VHP activist killed in violence in Karnataka A 50-year-old activist of the right wing Vishwa Hindu Parishad who was injured in clashes between Hindu and Muslim groups died in the Madikeri government hospital on Tuesday morning Agency | Kodgu A 50-year-old activist of the right wing Vishwa Hindu Parishad who was injured in clashes between Hindu and Muslim groups died in the Madikeri government hospital on Tuesday morning. He was protesting the celebration of the birth anniversary of controversial 18th century Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan in the Madikeri town of the Kodagu district of Karnataka. The activist identified as Kutapppa, 50, suffered head injuries during stone throwing when the pro-Tipu Sultan group and Hindutva activists clashed at the Thimmaiah circle in the centre of Madikeri town on Tuesday morning. The clashes erupted after a Muslim

group that was taking out a procession to mark the Karnataka government’s Tipu Sultan Jayanti celebration through Madikeri town came face to face with Hindutva activists protesting against the celebration of the birth anniversary in the middle of the town. The clashes went out of control as

those protesting on both sides of the communal divide outnumbered the police presence on the ground. Police later resorted to a lathi charge to disperse the groups to bring the situation under control. The decision by the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government to celebrate Tipu Sultan

Jayanthi on November 10 has been marked by warnings of protests by Hindutva groups led by the BJP and the RSS. While the state government is facilitating the organisation of processions and public meetings to mark the occasion the BJP and RSS have warned of disruption of

The charge brought against Hardik Patel is absurdly out of proportion to the provocation

The Supreme Court has declined to give relief to Hardik Patel of the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti, who faces sedition charges in Gujarat, until the probe against him is complete. This is yet another opportunity to consider the utility — rather, redundancy — of Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code, which governs sedition. Would its removal render the statute books incompetent to address the actions that now attract its provisions? This question is so patently rhetorical that it assumes the form of the elephant in the room every time sedition charges are imposed. Because, usually, the charge is absurdly out of proportion to the provocation and, more compellingly, because it seems to be a feint to conceal the anxieties of the government, which lie elsewhere. In the case of Patel, his appetite for disturbing public order is alarming and the government can only see him as a problem. The charge of sedition was attracted by video footage in which he allegedly told an activist threatening suicide to kill a few policemen instead. But to see him as an enemy of the state on grounds of a loose statement would be to accord him disproportionate importance. But at least Patel is capable of causing some actual mayhem, unlike other recent targets of the sedition law. The physician and social worker Binayak Sen was put away merely for associating with Maoists. Arundhati Roy was charged for speaking at a seminar on Kashmir titled “Azadi: The Only Way”. In 2008, the scholar Ashis Nandy was charged by the Gujarat government for a newspaper article. It is all too easy to deliberately misread criticism of the government as an attack on India, and throw Section 124A at it. It is no coincidence that freedom fighters number among the most prominent targets of sedition law. Mahatma Gandhi had celebrated it as “the prince among the political sections of the Indian Penal Code designed to suppress the liberty of the citizen.” The very idea of sedition, which criminalises “attempts to excite disaffection” against the government, is a vestigial remnant of colonial law that should have been surgically excised in a free country. The democratic system celebrates disaffection as a self-correcting mechanism. It values criticism of the government, institutions and the state, and holds the right to debate in the highest esteem. Sedition law, as it has been seen in use, is an anachronism in this system.

‘Dilwale’ trailer is the perfect Diwali Thoongaavanam review: A better gift to Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol’s fans Kamal film, pacy and slick Agency | Mumbai

Agency | Mumbai When you have the nation’s most favourite lover boy with eyes filled with emotions and his Simran reciprocating in the rightest way and he mouths the lines, “Mira, aaj ke baad mujhe apna chehra kabhi mat dikhaana… Jaan le loonga,” you know you are stuck on this one. Rohit Shetty and team are back this

Diwali with Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Dilwale’ that reunites him with his “Simran” Kajol after almost five years and yes, from the word go, they make you want to ask for more. The official trailer of the movie opens with a young looking SRK and Kajol in, perhaps, her most sensuous avatar, romancing away to glory. But as every love story has its shares of ups and

downs, our Hero and his Mira have some too, or so it seems. We then see Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon making “swag” entry just quite like Rohit Shetty’s films. The duo looks minty fresh and shares a hot chemistry. So, there is romance, dance, tragedy, emotions and comedy interspersed with some elements of intrigue. SRK’s character is shown to be all good, but is not so.

As the movie titles play, the filmmakers clearly mention that the movie is based on the French film Nuit Blanche. However, with Kamal Haasan in the film, it’s expected that the movie would be quite different from the original. The movie revolves around Diwakar( Kamal Haasan) who is a cop. The first scenes open with Kamal and his colleague Mani (Yugi Sethu) shooting a guy dead and making off with a black bag. We are then introduced to Mallika (Trisha), another cop, who is investigating this man’s murder. Diwakar has a son and his ex-wife and he shares custody of him. The next thing we know is that Diwakar’s son is kidnapped by Vit-

anthropic initiative includes intensive in-home services, residential treatment services, YVLifeSet services for girls aging out of foster care, and experimental therapies such as therapeutic drumming. So begins Aerosmith’s classic Janie’s Got a Gun, an anthemic tale of an abused girl. Now, Steven Tyler, lead vocalist, has launched a new initiative to give voice to victims

of abuse called Janie’s Fund. About the initiative, the rockstar tells Rolling Stone magazine, “As a father and grandfather, I want to focus my energy on things that really matter and leave behind something else in this crazy world along with my music. I am starting Janie’s Fund to give a voice to the millions of victims who haven’t had one and encourage

everyone to join me on this mission.” For those who donate to the fund Tyler has set up a few rewards that range from t-shirts to ‘star’ donors who donate $50 to a VIP Mardi Gras experience for the ‘big kahuna’ donors with $25,000. Fans of Tyler’s would immediately associate him to his trademark scarfed mi-

tal Rao (Prakash Raj). Why was he kidnapped? What was in that black bag? Is Diwakar a corrupt cop? What is Mallika really investigating? It’s an action thriller that stays true to its genre and a good break from the regular Kollywood films.

It has no song and dance, romance or masala. It’s a slick, well-made film that takes you through the course of what happens over one night to one man. One must congratulate director Rajesh Selva for coming up with a good debut flick.

In 1989, Aerosmith released the hit single ‘Janie’s Got a Gun’ from their album ‘Pump’, which revolved around the troubled relationship between a girl and her father. 26 years later, Steven Tyler, the band’s frontman, has announced an initiative called ‘Janie’s Fund’ that will focus on raising awareness and money for troubled girls who have suffered sexual abuse. Celebrate Diwali with the best Indian sweets, and learn to make them too

Former India cricketer and BJP MP Kirti Azad on Tuesday said that there is no chance of India playing the proposed series against Pakistan in December unless there is a peace on the border. “The members of boards are also Indian and they realise that terror and talks don?t go together until there is peace on boarder; I think there is no chance of bilateral series with Pakistan at no neutral venue,”Azad told here. “Our soldier or your soldiers, in times of war when you are protecting your border it does happen. There are so many ceasefire violations on international border, a line of control is something that has to be taken very seriously,” he added. Describing the

Shiv Sena protest that led to the cancellation of talks between the PCB official and BCCI official regarding the series as hooliganism, Azad said, ?Protesting is not a problem. But you can?t use strong arm tactics. You can?t man handle people. That?s not the way to do it. That?s not democracy. That’s trying to be hooliganism.” Azad also lauded newly-elected BCCI president Shashank Manohar for the decisions taken during the 85th annual general meeting held

in Mumbai. “I have great faith in Shashank Manohar. He is an upright and straight forward man and I really appreciate and laud him for his fantastic work since he became BCCI president,” Azad said. Earlier, Roger Binny was removed as national selector on grounds of conflict of interest, as his son, Stuart is playing for India, and cricket director of the national team Ravi Shastri has also been removed from the Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council.

Harriers eat crop- eating locusts , farmers stop using pesticides Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

Labhubhai Bhagwan, a farmer from Velavadar, has stopped using insecticide for his traditional cotton crop. Thanks to harriers — migratory birds from Europe — which eat crop eating locusts. Labhubhai says that usually the crop is attacked by locusts, but the presence of harriers in the field has helped him to minimize the use of insecticides. “We usually don’t spray insecticides on cotton. Harriers which fly into large numbers in Velavadar are the farmers’ best friends as they eat locusts. Instead of shooing them away, local farmers are known to be compassionate towards these birds,” he said, adding,

“Earlier, we used seven liters of insecticides in the field. But now we don’t use it. The insecticide use to be mixed in water and sprayed.” Not just Labhubhai, but people of 15-odd villages in and around Velavadar National Park have stopped using insecticides. Farmers traditionally grow cotton in and around Velavadar bird sanctuary in Bhavnagar district. The fact has also been substantiated in the findings of the forest department. Velavadar, known for black bucks, is also the biggest roosting site of harriers, the birds of prey, which have migrated in the park in September. “We have just taken the initial count and the figures are yet to be calculated.
