Sensex slips below 30,000, down 133 pts in early trade Agency | New Delhi
The BSE benchmark cracked below the 30,000-level by dropping 133 points in early trade today on emergence of profit-booking after yesterday’s strong rally. The 30-share barometer tripped by 133.04 points, or 0.44 per cent, to 29,993.17 in early trade. The index had risen by 231.41 points in the previous session, buoyed by reform steps in the banking and infra space. Sectoral indices led by metal, capital goods, FMCG, IT, teck, auto, power and realty were trading in the negative zone, falling by up to 1.45 per cent. Also, the NSE Nifty was trading 32.35 points or 0.35 per cent lower at 9,327.55. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.03 per cent lower in yesterday’s trade amid mixed earnings.

Bhardwaj claimed that the only requirement to rig the EVM was to replace its motherboard and then feed a secret code, which when entered at any point activates a mechanism through which votes are cast in favour of a particular candidate irrespective of what button the voter presses. The apex court on Monday reinstated criminal conspiracy charge against Prasad in a fodder scam case RC 64 (A)/96 related to fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 90 lakh from Jharkhand’s Deoghar treasury and asked the CBI to complete the trial within a period of nine months. Justice CS Karnan is the first High Court judge in India to be sentenced to jail by the Supreme Court on charges of contempt of court. “We are of unanimous view that Justice C S Karnan committed contempt of court, contempt of judiciary and the process,” a seven-judge bench headed by CJI JS Khehar said. Justice Karnan of the Calcutta High Court will be taken into custody forthwith and will spend six months in jail. Seven judges including the CJI had initiated suo motu contempt proceedings against Justice Karnan in February after he named 20 ‘corrupt’ judges demanding a probe against them. Justice Karnan has alleged that he is being
targeted because he is a Dalit. An order was also passed against him restraining him from engaging in judicial and administrative work. Why Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP must be careful not to disturb India’s democratic stability The Aam Aadmi Party has, in the Delhi assembly, presented a carefully constructed case alleging that EVMs can be tampered with -- and that this has been a feature of recent elections. This is a charge AAP has been levelling ever since the Punjab elections but presenting it on the floor of the House lends it a much higher degree of legitimacy and seriousness. It has been echoed, to a lesser extent, by other parties, including the Congress. And it is, despite the repeated assertion by the Election Commission that EVMs are foolproof, becoming a key element of the opposition discourse in the country. It is also a charge that the BJP, it must be noted, threw at the EC and the dispensation of the day after its defeat in 2009. There are enough experts -- particularly former election commissioners -- who have provided a firm and scientific rebuttal to the charges. It is beyond the scope of this piece, and the expertise of this writer, to debate the merits of the EVM. The EC has convened an all-party meeting and may organise a hackathon to allay apprehensions. But what is of, probably, critical relevance here is the implication of a charge like this, for it strikes at not just the ruling dispensation but the very foundations of the democratic game in India. Look around the country, into the neighbourhood. I come from Nepal -- which has had seven constitutions in the last seven decades. Elections have only been sporadically held, and the electoral results have often been overturned. In 1959, the country held its first election, only to see a monarch dismiss an elected government and take over in 1960. In 1991, the country saw restoration of democracy and held its second election, but by 1996, an armed rebel group -- the Maoists -- had taken up arms against the democratic regime. Eventually, an elected parliament was dissolved and in 2005, another despotic king took over absolute power. In 2013, a second Constituent Assembly election took place wherein the Maoists lost; they immediately took to questioning the legitimacy of the results before better sense prevailed. Or see Pakistan, where an acute civil-military imbalance has constantly threatened democracy. Elections here too have been sporadic. Electoral results have been rejected, like in 1970, which paved the way for the formation of Bangladesh. They have been undermined often, with the military dismissing elected Prime Ministers, imprisoning them and taking over power. The first smooth transfer of power from one elected government to another happened only in 2013, when Asif Ali Zardari gave way to Nawaz Sharif. Or take Bangladesh, itself a result of an election outcome that was rejected by the West Pakistani elite. In Dhaka, the political acrimony and mistrust between the two Begums -- Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia -- is so deep that neither can trust each other with power when elections are held. That is why a caretaker arrangement was first devised to hold elections.

Parineeti Chopra donned a candy-pink collared jersey dress, and reminded us of the nurse-Barbies we loved as kids--ONLY as kids. The sad blue cut-out belt was mismatched, but it wasn’t as painful a sight as that embroidered colourful flower. If you haven’t already compared her Sonal Verma attire to a pink gift wrapping sheet, the metallic-blue, flower-like brotch (read decoration) on the shoulder will point your thoughts in that direction. Parineeti dressed like a gift, but this sure was a shocking surprise. Parineeti’s melodious voice might have left the audience mind-blown, but her over-the-top pretentious-rockstar outfit made us want to look away. We have no idea why Parineeti was trying to pull off a bedsheet-like Krishna Mehta cape in those weird colours. Like the combination of an orange top and multi-coloured cape wasn’t bad enough, she donned a lot of shabby-looking accessories--maybe she was trying to have her own Bappi Da Day. The makeup was so loud, it almost drowned her beautiful voice. Parineeti wore a pink dhoti-kurta, and a belt--no, we’re not making this up. The silver, chunky choker and earrings were a bad pick for the Indo-Western ensemble, but we guess the tan-coloured waist-belt ruined it further. She teamed a pair of floral-print juttis with the Jade by Monica & Karishma outfit, leading to us losing faith in juttis. The metallic handcuff she sported was absolutely unwanted, like the rest of her accessories. We haven’t seen an Indo-Western this imbalanced in the longest of time. Parineeti, we really hope you up your fashion game sometime soon. For a change, we liked her neat pair of strappy heels--that’s all we’ve liked about Parineet’s ensembles during these promotions.

The volume of social and affordable housing will rise almost 70 percent to 10.5 million annually by 2024, exceeding the 33 percent increase in the premium market. “The housing sector is at a tipping point and will be the economy’s next big growth driver,” Mumbai-based analyst Mahesh Nandurkar and his colleagues wrote in a note last week. “The catalyst is the government’s big push for an ambitious housing program.” So while luxury residences like 27-story “Antilia” owned by Reliance Industries Ltd. Chairman Mukesh D Ambani, and reported to worth anywhere from more than $400 million to over a $1 billion, have hogged Mumbai’s skyline, more affordable options may soon be springing up.
Rupee sees biggest loss against US dollar in 2017

The Indian rupee on Tuesday weakened against the US dollar, tracking the losses in Asian currencies markets pushing the currency to its biggest loss for the calendar year. Rupee closed at 64.63 a dollar, down 0.50% from its Monday’s close of 64.31. The rupee opened at 64.42 a dollar and touched a high and a low of 64.42 and 64.70, respectively. The benchmark Sensex index rose 0.02% or 7.10 points to close at 29,933.25. So far this year, it has risen 12.42%. So far this year, the rupee has gained 5.1%, while foreign investors bought
$6.14 billion and $8.19 billion in local equity and debt markets, respectively. The 10-year bond yield closed at 6.943% compared to its previous close of 6.93%. Bond yields and prices move in opposite directions. Asian currencies were trading lower. South Korean won was down 0.684%, Japanese yen 0.509%, Indonesian rupiah 0.427%, Taiwan dollar 0.33%, Thai baht 0.288%, Singapore dollar 0.340%, Malaysian ringgit 0.258%, Philippines peso 0.150%, China Offshore 0.069%, China Renminbi lower 0.030% and Hong Kong dollar was down 0.001%.

cap of 70 years on administrators and the tenure of office-bearers in states and BCCI, which the state bodies are contesting, the CoA is willing to consider two of them, top board sources told TOI on Monday. If the onestate, one-vote reform of the Lodha committee is revised, states with multiple cricket bodies like Maharashtra and Gujarat would continue to enjoy voting rights. Even the government votes like the Railways, Services and University votes in BCCI would be restored. Under the Lodha reforms, the four state bodies in Maharashtra (Vidharbha, Mumbai, Cricket Club of India and Maharashtra) would get the voting rights on rotational basis. Even increasing the number of selectors from
three to five would ensure better coverage of a vast country like India. “The CoA will make efforts to reach out to the Supreme Court to see whether a common ground could be achieved. Otherwise, this tug of war does not seem to end,” a top board functionary said. Expressing satisfaction over the planned move, a West Zone representative said: “It would be good for the cricket bodies in Gujarat and Maharashtra and others. The CoA has taken the right initiative in bringing all the state bodies together.” A few of the state associations even wanted the three-year cooling off and age tenure clause to be altered. A constable with Detroj police station was stabbed to death by four men, near Detroj bus stand, on Sunday evening. Gujarat records 352 deaths by electrocution in 2016-17

As many as 352 people died if electrocution in Gujarat in 2016-17, compared to 315 in 2015-16, an increase of 11.74%. However, the number of non-fatal electrical accidents involving humans reduced to 256 in 2016-17 from 262 in 2015-16. The deaths of animals by electrocution rose 12.74% to 460 in 2016-17, from 408 in the preceeding year. ”An analysis of standard of performance reports (SoP) available on Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission (GERC) shows that there have been 11.74% more human
deaths by electrocution. This comes despite the state regulatory authority saying that it is closely monitoring the issue of electrocution deaths,” said K K Bajaj, a city-based energy policy expert. Other experts suggest that deaths are also caused due to people not following proper safety measures, especially in rural areas, and faulty equipment. ”Distribution companies (discoms) do not provide details of action taken against employees responsible for accidents and are reluctant to share details of compensation paid in terms of the amount and the number of victims,” Bajaj added.
