The disclosure is likely to ignite a fresh row around the controversial encounter. Ishrat’s family, since the encounter took place in 2004, has been alleging that it was a botched up operation by the Gujarat Police. Jahan, a 19-year-old resident of Mumbra, was killed in an alleged fake encounter in 2004 by the Gujarat Police on the outskirts of Ahmedabad. Although the Gujarat Police had claimed that Jahan, Javed Sheikh, Zeeshan Johar and Amjad Ali Rana, were LeT operatives who had plotted to kill the then state chief minister Narendra Modi. An investigation carried out by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) later rejected the claim and concluded the encounter had been staged by former Gujarat Police Deputy Inspector General D G Vanzara. The CBI, which took over probe from the Gujarat High Court appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT), had filed charge sheet in August 2013 saying that the encounter was fake and executed in the joint operation by the city crime branch and Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB). CNN-IBN got in touch with Ishrat’s sister, Musarrat Jahan and asked her what she thinks of Headley’s disclosure. “We are fighting a legal battle for the past 11 years. The investigation in India (all of them) have proven that the encounter was fake and I believe that my sister is innocent. Who is this Headley? Ye sab political saazish hai. Facebook had met with severe criticism for its programme, which aimed at providing basic Internet access to people in partnership with telecom operators. Critics saw this as violation of the principle of net neutrality that states that entire Internet should be available to everyone on equal terms as Free Basics allowed access to selected websites. “Free Basics is no longer available to people in India,” a Facebook spokesperson said in an emailed response. The service was available in India with Reliance Communications. In December, RCom put the service on hold following a Telecom Regulator Authority of India’s directive to that effect.

Agency | Mumbai Telecom major Vodafone India on Wednesday launched its 4G services in Mumbai after it had recently launched the services in Delhi-NCR, Kerala, Karnataka and Kolkata, bringing it on par with Bharti Airtel who already launched its 4G services pan-India. The telecom operator acquired 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard spectrum in mentioned cities in the February 2014 auctions. These circles together contribute close to 50% of its total data revenue, making it the largest data revenue market for the firm. Its 4G network will cover prominent business and residential corridors of western suburbs and southern Mumbai in a phased manner. The roll-out will be completed across the city and New Mumbai by next month. The telecom giant will retain the 3G pricing till the completion of 4G network across Mumbai and New Mumbai. On being asked if the price offer was an introductory offer, Sunil Sood, managing director and CEO of Vodafone India said, “We do not know whether it is part of introductory offer, but for the moment up to March 31, the price will the same as 3G. Anybody with existing 3G service can upgrade to 4G.”

The police have seized oxygen cylinders, LPG cylinders and fire safety devices from the gang, along with a complete recovery of Rs 19.3 lakh.

Anandiben Patel asks state MPs to raise issues of Gujarat in budged session
Agency | New Delhi Several members in a parliamentary panel have pitched for quick implementation of the Centre’s proposed move to double salary and allowances of MPs and insisted that report of any government-constituted committee on the matter must be channelled through it. At a meeting of the Joint Committee on Salaries and Allowances of Members of Parliament on Wednesday, a number of MPs favoured routing of report of any independent mechanism, being set up to review salary and allowances of MPs, through the panel, which draws its power from Parliament, sources said.
They said before the report is handed over to the government it should be vetted by the committee. The members also insisted their pay and perks should be equal to that of the Cabinet Secretary, they said. The Centre had in September last proposed to constitute a three-member Emoluments Commission to determine salary and allowances of Members of Parliament and it was endorsed at the two-day All India Whips Conference on September 29 and 30. The proposal had come in the backdrop of a controversy over a parliamentary panel’s recommendations in June last to double the pay and perks of lawmakers.
