The counsel for petitioner Satish S Kambiye said the former CJI was not eligible to be nominated to Rajya Sabha. “Who will decide the eligibility? You? Sorry, we don’t find any merit in this plea. You should be fortunate that we are not imposing a cost on you,” the bench said.
Man Behind Historic SC Rulings, DY Chandrachud Takes Oath as 50th Chief Justice of India Agency News: New Delhi Senior-most Supreme Court judge Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud took oath as the 50th Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Wednesday, succeeding Uday Umesh Lalit. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to DY Chandrachud at Rashtrapati Bhawan in Delhi. Justice Chandrachud assumed charge as the 50th CJI and will have a tenure of over two years. Born on November 11, 1959, Justice DY Chandrachud has served as the Additional Solicitor General of India in 1998. He was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court in 2013. He has been associated with the Bombay High Court too and was elevated as a judge in the Supreme Court in 2016. Some of Justice DY Chandrachud’s notable judgments are on the Indian Constitution, comparative constitutional law, human rights, gender justice, public interest litigation, criminal laws and commercial laws. DY Chandrachud, during his tenure as a judge of the Supreme Court, overturned two judgments of his father YV Chandrachud who served as 16th Chief Justice of India. Chandrachud has been part of several Constitution benches and landmark verdicts of the top court including on matters relating to the Ayodhya land dispute, the right to privacy and adultery. The Rouse Avenue Court on Wednesday reserved the order on the bail petitions moved by Hyderabad-based businessman Abhishek Boinpally and Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) communication in-charge Vijay Nair in connection with the alleged Delhi excise policy scam. Special Judge MK Nagpal on Wednesday reserved the order after the conclusion of the bail arguments made by the accused’s lawyer and by the prosecution agency. The court said the order will be passed on the bail petitions on November 14, 2022. On September 27, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested businessman Vijay Nair, former CEO of event management company Only Much Louder, during the investigation in relation to the Delhi excise policy scam. Abhishek was arrested
by CBI recently in an ongoing investigation of a case related to the alleged irregularities in framing and implementation of the excise policy of the Delhi government. CBI, in its reply, opposed the bail petitions and said that it would not be right to give bail when the investigation was still at an important stage. CBI said that if given bail now, the accused may tamper with the evidence. CBI said Vijay Nair has been in the role of middleman in this matter. He has been regularly present in the meeting. In the Abhishek Boinpally matter, CBI said during the course of the investigation, it has been revealed through statements of witnesses.

Lord Justice Jeremy Stuart-Smith and Justice Robert Jay, who presided over the appeal hearing earlier this year, delivered the verdict. The 51-year-old businessman, who remains behind bars at Wandsworth prison in south-east London, had been granted permission to appeal against District Judge Sam Goozee’s Westminster Magistrates’ Court ruling in favour of extradition last February. The leave to appeal in the High Court was granted on
two grounds under Article 3 of the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR) to hear arguments if it would unjust or oppressive to extradite Modi due to his mental state and Section 91 of the Extradition Act 2003, also related to mental ill health. Modi is the subject of two sets of criminal proceedings, with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) case relating to a large-scale fraud upon PNB through the fraudulent obtaining of letters of undertaking (LoUs) or loan agreements, and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) case relating to the laundering of the proceeds of that fraud. He also faces two additional charges of “causing the disappearance of evidence” and intimidating witnesses or criminal intimidation to cause death, which were added to the CBI case.

An essential characteristic of modern capitalism is that the living conditions of millions of people are determined by the whims and caprices of a handful of financial speculators; indeed, that is what ‘leaving things to the market’ really entails. Consider what is happening in India today. There is a massive outflow of finance from the country because of which the rupee is depreciating vis-à-vis the dollar. It has already fallen by more than 10% since February even though the Reserve Bank of India has spent over $100 billion, almost a sixth of the country’s foreign exchange reserves, to prevent such a fall, and even though it has been raising the interest rate almost in tandem with the rise in the United States of America to discourage such an outflow. The depreciation of the rupee is exacerbating the inflationary process by raising the cost of imported goods, including essential goods like oil; inflation, in turn, is creating expectations of a further depreciation of the exchange rate that become self-fulfilling: they encourage a further outflow of finance and cause a further depreciation of the rupee. So the spiral of depreciation-inflation-depreciation goes on, fed by the rush of speculators away from the rupee. This latest financial outflow began with the rise in the US interest rates effected by the Federal Reserve Board from the beginning of March. The financial outflow was not only from India but from almost the entire capitalist world, barring one notable exception. That exception, ironically, was Russia, against whom sanctions were imposed by the Western powers led by the US with the avowed objective of ‘reducing the rouble to rubble’; and yet, after an initial fall, the rouble has recovered dramatically to reach a level vis-à-vis the dollar that has not been seen in years, aided no doubt by Russia’s insistence on being paid for its oil and gas in terms of roubles. The currencies of other capitalist countries, including India, by contrast are falling despite increases in their interest rates. It may be thought that this financial outflow is occurring from India only because the rise in Indian interest rates has not yet matched the increase in US interest rates, that it would automatically come to an end when this matching is fully achieved; and, indeed, it is true that while the increase in the US federal funds rate between March 1 and October 31 has been 3%, the increase in the - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara RBI’s repo rate has been around 2%.

The duo contended in the petition that they were witnesses in the trial against the accused and “victims” of the demolition of the disputed structure. In its objection, the state government and the CBI had stressed that the two appellants were not complainants or victims in the case and as such they cannot appeal as a stranger against the verdict of the trial court. After hearing the arguments of the parties, the bench reserved its order on October 31. The Babri mosque was demolished by ‘karsewaks’ on December 6, 1992.

In a terrifying incident, a man in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruppur killed his wife by choking her with a dupatta on November 6. Investigations revealed the woman was spending too much time on social media, creating reels, and had infuriated her husband. Amirthalingam, a 38-year-old man from Dindigul, working as a daily wage labourer in vegetable market, has resided in Sellam Nagar of Tiruppur district. His wife Chithra worked in a garment factory in Tiruppur. The couple had two daughters. Apparently, Chithra had a habit of frequently posting reels on Instagram following the TikTok ban. After gaining more contacts and followers, Chithra made a decision to pursue acting. With more than 30,000 followers on
Instagram, two months prior, she had gone to Chennai seeking opportunity in the cinema industry. In the meantime, Amirthalingam and Chithra have argued numerous times about her propensity for posting reels and the man had developed an argument on how much time she was devoting to that. Last week, Chithra went back to Tiruppur to look after the wedding preparations for her daughter. Soon after the function, when Chithra was about to leave for Chennai, Amirthalingam forbade her from doing so. On the day of the incident, an altercation sparked between the duo over her desire for posting reels and the likelihood to act in the cinema. Chithra informed me that she would be travelling to Chennai. An intense verbal clash broke between us. I reprimanded her with stern words.

property dispute in Kagal tehsil of Maharashtra’s Kolhapur district, police said on Wednesday. The incident took place in Vhannur village on Tuesday morning and a case has been registered against the victim’s son and his wife under Indian Penal Code section 307 (attempt to murder), they said, adding the couple is on the run. “There was a property dispute in the family and as a fallout of that, the main accused’s wife hurled abuses at her father-in-law. When the elderly man went to the toilet, his son allegedly threw some inflammable substance in the lavatory and set it on fire,” said an officer of the Kagal police station. “The elderly man sustained burn injuries. The couple is absconding after the incident and a search has been launched for them,” he added.

Thane: TMC to hold monthly Lokshahi Din on December 5 Agency News : Thane The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) will hold the monthly Lokshahi Din on Monday, December 5. The officials from the Thane civic body have urged the citizens to submit their applications in two copies to the civic body office 15 days prior to Lokshahi Din, that is, until November 21. While filing the applications, Form 1(b) must be submitted by the applicant along with each application. Form 1(b) is made available at the Civic Facilities Center. Citizens whose applications have not been acted on for one month will have their applications accepted during Lokshahi Day at the TMC headquarters.Citizens are required to mention the
token number received during Lokshahi Day while submitting the applications. “Applicant should submit only one complaint in one application; applications with more than one complaint will not be accepted,” TMC officials stated. Similarly, cases pending in various courts relating to establishment, cases relating to the right to information, as well as applications made on the letterhead of the organisation of political party corporators, applications made in cases where the final answer has been or will be given, will not be accepted. TMC has appealed to the applicants that, while applying for Lokshahi Din, one should clearly mention in the application that they are going to participate through video conferencing or face-to-face.
Karnataka Congress working president Satish Jarkiholi, who faced massive backlash for his statement on the origins of the word Hindu, on Wednesday withdrew his remarks and issued an apology. Calling it a “conspiracy” against him, he asked Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai to order a probe into the matter. “There is a conspiracy to project me as antiHindu,” he said and wrote to CM Bommai seeking the formation of a committee to investigate the matter. Earlier in the day, the BJP held protests in different parts of Karnataka, including Bengaluru, condemning Jarkiholi for his controversial statement that the word ‘Hindu’ is Persian and it has a “dirty” meaning. The saffron party also targeted the Congress on the issue, calling it “anti-Hindu”, and demanded his sacking from the party. Bommai also questioned Congress leader Siddaramaiah for being silent on the issue and demanded his comments on the row. Tata Motors on Wednesday reported a net loss of Rs 898 crore for the second quarter ended September 30, 2022. The auto major had reported a net loss of Rs 4,416 crore in the JulySeptember period of the last fiscal. Total income, however, increased to Rs 80,650 crore in the period under review, as compared to Rs 62,246 crore in the year-ago period. On a standalone basis, the company reported a net loss of Rs 293 crore. It had posted a
net loss of Rs 659 crore in the same period a year ago. The total income rose to Rs 15,142 crore in the second quarter, as compared to Rs 11,197 crore in the same period last year. Shares of the company on Wednesday closed 0.44 per cent down at Rs 433 apiece on the BSE.

Market observers said investor sentiment on bank stocks has got a boost as lenders have put up an impressive show in earning numbers in the July-September period of this financial year. ”We remain positive on banking stocks fundamentally. In the medium term, operating metrics are likely to be strong,” said Hemali Dhame, associate vice president and head of research at Kotak Securities. He was, however, quick to caution that some of the positives, such
as healthy loan growth and better asset quality, have been factored in from an immediate near-term perspective, and therefore any surprises would weigh on prices. “Most banks in the management calls are guiding for high loan growth, driven primarily by retail and SME segments. The corporate segment has also shown early signs of loan growth,” said Sharad Chandra Shukla, director, Mehta Equities. Rahul Sharma, head of research at Equity 99, also sounded positive about bank stocks. “Nifty Bank looks well positioned for more upside and will also witness higher levels in the coming time.

Amazon India and TVS Motor Company today announced a strategic engagement to strengthen electric mobility, electric infrastructure and connected services. As part of this collaboration, a fleet of electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers from TVS Motor will be deployed for Amazon’s last-mile deliveries. In addition, the two companies will work in tandem to examine EV use cases for various Amazon business groups for its network and logistical requirements. In order to test solutions, the two companies will pilot TVS Motor’s electric vehicle solutions through partner base and delivery associates across India. “The collaboration marks another decisive step for Amazon to
