117 acquitted by Haryana court

The factory workers allegedly set fire to the plant after getting into an argument with the management. They were later charged with conspiracy to commit murder, arson and rioting Agency | New Delhi After nearly five years of legal battle, 31 people were convicted Friday in Maruti Suzuki Manesar factory violence case and 117 were acquitted by Haryana court. They had been charged with conspiracy to commit murder, arson and rioting. The Gurgaon district was reportedly put on alert before the verdict. While nine of the accused workers are still behind bars, 139 are out on bail. Additional District and Sessions Judge R.P. Goel was expected to decide later on the quantum of punishment to the guilty — put in two categories

as per the charges proved against them. The incident of violence, which took place on July 18, 2012, began with an argument between workers and management. The matter soon got out of hand and the workers allegedly set fire to one of the floors. HR General Manager Awanish Kumar Dev was killed in the incident and several other executives were injured. The Maruti Suzuki plant suffered damage and the police later booked 147 workers in connection with the case. The factory workers allegedly set fire to the plant after getting into an

Supreme Court issues arrest warrant against Calcutta HC judge C S Karnan Agency | New Delhi

In an unprecedented order, the Supreme Court on Friday issued bailable warrants against serving Calcutta High Court judge C S Karnan to ensure his presence before it on March 31 in a contempt case. Justice Karnan goes down in the Indian judicial history as the first serving High Court judge against whom an arrest warrant has been issued by the apex court in a contempt case. A seven-judge bench headed by Chief Justice J S Khe-

har took strong note of Justice Karnan’s non-appearance despite being served with the contempt notice and asked the Director General of West Bengal Police to execute the warrants on the judge to ensure his presence at 10.30 AM on March 31. The court said it would “appreciate” if the bailable warrants are served on Justice Karnan by the DGP. “Notice of this

petition has been duly served. Despite service, wherein the personal presence of Shri Justice C S Karnan, in this Court, was imperative, he has neither entered appearance in person, nor through counsel,” the bench, also comprising Justices Dipak Misra, J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, M B Lokur, P C Ghose and Kurian Joseph, said. “In view of the above, there is no other alternative but to seek the presence of Shri Justice C S Karnan by issuing bailable warrants.

on February 23, 2015, that the Supreme Court granted bail to two of the 148 accused. Following the incident, the management of the plant terminated the services of 550 permanent and over 1,800 contract workers causing widespread outrage.

The flight which took off from the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai at 0700 hours, landed safely at London’s Heathrow Airport at 11.05 hours, the spokesperson said. This comes less than a month after a Jet Airways aircraft with more than 300 people on board was escorted by German Air Force planes after it lost contact with Air Traffic Control during a flight from Mumbai to London. The incident took place on February 16 in German air space. Fighter jets escorted the Boeing 777 aircraft.

Air India Plane Goes Off Radar Over Hungary, Escorted By Fighter Jet

An Air India passenger aircraft flying to London went off the radar for a few frightening moments while flying over Hungary, the airline said on Friday. The aircraft, which flew from Mumbai in the morning with 231 passengers and 18 crew members, had to be escorted by fighter jets after it lost contact with the Air Traffic Control while flying over Hungary. The Air India flight AI 171 lost contact with the Air Traffic Control due to “frequency fluctuation”, an Air India spokesper-

Bill to declare countries as ‘sponsor of terrorism’ withdrawn from Rajya Sabha (H.S.) | Jammu

The government on Friday disfavoured in the Rajya Sabha passing of any law to declare countries as ‘Sponsor of Terrorism’ after which a private member’s bill brought with Pakistan in mind was withdrawn. The ‘Declaration of Countries as Sponsor of Terrorism Bill’, moved by Independent member Rajeev Chandrashekhar, got support from several members cutting across party lines but the government said there was no need for such a legislation. The bill provided for declaring any country as State sponsor of terrorism

and withdrawing of economic and trade relations with such a country. It also provided for creating legal, economic and travel sanctions for citizens of such a country and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. After a debate, Minister of State for Home Gangaram Ahir said the government has taken many steps to deal with terror. “The existing laws already have sufficient provisions for dealing with citizens of a

terrorist country,” he said. Ahir asked Chandrasekhar to withdraw the bill which the Independent member did. Earlier, participating in the debate on the bill, Congress member Ananda Bhaskar Rapolu raised the issue of recent killing of an IT engineer Srinivas Kuchibhotla in the USA and said “The bereaved wife asked ‘whether I belong to this land?’ It has awaken the whole world.” Rapolu also mentioned a Kashmiri girl Insha Mushtaq who was blinded by pellets fired by security forces and still attended the school. Nominated member KTS Tulsi said,

“I am not opposed to the bill but I have my doubts. We need to examine the practical utility of declaring Pakistan as terror state.” Samajwadi Party member Javed Ali Khan said, “Though I support the Bill, it should also include Israel in the list as it is sponsoring terrorsim in the Middle East.” Supporting the Bill, YSRCP member Vijay Sai Reddy said Pakistan has dual policy on terrorism – bad terrorist and good terrorist. Those who attack Pakistani establishments are bad terrorists and those who attack Indians are good terrorists.

Jaitley, RBI officials draw up plans to deal with top defaulters (H.S.) | New Delhi

With the banking sector reeling under the impact of Rs 8 lakh crore stressed assets, the government and Reserve Bank of India on Friday drew up a plan to act on top defaulters. Sources told HT, finance minister Arun Jaitley discussed with RBI officials various options to deal with the menace of non-performing assets (NPAs) which was plaguing the banking system and preventing lenders from lowering interest rates. One of the alternatives that the government and RBI was considering for some time now was to set up of a “bad bank” to deal with the problem of non-performing

loans, as it has been suggested by chief economic adviser Arvind Subramanian. Reserve Bank Deputy Governor Viral Acharya had floated the twin concept of Private Asset Management Company (PAMC) and National Asset Management Company (NAMC) for resolution of stressed assets. Gross NPAs of public sector banks rose to Rs 6.3 lakh crore as against Rs 5.5 lakh crore at the end of the June quarter. Last month, Subramanian had said the idea of setting up a state-

owned asset reconstruction company (ARC) or bad bank to deal with mounting NPAs is gaining traction and needs to be created quickly. The PAMC plan, as suggested by Acharya, could be for sectors such as metals, construction, telecom, and textiles, where the assets will have economic value in the short run. As per the plan, the banking sector may be asked to restructure about 50 large stressed exposures in these sectors by December 31, 2017. The NAMC plan could be viable for sectors where the problem is not just of excess capacity but of economically unviable assets in the near term.

‘Lost’ since 2009, India’s Chandrayaan-1 found orbiting Moon, says NASA (H.S.) | New Delhi

India’s first lunar probe – the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft – which was considered lost, is still orbiting the Moon, NASA scientists have found by using a new ground-based radar technique. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) lost communication with Chandrayaan-1 on August 29, 2009, almost a year after it was launched on October 22, 2008. Now, scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in California have successfully located the spacecraft still circling some 200 kilometres above the lunar surface. “We have been able

to detect NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and the Indian Space Research Organisation’s Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft in lunar orbit with ground-based radar,” said Marina Brozovic, a radar scientist at JPL and principal investigator for the test project. “Finding LRO was relatively easy, as we were working with the mission’s navigators and had precise orbit data where it was located. Finding India’s Chandrayaan-1 required a bit

more detective work because the last contact with the spacecraft was in August of 2009,” said Brozovic. The Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft is very small, a cube about 1.5 meters on each side – about half the size of a smart car. Although the interplanetary radar has been used to observe small asteroids several million miles from Earth, researchers were not certain that an object of this smaller size as far away as the Moon could be detected, even with the world’s most powerful radars. Chandrayaan-1 proved the perfect target for demonstrating the capability of this technique.

Reliance Jio, Paytm have apologised for using PM Modi’s picture in ads, says Govt A political slugfest had erupted after Reliance Jio used the prime minister’s photograph in fullpage advertisements in September last year Agency | New Delhi

Reliance Jio Infocomm and Paytm have tendered apologies for using Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s picture in their respective advertisements without permission, the Government said on Friday. This comes a month after both the companies were served with notices by the government, asking them whether they had taken prior permission before using the prime minister’s photographs on advertise-

ments of their products. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public distribution had also earlier advised the ministry of information and broadcasting to sensitise the media on the need to obtain “prior permission” before commercial usage of specific emblems and names prohibited by the The Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act, 1950. “Clarifications were sought by the Department of Con-

Can Akhilesh Yadav buck Uttar Pradesh’s anti-incumbency trend? The animated poll narratives had a mix of divisive and development issues this time in Uttar Pradesh, which is eager to get rid of the ‘laggard state’ tag. But the debate on the recent trend of states returning incumbent chief ministers in the country for their good work was lost in the public spat over ‘shamshan’ and ‘kabaristan’. West Bengal and Tamil Nadu are recent examples where the Trinamool Congress and AIADMK were returned to power. Ever since the Congress lost its primacy over Uttar Pradesh, the state has not repeated the same party or chief minister in elections. But this time around, young chief minister Akhilesh Yadav has remained a major factor in the race, the other players being mighty Mayawati and popular Narendra Modi. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had been out of power for 14 years and was desperate to win UP - the adopted state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. But the regional forces - the SP and the BSP who had been alternately ruling the state -- posed major hurdles. The BJP high command and Amit Shah could corner the state governments headed by the SP and the BSP over their non-performance but he had to convince voters about his party’s sincerity to develop the state through good governance. As there was no visible work that the party could showcase in UP barring demonetisation, Shah flaunted states such as Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, which had returned their incumbent chief ministers Shivraj Singh Chauhan and Raman Singh. With pride, Shah described it as a reward for their good governance and promised to develop UP on the same lines. However, throwing a spanner in their efforts was Akhilesh Yadav, the young chief minister of the state, who had silenced his critics by executing big development projects over his five-year turbulent tenure. He often demanded to know if any other state in the country could show one project as big as the Metro Rail and Agra-Lucknow Expressway that they had completed in their tenure. While joining the debate, Akhilesh repeatedly told people about the prevailing trend of repeating chief ministers in the country. His one-liner was: “This election would prove if people voted for caste or for their aspirations.” He knew UP’s penchant for change rather than continuity in every election. The state has had 20 chief ministers since January 26, 1950 including political giants like Govind Ballabh Pant, Sampurnanad and CB Gupta. Of them, only five chief ministers could enjoy more than one term: Charan Singh, Narain Dutt Tiwari, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Mayawati and Kalyan Singh. Akhilesh’s concerns can be fathomed considering the fact that even the BJP national president was forced to showcase other BJP-ruled states than Uttar Pradesh.

Katrina Kaif was supposed to perform at an upcoming awards show, but that doesn’t seem to be working out anymore. The Dhoom 3 star has hurt her spine badly and has pulled out of the show. Kat was in the middle of rehearsals for the Zee Cine Aw a r d s when she felt a shooting pain in her neck. While initially the actor tried to brush it off as nothing major, the pain only got worse, reports Spotboye.com. Katrina had to cancel the rehearsals and see a doctor, who told her that she had injured her spine. The website received a

confirmation regarding the same from Katrina. “Yup it was an accident. Tried to work through the pain but wasn’t possible. Very sad,” she said. Katrina’s injury dates back to a week ago, when she was shooting for Anurag Basu’s upcoming film Jagga Jasoos. Katrina was hurt when a heavy object landed behind her. While the injury didn’t seem anything worrisome back then, seems like it has taken a turn for the worse, leaving Kat out of action for a while. The Phantom star was supposed to perform at the awards show on March 11. After she informed the organisers that she won’t be able to perform, Deepika Padukone was being considered to step in. However, said. now says that Kareena Kapoor Khan will be performing at the show instead of Katrina. Kareena told the daily, “This is the best phase of my life and it feels great to be back on the stage. I am sure the viewers will enjoy the act as much as I did rehearsing and performing it.” Kareena welcomed her first child, Taimur Ali Khan Pataudi, with Saif Ali Khan in December last year. The actor was back to work in exactly 46 days after Taimur’s birth when she walked the ramp at a fashion show. While all Bollywood lovers are excited to see Bebo perform on the stage, here’s hoping Katrina Kaif is back on her feet in no time!

Ram Gopal Varma Posts Apology Of Sorts For Sunny Leone Tweet Agency | New Delhi

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has now apologized, kind of, for his tweets aimed at actress Sunny Leone on International Women’s Day. On Thursday night, RGV tweeted: “Was just expressing my feelings but I apologise to all who were offended due to my unintended insensitive tweets in context of women’s day.” He added a disclaimer that the apology was only for the ones who were “genuinely offended” and not for the ones “who ranted for publicity or threatened to take law into their hands.” On March 8, Ram Gopal Varma posted several tweets that were criticized as sexist. In particular, his tweets about Ms Leone provoked outrage and a police complaint. Sunny Leone, 35, has not addressed the matter or RGV directly. In

a video posted a video on Twitter, she says simply,”One must choose their words wisely.” A crescendo of tweets from Ram Gopal Varma on Women’s Day ended with this: “I wish all the women in the world give men as much happiness as Sunny Leone gives.” He was immediately inundated with angry responses. Social activist Vishakha Mhabrey filed a police complaint in Goa and demanded that the director’s Twitter account be blocked, said. Unperturbed, RGV tweeted that he would file a counter complaint against the activist. He also tweeted, “The negative noise towards my tweet on Sunny Leone arises from ultimate hypocrisy. She has more honesty and more self-respect than any women.”

Actress Sonam Kapoor prefers not to react to filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma’s tweet about Sunny Leone. “I can’t comment on Ram Gopal Varma. We have better things to talk about. I would not dignify that with an answer,” Sonam said at the opening of Raw Mango store here on Thursday. Adding to that, actress Konkona Sen Sharma, who was also present at the event, said though she isn’t aware of the tweet, she doesn’t appreciate any sexist comment.”I have not seen this particular tweet. But I don’t appreciate any-

body making any sexist remark,” Konkana said. Varma, who is not new to social media feuds, on International Women’s Day, tweeted: “I wish all the women in the world give men as much happiness as Sunny Leone gives.” After receiving flak, he said he was “just expressing my feelings”. In a series of tweets, he said, “Was just expressing my feelings but I apologise to all who were offended due to my unintended insensitive tweets in context of women’s day. My apology is only to those who genuinely got offended and not to those who ranted for publicity nd threatened to take law into their hands.” Meanwhile, Sunny Leone addressed the controversy that sparked after the filmmaker posted the controversial tweet. Without mentioning his name, Sunny, through a small video, conveyed her take on the controversy. “I read all news today. I believe change only happens when we have one voice. So, choose your words wisely,” the former adult star said.

You can take your time to lose that weight. But you need to come to terms with the fact that your body is going to be different for a certain amount of time and it’s not permanent. Netflix inks pact with Airtel, Videocon d2h, Vodafone to ramp up presence in Indian market

With an aim to ramp up its presence in the Indian market, digital streaming service Netflix has said it has partnered with Airtel, Videocon d2h and Vodafone. The US-based firm, which is up against strong competition from rivals like Amazon Prime, HotStar and others in the Indian market, is investing aggressively in local content. ”India is one of the most important and we are delighted to be teaming up with three of India’s leading companies. The partnerships with Airtel and Videocon d2h is for set top boxes while the Vodafone partnership is for payment integration,” Netflix Co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings told reporters here. Adding that the growth in consumption has also been driven by free data offering from new-comer Reliance Jio, Hastings said Netflix is in discussion with many other players in India for partnerships. Hastings, on his maiden trip to India, said the company has seen strong adoption of its services since its launch in the country in January last year. “We have a strong growth here (India), stronger than all the other Asian nations (except China, where Netflix is not present)... We are investing heavily on content.

Pakistan Parliament passes landmark Hindu Marriage Bill Agency | Chennai

Pakistan’s Parliament has finally passed the much-awaited landmark bill to regulate marriages of minority Hindus in the country. Pakistan’s Hindus were set to get an exclusive personal law to regulate marriages after the National Assembly unanimously adopted the Hindu Marriage Bill, 2017, on Thursday. The law was passed after a lengthy process of enactment. It was the second time that the National Assembly passed the bill. It passed the bill in September last year but had to pass it again as its version of bill was changed by the Senate when it adopted the bill in February. As per rules, the same text should be passed by the two Houses of the Parliament before it is sent to the President for his signatures and promulgation for implementation. Dawn News reported that the Senate included an amendment to the draft approved by the National Assembly in September. The final text approved by both houses includes the Shadi Parath — a document similar to ‘Nikahnama’ in Muslims.

SPORTS ROUNDUP IPL 2017: Glenn Maxwell To Lead Kings XI Punjab, Replaces Murali Vijay Agency | New Delhi

(H.S.) | Ranchi

With what could be called an enthralling Test series, there is one factor which hasn’t appealed the cricket fraternity in an otherwise incredible encounter. That one reason is nothing else but the fact that none of the matches have lasted the entire 5 days. While the first match lasted only three days, the second match was concluded much before the end of Day 4. If Virat Kohli was asked to give his opinion on what he dislikes most about the ongoing series against Australia, the chances are India`s captain would bemoan the introduction of three new test venues across the four matches. The showdown between the world`s top two teams kicked off with a debut test at Pune`s Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, where

Ahmedabad

Australia beat India`s spinners at their own game to end a 19-match unbeaten streak dating back to late 2015. On a pitch which subsequently earned a “poor rating” from the match referee, Steve O`Keefe and Nathan Lyon combined to punch holes in the popular perception that Indian batsmen were the masters of spin as Australia won by a whopping 333 runs. Back in the friendlier and familiar confines of the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Kohli`s men prevailed in a four-day slugfest marked by verbal volleys

and animated send-offs to level the series with a 75-run victory. Kohli has established a reputation as a man of many emotions and anxiety is likely to be the most dominant of them when he looks ahead to next week`s third test in Ranchi, another venue making its international debut in the longest format. “We can`t do much about the Ranchi pitch, you know how it`s always been,” the 28-year-old said after the victory in Bengaluru, effectively conceding any thoughts of a `home advantage` when the rivalry resumes.

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been named as the skipper of Kings XI Punjab for the upcoming season of Indian Premier League (IPL) season 10 starting April 5, the franchise announced on its official Twitter handle. The mercurial Aussie player has replaced Indian batsman Murali Vijay, who was appointed captain midway through the last season. Vijay had taken over the captain’s role last season after David Miller was sacked as skipper for the team’s dismal performance. However, that did not change the team’s fortune as it finished last for the second successive season. The management has preferred Maxwell over the likes of Eoin Morgan, who captained England to the 2016 World T20 final, and Darren Sammy, who led the West Indies to two

World T20 titles. Maxwell, who is currently in India with the Australian Test squad, had relatively quiet last two editions of the IPL, scoring 324 runs in 22 games. Maxwell, who has never captained in the 338 matches he has played across all formats, was instrumental in taking the team to its maiden IPL final in 2014. He had played two matches for Delhi Daredevils in 2012 and then three matches for Mumbai Indians in 2013. He then joined Kings XI

in the next season and had a breakthrough season with 552 runs at an average of 34.5 and a strike rate of 187.75. Kings XI will also have a new second home this season where they will play three matches at the Holkar Stadium in Indore while the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium in Mohali will stage the remaining home games. Kings XI will start their campaign against Rising Pune Supergiants on April 8 in Indore.

Hockey India announces 33 core probables David Saker to replace Darren Lehmann as head for Senior men’s national camp Agency | New Delhi

Hockey India (HI) on Friday announced a 33-member core probables list for the national camp, which will commence at the Sports Authority of India in Bengaluru from March 14. The national camp under chief coach Roelant Oltmans includes as many as 11 players from the last year’s gold medal junior World Cup winning squad. The junior team players were also incredible at the recently-concluded Hockey India League (HIL), where they held their nerves against some of the world’s best hockey stars. While Mandeep Singh, Harjeet Singh, Harmanpreet Singh and Vikas Dahiya have been part of the se-

Ind vs Aus: Hardik Pandya released, India retain 15 for last 2 Tests Agency | Bengaluru

All-rounder Hardik Pandya, who did not feature in the playing XI in the first two Tests in Pune and Bangalore, was yesterday released from the Indian squad with the selectors retaining other 15 members for the remaining two games against Australia in Ranchi (March 16-20) and Dharamsala (March 2530). Pandya will play for Baroda in the quarter-finals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the domestic

one-day tournament. Pandya was released during the first Test also and he played three league games. With the Ranchi wicket expected to be on the slower side,

there is very little possibility of Pandya making the cut in the playing XI. Opener Murali Vijay, who has suffered a shoulder injury missing the second Test match has been kept in the squad of 15 and is expected to get fit before the start of the third Test. Assistant coach David Saker will take charge of Australia for their oneday international tour of India later this year, allowing head coach Darren Lehmann to take a break. Australia’s coaching set-up has seen former cricketers take turns to fill in for Lehmann, who recovered from deep vein thrombosis last year after being hospitalised for the condition. “It’s a huge honour to be even considered to be a coach of an Aus-

tralian team, and to be given the opportunity is fantastic,” Saker, who has also worked as England’s bowling coach, was quoted as saying on Cricket Australia’s website. “I’m going to look forward to it a lot, and my ambition is to coach Australia.” The Australia test side are involved in an ongoing four-match series in India which is tied at 1-1 after two tests, while the final details of the one-day international tour, pencilled in for October, have yet to be confirmed.

Patel’s letter then enlists a chronology of events pertaining to the construction of the bridge Correspondent | Vadodara

A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new cable bridge over the Narmada in Bharuch, senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Ahmed Patel on Wednesday shot a letter to Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways & Shipping Nitin Gadkari, pointing out to “a brazen attempt to mislead the people of Gujarat”, and urging Gadkari to “set the record straight” in the matter. Patel, referring to Gadkari’s speech at the inauguration of the cable bridge on March 7, said, “The speech claimed that after your appointment as the Union Surface Transport Minister in May 2014,

you terminated a previous contract to build this bridge due to non-performance and issued a fresh tender at a significantly lower price. I am sorry to state, this claim of yours is divorced from the truth.” Patel’s letter then enlists a chronology of events pertaining to the construction of the bridge. Patel’s letter refers to an earlier sequence of correspondence with Gadkari regarding the facts of the bridge and

says, “I have always held you in high esteem and hence, I am disappointed by your altering of facts to suit a political agenda. The Prime Minister’s rich track record of relying on half truths seems to have had a profound influence on you. We are guided by a sense of duty towards people, and this should not be distracted by any political agenda. I would be grateful if this record could be set straight.”
