Elon Musk on Saturday revealed the third season of ‘Twitter Files,’ which claimed that top Twitter executives suppressed and censored former US President Donald Trump in the days before the 2020 election, finally deplatforming him on January 8, 2021 -- two days after the storming of the Capitol Hill that left five dead. Independent journalist and author Matt Taibbi shared the ‘Twitter Files Part 3’, saying there were erosion of standards within the company in months before January 6, “decisions by highranking executives to violate their own policies, and more, against the backdrop of ongoing, documented interaction with agencies”. Musk replied to him, saying “election interference by social media companies obviously undermines the public’s faith in democracy and is wrong”. “Unequivocally true. The evidence is clear and voluminous,” he added. According

Malaysia’s unemployment fell to the lowest level since the Covid-19 pandemic in October, reaching 602,000 persons, official data showed. The unemployment rate in October remained at 3.6 per cent, 0.3 percentage points higher than the prepandemic level of 3.3 per cent in February 2020, the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said in a statement on Friday. According to the DOSM, the optimistic labour force performance in October reflected the nation’s steady economic fundamentals, resulting from continuously growing economic and social activities, It was coupled with ongoing policy support to buffer the impact of the rising cost of living and reduce the negative risks associated with lingering geopolitical unrest and tightening external financial conditions. The domestic and international tourism was boosted by increasing tourist arrivals.

to Taibbi, Twitter executives removed Trump in part over what one executive called the “context surrounding”: actions by Trump and supporters “over the course of the election and frankly last 4+ years”. “The bulk of the internal debate leading to Trump’s ban took place in those three January days (January 6-8). However, the intellectual framework was laid in the months preceding the Capitol riots,” he mentioned in his Twitter thread. Taibbi said that as the election approached, “senior executives -- perhaps under pressure from federal agencies, with whom they met more as time progressed -- increasingly struggled with rules, and began to speak of ‘vios’ as pretexts to do what they’d likely have done anyway”.

On How To Counter BJP

Since 2014, the BJP’s intellectual and political opponents have, too often, chosen to comfort themselves after each BJP win with a series of consoling fantasies. The BJP wins because of EVM-tampering. The BJP wins purely on money power. The BJP wins because of Hindutva. The BJP wins because voters don’t know what’s good for them; if they did, they would vote for Rahul Gandhi. The BJP won in Gujarat because AAP divided the anti-BJP vote. There is truth, sometimes a lot of truth, to many of these claims. An asymmetric access to corporate money power (now legalised in the form of electoral bonds) is a large factor in the BJP’s dominance (as it once was in Congress dominance); the entry of AAP did divide the antiBJP vote in Gujarat; Hindu majoritarianism has, on several occasions, helped win elections; the normalisation of that majoritarianism says as much about the electorate as its representatives. The trouble is that each claim is taken to an absurd extreme, and other facts or phenomena are simply wished away. The net result is a refusal to properly confront the reality of BJP dominance, and thus to be capable of actually challenging it. The truly salient story of this Gujarat election is not Opposition division, but BJP hegemony. After 27 years of incumbency, the BJP won not just its highest ever voteshare in Gujarat, but its highest in any state election anywhere. A united Opposition will not defeat an incumbent that wins 52.5% of votes cast. The BJP’s vote-share was comparable to that of the Left Front in West Bengal at its 1980s peak. The Congress won 17 seats in Gujarat. If we were to take the seats in which they finished second, and give them every single AAP, or for that matter AIMIM, vote, their tally would rise to 33, and the BJP’s would fall to 140. It would still be by some distance the Congress’ worst-ever performance in the state. While Narendra Modi is PM, Gujarat is the closest thing India has to a one-party state, even more than Andhra Pradesh or Odisha. The fusion of Hindutva, Gujarati sub-nationalism, favouriteson-as-PM and charismatic authority that Modi embodies in Gujarat is without obvious - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara precedent in Indian history.

SPORTS - BUSINESS India vs Bangladesh 3rd ODI: IND beats BAN by 224 runs; Kishan slams 210, Kohli hits 44th century Agency News : Mirpur Indian bowlers got the job done quickly as they folded Bangladesh for just 182 runs, inflicting their biggest loss in ODI history. India won the final tie of the series by 227 runs, but they lost the series 1-2. Earlier in the match, Ishan Kishan slammed a double ton, Virat Kohli scored a ton as India piled a gigantic 409/8 in 50 overs after being invited to bat first by Bangladesh in the final ODI. In response, Bangladesh got off to a flying start but lost Anamul Haque for 8. Shortly Mohammed Siraj got rid of Litton Das for 29. Axar then picked his second wicket, removing Mushfiqur Rahman for 7. Umran

Malik trapped Yasir Ali LBW for 25. Kuldeep Yadav brought an end to Shakib Al Hasan’s resistance as he was cleaned up for 43. Washington Sundar removed Mahmudullah for 20 in his first over. Shardul Thakur then removed Afif Hossain for 8 in the next over. The pacer then packed Mehidy Hasan for 3. Meanwhile, Ishan reached the 200-run mark milestone in 126 deliveries. He was dismissed for 210, which came in just 131 balls.

The two matches in the oneday series have not been devoid of the twists and turns associated with the limited overs game. A one-wicket win in the first match was followed by a last-ball finish with only one wicket remaining in the second. Bangladesh’s series victory may have reduced the final game to a dead rubber but India will not miss the opportunity to experiment on their batting order with the World Cup less than a year away. India will be without their regular captain Rohit Sharma, who has returned home to seek medical advice on his thumb. Kuldeep Sen and Deepak Chahar are also unavailable for Saturday’s ODI while Kuldeep

Yadav has been added to the squad. While Mirpur’s wicket always has something in it for the bowlers, Chittagong has helped the batters. Expect tall scores from both teams on Saturday. It will be a test of India’ resource depth without firstchoice reserves like Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson. One bright spot has been Shreyas Iyer’s form in the 50- over version. He may have issues with the short ball overseas but in subcontinent conditions he has been consistent recording six half-centuries and a career-best 113 not out at a strike rate of 92.63 in his last 11 innings. Iyer will perhaps have to compete with Surya, Samson and Deepak Hooda for a slot in the middle order.

Pakistan’s Abrar Ahmed made a stunning Test debut by claiming seven for 114 to bowl out England for 281 on a frenetic opening day of the second Test on Friday. Pakistan were 107/2 in reply, with skipper Babar Azam leading their bid for a series-levelling victory with a fluent 61 not out. Saud Shakeel was on 32 at the other end when bad light stopped play. Pakistan are still 174 behind but will be happy with how they have bounced back from the defeat in the opening Test in Rawalpindi. “I will not forget this day,” Abrar told Sky Sports via an interpreter. “I want to win this match for Pakistan and also do well in the coming matches. Didier Deschamps was 13 years old and Gareth Southgate two years younger when France last met England in a World Cup match. That was in 1982 in a group game in Bilbao where Bryan Robson famously scored within 30 seconds, the fastest goal for a long time, in England’s 3-1 victory. It’s surprising that these two traditional rivals haven’t played each other in a World Cup match since then despite the absences of one or the other from the 1990 and 1994 tournaments. But now both teams have improved by leaps and bounds. France, the reigning champion, have sailed through this tournament with a sort of airy inevitability: breezily scoring four after seeing their pride pricked

seam to start to see what was required. Variations were the key on this pitch.” A bespectacled spinner mowing down the top half of England’s explosive batting line-up in the first session of his debut Test is hardly what visiting captain Ben Stokes would have expected after he won the toss and elected to bat. This is the first time when all 10 wickets have gone to Pakistan’s leg spinners — Abrar 7 and Zahid Mahmood 3. Pakistan opted for a spin heavy attack while rejigging the squad.

by Australia, comfortably beating Denmark, losing to Tunisia with most key players missing, and then expertly packing off Poland in the Round of 16. Such serene progress bodes well, particularly given that — by the time the group stage ended — France had lost so many players to injury that coach Deschamps had grown so weary of trying to replace them that he simply stopped. It seemed a risk at the time, but it turns out that the absence of Paul Pogba.

Hema Malini was expecting CAT is a gripping slow-burn Esha Deol while filming thriller powered by a blistering ‘Satte Pe Satta’ Randeep Hooda Agency News : Mumbai

The Punjab in CAT is not one that has been romantically fed to us for decades. No meet-cute in sarson ka khet. No boisterous, stereotypical men-will-be-men banter chugging down Patiala pegs and breaking into bhangra. No cutting away the conversation to reference lassi and paratha or given the season now, sarson da saag and makki di roti. What we have instead is Punjab as it is. A state that has fought insurgency for many years and still continues to battle rebellious voices within, most arising out of the tricky politics of the North as well as a fallout of the drug menace that has unfortunately come to define the state for decades. It is in this trigger-happy terrain of

deceit and double-cross that Gary aka Gurnaam, played with intense quietude by Randeep Hooda, is taken back to his painful past in the pilot episode. As a teenager, Gary operated as a CAT, a reference to infiltrators planted by the police in rebel groups during the height of separatist insurgency in the state decades ago. Having lost his parents to a double murder, the echoes of which reappear in his present, Gary becomes Gurnaam, living an under-the-radar life as he brings up

his much-younger siblings. When the ever-growing tentacles of the region’s drug mafia, under the aegis of its all-powerful female politician (played with steely menace by Geeta Aggarwal Sharma) threatens to claim his brother, Gurnaam comes out of the shadows to become a CAT once more. CAT hits the ground running, but then effectively slows its pace to become a slowburn thriller. Throughout its eight episodes, showrunner Balwinder Singh Janjua keeps the viewer guessing which side of the ethical divide all its players — good, bad, ugly — are on. For in this land where gaana flows as easily as guns — at one point a Honey SinghHarrdy Sandhu hybrid is told almost laughingly by a gangster.

Veteran Bollywood actress Hema Malini recalled shooting in Kashmir for the 1982 action-comedy film ‘Satte Pe Satta’ and said the most special thing about it was that she was expecting Esha Deol. She said: “Everyone likes this movie. I enjoyed it a lot while shooting. I got to know that there are 7 brothers in the movie, and all the actors who were playing the role of these 7 brothers namely Sachin, Shakti Kapoor, Kanwaljit, and Sudhir, etc, all used to be very mischievous in the sets, and big brother was the bossy one. It was all very interesting. My first scene was when I entered he said “I only have one brother.” She added more about the entire shooting experience, saying: “But eventually, they came into the house one after another and created chaos in the house by throwing things, and I got shocked, considering that he lied to me and has seven brothers, not one. All these scenes were amazing. The most beautiful thing about ‘Satte pe Satta’ was that I was expecting Esha. “ Hema is coming with her daughter Esha Deol on the singing reality show ‘Indian Idol 13’ where she enjoyed performances dedicated to her and talked about her movies and shared a few interesting stories and anecdotes. Hema is a trained Bharatanatyam dancer and she worked in a number of hit films such as ‘Johnny Mera Naam’, ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’, ‘Raja Jani’, ‘Dard’, ‘Kudrat’, ‘Andaz’, ‘Hum Dono’, ‘Prem Nagar’, ‘Jugnu’, among others. She acted opposite many superstars like Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, and others. While talking about ‘Satte Pe Satta’, she shared about shooting at different locations in Kashmir and calls the place a ‘paradise’. “This movie’s shoot was in Kashmir, and at that time Srinagar was so beautiful as there was a farmhouse near the Oberoi hotel, and that’s where we stayed. We also shot in Gulmarg and Pahalgam. I must say that Kashmir is ‘Jannat’ and the Kashmiri people are lovely.” Judged by Vishal Dadlani, Neha Kakkar, and Himesh Reshammiya, ‘Indian Idol 13’ airs on Sony Entertainment Televsion.

Revenue collection by Calcutta Customs may touch Rs 30,000 crore

Agency News : New Delhi Revenue collection by Calcutta Customs may touch Rs 30,000 crore in this fiscal, registering a 29 per cent growth over the previous year. In 202122, Calcutta Customs, which has jurisdiction over Bengal, Sikkim and the Andamans, had collected Rs 22,900 crore revenue, chief commissioner Anil Gupta said. “There has been an all round buoyancy in tax collection this year, mostly from imports,” Gupta said at the sidelines of an event to commemorate the 60th year of the enactment of the

Customs Act, 1962 in Calcutta on Friday. Calcutta Customs jurisdiction manages border trade with four countries, most notably Bangladesh and Nepal, apart from China. Its areas also include the international airport at Dum Dum in Calcutta, shipping ports at Haldia and Calcutta and land port at Petrapole border with Bangladesh, the largest land port in Asia. While collection from this zone is going up significantly, there is unlikely to be a large spike in overall collection from customs duty projected by the government. The Union budget had set a target of collecting Rs 2.13 lakh crore from customs duty in 202223. India’s overall tax collection is, however, expected to go up by Rs 4 lakh crore, mainly aided by collection from direct tax. In fact, the Centre is expecting a moderation in overall indirect tax.

Salaam Venky, starring Kajol, comes across as packaged despite being an inspiring true story Agency News : Mumbai Talking about Whose Life Is It, Anyway? (1981), Roger Ebert writes, ‘The Dreyfuss character cannot participate any longer in the two arenas that made his life worth living: His artistry, and his sexuality.… I could not accept the movie’s conclusion, which is that the Dreyfuss character’s decision to die was, for him, the correct decision. More to the point, I didn’t think the movie successfully made the argument.… I believe that a person has a legal right to die. But

I do not believe that the character in Whose Life Is It, Anyway? has a sufficient reason to die. He has his intelligence, his memory, his eyes and ears and speech. There is life left for him to live.’ Unlike, Ken Harrison (Richard Dreyfuss) in the 1981 film, Venky (Vishal Jethwa) in Salaam Venky has little to live for. Euthanasia, for him, would probably be a dignified way to go. I bring this up not only because the two films deal with a similar subject – euthanasia – but also because despite being a work of fiction, the arguments Whose Life Is It, Anyway?
