Six tribal children die of mysterious disease in Gujarat Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

Six children, in the age group of two to 11 years, have died of a mysterious disease in the tribal region of Banaskantha district of Gujarat in the last three weeks. According to the authorities, the children had throat infection, high fever and bouts of unconsciousness. All of them were from Gangu and Khunia villages in Amirgadh tehsil. Doctors could not identify the disease. “Six children have so far died of the mysteri-

ous disease. We have sent throat swabs of the affected children to various hospitals and are awaiting results,” said District Collector Jenu Devan. Minister of State for

Health Shankar Chaudhary had Friday visited the affected villages. A team of specialist doctors is camping in the district and studying the disease, the officer said.

Police said a massive search operation was launched in the area to trace the dens selling hooch

V.M. Parigi, and comprising Prohibition & Excise Department Director B.K. Kumar, and Forensic Science Laboratory Director M.S. Dahiya, have been asked to submit their report on the Vareli incident in

three days. Rupani’s intervention followed the pressure on the state administration from the locals about the incidents in Vareli village since September 4. There were allegations that the officials were delaying action and were refusing to acknowledge that the deaths were indeed by consuming hooch. With prohibition in place, the local administration and police find it difficult to explain availability of spu-

rious liquor. “Prima facie all the post mortem reports suggest presence of methanol. We have sent all the reports to Forensic Science Laboratory. Once we receive FSL report we would be able to establish the exact cause of death,” said Surat’s in-charge Collector K. Rajesh. Chief District Health Officer, Megha Mehta, too was cautious in her diagnosis. “Many of the patients brought in showed symptoms of vomiting

and severe breathlessness, with their pulse rate falling drastically. “Though the victims showed symptoms of having consumed spurious liquor, we wanted to be sure about whether there was some kind of a new virus and so have sent samples to forensic laboratory for confirmation,” she said. The blood samples of the victims have also been sent for tests to National Institute of Virology, Pune.

Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti, which was defeated last year on its debut, did not contest the election this year. “A significant number of 17,712 voters opted for NOTA, introduced in the DUSU polls this year,” said Chief Election Commissioner for the polls DS Rawat. Union

minister Arun Jaitley, who was elected DUSU president in 1974, congratulated ABVP on its victory. “Congratulations to DU students & #ABVP on comprehensively winning President, VP & Secretary posts in #DUSUPolls All the best to ABVP team,” he tweeted. BJP national president Amit Shah too congratulated the ABVP candidates, describing the victory as “the triumph of nationalism”. “Congrats to ABVP. #DUSU verdict is triumph of Nationalism. RBI Governor’s currency challenge: A note for Dr Urjit Patel

Urjit Patel took over as the governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) this week under a very different set of circumstances than his predecessor Raghuram Rajan. Macroeconomic conditions are much more favourable today than they were in September 2013—current account and fiscal deficit are under control, growth is expected to pick up, and India now has a new monetary policy framework in place. But one of the areas that will need Patel’s immediate attention is currency management and foreign exchange reserves. While the RBI is well prepared to deal with the possibility of outflows because of foreign currency non-resident deposits’ redemptions in the short run, it might have to re-evaluate how it intends to manage currency in the medium term as reserves continue to rise. Urjit Patel has taken over as governor at a time when the RBI has, for the first time, been given a clear legal mandate to target inflation. Governor Patel, lead author of the flexible inflation targeting framework, is undoubtedly the most suitable person to give credibility to the new mandate. His biggest challenge now lies in leading the reforms through which the RBI can actually influence inflation. Raghuram Rajan’s key contribution was his firm commitment to inflation targeting as the objective of monetary policy. His term ended with the RBI being given the legal mandate for inflation targeting. Patel faces a much tougher task. Why is Patel’s job much harder? Until now the RBI could talk about price stability and it could respond to the inflation rate by changing the policy rate, but it was not held responsible for the outcome. A rise in CPI inflation could be explained by blaming fiscal expansion, demand for protein, bad measures of inflation, inadequate transmission of monetary policy and so on. What has changed now is that the RBI can no longer merely “explain” high inflation. If CPI inflation is higher than the target, it has to not only provide reasons for its failure to meet the target, but also propose remedial actions. While today it is a challenge for the RBI to even influence bank lending rates, let alone the CPI, the inflation targeting mandate requires the RBI to ensure that it is able to do so. The amendment to the RBI Act in the Finance Bill 2016 that redefined the objective of monetary policy might have shifted the decision of setting the policy rate from being the sole responsibility of the governor to a committee process, but the Monetary Policy Committee only has the mandate of setting the policy rate. The responsibility of ensuring that changes in the policy rate get transmitted to the financial sector remains with the governor. It is he who will lead the RBI in managing liquidity, undertaking repo transactions, buying and selling government bonds and foreign exchange and ensuring competition in the banking sector so that the MPC’s decisions get transmitted to markets. Improving the transmission of monetary policy is no simple task. There are no easy recipes. For example, one necessary but not sufficient condition for obtaining financial markets that transmit changes made to the policy rate throughout the financial system is a deep and liquid bond market. The bond market in India is seriously limited by the lack of an independent public debt management office and restricted access to bond markets.

Sufi singers from Balochistan and Pakistan roped in for Mirzya

(H.S.) | Mumbai Filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Mirzya is a full-blown musical with composers Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy pulling out all stops to make the legendary love tale of Mirza and Sahibaan as epic in proportion as possible. The title song alone involved the blended talents of Sufi singers from India, Pakistan, and Balochistan. While Daler Mehndi and the upcoming young Sufi singers The Nooran Sisters —

Jyoti and Sultan from Jalandhar — comprise the Indian contingent of singers for the title track, from Pakistan, came the legendary Sufi singer Sain Zahoor who sings predominantly at religious shrines. The internationally celebrated Balochi folk singer Akhtar Chanal Zahri also flew in to pitch in for the title song giving a kind of epic heft to Gulzar’s lyrics. “Sain Zahoor is an interesting character. His look itself is so amazing. He is so innocent and truly im-

mersed in his own music and world. Until 2006, he never put his voice into a recording studio. The unique thing is when you teach him the lyrics of the song, he draws pictures instead of writing syllables… Amazing! And that’s how he remembers the words… Truly a delight to work with,” Mahadevan said. He is equally amazed by the Baloch singer Akhtar Chanal Zahri. “Akhtar bhai also is so much fun to work with and had an amazing voice texture… We had to compose the pieces around these two exquisite singers’ voices so that their presence doesn’t look forced into the song,” he said. Approximately 300 hours of music has been recorded by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy for Mirzya. Out of this, a large chunk has been used in the film.

Shah Rukh Khan lends his voice to Prabhu Deva, Sonu Sood’s Tutak Tutak Tutiya (H.S.) | New Delhi

The trailer of Tutak Tutak Tutiya starring Sonu Sood, Tamannaah Bhatia and Prabhu Deva released a few days back. The film is Sonu’s maiden production venture. And guess who has lent his voice to Sonu’s film. None other than Shah Rukh Khan. Shah Rukh and Sonu have earlier worked in Happy New Year, where the two apparently shared a great bonding. No wonder, when Sonu decided to make a film, he wanted Shah Rukh to give voice to the narrative, and SRK with a big heart agreed. The narration seems a bit familiar with few dialogues from SRK’s previous films. We will leave it for you to guess the film now. Meanwhile, the trailer looks funny and quirky. Both Sonu and Prabhu seem to share

an interesting chemistry. Tamannaah is seen in two avatars which are poles apart – one of a traditional woman and the other as a modern girl. Farah Khan is also seen doing a cameo. The film is basically a horror comedy. A song from the film featuring Prabhu, Sonu and Esha Gupta was also released and looks too funky. Tutak Tutak Tutiya is directed by Vijay and will have a worldwide release on October 7 this year. Sonu Sood is also keen to show Tutak Tutak Tutiya to Jack-

ie Chan and hopes the superstar will dance on the film’s songs. Sonu is working with Chan in the multi-lingual action comedy Kung Fu Yoga. The Happy New Year actor has turned producer with Tutak Tutak Tutiya and hopes to arrange a screening for the action star. When asked if he will be showing the film to Chan, Sonu said, “I would love to. Jackie revealed the first look of the film. When I shared with him that I am producing the film he said it’s amazing.”

liked me. In Bollywood, they like to put us in short clothes. And I am very shy, I don’t like wearing revealing stuff though my image is such. Unfortunately, it’s a body-obsessed industry. You want to see someone like me shaking and dancing,” she stated in an interview with Filmfare. Despite making a dream debut opposite Ranbir Kapoor in ‘Rockstar’, Nargis said her journey in the industry has been tumultuous. “It has been a tumultuous journey no doubt. But I

feel blessed to have got work.” said the ‘Housefull 3’ actress. “I was at the receiving end of much criticism. It’s difficult to make it if you’re not born or raised here. It’s tough coming from another place because things work differently here. But I kept reminding myself that things would get better, not worse,” she added.Further in the interview, the 36-year-old actress also spoke about the challenges she had to face to survive in the showbiz.

Deepika Padukone is my favourite: Dwayne Bravo

(H.S.) | Mumbai Dwayne Bravo seems to be slowly but steadily making inroads into Bollywood. The stylish West Indies all rounder who has lent his voice to a song in Tum Bin 2 today expressed his deep admiration for the beauteous Deepika Padukone. Gush-

ing hugely while mentioning her name, Bravo said, ” Deepika Padukone is my favourite. I met her at Yuvraj Singh’s fashion event. When I saw her, I was like wow.” When asked if he would like to romance Deepika in a movie, the cricketer said, ” I don’t know about romance but would defi-

nitely love to work with her.” Talking about his new turn as a singer, Bravo said learning Hindi words was a little tough but overall he enjoyed the entire experience of singing. Calling SRK his boss, Bravo said he is still in touch with the superstar Khan. The cricketer was also expressed his desire to meet Salman Khan whom he has met only once yet again. For a man who is known for his fashion sense, Bravo doesn’t want his fashion to outdo his performs on field. “Cricket is what will always be my prime focus.”

rape. He asserted that it talks about the current situation especially, for the younger generation in the country. The film revolves around three girls who get trapped in a criminal case and Bachchan plays a lawyer. The girls face a court trial for attempt to murder and defaming some men. It ultimately shows the kind of thoughts and language that are used in the courtroom when we have a woman standing in the victim box. But as much the film has garnered praise for its high dose of drama and emotions,

its cast seems to be having a gala time ahead of its release this week. Taapsee, who plays one of the protagonists in Pink, shared a video on Twitter expressing how her gang was missing Bachchan all through. We see all the actors singing and dancing on Bachchan’s famous song ‘Jumma Chumma”. Taapsee captioned it as, “A little tribute to our one n only @ SrBachchan from the #pinksquad we miss you sir!A little tribute to our one n only @SrBachchan from the #pinksquad we miss you sir!

Goswami, also an accused in the case. Addressing a media gathering through a pre-recorded video message, with a battery of six lawyers hailing from Kenya, America, and India beside her, the former actor said: “This is kalyug, where the bad is glorified and the truth suppressed.” Kulkarni’s lawyers alleged that the Thane police had impli-

cated her in the case at the behest of the American Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). “America wants to extradite Goswami to their country. In order to ensure that the process is carried out smoothly, they are pressuring the Thane police to name her (Kulkarni) as an accused,” said Daniel Arshack, a US-based lawyer. “The question one needs to ask is what is the DEA doing in Thane. What is their interest in the case.” Noted criminal lawyer and NCP MP Majeed Memon said, The Gujarat Anti Terrorism Squad is probing the same set of accused in another Ephedrine haul in Ahmedabad.

Pink cast’s tribute for Amitabh Bachchan will take you to 90s Bollywood (H.S.) | New Delhi

Amitabh Bachchan, the Shehenshan of Bollywood is here with his third release of the year – Pink. And giving him company onscreen are young actors Taapsee Pannu, Kriti Kulkarni, Angad Bedi and Dhritiman Chatterjee. And before you think this article is in tune with the intense plot of the film, well, no. It is about a super fun dedication Bachchan’s co-stars from Pink gave to him, through a special video. At least this time, they aren’t facing the roughness of legal proceeding or shedding tears, like we saw them doing in the film’s trailers. Rather, they are doing a ‘Jumma Chumma’ act dedicated to the senior actor. Bachchan had recently refused to call Pink, a film about

Following reports that the phones’ batteries have combusted during charging and normal use, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission said it was working on an official recall of the devices and that users should turn them off in the meantime. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd said it was working with the agency and asked customers to immediately turn in their Note 7 phones. It voluntarily issued a recall last week for 10 markets, including South Korea and the United States, and it said it was expediting shipments of replacement phones to customers in the United States.

GSLV-F05 launch a feather in the cap of ISRO

Agency | Sriharikota The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the GSLV-F05 flight on September 8. The launch, which was as per the textbook precision has added yet another feather to its cap. The flight carried an advanced weather communication satellite on board. The vehicle used the indigenously developed Cryogenic engine to put the 2800 kg satellite into its orbit. Even though the launch was scheduled for 4.10PM, it was delayed by 40minutes due to a technical snag. However, engineers were quick to rectify the fault and the flight was blasted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, around 120 km from Chennai. With this launch, India has become one of the few select countries in the India to be equipped with an ability to carry a huge satellite weighing up to two tonnes. The placement of the satellite in the geostationary orbit provided a huge impetus to the country’s space program.

Singapore witnesses rise in Zika infection cases

Agency | New Delhi Twelve fresh cases of the Zika virus infection have brought the total number of infections in Singapore to 304, confirmed a report. The Ministry of Health and National Environment Agency (NEA) said in a joint statement that among these newly reported cases, 10 cases are linked to the the main cluster spanning Aljunied Crescent, Sims Drive, Kallang Way and Paya Lebar Way while one case is linked to the Elite Terrace cluster, Xinhua news agency reported. The other new case has no known links to any existing cluster. The NEA is continuing with vector control operations and outreach efforts in the cluster areas. As of Thursday, a total of 183 breeding habitats have been found and destroyed. Outreach activities supporting the ‘Mozzie Wipeout Movement Against Zika’ will be conducted all over Singapore to urge all residents to join in the collective effort in the fight against Zika. A ‘5-step Mozzie Wipeout’ -- including removing stagnant water and not littering -- would be conducted. Aligned to the dengue control approach, the NEA reiterated that they will continue to work with stakeholders and the community to reduce mosquito breeding, as vector control is key to reducing the transmission of Zika in the community.

(H.S.) | New Delhi 20th March 2016. Manchester City VS Manchester United. A jam-packed Etihad stadium (which is a rarity). 15 minutes on the clock. Manchester United moves forward as Spaniard Juan Mata passes the ball to the 18-year old Marcus Rashford, who goes past Martin Demichellis, and then calmly shoots the ball past Joe Hart into the nets. The stadium erupts into celebrations. Manchester United 1-0 Manchester City. With this goal, Marcus Rashford became the youngest goalscorer (18 years 141 days) in the history of the Manchester Derby. Till last year, most football fans were unaware of a young Manchester United U-19 player who goes by the name

Marcus Rashford. In a span of few months, everything has changed for the 18-year old British striker. Graduated from Manchester United academy, Rashford got his chance to play in the first team squad, in UEFA Europa League clash against Midtjylland, in February 2016. The last minute injury to Anthony Martial forced the former United boss Louis Van Gaal to play the gamble. The gamble worked. Marcus Rashford scored two goals in the game and became instant hit among the fans. Three days later the red devils faced Premiere League rivals Arsenal. With Martial again on the bench, Rashford got another shot in the first team. He scored two goals again and led the team to victory. About

a month later, Rashford scored the only goal in the derby clash against Manchester City, again giving a victory to Manchester United in a crucial game. In 2015-2016 season, he scored 8 goals in total 18 appearances. With the reputation of the player rising, Rashford was selected in Roy Hodgson’s Euro Cup squad for England. He scored a goal in just 3 minutes in his first international game, a friendly against Australia. The youngster who slowly gained reputation for his fast pace dribbling skills, was praised by Zlatan Ibrahimovic in a pre-season game against Galatasaray. A video footage showing Ibrahimovic applauding Rashford’s skills went viral after the game. In spite of all the accolades, United’s new manager Jose Mourinho so far, in three premiere league games this season, has not given a first team start to the youngster. Rashford gave United a victory by scoring in injury time against Hull City, thus proving his goal-scoring abilities to the manager.

US Open: Stan Wawrinka tops Kei Nishikori, to meet Novak Djokovic in final (H.S.) | New York

Stan Wawrinka outslugged Japanese sixth seed Kei Nishikori 4-6 7-5 6-4 6-2 in energy-sapping humidity at Flushing Meadows on Friday to set up a U.S. Open final against world number one Novak Djokovic. The third-seeded Swiss took a while to get untracked as 2014 U.S. Open runner-up Nishikori played a near flawless opening set of the semi-final with just two errors. The Japanese broke Wawrinka to start the second set, but the Swiss started rolling after breaking back in the fourth game and Nishikori, who went five tough sets to upset second seed Andy Murray in a four-hour quarter-final, began to wither. Wawrinka, the 2014 Australian Open winner and 2015 French Open champion,

broke Nishikori in the last game of the second, third and fourth sets to reach his first U.S. Open final. “He was playing really good from the beginning, he was dictating,” Wawrinka said. “He was putting pressure on me, didn’t give me any time. I had to wait. I had to fight. “And he also started to get tired a little bit. That’s when I started to get aggressive.” The Swiss has lost 19 of 23 matches against defending champion Djokovic, who beat French 10th seed Gael Monfils in his

semi-final, but Wawrinka has beaten the Serb on his way to both of his grand slam titles. “To tell myself I’m going to be in the final is something crazy,” he said. “I’m really excited. I watched the final so many times here. Roger (Federer), Novak, Rafa (Nada) they are amazing champions. To play Novak in the final… is going to be something special.” Djokovic, a 6-3 6-2 3-6 6-2 winner against Monfils, is prepared for a sterner test from Wawrinka.

SPORTS ROUNDUP Mariyappan Thangavelu wins India’s first gold medal at Rio 2016 Paralympics

(H.S.) | Bengaluru Mariyappan Thangavelu became the first Indian to win a gold medal in the T 42 high jump event of the Paralympic games in Rio de Janiero on Saturday. Thangavelu’s medal was joined by a bronze medal won in the same event by Varun Singh Bhati that brought India’s overall medal tally in Rio to two. Thangavelu’s feat is being lauded all over the country. Pol-

iticians, sportsmen and celebrities congragulated the two medallists on social media. Thangavelu and Bhati’s achievment comes on day two of the Rio Paralympics in the T42 high jump event. The T42 is a disability classifications for sports events in which athletes have single above the knee amputations or comparable disability. The video of Thangavelu’s gold-medal winning jump shows the

athlete taking his starting position in the Olypmic Stadium. All eyes were on him as there was no other event happening in the stadium at the time. Thangavelu then takes his run-up and finally, the stadium cheered as he lifted his hands in the air after completing the 1.89 metre-jump. Thangavelu’s gold medal was followed by USA’s Sam Grewe and the bronze medal went to Varun Singh Bhati, both of whom jumped 1.86 metres. India’s had a third medal prospect in Sharad Kumar. Kumar was leading the pack at one point after clearing hurdles of 1.55m and 1.60m but he could only register a best of 1.77m, which brought him a sixth place finish.

ers of this art. At home, he was always a handful, because of his ability to get the ball to reverse swing early. Perhaps the most devastating spell of reverse swing bowling in recent times was orchestrated by South Africa’s Dale Steyn in the Nagpur Test match six seasons ago. Kookaburra’s chief spokesman Shannon Gill gives a plausible explanation for this phenomenon. “Since the games were being played under lights, our primary concern was to address the issue of visibility. Hence, our biggest challenge while making pink ball was to retain its shine for a longer duration as compared to the traditional

red ball,” he said. A shiny hard pink ball meant more lacquer and better visibility. But the flip side was that the ball would not get scruffed up as easily compared to the red ball, and therefore it would not aid reverse swing. “This was the dilemma we were in while making the ball,” he noted. Gill was not particularly worried about the pink ball’s lack of reverse swing. He insisted these were early days, and the ball would go through several stages of evolution. But the challenge ahead of the Melbourne-based firm was in striking the fine balance and getting the pink ball to behave and perform like the red ball.

Duleep Trophy 2016: Pink ball has some ‘old’ issues (H.S.) | Greater Noida

“The pink ball swings around a bit in the initial 8-10 overs, and after that there is absolutely no assistance for fast bowlers. One of the biggest drawbacks is that there is no reverse swing happening with this ball. So fast bowlers will struggle to take wickets. If you compare it with the traditional red ball, it reverses after 40-45 overs. So that’s a more potent tool on the abrasive tracks here in India,” India Blue’s fast bowler Pankaj Singh said after the third Duleep Trophy encounter earlier this week. Going by the three Duleep Trophy games played here at the Greater Noida Stadium, the shiny pink Kookaburra ball has not aided reverse swing. Reverse swing is cricket’s subtle art, and over the years fast bowlers have used it with considerable success in India. Former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan was one of the best praction-

The apex court had asked the monitoring authority to place before it preliminary reports relating to the alleged fake encounters between 2002 and 2006 in Gujarat, purportedly showing a pattern that people from the minority community were targeted as terrorists. These were submitted periodically. VMC to hand over another housing project to controversial developer

Correspondent | Vadodara

The VMC standing committee has passed a proposal seeking clearance to shift a slum redevelopment scheme to the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) scheme, and hand out the contract to the Manav Infrastructure Ltd, which is also developing the controversial Sanjaynagar slum rehabilitation project. According to the proposal placed before the standing committee, Manav Infrastructure Ltd, an Ahmedabad-based devloper will pay a land premium of Rs 12 crore and construct 84 homes for the displaced families. Earlier, the Gujarat

government had signed an MoU to redevelop the Khodnagar slum pocket in 2010 with NA Construction. The contractor had even begun construction but the excruciatingly slow process and an “illegal” booking amount taken by the contractor from buyers of the commercial structure, resulted in the VMC terminating the said contractor. The firm, Manav Infrastructure, has been under fire for its Sanjaynagar slum redevelopment project.

The bench said it was “satisfied that the petitioner was not in illegal confinement or in house arrest (and)

no illegal conditions are imposed upon him so as to restrain him to enjoy freedom”. “…but at the same time we are of the opinion that every citizen of India can enjoy fundamental rights granted by the constitution of India, and every citizen is duty bound to maintain law and order…and peace of the state where he resides,” the order read. On August 22, Hardik’s lawyers had filed a Habeas Corpus petition, accusing the Rajasthan police of wrongly and illegally confining Hardik by placing him under house arrest at his temporary residence in Udaipur. The Rajasthan government, DGP and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Udaipur had been named respondents in the petition.

In a relief to Hardik Patel, the Rajasthan High Court on Friday allowed the Patidar agitation leader to move within Udaipur, the place of his temporary residence, while directing him to not take “undue advantage of liberty or misuse liberty”. The HC did not find the actions of the Rajasthan police to be illegal and held they were required to maintain law and order in Udaipur, where Hardik has been staying since being granted bail by the Gujarat High Court. While allowing Hardik to move within Udaipur, the HC bench comprising Justice G R Moolchandani and Justice G K Vyas held that “if the Gujarat HC is of the opinion that the petitioner can disturb the peace of Gujarat then obviously when… he is residing in..Rajasthan, more specifically in Udaipur for six months, he may disturb the peace of the state of Rajasthan”. “Therefore it is the duty of the state of Rajasthan to take care of all the facts
