Agency News:Agartala The “Bengal model of governance” will be Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) pitch in Tripura elections due next year as Mamata Banerjee’s party seeks to expand its base outside West Bengal. The party set up its state headquarters at Agartala on Monday, two and a half months after it announced a 132-member state committee. While it has

already set up headquarters in at least two other north-eastern states, Assam and Meghalaya, the TMC’s ambition to unseat the BJP in Tripura is also tied to linguistics. Windfall Tax Lets The Cat Out Of The Bag Of Petroleum Companies It was an open secret that the oil companies have been minting money on account of therising crude prices, although they have been dishing out doctored numbers to show losses. Now that the government has decided to enforce a windfall tax on the companies for theundue profits that have accrued to them, this has been officially acknowledged.Last week the government slapped a windfall tax of Rs 23,250 per tonne on crude oil on thebasis of large profits they have been cornering on rising crude oil prices in the internationalmarket. Apart from windfall tax on crude oil, cesses equal to Rs 6 per litre on petrol and Rs13 per litre on diesel have also been imposed on their exports, which have been turning outto be highly profitable for the oil companies to the extent that it started hitting domesticsupplies. It is estimated that the windfall tax would fetch the government upwards of Rs 94,000 crorefor the remainder of the year, indicating the kind of money oil companies have been quietlymaking on the sides. That the news sent oil company stocks tanking by around 10 percent isan indication of the size of the windfall gains these companies have been making. Moody’sestimated government earnings of about $12 billion, which, according to the agency, willhelp offset the negative impact of the reduction in the excise duty on petrol and dieselannounced earlier.By all available indications, the measure will have considerable longevity as the governmenthas made it clear that the windfall tax will remain in force until such time that the crude oilprices stay above $40 a barrel. Despite several negative factors that tend to depress crudemarket, oil is expected to hover around $100 for some time, according to latest calculationsby energy experts. But at the other end of the spectrum, there are forecasts of oil hitting a low of $50 on theback of increasingly threatening recessionary fears. It was actually the scare of recessionthat reversed oil’s relentless climb in the wake of the Ukraine war and the cataclysmicchanges in the energy scene following the enforcement of sanctions against Russia. After hitting a 10-year high of $121.28 per barrel on June 10, the Indian basket of crude oilfell to $103.71 per barrel this week. The average daily price in April was $102.97, rising to109.51 in May and further to $116.01 in June. So far in July, the average price is $109.44per barrel. The Indian basket represents a derived basket consisting of sour grade andsweet grade of crude oil processed in Indian refineries.India has greatly benefited from the purchase of discounted oil from Russia in recent monthsin the wake of the Ukrainian war. In the four months since the outbreak of war, Indianimports of Russia’s Urals crude have picked up over six times compared to 2021 levels, according to reports. The Russian oil has given more bargaining power to Indian companiesin their dealings with Gulf oil companies, particularly Saudi Arabia which has long termcontracts for Indian deliveries. According to published accounts, India imported 212.2 milliontonnes of crude oil in 2021-22, compared with 196.5 million tonnes a year ago. When the government says that the windfall tax will continue as long as the oil price staysabove $40, it is a fair indication of the Indian view that prices will stop their downsidemovement before they reach the trigger. The new tax has prompted rating agencies to viewthe prospects of oil and marketing companies from a negative angle, given that thesecompanies had been making a killing on the higher crude prices. Particularly affected will beIndian petroleum major ONGC, but the private sector leaders, such as Reliance, would alsobe hit badly, as seen by the performance of the stock following the announcement of the tax.The new tariffs would surely put the refiners margins under pressure, but they would still beable to weather the storm as they have already built up sufficient surpluses from the windfallprofit they have been making all this while when international crude prices - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara were on theascendance.

Agency News:New Delhi England managed to eke out a consolation victory in the third and final Twenty20 against India after Suryakumar Yadav almost took his side past the finish line. The right-handed batter hit a blistering 117 off just 55 balls, including 14 fours and six sixes – a testimony to his batting prowess

India needed 21 off the last six balls but Chris Jordan sealed the win for England. Jordan took two wickets in the final three balls as India fell short on 198-9. While Suryakumar was his usual self

Gold prices fell on Monday, lingering near a recent nine-month low, after strong U.S. job market data last week boosted the dollar and the likelihood of another big rate hike by the Federal Reserve. Spot gold was down 0.3% at $1,737.39 per ounce, as of 0930 GMT. U.S. gold futures also dipped 0.3% to $1,736.30. The dollar rose about 0.5% and hovered near a 20-year peak seen on Friday, dimming greenback-priced gold`s appeal among overseas buyers. The jobs report published on Friday tempered some of the recessionary fears that were starting to cast doubts over how far the Fed could go in terms of tightening, said Ricardo Evangelista,

A strong labour market is often considered a healthy economic indicator and gives the central bank more ammunition for another big hike, in turn pushing gold lower, analysts said.Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic said on Friday he “fully” supports another three quarters of a percentage point rate hike at the Fed`s next policy meeting later this month. However, growing pessimism over the state of some economies in Asia and geopolitical instability to some extent, mitigate gold`s losses, as bullion remains the go-to safe haven during times of trouble, Evangelista added.Central banks in Canada and New Zealand are expected.

When I was training and shooting for it, I totally forgot that I am an actor. I genuinely enjoy playing sports, and I played quite a lot while I was growing up. Although I never represented my school at a very high level for sports, I was always a part of a new sports batch or learned from the coach. I tried gymnastics, basketball, volleyball, badminton, everything possible, and probably this is the reason that I started gravitating to these kinds of films. Cricket was the only game I never played. I have only seen it.
