Army vows to punish killers of young Kashmiri Lieutenant Umer Fayaz

Agency | New Delhi

The Army on Wednesday vowed to punish the killers of young Kashmiri Lieutenant Umer Fayaz+ while defence minister Arun Jaitley called the attack a dastardly act of cowardice by the terrorists. The bullet-riddled body of 22-year-old Fayaz+ was found in Harmen area of Shopian in South Kashmir on Wednesday morning, hours after he was abducted by terrorists from Batpura village where he had gone to attend his cousin’s wedding. “I assure the family that the perpetrators of this heinous crime and dastardly act will not be spared,” Lt Gen Abhay Krishna, General Officer Commanding-in Chief of South Western Command and Colonel of Rajputana Riffles, said. Fayaz, hailing from Kulgam in

South Kashmir, was with Rajputana Rifles and had taken leave to attend the wedding. He was commissioned into the Army on December 10 last year and according to his colleagues, he was popular for his simplicity and honesty. Expressing anguish over the killing of the young officer, Jaitley said Fayaz’s sacrifice reiterates the nation’s commitment to eliminate terrorism from the valley and that he would continue to inspire youth from Kashmir. ”Abduction & murder of Lt Umer Fayaz

by terrorists in Shopian is a dastardly act of cowardice+ . This young officer from J&K was a role model,” Jaitley said in a tweet. “Fayaz was an exceptional sportsman, his sacrifice reiterates nation’s commitment to eliminate terrorism from the valley.” Lt Gen Krishna said people of Kashmir will have to rise collectively and hit back at the “cowards and perpetrators” of the heinous crime, adding they can no longer tolerate such tragic losses of their “beloved sons”. “This marks a wa-

tershed moment in Kashmir valley and people of Kashmir will decisively turn the tide against terrorism,” he said, conveying to family of Fayaz that the Army stands shoulder-to-shoulder with it. It was for the first time that he had taken leave after joining the Army, a senior official said. He was supposed to have returned to his unit in the Akhnoor area of Jammu on May 25. The killing caused anger among locals who demanded that the men responsible be identified and punished. Army officers posted with Rajputana Riffles said Fayaz was loved by his colleagues and he was known for immaculately performing alloted tasks His father, a farmer, has a small time apple business. Fayaz was part of the hockey team of NDA and he was also an excellent volleyball player.

Baahubali’s technical finesse is a vehicle for regressive socio-political values In mainstream cinema, a film can be path-breaking in two ways. It can have a genuinely moving, provoking narrative, or a kind of humour and insight that is, if not unprecedented, certainly rare. Such a film has to be superbly written, directed and acted and the chord it strikes with its audience stays with them long after the film is over. The sound, camera and editing come together to bring out a story in novel ways. Its themes will stay relevant after its context seems dated and its plot points become archetypes for generations of filmmakers and aficionados. But there is another kind of greatness as well. When the craft of cinema is, for its time and place, elevated to an art. S.S. Rajumouli’s two-part epic comes close to films in this category. There is a breadth of vision, technical finesse and sheer grandeur to Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali: The Conclusion that is unprecedented in recent Indian cinema. It reflects the confidence of the film-maker: His audience is going to watch the film on a big screen. The actors, while well-known, were not famous enough to guarantee the kind of revenues it has generated worldwide. Most of all, the film is able to transcend substantially the context of the language it was shot in. There is, however, a problematic aspect to the film; in the vehicle for the special effects extravaganza — the actual plot. Like James Cameron’s Avatar, The Baahubali films have a cliche story, one which is easy to relate to and lets the audience enjoy the images on screen while being led gently along a path that is as familiar and comfortable as the ratty T-shirt you’ve had since college. Also like Cameron’s masterpiece, they have an unmistakable social and political context. Avatar rehashed the Pocahontas (Disney version) story — a white man among the natives finds love and wisdom and turns against the tyranny of his own people. In the context of colonialism, discourses on global warming, ecology and land rights, the film had a progressive undertone. In his choice of cliche, Rajumouli went the other way. Like so many other epics in the Subcontinent, and beyond, Baahubali takes place in and upholds a socio-religious order that serves a particular politics. While somewhat critical, if tangentially, of the indentured servitude of Katappa, one of the films’ main characters, it does nothing to actually free him. Even the genie in Disney’s Aladdin was liberated by the eponymous hero, but no such luck for (the elder) Baahubali’s self-proclaimed “mama”. In both films, the depiction of the “love interest” is also questionable: Strong, independent women become pativrata for life once they realise our hero is strong enough to protect them. There is the worrying, almost offensive depiction of the tribal villains — the Kalakeya — in Baahubali: The Beginning and the hero’s almost sadistic brutality masquerading as brilliant battle strategy, while those of his opponents is depicted as savagery. The complex (especially to a north Indian viewer like this author) but blatantly “Hindu” and upper caste motif of the films, evolves in interesting ways.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“The Pakistani soldiers beheaded Indian soldiers, they mutilated their bodies so badly. No one is debating or discussing that. You didn’t tell which body parts were mutilated, you are not debating on that. We have seen martyrs from Bihar, UP, MP, Jharkhand and south Indian states. But why no martyrs from Gujarat? - Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, on Wednesday, courted controversy after he said that there were “no martyrs from Gujarat” while there were martyrs from UP, Bihar, Jharkhand and MP. Responding to his statement, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said it was a ‘cheap political view’. “I think Akhilesh Ji’s statement is an effect of frustration after loss in UP polls, its a cheap political view,”

Sachin: A Billion Dreams | AR Rahman has THIS special connect with ‘Sachin Sachin’ anthem Agency | Mumbai It was like walking into the stadium where Sachin Tendulkar was performing magic with his bat as the crowd cheered and chanted his name, and not the hotel in Mumbai where the song was being launched. You just had to close your eyes to be transported back in time to Sachin creating magic with his bat with the chant of ‘Sachin-Sachin...’ reverberating around the stadium. The atmosphere at the launch of the second song by AR Rahman from the upcoming biopic Sachin: A Billion Dreams was not unlike a cricket match. The first song from the album Hind Mere Jind had already raised expectations. When the song was played, the effect was electrifying! As the song ended, the invitees and audience picked up the chant and it was only when Sachin accompanied by Rahman came on to the stage that the auditorium became quiet. They were joined by the director James Erskine, the producers Ravi Bhagchandka of 200 Not Out and Dr. Shrikant Bhasi of Carnival Pictures, lyricist

Irshad Kamil, distributor Anil Thadani and Shikha Singhi from Junglee Music, Fielding questions from the media, Sachin said, “The chants were my supporters’ way of showing their love. I have been inspired by their chant and it has helped me face difficult situations on the field knowing that I have the country with me. I admire the way that Rahman has created an inspirational anthem around this chant.” Speaking on his composition, Academy Award winner AR Rahman said, “It was a challenge to compose music that would recreate the energy and mood that permeated the stadium when Sachin Tendulkar played cricket! I hope that this musical ode to fans of Sachin matches up to Sachin’s magical performances on the field. Creating the soundtrack for

the film has been a memorable experience.” Ravi Bhagchandka said, “Even if I was sitting at home and watching Master play, I used to get goosebumps on hearing the chant go around the stadium. Today when I heard the song, I got the same feeling. I am thankful to Rahman for creating this ode to the fans of Sachin. Rahman has created musical magic and has beautifully woven in the chants of “Sachin..., Sachin...” with music to create a stirring anthem.” Just when everyone though that the evening had come to an end, there was a surprise in the wings! Sukhwinder Singh, the popular Bollywood singer, who has sung ‘Sachin... Sachin...’ came on stage to regale the audience with a live rendition of the song!

Bollywood divas Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone made their debut at Met Gala 2017, and though both represented India and made everyone proud — there’s always a comparison that accompanies the two stars. While fashion police, international magazines and even Twitterati voted for Quantico star Priyanka Chopra for her bold and ‘sexy detective’ appearance, it seems she lost the race on Google. Yes, as far as Goggle trends are concerned it’s Serena Unger from xXx: Return of Xander Cage that has made it to the Top 5! Google Trends released the top most googled Met Gala dresses and it was Padukone and not Chopra who made it to the fifth spot. Padukone had chosen a classy, satin ivory slip gown by Tommy Hilfiger, with a plunging neckline for her special Red carpet appearance. While the actor managed to look her elegant self, her ensemble failed to make a mark. While people loved her make-up with winged eyeliner and nude lips’ by Georgie Eisdell, they were not happy with her hairdo. With hair styled by Harry Josh, the Padmavati star had accessorised her look with diamond danglers for her ears and a hairband with embellished hair accessory. Many felt the embellished flowers’ hair accessory that she flaunted seemed jarring. Will it seem, even though Chopra’s trench coat swept all the praises, Padukone’s simple and chic appearance made her mark after all.

So I planned a two-day trip to Mumbai with my son to attend his concert. I didn’t want to send him alone. My son is studying at Modern School, Barakhamba Road, and there are around 100 students from the school who are here to attend Bieber’s concert. Shashank Manohar To Complete Term As ICC Chairman

The 59-year-old had stepped down from the position in March this year for personal reasons. Agency | New Delhi

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday confirmed that Shashank Manohar will continue as its Chairman until the end of his elected term which is June 2018. The 59-yearold had stepped down from the position in March this year for “personal reasons”. However, he was persuaded by the Full Members and Associates to continue as the Chairman. According to a report in ESPN Cricinfo, Manohar has once again been persuaded by similarly overwhelming support from a collection of Full Members, who were keen for him to finish the process of reforms he has begun. ”The International Cricket Council (ICC) today confirmed Shashank Manohar will continue to function as the Independent Chairman of ICC until the end of his elected term which is June 2018,” the ICC said in a statement. al Conference in June this year but very recently he has had a change of heart. The Nagpur lawyer now has a strong ground after both the proposed new revenue and governance models received overwhelming support. The only obstruction came from the BCCI, who have lost support in the global cricket body. The BCCI brass believes that it is because of Manohar that the richest cricket body has missed out a significant portion of the revenue pie. According to BCCI’s Committee of Administrators (COA), the governance model is a bigger cause of concern rather

than revenue model. As per the website, Manohar completing his full term also puts paid to the hopes ECB president Giles Clarke, who was also eyeing the independent chairman’s post. The surprise move by Manohar had come in March during the India- Australia Test series, shortly after the ICC was embroiled in a controversy when it refused to take any action against Australian captain Steve Smith in the ‘brain fade’ issue in the Bengaluru Test. That decision was criticised by several former and current players, including Sunil Gavaskar and South African Faf du Plessis.

When Jhulan Goswami took the wicket of South Africa’s Raisibe Ntozakhe in the Women’s Quadrangular one-day match at Potchefstroom on Tuesday, she made history by breaking the world record for the most wickets in 50-over international cricket in the women’s game. Fast bowler Goswami, 34, surpassed the record of 180 wickets, previously held by the Australian fast bowler Cathryn Fitzpatrick for nearly ten years. Fitzpatrick, in her time, was regarded as the fastest female bowler in the world. Therefore it is fitting that her record was broken by a player of similar pedigree. When Fitzpatrick retired in 2007, Goswami took on the title of being one of the quickest bowlers in the women’s game and

has been India’s spearhead for years now. Standing tall at 5’11”, Goswami uses her height to generate good bounce. She is also known for her accuracy and ability to maintain that consistently over long spells. Hailing from a middle-class family in Chakdaha, a small town in West Bengal’s Nadia district, Goswami started off by playing tennis-ball cricket with the boys. As her love for the game grew, she realised that she needed to take her cricket education a step further. Since her hometown lacked basic cricket facilities at the time, she had no option but to travel to Kolkata. In her teens, for three days in a week, she would catch a 5am train from Chakdaha to Sealdah in Kolkata, and then catch a bus to cricket practice by 7.30am. After 9.30, it was another two-hour trek

back to her hometown to report to school. This arduous four-hour journey on a jam-packed inter-city train, Goswami recalled, toughened her up mentally. She soon made it to the Bengal women’s team and at 19, she made her India debut, in a one-day international against England in Chennai. She has taken five or more wickets in an innings twice in her career. Her 5 for 16 in Silchar in 2005 sunk England to 50 all out.

head-to-head lead in the IPL against KXIP and were unbeaten for a record eight matches against them. So KXIP was a team that KKR would have fancied beating, and putting to rest all doubts over their qualification for the play-offs. But the Punjab bowlers ensured that was not to be and now with this loss, Kolkata have lost three of their last four matches. So as things stand, KKR would have to beat Mumbai Indians in their last match to make themselves safe.

The Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) has retained Sanjay Bangar, the batting coach, and R Sridhar, the fielding coach, for the upcoming Champion Trophy in England next month, the Indian Express reported on Wednesday (May 10). The contracts of the support staff had ended in March earlier this year and were supposed to be up for discussion in June. “It is decided that the support staff will remain the same at the Champions Trophy with the only change being Kapil Malhotra taking over as manager,” Amitabh Choudhary, the BCCI acting secretary, told the English daily. “Bangar and Sridhar have been asked to extend their services for the duration of the tournament and then it will be decided what needs to be done.” The Committee of Administrators (CoA)

have advocated for having contracts for all the support staff and that’ll mean they can’t be part of any Indian Premier League franchises. While Bangar isn’t associated with any IPL franchise at the moment, Sridhar works with Kings XI Punjab and Andrew Leipus, chief physio at the National Cricket Academy, works with the Kolkata Knight Riders. The idea to end the contracts in March permits the support staff to work with the IPL franchises, but if things go the CoA’s

way, the support staff will be contracted for a full 12 months and not 10. Bangar was first appointed batting coach in August 2014 and worked for nearly two years with the Indian team. Abhay Sharma took over the responsibility for the tour to Zimbabwe last year, but Bangar was subsequently reappointed since the four-Test series in West Indies. Sridhar, too, like Bangar, had started his stint under Ravi Shashtri, the team director then, in 2014.

shooters informing the authorities that they had the requisite export documents, which had been signed and stamped by customs when they left for Plzen, the equipment was not released. “When we went to Plzen, the same department had issued us letters with their stamp and serial numbers of our guns. We have the same guns and the letters. We

don’t have even a screw extra, but they don’t trust their own letters,” added the shooter. Sources in customs denied that the shooters were detained, but said the weapons had to be cleared. They said extra caution was being taken after a few national shooters were recently arrested for smuggling illegal pistols. When asked about the delay in clearance, additional commissioner at IGIA, Amandeep Singh said they were waiting for the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence for the same. “We had to clear some things with the revenue department and hence the delay in clearing the shoot-

ers’ guns,” Singh said. The shooters claimed that an official used foul language and was rude throughout. “We were sleep deprived and hungry .When we told this to the officer there, he said, `You won’t die if you skip one meal’.” Asked about the claim that an officer was rude to the shooters, Singh said, “I got to know this from a few shooters there. I have told my staff to handle them with care.” A few shooters also missed their connecting flights to different cities due to the delay.”We have a World Cup in Munich, which will start from May 17. Every day counts for us now. Today’s day has

been wasted and this is going to hurt our preparation,” the shooter said. In a series of tweets, Beijing Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra blamed the National Federation of India for not coming to shooters’ rescue. “Saddened to hear that the national shooting team is detained at IGI airport with the customs refusing to clear their guns,” he tweeted, adding, “They are our country’s ambassadors and should not be treated like this. Would this ever happen to our cricket team?” “Lack of support ... from the national federation is pathetic.

IPL 2017: Kolkata Knight Riders’ habit of choking Bangar, Sridhar retained for Champions Trophy Agency | Mumbai at the fag end has come back to haunt them Agency | Chandigrah

Kolkata Knight Riders had, in the last two editions of the Indian Premier League (IPL), played like champions for most part, only to slip up at the business end of the tournament. In 2015, they found themselves at the top of the table, but miraculously missed a playoff berth after losing two matches on the trot. In 2016, they climbed to the pole position again on the back of four wins from six away matches, and needed just two wins from their last five matches to seal a spot in the play-offs. But they huffed and puffed and made it difficult for themselves, leaving it as late as their last group match and scraped through to the knockouts. This year, it doesn’t seem to be any different. KKR had hardly gone out of the top two places for the entirety of the

tournament, and one would have expected them to have qualified for the play-offs hands down and with a lot to spare, but old habits die hard. The Kolkata franchise, which had been in sublime form for most of the tournament is facing a deceleration of sorts at the fag end again. On Tuesday, Kolkata Knight Riders lost by 14 runs to Kings XI Punjab, a team that they had almost always got the better of. Before the match on Tuesday evening, KKR had a 14-6

With Reliance Jio 4G services having cemented its place in the Indian telecom market, all eyes are on the company’s upcoming JioFiber home broadband services. The Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) service was mentioned by Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani when the Jio operations were officially launched in September last year, and was again mentioned in an earnings call in April. The company has been teasing the service, but has not revealed many details of JioFiber broadband yet. So it comes as a surprise when the Reliance Jio customer care team officially revealed the names of the cities in which JioFiber trials are being run. Replying to a Twitter user from @JioCare handle, the Reliance Jio customer care team said the JioFiber Preview Offer is being launched in Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Ahmedabad, Jamnagar, Surat, and Vodadara. It added the company is in the process of rolling out the home broadband service to other cities in the country, but did not specify any names. A Twitter user in September had said the preview offer is available in Pune as well. Several users who have had early access to the JioFiber Preview Offer have tweeted about the service in the past.

Administrative wrangling, official apathy, an absent customs commissioner at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport and general ignorance about shooting led to over 15 international Indian shooters being held up for almost 13 hours on Tuesday. Olympic shooters Gurpreet Singh and Kynan Chenai, along with some 15 other colleagues, landed in the capital early in the morning after participating in the Plzen Shooting Grand Prix (in Czech Republic) and shotgun World Cup in Cyprus, respectively. They found themselves in a fix as the customs

department did not clear their guns till 4.50pm. “We landed at 4am after a 20-hour flight and the department didn’t clear our weapons, saying we would have to wait for the customs commissioner. He was supposed to arrive at 10am but didn’t and we didn’t get any clarity from other officials,” said a shooter who didn’t wish to be name.Despite the

ACB opposes Dr Mansukh Shah’s bail plea Agency | Chennai

The anti-corruption bureau (ACB), on Tuesday, opposed bail application of cash-for-marks scam accused and founder of Sumandeep Vidyapeeth, Dr Mansukh Shah, saying that investigations and inquiries against him were going on at various fronts. The agency told the court that apart from independent investigations by Enforcement Di-

Deputy chief minister Nitin Patel, who also holds finance portfolio, told the house that Gujarat, predominantly engaged in manufacturing activities, would lose some tax income after the rollout of the new indirect tax regime under GST. He further said that the five-year compensation offered from the Centre should suffice to compensate the projected losses. Ratification of the new

bill in state assemblies is mandatory for the rollout of GST from 1 July, 2017. The existing Value Added Tax (VAT) Act will now be withdrawn. However, indirect tax in the form of VAT will continue to be levied on petroleum products such as petrol, diesel, crude oil, natural gas, liquor and aviation turbine fuel (ATF). “GST will abolish all the taxation-related disputes between states and this will make Indian economy more strong. After implementation of GST, the state will lose some tax income, but the Centre has agreed to provide 14% compensation for the next five years,” Patel said in his address to the house.

But instead of just selling the liquor in Daman, Patel preferred selling the liquor to bootleggers in Gujarat for a premium. They could place their orders on a WhatsApp number. And his men would deliver, without fail. The liquor would be smuggled into Gujarat in big transport vehicle, usually a trailer truck with

a shipping container loaded on it. It would cross the Daman-Gujarat border on the basis of forged invoices of genuine manufacturing entities. Gujarat has been a dry state, right from the 1960s when the state was carved out of Mumbai. It had continued with the prohibition policy, emulated later by some other states including Nagaland and Bihar. Enforcement Directorate has seized lakhs of bottles of liquor from warehouses in Daman that were allegedly going to be smuggled into Gujarat.

In Gujarat, it’s been a week of embarassments for Cong, BJP

Sunvilla News | Gandhinagar

A mere two days after Shankersinh Vaghela reportedly walked out of a meeting with Rahul Gandhi, posters backing the Gujarat Congress leader have come up in Vadodara and other places in the State. The posters suggest that ‘Bapu’ will be the next Chief Minister after the Assembly polls later this year, regardless of which party — the Congress or the BJP — wins. Put up by people identifying themselves as Amo, Gauravvanta Gujaratiyon (we, the proud Gujaratis), the posters, which feature Vaghela sitting on a decorated chair, claim Jan-Jan Na Hit Ma Bapu Ni Sarkar (in public interest, the government of Bapu will come to power). This has left the Congress red-faced, even

though Vaghela has been keeping the party leadership on tenterhooks for a while now. Interestingly, the former Union Minister ruled himself out of the chief ministerial race earlier in the year, but Vaghela’s supporters have been running a social media campaign rooting for him. Last Saturday, Vaghela had exited the meeting on poll preparations called by Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi. He even skipped a group photo session of the core committee members with the Congress Vice-President. ‘Bapu’ was reportedly unhappy as his demand, to be named either the party’s CM candidate or as the election in-charge of the State, was “ignored.” Later, Bharatsinh Solanki, the Gujarat Congress chief said the party would not have a CM face.
