Mumbai high court acquits Salman Salman Khan hit-and-run case: According to the Bombay High Court, the prosecution failed to prove that the actor was drinking and moreover driving the vehicle on the night of the accident

Agency | Mumbai The Bombay High Court on Thursday acquitted actor Salman Khan of all charges in the 2002 hit-and-run case. The court has directed the actor, who was present in court for pronouncement of verdict, to furnish a fresh cash bond of Rs 25,000 on cancellation of the bond in the trial court. The Bandra Police Station has been asked to return his passport upon verification. Earlier, while disposing of the appeal filed by actor Salman Khan against a five year jail term by a lower court in the 2002 hit-and-run case, the court had said that the prosecution had failed to successfully establish the case on all the charges levelled against the actor. Justice A R Joshi disposed of the appeal and said that order will be given once the actor is present before the court. “Any strong suspicion cannot be enough to hold someone guilty. Prosecution hasn’t brought material on record to prove case and its entire evidence was based circumstantial in nature,” said Justice Joshi. He said that, while testimony

not be considered and the trial court had erred in taking it on record. He said that he was not “oblivious of perception of general public” but the court must decide the case based on material brought on record. Pointing to the order passed by the Sessions’ Court convicting Salman for five years, Justice Joshi said that “appreciof Salman’ s bodyguard a direct nature, the court ation of evidence by trail Ravindra Patil could be of had already said it could court was not proper as

Nuke, defence partnership may boost India-Japan ties Agency | New Delhi

A civil nuclear pact and an agreement to jointly produce US-2 amphibious military aircraft could add momentum to ties between India and Japan during Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s visit during December 11-13. Officials said “last mile efforts are still on” for concluding the deals. New Delhi sees the nuclear pact as a touchstone to measure the strength of its strategic ties with Japan. The deal is crucial to India as it will help the country further its ambitious civil nuclear programme and

enable it to improve ongoing civil nuclear cooperation India has with France and the US. Japanese forging major Japan Steel Works (JSW) is a supplier of critical equipment for reactor pressure vessels for most firms worldwide. Indian officials hope Abe will give the necessary

political push for this issue. The nuclear issue, however, is sensitive in Japan, the only country ever to have suffered an atomic strike. Japan wants explicit commitments on testing clauses — that is, the deal will be called off in the event of a nuclear test by India.

ecution failed to prove that the actor was drinking and moreover driving the vehicle on the night of the accident. He also pointed to several hypothesis which were created around the case such as the faulty manner of Investigation where the

prosecution failed to establish procedure of connecting chain of evidence with regard to collecting biological evidence. The other point was relating to purposely keeping loose ends so that a favourable order is achieved for the accused.

Headley is said to have visited India five times between 2006 and 2008, made maps, shot video footage and scouted several targets for the attacks including the Taj Hotel, Oberoi Hotel and Nariman House. Old script of India-Pakistan ties, the process can derail anytime

As a young British diplomat, Sir Harold George Nicolson participated in the Paris Peace Conference (1919) held in the aftermath of the World War I. Giving an account of the conference in his book Peacemaking 1919, Nicolson writes: “I learnt from this erratic but brilliant statesman [David Lloyd George] that apparent opportunism is not always irreconcilable with vision… that volatility of method is not always indicative of volatility of intentions.” Lloyd George served as the prime minister of the UK between 1916 and 1922. The current National Democratic Alliance government would require a diplomat-wordsmith like Nicolson to justify the spate of flip-flops on Pakistan. To be fair, confusion over the Pakistan policy has not been a monopoly of the current government. All the previous governments in recent memory have been equally, if not more, clueless in dealing with India’s most difficult neighbour. The dialogue held between Ajit Doval and Lt General (retd) Naseer Janjua—the national security advisers (NSA) of India and Pakistan respectively—accompanied by the foreign secretaries on 6 December in Bangkok has capped the latest round of the same old game involving recurrent phases of engagement and disengagement. The NSA-level dialogue was preceded by a “pull aside” meeting between prime ministers Narendra Modi and Nawaz Sharif on the sidelines of the Paris climate change summit. Sushma Swaraj, the minister of external affairs, is on a trip to Islamabad to attend the Heart of Asia conference, which focuses on regional cooperation with a strong emphasis on stability in Afghanistan. The Bangkok talks were intended to resume the bilateral engagement in order to pave the way for Modi’s participation in the 19th Saarc (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) summit scheduled to be held in Islamabad in 2016. The constraints that led to the cancellation of NSA-level dialogue in August were overcome by a mix of improvisations and compromises. The August dialogue was called off because Pakistan was not ready to honour India’s twin conditions of a) no meddling by the Hurriyat, a Kashmir-based organization with a separatist agenda, and b) restriction of the NSA-level talks to terrorism alone (leaving out Kashmir). The former was made clear to Pakistan through the cancellation of foreign secretary talks in August 2014 following the meeting between Hurriyat leaders and Abdul Basit, Pakistan’s high commissioner to India. The latter was enshrined in the joint statement released after the two prime ministers met in Ufa, Russia, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit held in July this year.

As the actor completes four years in Bollywood, she has replaced sexy with chubby and hot with cute with a dramatic new photoshoot that shows how much weight the Hasee to Phasee actor has lost in the last few months. No wonder, Twitter has gone into a tizzy since she posted her pictures. Parineeti wrote on Twitter on Wednes-

Because I am sure that, like me, even you are built that way.” The actor had said earlier, “For the last few months, I have been working on myself. Telugu outing “Bengal Tiger” will appeal to everybody. “Although we have a predictable story, but the way it has been treated will make all the difference. We’ve made an entertaining film and I guarantee that it won’t disappoint,” he said, adding that he had first heard a line of the story four years ago. Directed by Sampath Nandi, the

film stars Tamannaah Bhatia, Raashi Khanna and Boman Irani in important roles. “Even before Sampath made ‘Racha’, he narrated the line and I really liked it. However, I asked him to work on it. Meanwhile, both of us got busy with our respective projects and finally decided to join hands now,” he added.

Genelia and Riteish Deshmukh celebrated baby Riaan’s first birthday in November this year and now it seems like the couple is all set to welcome their second baby. Reports claim that Genelia might be pregnant again. Sources in the know suggest that actress Genelia D’Souza is apparently pregnant with her second baby and the little one will arrive in 2016. Well, if that happens, baby Riaan will soon have a sweet little sibling to play with! However, no official statements have been made as

yet as both actors have been maitaining a tightlip over the matter neither confirming or denying the reports. Riteish and Genelia got married February 3, 2012. Their dreamy love affair began way back in 20013 when they starred opposite each other in Tujhe Meri Kasam. The ac-

tress, who was planning to return to the film industry and resume work after a long break, may now have to put a stop to these new projects now that she is in the family way again. Genelia has appeared in several movies like Force, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and a few others.

After being treated for two whole months, the boy was discharged from the hospital and was told to continue his treatment at home. As time passed by, his skin condition worsened and the light penetration also declined.

abetting Jiah Khan’s suicide

Agency | Mumbai Agency | Mumbai Filmmaker Milap Zaveri says he is happy that many Bollywood stars have appreciated the motion poster of his upcoming adult comedy “Mastizaade”. The film stars Sunny Leone, Tusshar Kapoor, Vir Das and will feature the “Jism 2” actress in a double role. “It’s amazing that superstars like Anil Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Siddharth Malhotra, Ayushmann, Jacqueline Fernandez and so many more tweeted and shared the Mastizaade motion poster. Overwhelmed by their love for me and

my film,” Milap said in a statement. “Really grateful that they loved the poster so much. Looking forward to meeting their expectations with the film too,” he said. Co-written by Milap and Mushtaq Sheikh, “Mastizaade” is a raunchy comedy of errors revolving around Aditya Chotia (Das) and Sunny Kele (Kapoor) who fall for the twin sisters, Lily and Laila, played by Leone. Milap has earlier penned movies like “Masti” franchise, “Housefull” and directed “Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai”. “Mastizaade” hits the screens on January 29, 2016.

The CBI on Wednesday submitted the charge sheet in the Jiah Khan case in the session’s court, twoand-a-half years after the 25-year-old actress was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her Juhu flat on June 3, 2013. The agency confirmed that Sooraj Pancholi, Khan’s boyfriend at the time of her death, has been charged with abetting her suicide, as he had been by the Juhu police during the original probe. A CBI statement read, “It was alleged that a 3-page note seized by the state police on 10/06/2013 was written by Ms Jiah Khan, which narrated

Agency | Mumbai her intimate relationship, physical abuse and mental torture that she experienced at the hands of the said private person (Pancholi). The documents and the material objects of this case have been thoroughly and scientifically examined. “The Board of Forensic Medicine Experts has opined that the death was

suicidal in nature, which corroborated the observation and opinion of the post-mortem doctor. The forensic statement-analysis of the note written by the deceased has opined that the said note allegedly represents her mental status genuinely and the circumstances and reasons behind her suicide.”

Salman Khan is known for having a huge heart and funding charitable ventures. After his chart-buster flick Bajrangi Bhaijaan swept audiences off of their feet in both India and Pakistan, the Bollywood actor has also stepped up his efforts to strengthen bonds between India and Pakistan. Salman’s

Agency | New Delhi Remember the iPad Pro? It’s Apple’s monster 12.9-inch tablet that also transforms into a kind-ofsort-of laptop with an optional bluetooth keyboard. That monster is making its way to India this week. And the good news is that it only costs slightly more than the iPhone 6S. According to The Quint and Gadgets 360, which both cite independent sources within Apple, the iPad Pro will start at Rs. 67,900 for the WiFi-only 32GB version and go all the way up to Rs. 91,900 for the 128GB version with built-in cellular. As a point of comparison, the 16GB iPhone 6S costs Rs. 62,000 in India. Keep in mind, though, that these prices are just for the iPad Pro. Apple sells the keyboard for an additional $169 in the US, which is just over Rs. 11,000. It also sells a $99 stylus called the Apple Pencil, which, we think you should buy if you’re serious about getting this thing.

Why RBI’s intervention in rupee futures market is prudent

Agency | Mumbai Reserve Bank of India (RBI) added to nervousness in the markets by announcing that they would intervene in the Exchange Traded Currency Derivatives (ETCD) market, if required. Ironically, the reasoning behind such a move by the central bank is to curb nervousness and volatility. The markets have been surprised by the development and believe that the RBI feels that the ‘perfect storm’ – which the World Bank has warned of if the US raises interest rates – is a reality. The US Federal Reserve is expected to meet in a week’s time to consider a rate hike for the first time since the financial meltdown of 2008. So what does the RBI’s intervention in ETCD mean and why is the market jittery? ETCD is the currency equivalent of futures market in equities. Currencies can be traded on the ETCD through a leverage position, which in that market is very low. As per the current norms, for a lot of $1,000 (equivalent to around Rs 67,000) the margin required is only Rs 1,800, or only 2.7%. As compared to these margins in the currency market, stocks attract a margin of around 40%, while equity indices need 20%.

Facebook works better even on bad internet connections now Agency | New Delhi

Facebook’s News Feed is the first thing you see when you open the app or website. So it’s important for it to load quickly irrespective of the internet connection or device. Facebook is modifying the timeline to show more relevant stories in the News Feed that load even on flaky internet connections. On slow connections, users will be allowed to write comments that will be saved and posted when the connection is stronger. Facebook writes: “In the past, if you were on a poor internet connection or had no connection, you might need to wait for stories to load when you opened News Feed. We are now testing an update in which we look at all the previously downloaded stories present on your phone that you have not yet viewed, and rank them based on their relevance. We also factor in whether the images for the story are available. This way we can immediately display relevant stories you haven’t seen yet, instead of showing a spinner while you wait for new stories. When we receive new stories from the server when you’re back online, we load and rank those stories normally.” Facebook previously tried to make the experience of browsing Facebook less annoying for users on slower networks like 2G or low end devices with the Facebook Lite app for Android.

Vijay Hazare Trophy: Domestic cricket gets a dash of glamour Agency | Kolkata

It’s still unclear whether India will play a limited-overs series against Pakistan this month before they head Down Under for five ODIs and three T20 internationals in the second week of January. But this uncertainty has an upside to it if you care for Indian domestic cricket. This unusual winter break has made all the big names free and available for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. From MS Dhoni to Virat Kohli (not playing the first match) and Ravichandran Ashwin — India’s premier 50-overs domestic meet starts tomorrow with a stellar star-cast. When Dhoni last played for Jharkhand, IPL still sounded like an audacious idea. It was the summer of 2007 and India had been walking

wounded after a dismal World Cup performance. Eight seasons later, Dhoni is now a cult, India’s most successful captain ever. He has won everything that cricket can offer. The 34-year-old is now in the autumn of his career. He has retired from Test cricket and plays only in the shorter formats. Returning to his roots will allow him quality game-time ahead of the Australian tour and the World T20 that India will host in MarchApril next year. Dhoni,

Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth, had a disappointing start to their campaign at the BWF Super Series Finals as they suffered straight-game defeats on the opening day of the prestigious event here on Wednesday. World No.2 Saina seemed to struggle with her ankle injury as she went down 14-21, 6-21 against Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in a women’s singles match which lasted 35 minutes. The World Championship silver medallist will play World No.1 Carolina Marin in another Group A match on Thursday. World No. 9 Kidambi Srikanth, who had reached the finals of Indonesia Masters Grand Prix Gold last week, suffered a 13-21, 13-21 loss against Japan’s Kento Momota in a men’s singles Group B match at the Hamdan Sports Complex. Okuhara zoomed to a 5-1 lead early on but Saina soon engaged her rival on long rallies using her tosses and drops and also judged the shuttle well in these

The Indian grabbed the lead when Okuhara hit wide but Okuhara caught the Indian at the forecourt and then with a smash moved into the interval with a slender 1110 lead. Saina stumbled on a few unforced errors after the break, which allowed Okuhara to lead 17-12. Gujarat gaining popularity in defence manufacturing sector Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

Manufacturing is considered Gujarat’s strength, but the state figured nowhere on the defence manufacturing map of India two years back. The scenario is set to change drastically as the state has now caught the fancy of private companies engaged in manufacturing defence equipments. As many as 22 licences have been granted for setting up defence manufacturing units in Gujarat, home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. If everything goes as planned, Gujarat will

be manufacturing a host of defence equipment including light and medium artillery guns, armoured vehicles, medium tanks, helicopters, aircrafts and their parts among other things. Anil Ambani’s Reliance Defence Systems and Pipavav Defence and Offshore Engineering, AMW Motors, Asteria Aerospace, Fedders Lloyd Corporation and Modest Infrastructure have already received industrial licences for setting up their units in Gujarat. Among other prominent players in pipeline include Adani Group’s Adani De-

fence Systems. This assumes importance as Gujarat managed to bag only five licences for establishing defence and explosive manufacturing units between 2001 and 2014. Only Pipavav Defence, erstwhile Pipavav Shipyard Ltd, was the only major name to have its unit in the state. As per the data available with the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, over 121 industrial licences in India have been cleared for the private players under `Make In India’ progamme to promote the defence manufacturing sector.

After Gujarat poll debacle, sidelined leader is BJP’s ‘poster boy’ Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

A sidelined leader who was once a close confidante of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emerged as the new ‘poster boy’ of the BJP in Gujarat, signalling growing dissent in the party after its debacle in the recent local body polls. Posters carrying pictures of former party general secretary Sanjay Joshi and a call to bring the sidelined leader back to “save the party” have surfaced in constituencies of BJP chief Amit Shah and chief minister Anandiben Patel in Ahmedabad. The local body polls, which saw the opposition Congress sweep rural Gujarat and also make visible dents in the BJP’s urban bastions, was seen as a referendum on the party’s state and central leadership. The pro-Joshi posters with the message “Sanjay Joshi lao, BJP bhachao” (Bring back Sanjay Joshi to save the BJP) have been put up at public places in Shah’s constituency Naranpura and Patel’s constituency Ghatlodia. Joshi, a close

aide-turned-bête-noire of Modi, was removed from the party ahead of the BJP national executive meet in Mumbai in 2012 over a sex CD controversy. Despite his reinstatement, the once powerful leader now remains sidelined in the BJP under the leadership of Modi and Shah. “It is déjà-vu for the Gujarat BJP. Following losses in the by-elections in 2000 under the leadership of Keshubhai Patel, the party looked weak and

Modi was brought in,” said a senior party leader, who is also Joshi’s sympathiser. But under chief minister Anandiben Patel, who took over after Modi moved to Delhi as Prime Minister, the party “lost its rural ground for the first time in over a decade”, the leader said. “The posters indicate that Gujarat BJP workers are feeling the need for a strong leader,” he said. Assembly elections in the state are due in 2017.
