Imran Khan”: Pakistan Supreme Court Calls Arrest “Illegal”

Agency News: New Delhi

Imran Khan’s arrest by Pakistan’s top anti-corruption body is illegal and he should be released immediately, the country’s Supreme Court said today amid violent protests by supporters of the former Prime Minister who faces corruption allegations. Mr Khan is under the custody of the National Accountability Bureau. The order to bring Mr Khan, 70, to the Supreme Court was issued by a three-member bench of Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar and Justice Athar Minallah. The Supreme Court, after hearing Mr Khan’s request for relief, strongly criticised the NAB for arresting the former Prime Minister from the Islamabad High Court’s premises, where he had come to appear in a case. The Supreme Court said Mr Khan should return to the Islamabad High Court at 10 am tomorrow and follow whatever the high court decides. Only 10 of his supporters will be allowed to

meet him, the Supreme Court said. Mr Khan has alleged he was tortured in the NAB custody and was not allowed to even use the washroom. The former cricketing superstar, who remains popular in Pakistan, alleged he was given an injection to induce a slow heart attack. Mr Khan’s arrest follows months of political crisis and came hours after the powerful military rebuked the former international cricketer for alleging that a senior officer had been involved in a plot

to kill him. Some protesters took out their wrath on the military, torching the residence of the corps commander in Lahore and laying siege at the entrance to the army’s general headquarters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi. Pakistan politicians have frequently been arrested and jailed since the country’s founding in 1947, but few have so directly challenged a military that has staged at least three coups and had ruled for more than three decades.

Karnataka elections Exit polls give Congress an edge, 2018-like situation seems on the cards

Agency News: Bangalore

Exit polls have given the Congress an edge in the Karnataka elections, with most predicting a 2018-like situation where a hung Assembly had triggered a Congress-JDS deal for government formation. However, unlike in 2018, when the BJP had emerged as the single-largest party, the exit polls have largely predicted that the Congress could be at the head of the pack this time. While one survey each gave a simple majority to the ruling BJP and the Opposition Congress, all others predicted a hung Assembly with the Congress winning the most number of seats. News NationCGS gave 114 seats to the BJP, two more than the halfway mark in the 224-member Assembly, 86 to the Congress, 21 to the Janata Dal Secular and three “others” who could be Independents or candidates from smaller parties. Times Now gave a simple majority to the Congress, predicting it would win 113 seats. This

survey said the BJP could be way behind with 85 seats and the JDS 23, with three in the “others” category. Four of six other exit polls gave an edge to the Congress, which is seeking a return to power by capitalising on the anti-incumbency against the BJP government headed by Basavaraj Bommai and the allegations of widespread corruption. The remaining two exit polls predicted that the BJP could emerge as the single-largest party. All the exit polls have given the JDS just as many seats as it would take for it to emerge as the kingmaker like in 2018. Back then, the Congress had been the first off the blocks despite finishing second, clinching a post-poll alliance with the JDS by offering HD.

Modi’s predecessor Manmohan Singh was hosted at two state dinners at the White House. Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee have all been honoured with state dinners. But the invitation to Modi, who was shunned by Western nations for years after the 2002 Gujarat riots and denied a US visa in 2005 under the terms of a law that bars entry of foreigners who have committed “particularly severe violations of religious freedom”, triggered questions.

KL Rahul undergoes successful surgery on injured right thigh

Agency News: New Delhi

KL Rahul has undergone a successful surgery on his injured right thigh and has “officially started his road to recovery”. The senior batter took to social media on Tuesday to provide an update. He also thanked the medical staff and doctors and promised to get back on the field soon.

The 31-year-old suffered the thigh injury while fielding for Lucknow Super Giants against Royal Challengers Bangalore earlier this month. He was subsequently ruled out of the tournament and next month’s World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval. “Hi everyone, I just got done with my surgery. It was successful,” Rahul wrote on his social media handles. “A big thank you to the doctors

and medical staff for making sure I was comfortable and everything went smoothly,” the LSG skipper said. Rahul, who was replaced by Ishan Kishan in the Indian squad for the WTC final, added that he was “determined” to return to the field. “I am officially on the road to recovery now. Mumbai Indians had no trouble chasing down the 200-run target set by RCB on Tuesday but captain

Rohit Sharma was again dismissed for 7 — his fifth single-digit score on the trot this IPL. Sanjay Bangar, the RCB batting coach, however, still backs the MI and India captain to come out of his current form ahead of next month’s WTC final in London. “He (Rohit) has been playing for such a long period of time and captaining in all formats for India and the franchisee as well, it does take an emotional toll,” Bangar told reporters at the

post-match conference when asked about Rohit’s form.

“But he knows it, he has done it for such a long time. For the sake of Mumbai Indians and for the sake of Indian cricket, we just hope that he returns to his run-scoring normal routine.

“It is very important for us (India) that he fires and does really well in the World Test Championship final.”

Rohit has been enduring a second consecutive poor IPL season, as his average plummeted to 17.36 with just 191 runs to show from 11 matches so far. India take on Australia in the World Test Championship final at The Oval from June 7.

Suryakumar Yadav looked like playing “gully cricket” when he was “toying” with the Royal Challengers Bangalore bowlers in their Indian Premier League match here, feels the legendary Sunil Gavaskar. Suryakumar smashed 83 runs off just 35 balls — his highest IPL score — in a stunning show of 360-degree hitting, to play a vital role in MI’s six-wicket win over RCB here on Tuesday. He hit seven fours and six sixes at a humongous strike rate of 237.14 as MI chased down the target of 200 with 21 balls to spare. “SKY was toying with the bowlers. He gives you a feeling of gully cricket when he’s batting like that. He’s just gotten better with practice and hard work,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports’ Cricket Live. He

also said Suryakumar’s red-hot form rubbed off on youngster Nehal Wadhera (52 not out off 34 balls). The duo strung a partnership of 140 runs to put MI in control. “When you are batting with SKY your confidence is boosted, but the best thing about Wadhera’s innings was that he wasn’t looking to play shots like SKY. The best thing about him is that his balance was superb,” said Gavaskar.

Hours after the Supreme Court’s verdict on the Uddhav Thackeray vs Eknath Shinde-led political crisis in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Thursday came down heavily on the former governor, stating that the “role and assistance” of Bhagat Singh Koshyari in the “hostile takeover of the government” was evident. Stepping up his attack on the Shinde-BJP alliance in the state, the Worli MLA tweeted, “Unconstitutional. Illegal. Immoral. That is the only way to look at mindhe-bjp gaddar sarkar, especially after today’s verdict.” Notably, ‘mindha’ is a Marathi word that means someone who is repressed

with obligations. It’s an attack on Shinde alleging that his faction is under the control of the BJP. Aaditya, who served as a cabinet minister under his father Uddhav’s governance, said in a series of tweets, “The role and assistance of the earlier governor in the hostile take over of the government and suppressing democracy and the constitution is evident. He acted as a Party man, not as a Governor. If there’s any morality and shame left, the unconstitutional cm should resign.

Sachin Pilot to embark on five-day ‘Jan Sangharsh Yatra’ over corruption, paper leaks in Rajasthan

Agency News: Jaipur

Mounting pressure on Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and the Congress’ central leadership in the run-up to the assembly polls, party leader Sachin Pilot will begin his “Jan Sangharsh Yatra” from Ajmer on Thursday, covering nearly 125 km in five days on issues of corruption and paper leaks.

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi addresses the 100th anniversary of Kadwa Patidar Samaj via video message today. Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister conveyed his best wishes on the occasion of Sanatani Shatabdi Mahotsav and mentioned that this is the first time when he got the opportunity to attend a program in the presence of Jagadguru Shankaracharya Swami Sadanand Saraswati ji. The Prime Minister noted the pleasant coincidence of 100 years of Kadwa Patidar Samaj’s service to the society, the 50th year of the youth wing and the 25th year of the women’s wing, and remarked that success and prosperity are assured when the youth and women of society take responsibility on their shoulders. Noting the clear loyalty of the youth and women wing of Shri Akhil Bhartiya Kutch Kadwa Patidar Samaj, the Prime Minister expressed gratitude and thanked the Kadwa Patidar Samaj for including him as a part of the family of Sanatani Shatabdi Mahotsav. “Sanatan is not just a word, it is ever-new, everchanging. It has an inherent desire to better itself from the past and is therefore eternal, immortal”, the Prime Minister said. “The journey of any nation is reflected in the journey of its society”, the Prime Minister remarked as he underlined that the hundred-year-old history of Patidar Samaj and hundred years journey of Shri Akhil Bhartiya Kutch Kadwa Samaj with its futuristic vision is also a medium to understand India and Gujarat. Pointing out the atrocities committed by foreign invaders on India’s society for hundreds of years, the Prime Minister highlighted that the ancestors of the land did not allow their identity to be erased and their faith to be fragmented. “We are seeing the effect of sacrifices of centuries ago in the present generation of this successful society”, the Prime Minister said as he mentioned that the Kutch Kadwa Patidar community are moving forward with their labor and ability in sectors such as timber, plywood, hardware, marble, building material among others. He expressed happiness that the respect and honor for the traditions have only grown year after year and said that the society built its present, and laid the foundation of its future. Reflecting on his political life and association with the society, the Prime Minister recalled working with Kadwa Patidar Samaj on numerous subjects as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. He mentioned the Kutch earthquake and lauded the strength of the community for engaging in relief and reconstruction efforts and said that it always gave him a sense of confidence. Pointing out how Kutch was considered one of the most backward districts of the country where issues of water shortage, starvation, death of animals, migration, and misery had become its identity. “But over the years, together, we have rejuvenated Kutch”, the Prime Minister said as he mentioned the work done to solve the water crisis of Kutch and turning it into a huge tourist destination in the world and said that it is a great example of ‘Sabka Prayas’.

Last month, the Tonk MLA and former deputy of Gehlot held a day-long fast, targeting his own party’s government in Rajasthan for “inaction” in alleged cases of corruption when the BJP ran the state. Pilot will address a gathering

Gehlot and Pilot have been at loggerheads publicly for more than two years.

A total of 3,583 people from Manipur fled to Mizoram after ethnic violence broke out last week, officials said on Thursday. These people were lodged at temporary relief camps across six districts of Mizoram, while many were also given shelter by their relatives, they said. A total of 1,351 people have taken shelter in the Kolasib district, 1,214 people in the Saitual district and 934 others in the Aizawl district, a statement said. The remaining 84 people took shelter in Champhai, Serchhip and Khawzawl districts, it added. Mizoram is already burdened with

Violent clashes broke out in Manipur after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the 10 hill districts on May 3 to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The clashes were preceded by tension over the eviction of Kuki villagers from reserve forest land, which had led to a series of smaller agitations. Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley. Tribals -- Nagas and Kukis -- constitute another 40 per cent of the population and reside in the hill districts.
