Shiv Sena leader and former CM Uddhav Thackeray’s son Aaditya Thackeray has launched a scathing attack on the Eknath Shinde government over a proposal to build a theme park at Mahalaxmi Race Course, calling it “Khoke Sarkar” which works for builders’ commercial interests, not Mumbaikars.

Pointing out that the Mahalaxmi Race Course is an integral urban open space of Mumbai and part of every Mumbaikar’s lives, the former minister said the current dispensation wants to sell race course to commercial interests who want to monetise the city.

CPEC made Gwadar look attractive to Pakistan. But ‘development’ ringing hollow to local people People in Pakistan’s Gwadar are bearing the brunt for opposing the State’s policy to impose a development model under the ambitious China-Pakistan Economic Corridor that overlooks their concerns and apprehensions. They are being controlled in their own land. Over 2.6 lakh residents were locked inside their homes when they demanded their rights that are reportedly being compromised with the construction of the CPEC. For a long time, the people of Balochistan have opposed the infrastructure project, which would stretch from Gwadar Port in Balochistan to Xinjiang Province in western China. The adopted development policies are discriminatory and overlook the concerns and apprehensions of the local people. Till about a decade ago, Gwadar was a remote and insignificant area. It hardly figured in Pakistan’s political and economic calculations. It wasn’t even important for the Balochistan government. No attention was paid to the issues that the local people were facing. When China decided to develop the Gwadar Port for the ambitious CPEC, and the China Overseas Port Holding Company (COPH) acquired the port on lease in 2013 for 40 years, Gwadar attained significance for the Pakistan government. It became essential to address the country’s economic woes as it could attract foreign investment. But the rights and apprehensions of the local people were entirely overlooked. Assurances were given but not kept. The majority of the local population of Gwadar are involved in fishing. For decades, their livelihood has been threatened by illegal trawling in the area. With Beijing’s renewed focus on the region, Gwadar Port became more vulnerable. Despite the ongoing ‘development’ work, the local people’s basic issues remain unaddressed. While problems such as special fishing permits have been resolved, others like lack of provision of jobs, water and electricity facilities are still standing.

Amid talks of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir likely this year, BJP leaders and cadres have been instructed to prepare for the electoral process as the announcement in this regard is expected soon. Eknath Shinde vs Uddhav Thackeray: SC to Hear Case on February

Agency News: Mumbai

The Supreme Court on Tuesday scheduled the hearing of the matter arising out of the rebellion by Eknath Shinde and other MLAs against Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray in Maharashtra, on February 14.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the Thackeray faction, submitted before a five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud that the matter was urgent as the Election Commission was conducting proceedings on the issue of control over the party and the symbol. Sibal further argued that the court has to primarily decide the issue whether the 2016 five-judge judgement of the Nabam Rabia case should be referred to the seven-judge bench. The judgment restricted the power of the Speaker to decide disqualification petitions if a resolution seeking his removal was pending. The bench — also comprising Justices M.R. Shah, Krishna Murari, Hima Kohli, and P.S. Narasimha — fixed the matter for hearing on February 14. Senior

advocate Neeraj Kishan Kaul along with advocate Abhikalp Pratap Singh appeared for Eknath Shinde’s group of the Shiv Sena. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta represented the Governor. In August this year, a three-judge bench of the apex court had said that a five-judge constitution bench will hear a batch of petitions filed by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray faction on queries related to defection, merger, and disqualification. A three-judge bench of the apex court, in its reference order, had framed first issue whether notice for removal of a Speaker restricts him from continuing with disqualification proceedings under Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, as held by this court in Nebam Rabia.

The seven-party government in Bihar claims that the caste-based census will help to improve lives of people in the state. Reshma Prasad, the transgender leader of the state has, however, claimed that questioning the caste of a person is a crime. “Whenever caste becomes a talking point in society, they cannot discuss equality. As a result, inequality spreads in society. I firmly believe that the government has no right to ask the caste of a person. Who is the government to ask the caste of a person. If they are interested in the welfare of people, they should close the Special Marriage Act. Whoever talks about caste and religion, they are declared as communal persons. The government should clarify the parameters on which it is conducting a caste-based census in Bihar,” Prasad said. “The leaders here do not want Bihar

to move away from the casteism. However, there are many good leaders in Bihar who went ahead and did inter-caste and community marriages to break the casteist bonds,” she added. “If the castebased census is taking place in Bihar, it is considered a crime. It is not logical to make casteism alive in Bihar. It is against social equality and socialist values. The leaders of Bihar are just doing politics over the caste for years. When we are saying that we belong to transgender community, the government has put us under the OBC category which is based on caste,” she said.

Producer Anand Pandit who is looking forward to the release of his big budget Marathi horror comedy Victoria this year and is thrilled to be co-producing his first Kannada multistarrer Kabzaa has one resolution for 2023; to catch up on his reading. He says, I grew up at a time when electronic devices had not taken over our lives and there was time and space to read and absorb books at leisure. I still remember with great nostalgia, stories and novels by Dharamveer Bharti, Phanishwar Nath Renu, Munshi Premchand and Bhisham Sahni that were a part of my formative years. I hope to revisit them again and maybe film a few of them as they still mirror the social realities of our time. On World Hindi Day, Pandit shares his memories of the works of these

stalwart writers an says, One of my favourite stories by Phanishwar Nath Renu is Maare Gaye Gulfam which was filmed as Teesri Kasam in 1966 by Basu Bhattacharya. The story and the film so beautifully captured the doomed love between a bullock cart driver and a nautanki dancer. One common thing in the writers of that era was that they wrote rooted stories about Indias social realities.

Realty investments in alternate assets zoom past; 2022 Investment inflows in Indian realty up 20% YoY to USD4.9 bn: Colliers

Institutional investments in Indian real estate’s alternate asset classes touched a new high in 2022 at USD0.9 billion, accounting for 18% of the inflows during the year. Investments into alternate assets, which saw a hike of 92% YoY in investments during 2022, has jumped more than 4-fold since 2019.

Inflows have seen a sharp jump in 2022 as investors pumped in money into some of India’s emerging sectors like data centers, life sciences, etc. The growth of alternate sectors is led by investors looking to diversify their portfolio, given steady returns in some traditional asset classes.

Data centers accounted for about 52% of the investments in alternate assets, followed by others such as life sciences, holiday homes, hospitals, etc. However, the traction

in investments was seen largely in data centers, with the other segments witnessing scattered deals. While inflows in alternate assets peaked, inflows into the office sector continued its dominant streak in 2022 as well, accounting for 41% share in total inflows. Inflows into the sector rose 50% YoY led by some large deals. As investors eye building a portfolio that they can bundle up as REITs, they continue to see resilience in greenfield and ready-to-move assets. Majority of the deals in the office sector were driven by global investors, who are looking at income-yielding assets. Overall investments in Indian realty touched USD4.9 bn during 2022, registering a hike of 20% YoY. Institutional investors remain enthused by the potential of the Indian realty market, albeit in a cautious environment.
