Dalit girl found murdered in Meerut

The body of a 12-yearold Dalit girl was found in the Daraula area of the district with police saying that the victim was murdered by unidentified persons. The body of the girl, a class eight student, bearing injury marks and with her clothes in a tattered state, was discovered in a sugarcane field last evening, police said.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said BJP’s electoral drubbing in Bihar will not impact economy or the reforms programme and the government will go ahead with the process of enacting Goods and Services Tax (GST) law. “I don’t see it as a setback to the economy...structural reforms will continue. They should continue at a rapid pace,” he said and expressed the hope that JD(U) would support the Constitutional amendment bill to roll out the long-pending GST as the new tax structure would benefit Bihar. About reforms, Jaitley told television channels that government would continue them by taking executive actions and also in the Budget, which would be announced in February next year. To a question of the pending GST bill, he hoped that Bihar would support the legislation because as a consum-

ing state it would benefit from the new indirect tax legislation. “Bihar and JD(U) had supported this in the Lower House... If Nitish Kumar, as a responsible leader, has been elected on the plank of development, then certainly he wants more revenue for Bihar,....,” Jaitley said. The government had planned to roll out GST,from 1 April, 2016 but the Constitution Amendment Bill is stuck in the Rajya Sabha where the ruling NDA does not have a majority. Once rolled out, it will subsume various levies like excise, service tax, sales tax, octroi, etc, and ensure a single indirect tax regime for the entire country.

Stating that GST roll out is a “matter of time, Jaitley said the “obstructionist” position of the Congress would not continue for long as the country’s

mood is reform oriented. On whether he would talk to Nitish Kumar for supporting GST, he said, “I don’t see any reason, why just because he is in alliance with the Congress at the moment, he will... change his position. If he changes his position, then I will have to explain this and I am quite certain, as a responsible leader, that will not happen”. The government, he added, was open to suggestion

on November 4. At the time of the incident, Captain E Samuel and T K Guha were on board of the copter. However, the body recovered today is yet to be identified. “Wreckage of ditched Pawan Hans helicopter located and cockpit with body of one of the pilots was recovered,” a Coast Guard spokesperson said. He said the recovery of other parts of the chopper was in progress. to improve the architecture of the GST. “I am for a GST with a proper architecture, not for a GST with a defective architecture. So if there is any suggestion in the direction of strengthening GST and its architecture, I am certainly open to that,” he added. One what should be the rate of the GST, Jaitley said, “the lower the better.” Jaitley said the Bihar election outcome is not a setback to the economy. Asked about Moody’s Analytics report which said Prime Minister Narendra Modi must keep BJP mem-

bers in check or risk “losing domestic and global credibility”, he said the commentary by the “young analyst” is incorrect. “India is the most tolerant society in the world... and I will reject any contention which says that a stray incident happening in any part of India makes it intolerant. India is tolerant, Some unfortunate incidents take place, that doesn’t make India an intolerant society. India is a liberal society, it will continue to remain one,” the minister said.

Rahul is the ‘architect’ of victorious alliance in Bihar: Congress Agency | New Delhi

As the Nitish Kumar-led coalition marched to victory in Bihar Assembly polls, Congress on Sunday lost no time in crediting Rahul Gandhi for it, hailing him as the “architect” of the Grand Alliance. “While Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is the architect of the victory in Bihar, Rahul Gandhi is the architect of the alliance,” Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam said. It is the general refrain in the party with general secretary Shakeel Ahmed insisting that the Grand Alliance could not have been possible but for the effective role played by Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi. Leaders recalled that it was Rahul who brought Nitish and Lalu Prasad together and

played a key role of catalyst at a time when the RJD supremo was having reservations. The victory in Bihar is also being talked about as a good timing for Rahul to take over as party chief. Replying to questions, party leaders including Shakeel Ahmed said it is for party chief Sonia Gandhi and Rahul to decide on the issue. There was much talk that an AICC session could be

held in the current month itself. Bihar is the first victory for Congress after a long time - the last major victory being the Karnataka assembly polls where it defeated the BJP. The 40-minute meeting between Rahul and Nitish Kumar in Delhi months ahead of the polls played a crucial role and is being termed as “path breaking”, Congress sources said.

Don’t use Bihar verdict to disrupt Parliament: Govt tells opposition

2 / Dt. 10-11-2015, Tuesday Editors’ Picks tuesday, NOVEMBER 10, 2015 The outcome of the Bihar Polls: Scripted a new grammar of politics in India

The outcome of the 2015 Bihar assembly election has scripted a new grammar of politics in India. It is a staggering victory for the Mahagathbandan. All the exit polls were wrong. No state election had seen such a sustained effort by the ruling formation at the Centre to usurp the provincial electoral space. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led this blitzkrieg from the front, assisted by BJP president Amit Shah and a host of senior party leaders. The duo of Nitish Kumar and Lalu Prasad countered this with gusto, rekindling the “social justice” strategy of the 1990s. Unlike the parliamentary elections of 2014, they fought like Siamese twins this election. The PM’s authority will diminish with this result. When the election in Bihar was announced, the Mahagathbandhan was in disarray. Initially, Nitish’s spin doctors wanted him to go solo, based on his enviable track record. It was believed any association with Lalu would sully his brand. But the results show more seats for the RJD than JD(U). Even when the alliance was finally fructified, there was mutual suspicion. The important question was whether the rapport between Nitish and Lalu would translate to grassroots chemistry between their social bases. Further, when the Mahagathbandhan was getting its final touches, the missile of discord fired by Mulayam Singh Yadav threatened to disrupt it. Mulayam, Pappu Yadav and Tariq Anwar were not part of the alliance. Given an absence of political tolerance, the Left parties could also not be roped into the Mahagathbandhan. Finally, there was Asaduddin Owaisi of the AIMIM, throwing his hat in the race. Both new political configurations were electorally untested. Incidentally, this year is the silver jubilee year of the triumph of “social justice” in Bihar. One wondered whether, after 25 years, social justice was still in the cognitive world of the Bihar electorate, given that there have been several political changes since. Two associates of the social justice group, Ram Vilas Paswan and Jitan Ram Manjhi, had even gone over to the NDA. It was essentially a bipolar election between the NDA and the Mahagathbandhan. The parties outside these two formations had only a thin presence. So, why did the Mahagathbandhan win? First, both coalitions tried to appeal to the young aspirational voters, irrespective of caste and class. As many as 56 per cent voters in Bihar are in the 18-40 age group. Among them, 1.8 crore are below 30. There are 24.13 lakh first-time voters, who constitute 3.5 per cent of the electorate.

Rock legend Saul Hudson, popularly called Slash, has said he wants to work with Indian musicians for a project. The former lead guitarist of the rock band Guns N’ Roses, was initially planning for the tie up on his maiden visit to the country this time. “We were talking about doing something like that (collaborating with Indian musicians) on this trip. I cannot share the details but it was too time-consuming and too complicated to do it on this trip. But it would be an interesting thing. The plan was to take some of our material with our Indian musicians and so on. It would be very interesting,” said Slash. The 50-year-old

The actress, who made her international TV debut with “Quantico” this year, went on to add that “Early Happy Diwali from cold Montreal. I miss home! Priyanka plays Bajirao’s first wife Kashibai. In the poster, Priyanka can be seen standing with an ‘aarti thali’ in her hands and is seen in a Maharashtrian attire. The canvas of the image is a myriad of colours like orange and purple with an impression of palace and Marathas in the background. The film, which is expected to be opulent and grand, is scheduled to release on December 18.

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo Gets Three Cuts From the Censor Board Agency | Mumbai

Agency | Mumbai Sridevi made a comeback to Tamil cinema after more than 20 years with Vijay’s Puli. However, things don’t seem to have gone too well for Sridevi. The actress has reportedly filed a complaint against the producers of Puli, PT Selvakumar and Shibu Thameens. Puli didn’t fare well at the box office unfortunately for Vijay and the producers. Sridevi was rumoured to have been paid a whopping Rs 5 core for the role in the film. It looks like the pro-

ducers still owe Sridevi Rs 50 lakhs for the film. She has now reportedly filed a complaint at the Mumbai Producers’ Council which in turn has been referred to the Tamil Nadu Film Producers’ Council. The producers of Puli got into trouble with the Income Tax department when their houses and offices were raided (along with actor Vijay’s) a day before the release of the film. It was widely reported that their bank accounts were frozen and financial dealings put on hold.

The unbelievable has happened. The Censor Board recently suggested Sooraj Barjatya, possibly the cleanest filmmaker in Bollywood, to effect three cuts in his upcoming Salman Khan and Sonam Kapoor-starrer, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. The Board, we hear, took objection to the use of rakhail (mistress) apart from two other scenes. The examining committee watched the film last week before suggesting the cuts, a source from the film’s team informs, adding, “The makers decided to adhere to their suggestion.” The two scenes that have been censored includes a Ram-Leela sequence which had a couple of old, Hindi melodies play-

ing in the background. “The scene plays out with the film’s title track and was interspersed with two old songs in some portions. The Censor Board felt it was not suitable to accompany the Ram-Leela visuals. The other scene shows a person being hanged, but the examining committee wanted it to be a long shot. The makers have complied with all the suggestions,” adds a source close to the project. The censor trouble came as a shock to the film’s unit, especially since Barjatya is at the helm. “He is known for making the cleanest family films. In fact, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo has zero offensive content. This is the first time that such a thing has happened with Barjatya.

the BCCI in its Annual General Body meeting, made a number of changes with reforms on the top of their agenda. BCCI, under Shashank Manohar, cracked down on conflict of interest as they removed big names like Team India Director Ravi Shastri and Roger Binny from IPL Governing Council and the post of selector respectively. “Roger Binny might be out of the BCCI senior selection committee as the cricket board seeks to address the conflict of interest issues in its 86th AGM in Mumbai on Monday,”

We have shown in the past that we’re a bounce back side: Brendon McCullum we had reported on Monday. India v/s South Africa: ‘Keep it short’ seems to be motto of new brand of India’s Test cricket Agency | Mohali

Keep it short. These three words epitomize India’s new brand of Test cricket against visiting teams at home. There’s no other way to explain how the last four Tests in India have ended well within three days. And with the hosts winning all of them, no one, not least the players, is really complaining. It could be argued that out of those four Tests, two were against a weak West Indies team, but the other two came against a formidable Australian team in 2013 and a No. 1 ranked South Africa two days back. It’s not hard to understand why matches are getting shorter on Indian soil over last few years. Take the example of the wicket for the first Test in Mohali. On Day One itself, spinners took nine out of the 12 wickets on a pitch that extracted turn just after a dozen overs. And when 18 wickets fell in 75.2 overs on the Day Three, the debate

of falling technique and temperament could not be avoided. However, the excessive dryness of the wicket before the start the Test played a role in creating doubts in the minds of both teams. It affected the Proteas more, because they knew they needed to bat out of their skins on a dust bowl.
