken the flat on rent and used to give it to the other three to operate the prostitution racket. The trio worked as agents,” the police said. “One of the accused, Faizul had sent another woman to a hotel in Alkapuri. She too was rescued,” Jadeja said. He added that others involved in the racket will also be nabbed soon. This is the second sex racket that the city police has busted within the past three days.

The BJP’s manifesto focuses on national security, rural India and the economy
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections on Monday, three days before the first phase of polling. Drafting a vision for the future, or making a set of commitments, for a party which has been in power for five years is a challenge because it gives rise to an obvious question: why have these promises not been fulfilled in the preceding five years? The BJP has addressed this question by focusing on both what it considers to be its achievements since 2014, especially in the realm of rural welfare and infrastructure, and the unfinished tasks ahead. This ties in with the larger pitch that PM Narendra Modi has been making in his campaign rallies: of having fulfilled basic needs; and seeking an opportunity to fulfil aspirations. There are three significant strands in the manifesto. The first is what the BJP clearly considers its strength in this election: nationalism or national security. It speaks of decisive action against terrorism, and taking steps to end infiltration. It promises to speed up defence purchases — though this will raise questions about how defence spending is not commensurate with its needs. The manifesto reinforces the party’s commitment to the Citizenship Amendment Bill, and while the BJP has sought to reassure the Northeast that its concerns about an assault on its distinct identity will be taken care of, this is bound to generate a backlash in the region once again. The BJP has also reiterated its traditional position on Jammu and Kashmir: of abrogating Articles 370 and 35A. This stand of the BJP manifesto is primarily aimed at appealing to its core base, projecting Modi as the only leader capable of making India secure, and the party as the only force committed to nationalism. The second major strand of the manifesto is its focus on rural India. A consistent critique against this government over the past few years has been the fact that there is agrarian distress, and farmer incomes have actually dipped. The BJP once again reiterated its promise of doubling farmer income by 2022, a claim most experts are sceptical of. But more specifically, it said that it would invest Rs 25 lakh crore over the next five years in rural India; it would expand the PM Kisan scheme — of providing Rs 6000 annually to small and marginal farmers with land holdings of up to 2 hectares — to each and every farmer, and it would provide interest free loans for up to Rs 1 lakh. With these promises, the BJP is clearly trying to address what could be a vulnerability vis a vis its electoral prospects in rural areas. But whether it indeed leads to a much needed structural transformation in agriculture and whether fiscal implications of expanding the Kisan scheme have been thought through is not clear. The third strand is the manifesto’s promises on the economy and employment. This once again has been an area of perceived weakness for the government, even though the accuracy of data has been contested. The BJP has spoken of further improving India’s rank in the ease of doing business; improving the share of manufacturing in GDP; increasing exports; supporting entrepreneurs; identifying champion sectors in which younger people can be productively engaged. India indeed needs all this. But the BJP will have to do a lot more in credibly communicating how India will address its unemployment crisis. With the Congress manifesto already out, and the BJP’s manifesto released, there should now be a more informed, robust debate between all political actors on what is the best roadmap for India, and who can provide it. New Delhi : The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) on Monday said that it would decide on the insolvency of debt-ridden Reliance Communications (RCom) soon, with the company pleading for a go-ahead from the tribunal for insolvency proceedings. While RCom wants to initiate insolvency proceeding due to its inability to pay back lenders, one of its creditors—Swiss telecom major Ericsson—opposes the move. The NCLAT on Monday said that if RCom was to go into insolvency, Ericsson would have to pay
back the Rs 550 crore it received last month from the Anil Ambani firm after a legal battle in the Supreme Court. “Why one party will take the amount and let the financial creditors suffer,” asked the two-judge NCLAT bench headed by chairman Justice S J Mukhopadhaya. The NCLAT also said that it would consider, at the next hearing on April 30, the reply filed by the Department of Telecom (DoT) over RCom’s plea against a show cause notice issued by the government over unpaid spectrum charges. The NCLAT had stayed the two notices issued by the DoT to RCom over the cancellation of its spectrum licence on March 26.

Parents of 40 relieved students of Ahmedabad based GIIS school rush to State BJP headquarters
Ahmedabad : In order to make representation over fees issue, a group of parents of the students of Ahmedabad based Global Indian International School (GIIS) today rushed to the State BJP headquarters Kamalam in Gadhinagar where Chief Minister Vijay Rupani’s press conference was underway. The Chief Minister deputed State party spokesperson Bharat Pandya to hear the parents. The parents told Bharat Pandya that their children were not permitted to join the classes by GIIS management over fees issue for last over a week. The parents said they were ready to pay fees as per the State government appointed Fee Regulatory Committee (FRC) order. However the school management was seeking more fee. The parents said they were at Kamalam to seek guidance of the Chief Minister on whether the parents should pay fees as per the school management’s decision or as per FRC order.
The parents said children were being asked to leave the classes and sit in reception area or go back to home by school management. While hearing the parents, Pandya spoke to Education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama over this issue and fixed a meeting between the parents and the minister at 8.30 am tomorrow. Pandya said proper action will be taken by government in this regard. The Fee Regulatory Committee (FRC) has passed an order, directing Ahmedabad based Global Indian International School to readmit 40 students who were issued school leaving certificates on grounds that they were not paying additional fees. The order stated that parents of the 40 students will be required to pay fees finalized by the FRC. Parents of the 40 students had approached the Supreme Court, challenging the decision of the school. Hearing of the case in the Supreme Court will take place on April 12.

Ahmedabad: The Election Commission on Monday issued show-cause notices to BJP legislator Madhu Srivastava for threatening the electors with serious consequences if they did not vote for the ruling party. An MLA from Waghodia Assembly constituency under the Vadodara Lok Sabha seat, Srivastava appealed to people to put their seal on the Lotus symbol, failing which they would have to incur his wrath. The BJP legislator was seen in a video, which went viral on social media, threatening the electorate in Waghodia constituency to vote for BJP candidate from Vadodara Ranjan Bhatt in the parliamentary polls. Addressing the people at the opening of an election office in Waghodia last week, Srivastava said he would “fix” whoever was staying illegally in the area and dares

Rajkot : A 14-year-old girl was raped by a 22-yearold man on Saturday, the complaint of which was lodged on Monday. The crime occurred in Kankotgam locality on Kalawad Road in Rajkot. Police booked two persons for the crime, as the girl said she had been raped twice — first by Savan and Sohil six months ago and the second time by Savan on Saturday. According to police, on Saturday, while the girl was returning home from her school, Savan abducted her on his motorcycle and took her to a secluded place in Kankotgam and raped her.
