Peace rally has killed 86 people The explosions occurred minutes apart near Ankara’s main train station as people were gathering for the Ankara rally, organized by the country’s public sector workers’ trade union and other civic society groups Agency | Ankara Turkey’s Health Minister says the two bomb explosions in the Turkish capital have killed a total of 86 people. Malik. He is not a builder,” Khan told a news conference. “The party asked for my resignation and I tendered it,” Khan said. “I am being threatened by unknown people since yesterday (Friday),” he added. “I will make more revelations in a day or two.”

Unrest that erupted several weeks ago at Jerusalem’s most sensitive holy site spread Friday to Gaza in the form of deadly border clashes with Palestinian protesters, as Israeli security forces struggled to contain a wave of Palestinian stabbing attacks against civilians and soldiers. For the first time since the current violence began, clashes broke out along the Gaza border after Palestinians in the territory ruled by the Islam-

ic militant group Hamas rolled burning tires and threw rocks at Israeli troops on the frontier. Six Palestinians were killed and a dozen were wounded, the Palestinian Health Ministry said. The Israeli military said “More than a thousand rioters infiltrated the buffer zone engaging the forces at the security fence. Rioters reached the security fence- hurled a grenade, rocks and rolled burning tires at Israeli forces … threatening to breach the fence and storm the adjacent com-

munities.” It said troops fired warning shots and then fired at main instigators to prevent their advance. Recent days have seen a series of attacks by young Palestinians wielding household items like

kitchen knives, screwdrivers and even a vegetable peeler. The youths had no known links to armed groups who have targeted Israeli soldiers and civilians at random, complicating security efforts.

cow protection history of medieval Rajasthan Bollywood’s ‘Umrao Jaan’ Rekha turns 61 Amazing Spider-Man 2’s stuntman A few hundred years ago, there lived a native in the Rajasthani mofussil town of Khatu-Shyamji by the name of Bharmall. He was said to be an influential zamindar. They say, one day, the local Muslim butcher was forcibly walking away with some cows to the town for slaughter. Bharmall passionately swore that if the butcher were to take away the cows, he would immolate himself in protest. The butcher paid no heed and mercilessly dragged away the cows. Bharmall, a brave warrior, true to his honour, immolated himself. A stone tablet that narrated this heroic story was erected at the place where Bharmall immolated himself. About 55 years ago, some people unearthed the stone tablet by chance, while digging to build a house. A small shrine was built there that came to be known as Bharmall ka Satta. Since then, supernatural and healing powers have come to be associated with it. It has become a tradition in the area for newly-weds to visit the shrine for a blissful conjugal life. It is also said that an offering at the shrine of a brinjal and a broom is a cure for facial moles. Bharmall is my ancestor from my father’s side. He is supposed to have served as an official at the court of the local raja. I travelled to Khatu-Shyamji over a decade ago with my grandfather to see the shrine. I wish I had asked what this story meant to him. He is no longer alive to answer this question, but as a historian, I continue to wonder. How am I to understand this story? Is this yet another tale that captures the cruelty and insensitivity of the beef-eating Muslim and the heroism of the Hindu who rescues gaumata? Or is there another reading of this story? The fount of Bharmall’s tale is the history of medieval Rajasthan, where cow protection against diseases and raids was a definitive aspect of the lives of pastoral communities. As outlined in the forthcoming book by historian Tanuja Kothiyal, cow protection also differentiated the culture of pastoral communities from that of trading communities. The region of Khatu-Shyamji is littered with tablets commemorating “saint-warriors” (jujhars) who protected cattle from other Hindu adversaries. Bharmall was also one such warrior. However, in Bharmall’s tale, it is the Muslim butcher and not just another Rajput cattle-raiding group that is the abductor. When does this shift in the narrative occur? When was it that the Muslim butcher was inserted into the story, and why? This interpolation of the Muslim butcher in commemorative tales and the reasons for it are to be found in the history of colonial and nationalist politics of the late 19th century.

Income tax department employees to hold strike today

Agency | New Delhi Over 50,000 employees of the Income Tax Department will go on a day-long countrywide strike today to protest the delay in promotions and appointments of tax officers in the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). The two prominent groups — Income Tax Employees Federation (ITEF) and Income Tax Gazetted Officers’ Association (ITGOA) — represent about 97 percent of the department’s workforce and have already notified the decision to the apex-policy making body of the department, CBDT. The remaining 3 percent work force of the department comprises of officers drawn from the Indian Revenue Service. The associations said if their demands for timely promotion in cadres and providing required infrastructure is not met, the work of budget collection and taxpayer services are “bound to fail” in the coming days. Earlier in June, the government asked the tax department to take urgent steps to widen the tax base and add at least 25 lakh new assesses every month during the current financial year 2015-16.

Layoffs will be spread across the entire San Francisco-based company and will likely include engineers, which account for about half of Twitter’s approximately 4,200 employees, according to Re/code. The job cuts reportedly come as engineering teams are being reorganised at the one-to-many messaging service. Re/code cited unnamed sources in its yesterday’s report, while Twitter declined to comment on what it referred to as rumour and speculation. Twitter is betting that the second coming of co-founder Dorsey as chief executive will bring blockbuster growth that has eluded its grasp and disappointed investors.

Delhi Dynamos coach Roberto Carlos suffers fracture Agency | New Delhi

Delhi Dynamos coach Roberto Carlos did not play in his side’s 1-0 win over Chennaiyin FC on October 8 because of an injury, the Indian Super League football side said on Saturday. The club said that the Brazilian World Cup winner suffered a major fracture in his right hand finger during a training session before the first match against Goa at Margao. He, however, played in Goa since the team needed him but the injury got worse during that game which Delhi Dynamos lost 0-2. Carlos wanted to play for the fans at the first home game against Chennaiyin at Jawaharlal

Nehru Stadium here but could not do that due to his fractured finger. Commenting on his injury, Carlos said, “I’m thankful to God that it’s just my finger and not my legs or feet.” “Even though I was not playing for the match against Chennaiyin, I’m so glad that the team did a great job. I hope to be able to join them soon. I want a quick recovery for the

Delhi Dynamos President Prashant Agarwal said, “We, the Delhi Dynamos family, wish him a speedy recovery so that he can continue being the asset that he is for the team. We look forward to see him play brilliant football in the upcoming matches.”

Acting on a tip off received late Friday night, that a cow was being slaughtered at the premises of Savera hotel, situated near a state bus depot, the police reached the spot and found a dead

Asked if any changes had taken place in governance after the act was implemented, Gadhvi, a former IAS officer, said that it had led to positive changes among officers who might have earlier not been very cautious in making notes on files etc. But every officer was now very cautious and would do his best to make proper notes.

out the serial blasts in Ahmedabad on July 26 2008, we suspect that Zainul Abedin could be the main supplier of the explosives for bomb making,” said a top police official of Gujarat police. 56 people had died and over 200 were injured in the 19 blasts that took place in different parts of the city. “During our investigation we had found that Soeb alias Potanical brought the explosives to the IM suspects for the Ahmedabad serial blasts. Now, when Zainul Abedin’s name has propped up as the main supplier, he could be the missing link,” added a crime branch official. IM had

Intelligence agencies were caught napping as the terror outfit had carried out two serial blasts in two days in different cities. IM operatives also planted 29 bombs in Surat. Fortunately, bombs planted in Surat did not explode due to faulty timer chips and batteries. Meanwhile, the other person detained in Saudi Arabia, Abu Sufiyaan is believed to be from Hyderabad and suspected to be LeT operative.
