Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday welcomed the Supreme Court’s recent observation that it is the central government’s duty to ensure that foodgrains reach the last man under the National Food Security Act. He said the Rajasthan government has been demanding that the Centre expand the scope of the NFSA on the basis of the current population. “It is our culture that nobody goes to sleep empty stomach,” the Supreme Court said on December 6 and asked the central government to see to it that foodgrains under the NFSA reach the last man. The court was hearing on its own a public interest matter related to the plight of migrant workers during the COVID-19 pandemic and the resultant lockdowns. The number of women candidates winning the Gujarat Assembly polls rose marginally as 15 of them emerged victorious this time as compared to 13 in the last election. Out of the 15 winners, 14 belong to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while one is from the Congress. A total of 139 women candidates from different political parties and independents were in the fray this time. In 2012, the number of winning women candidates stood at 16. In the 2017 election, 13 women had won. But one of them died in December 2021, after which the seat fell vacant. This time, the BJP had given tickets to a total of 18 women, while the grand old party had fielded 14 such candidates. Some of these successful BJP women candidates attributed their victory to the hard work of party workers and the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and state BJP chief C R Paatil. BJP’s Sangita Patil, who won from Limbayat in Surat city, credited her victory to the page committee.

Food Security Act be expanded on the basis of the current population. It is the responsibility of every government to provide food to all citizens. The Rajasthan government provided food to all during the pandemic with the resolve that “no one should sleep hungry”, he said. “Even today there are about 900 Indira Rasoi operating in the state where a full meal is available for ₹ 8 in which the state government gives a subsidy of ₹ 17 per plate,” the chief minister said. The government notified the NFSA on September 10, 2013 with the objective of providing food and nutritional security by ensuring access to adequate quantity of quality food at affordable prices to people to live a life with dignity.

“Because of the ‘brahmastra’ of the page committee, party workers consulted every household. Thanks to that, BJP got this positive result in the entire state. The hard work of PM Modi, organisational skill of C R Paatil and developmental work of CM Bhupendra Patel also paid off,” she told. Bhanuben Babaria, who clinched the Rajkot Rural seat as a BJP nominee, hailed the hard work of party workers for the saffron outfit’s resounding victory. “People are happy with the way PM Modi is working in the country. They are experiencing peace and prosperity. People are happy with the leadership of (Union Home Minister) Amit Shah, C R Paatil and CM Bhupendra Patel,” she said. In the elections held on December 1 and 5, the BJP won 156 seats, 17 went to Congress and five to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

For Congress, BJP And AAP

The dominant images from Result Day for Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, and of the Delhi MCD election, were of BJP workers celebrating by distributing laddoos. The BJP scored a massive win in Gujarat. In the Delhi MCD polls, the saffron party put in an unexpectedly strong performance, but was ultimately defeated by the feisty Aam Aadmi Party by a narrow margin. The BJP’s victory in Gujarat is remarkable. The fact that after six terms in office, it was able to get an astonishing vote share of over 50% reveals its bludgeoning dominance in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state. The chemistry of Modi’s emotional connect with the Gujarati voter, combined with the split in the Opposition vote between the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party, proved to be overwhelming. ‘Moditva’ rules in Gujarat. The combination of Hindutva, development promises, service delivery and strong regional identity have coalesced in the Modi cult to create visceral loyalty to the PM’s persona. Posters and banners of Modi dominated the Gujarat skyline this time. The chant “Modi Modi” was heard at every BJP rally. This time, the BJP has not only consolidated its hold over central Gujarat, but also won in Saurashtra and South Gujarat, vanquishing AAP challengers in Surat. Two AAP heavyweights who had been expected to win, AAP state president Gopal Italia in Katargam, and Patidar leader Alpesh Kathiriya in Varachha Road have both lost. AAP chief ministerial face Isudan Gadhvi has also lost. The BJP’s Gujarat achievement is one that is rarely seen in democratic politics. The only comparable record is that of the Left Front in Bengal which in 2006 also won a three-fourths majority in its seventh successive election. The success of the BJP in Gujarat lies in the combination of the Modi personality cult, a formidable party machine and a hunger to fight zealously for every seat. The Congress has been decimated in Gujarat. It has fallen to its lowestever tally of a shocking 17 seats. After coming close to unseating the BJP in 2017, , the Congress was mysteriously missing in action this time, - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara invisible on the ground.

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Friday criticised the government’s November 2016 decision to demonetise highvalue currency notes, claiming the move did not meet the desired goals as cash in circulation and fake currency have gone up. The comment made in the Lok Sabha was vehemently countered by the BJP’s Nishikant Dubey who said the Reserve Bank of India took the ”big step” to eliminate corruption and terror financing which were ”rampant” under the Congress rule. Raising the issue during the Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, Chowdhury said cash in circulation increased from Rs 18 lakh crore in 2016 to Rs 31 lakh crore currently. Also, fake currency and deposits in Swiss banks have increased, he claimed. ”The health of the economy is in a bad shape because of demonetisation. Demonetisation was launched with the objective

Aspecial CBI court on Friday extended the judicial custody of Trinamool Congress strongman and the party’s Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal by another 14 days in connection with his alleged involvement in the multi-crore cattle smuggling scam in West Bengal. He will be presented in the same Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court again on December 22. On Friday, Mondal’s counsel surprisingly did not move any bail plea on behalf of this client. On Friday, CBI’s investigation officer, Sushanta Bhattacharya submitted the agency’s case diary in the matter to the court. After reading the case diary, the Judge of the special court, Rajesh Chakraborty expressed utter surprise over its contents and said that he had never come across such a thing in his 20 years of career as a judge. However, neither the judge or the agency’s investigation officer divulged what was mentioned in the case diary.

of bringing back black money and stopping fake currency and terrorism. But none of the objectives of demonetisation has been fulfilled,” Chowdhury said. Dubey countered Chowdhury saying RBI decided to go ahead with demonetisation to end the menace of terrorism, black money and fake currency. He also alleged that the Congress sides with the ”tukde tukde gang” those involved in corruption. On November 9, 2016, India demonetised the then prevailing high-value currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denomination with an aim to check black money, fake currency and terror financing.

Mondal’s counsel surprisingly did not move any bail plea on behalf of this client

Sushanta Bhattacharya informed the court that there is a hearing at the Calcutta High Court soon regarding a bail application of Mondal and on that day CBI will disclose the contents of the case diary there. “This is just the trailer and the actual cinema is yet to be released,” the CBI’s investigating officer said. Mondal’s counsel did not move the bail plea on behalf of his client. However, he moved two other pleas. The first was to revoke the CBI’s action of freezing the bank accounts of Bhole Byom Rice Mill in Birbhum district, where Mondal’s daughter Sukanya Mondal is a partner.

Agency News: Himachal Pradesh It may cause a fiscal catastrophe but the Himachal Pradesh win could have given the Congress a pan-India issue for pitching in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections — bringing back the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) nationwide. It was the OPS promise of the Congress that caught the fancy of the electorate in Himachal Pradesh, a state where government employees are the most influential section and hence, the issue was put on electoral test. The party’s star campaigner, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, promised in election rallies that the new Congress government would implement OPS in its first cabinet meeting. To the BJP’s charge that the promise was ‘financially unfeasible’, Vadra cited how OPS was being implemented in Congress-ruled Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. “OPS is definitely a major issue, not just in a few states but nationwide. In BJPruled states like Madhya Pradesh and others, employees want the

restoration of OPS. Himachal Pradesh result has shown the way. OPS will be a major plank for us in the run-up to 2024,” a senior Congress leader involved in the Himachal campaign told. He cited how the BJP’s stand on OPS remained ambivalent, with outgoing chief minister Jai Ram Thakur promising a committee to look into it while former BJP chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal openly backed the employees’ demand for OPS. Meanwhile, central BJP leaders kept citing the financial unviability of the scheme. It was the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government in 2003 that had done away with OPS to reduce the burgeoning pension liabilities of the government. The New Pension Scheme came into being from 2004. The former Planning Commission chief in the UPA era, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, also recently advocated that returning to OPS was not feasible fiscally and in fact remarked that “bringing back the old pension system is one of the biggest revdis (doles) that are now being invented”.

UP government intro- HP Polls: Nearly 93% duces award scheme winners crorepatis and 41% face criminal cases for OBC students Agency News: New Delhi

Agency News: Lucknow

The Uttar Pradesh government is introducing the Chief Minister’s Award Scheme for meritorious students from the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. The scheme will apply to OBC students (from Class 10th and 12th) studying in schools affiliated with the Uttar Pradesh Board. So far, the amount to be given under the scheme has not been specified. According to a state government spokesman, educational institutions will also be directed to submit a list of OBC students who can be made employable or financially self-reliant through computer training. or this, a budget proposal will be prepared so that more students benefit from the computer training scheme. There is also a proposal to digitally prepare students from backward classes for competitive examinations. The directions regarding the

aforementioned schemes have been issued by Narendra Kashyap, Minister of state for the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities and State Commission for Backward Classes. The Minister has ordered concerned officials to ensure that information regarding schemes for backward classes are circulated through social media as well. Meanwhile, the minister also directed the management of city-based Dr Shakuntala Mishra National Rehabilitation University to ensure that admissions on reserved seats are done more transparently. Notably, the varsity has reserved 50 percent of its seats for disabled students.

While nearly 93 per cent winning candidates in Himachal Pradesh Assembly polls are crorepatis, about 41 per cent have declared criminal cases against themselves, a report by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has revealed. Himachal Pradesh Election Watch and ADR have analysed the self-sworn affidavits of all 68 winning candidates in the Himachal Pradesh 2022 Assembly Elections. Out of the 68 winning candidates analysed in 2022, 28 winning candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves, while during Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections in 2017, 22 MLAs had declared criminal cases against themselves. As far as winning candidates with serious criminal cases is concerned, 12 winning candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves. The ADR report said that one winner

Congress secured a victory in Himachal Pradesh on one of its poll planks - bringing back the Old Pension Scheme. Pensioners constituted an important votebank for the hill state, which has approximately 2.5 lakh government employees. Another 1.90 lakh employees are now retired and receiving pensions. According to a Newslaundry report, despite the fact that only 55 lakh voters decide the fate of political parties, these active and retired government employees, along with their dependents, form a strong voter base. According to experts, the OPS was unsustainable. For one thing, pension liabilities would continue to rise because pensioners’ benefits increased year after year, just like salaries of existing employees, pensioners gained from indexation, or what

Democracy in Shambles: Abhishek on TMC Spokesperson’s Arrest After Bail in Gujarat Agency News: New Delhi Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Friday said the arrest of party spokesperson Saket Gokhale in Gujarat twice in three days shows that democracy “remains to be in shambles”. Hours after he secured bail from a metropolitan court on Thursday, Gujarat Police arrested Gokhale again in a case related to his tweet about the Morbi bridge collapse tragedy. “Gujarat Police arrests @ SaketGokhale twice in a span of three days, that too with the Model Code of Conduct still being in place!” Banerjee said. “Election Commission remains completely surrendered, continuously acting as a subservient to @BJP4India. Democracy remains to be in shambles!” he added. The BJP on Thursday retained power in Gujarat for a record seventh straight term, pulverising the opposition to secure the biggest majority ever in the state. Assembly elections were held in two phases in the western

state earlier this month. Gokhale had on December 1 tweeted a news clipping about information purportedly obtained through the Right to Information, claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Morbi after the bridge collapse cost Rs 30 crore. “RTI reveals that Modi’s visit to Morbi for a few hours cost Rs 30 cr. Of this, Rs 5.5 cr was purely for ‘welcome, event management, & photography’” Gokhale had tweeted. An FIR was registered against Gokhale on the charges of forgery and printing defamatory content, and he was arrested on December 6. The prime minister had visited Gujarat on November 1, a day after a colonial-era suspension bridge on the Machchu river in Morbi town collapsed, leaving 135 people dead.

As a result, the Union and state governments face a massive pension burden. The opposition can be explained by the points stated in a letter recently shot off the Cabinet Secretary by the federation of Central Government Employees’ Unions, which has called it a disaster for old and retiring employees. According to the federation, a Defence establishment official who retired recently after more than 13 years of service received only 15% of the assured pension he would have received under the OPS.
