Govt’s Pegasus Denial Amounts To Confirmaton Of Complicity

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta’s plea to the Supreme Court hearing the Pegasus snoopingcase amounts to virtually admitting that the government has things to hide. The Modigovernment’s approach in this highly sensitive issue has been suspect right from the beginning and every new development is an indirect acknowledgment that it is not above blame. If it was ready to come clean, it had several occasions to do so, which would have averted the logjam in parliament that is costing the nation dearly. Prime Minister Modi keeps lamenting about the loss of legislative time, but is doing precious little to clear the air so that normalcy can be restored. The government strategy is to somehow obstruct the Supreme Court proceedings, especially as it got a foretaste of the court’s stand on the first day that the truth has to come out. The brazen attempt to buy time so that it can first avoid the embarrassment in parliament over further adverse remarks by the court has betrayed the government’s complicity. It was shocking that when the entire nation was waiting to hear the government’s response to the Pegasus petitions when the court took up the case, it even failed to send its law officers. This meant that the court had to grant the government time to come back prepared. More diversionary tactics was on show in parliament, when a specific question was asked in the Rajya Sabha by CPI-M member Dr N Sivadasan whether the government has carried out any transaction with Israel’s NSO Group Technologies and ‘if so, the details thereof’. The answer was as much mischievous as it was misleading: the defence ministry has not entered into any transaction with the NSO Group. The defence ministry may not be involved, but that is only a small part of the government, although an important part. There is neither denial nor confirmation whether any other agency of the government, including the most likely home ministry or the IT ministry, was involved. The home ministry under Amit Shah is not known to set store by its commitment towards the protection of individual liberties. Similarly, the IT ministry, particularly under Ravi Shankar Prasad, has shown little respect for privacy and freedom of expression, both of which are technically the primary concern of the ministry. The government has somehow managed to see the monsoon session come to a close, without a discussion on the vexed issue, but it is doubtful if it can be described as an honourable conclusion. The needle of suspicion remains pointed to wherever it was ever since the news of the abuse broke out.The next course of the government action in the Supreme Court is also predictable. The next anchor in the government’s defence is most likely to be the invocation of national security. The Modi government had used this route effectively to stonewall further disclosures about the Rafale deal when the Supreme Court was dealing with a clutch of petitions on the controversial deal, particularly the aspects of the fighter aircraft’s final price and the out ofthe way accommodation of Reliance group interests. When the court overruled the government’s opposition and insisted on specific details, the government invoked confidentiality in the name of national security and submitted theinformation in a sealed envelope. The contents of the envelope have not come out yet, but the announcement of a new probeinto the alleged corruption and favouritism in the fighter deal with India has reopened theissue in France and the French national financial prosecutor’s office is already looking intopossible wrongdoings. The new French investigations have provided a shot in the arm of theopposition campaign against Modi’s Rafale deal, particularly Rahul Gandhi’s relentlessattack against the prime minister for reworking the terms to favour his friends. The resurfacing of the Rafale scandal is yet another manifestation of the fact that it will betruth that triumphs ultimately, an aphorism that we keep invoking at all official functions inand out of context. But there is nothing yet that negates the true import of the ultimate symbol of hope. And just as it is happening to the Rafale deal, the misdeeds in the use of Pegasus to snoopon political rivals, journalists and those who may hold a contrarian opinion cannot be hidden by the - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara labyrinths of secrecy.

“Undid A Mistake Of The Past, Retrospective Tax”: PM Modi Agency News: New Delhi

The government’s move to end retrospective tax signified the undoing of a mistake in made in the past, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today at the annual meeting of the Confederation of Indian Industry or CII. The government last week ended taxes raised for the indirect transfer of Indian assets before May 2012 if companies withdrew pending litigation and gave an undertaking that no damages claims would be filed.“We undid a mistake of the past by removing retrospective tax. It will increase trust between the government and the industry,” PM Modi said at the CII meeting held online. “The feedback and appreciation

from industry in this regard has been great to see.” In 2012, the United Progressive Alliance government controversially changed tax laws retrospectively. International companies which had acquired assets of Indian companies before then were told they had to pay huge amounts. This led to a fierce legal fight between the government and the companies. In what was seen as a swipe at past government, PM Modi said the National Democratic Alliance has taken “bold decisions” on reforms and did not let even the pandemic slow it down.“Talk on the need for reforms in the country has been going on for ages, but no one took any decision. We did. We make and carry out reforms not out of compulsion but out of conviction.

Indian nationals in Afghanistan have been advised to return in view of the escalating violence in the country. Indian firms have been asked to withdraw their employees immediately as security concerns mount amid the advance of Taliban insurgents. There are reports that the Afghanistan government may collapse under Taliban pressure soon. services to many provinces and cities are getting discontinued. All Indian nationals visiting, staying and working in Afghanistan are strongly advised to keep themselves updated on the availability of commercial flights from various parts of Afghanistan and make immediate travel arrangements to return to India before commercial air services are discontinued…,” the security advisory issued on Tuesday said. All Indian nationals have been advised to get themselves registered with the Embassy of India website. The first evacuation flight from Afghanistan arrived in India on Wednesday.

Mayookha’s friend’s rape case: Kerala HC dismisses anticipatory bail plea of accused Agency News: Kochi The Kerala High Court on Wednesday dismissed the anticipatory bail plea of the man accused of raping the friend of Olympian Mayookha Johny and taking the victim’s nude photographs to blackmail her and said if required, he will have to surrender before the police “Bail dismissed. You will have to surrender,” Justice Shircy V said. The accused had contended that the rape complaint was filed five years after the alleged incident occurred — in July 2016 — and claimed it was a blowback of differences between two factions of the Emperor

The police had earlier told the court that the probe was only recently handed over to the Crime Branch on July 5 on the orders of the State Police Chief. Emmanuel Church. The prosecution, on August 2, had vehemently opposed the plea of the accused on the ground that his custodial interrogation was required and his phone

was also to be recovered. The accused – C C Jhonson – had also claimed that he and the victim were part of this church and the rape complaint was filed after he left the church. Johny had held a press conference in June, levelling

serious allegations against the Kerala police and a former official of the state women’s commission in connection with the investigation into the case of rape of her friend in 2016. Johny had alleged that her friend was raped by Johnson.

Schools in Uttar Pradesh Stringent punishment for har‘More electric vehicles than may reopen for classes 6-8 assing women for rejecting Chhattisgarh funding tribal love proposal: Kerala CM conventional ones by 2050’: from September 1 places of worship to prevent Nitin Gadkari conversions: Minister Agency News: Thiruvananthapuram

Agency News: New Delhi

By 2050, there will likely be more electric vehicles than conventional ones in India, Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari said on Tuesday, expecting advances in technology and gains from the government’s efforts to build up a domestic renewable automotive industry to begin paying off.Gadkari was speaking at the HT Auto EV Conclave, where he outlined the government’s incentives and urged industry stakeholders to help make India “the world’s largest EV manufacturing and supplying hub”.“Both battery electric vehicle and fuelcell vehicle technologies are complimentary to each other and are all set to overtake fossilrun automotive by 2050,” said the minister, before adding: “Indigenous battery tech, localisation of components and huge domestic demand would make EVs the most affordable means of transport in coming

Agency News:New Delhi years”. Gadkari said batteries were the most important component of an electric vehicle and constituted at least 50% of the upfront cost, and added this was an area where his ministry was encouraging innovation. “I am pursuing research for its (lithium-ion battery) substitute such as zinc-ion, aluminium-ion and sodium-ion batteries. Low cost raw materials can be made available from scrapping of old vehicles,” he said. “Metals like aluminium, iron and lithium can also be extracted.” The government last year rolled out a production.

With schools across Uttar Pradesh set to reopen for classes 9-12 from next week, the Yogi Adityanath-led state government is now likely to allow reopening of schools for lower standards as well. According to Hindustan Times’ sister publication Adityanath has directed officials to begin admission procedure for classes 6-8 in schools under the Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Council. Classes can resume from September 1 after analysing the current situation of the coronavirus pandemic in Uttar Pradesh,” the chief minister was quoted as saying

in a review meeting of Team9, a government panel leading the state’s fight against the coronavirus disease (Covid-19). The panel is headed jointly by state health minister Suresh Khanna and medical education minister Jai Pratap Singh. Earlier, the state government had given permission for secondary schools to resume offline teaching for classes 9-12 from August 16. For this, CM Adityanath issued instructions to vaccinate all students aged 18 and above by organising vaccination camps on school/ university/college premises. Schools had reopened earlier this year but the resumption turned out to be brief.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday warned of stringent action against those indulging in atrocities on women for rejecting love proposals. He said the police would keep a tab on such people, who have the history of harassing and stalking women, and continue monitoring them to ensure that they were not planning anything extreme against them for rejecting the proposal. The Chief Minister’s statement in the state Assembly assumes significance in the wake of a series of brutal murders of young women by spurned lovers or whose love proposals were rejected by them, reported in the state in recent times. The latest among them was the death of a 24-year-old dental college student, who was shot dead by a man who was her social media friend once, in Kothamangalam in Ernakulam district. He had shot the woman dead using a pistol before killing himself after barging into the house, where she was staying, in broad daylight on July 30. Bringing the incident to the

notice of the House, Thrikkakara legislator P T Thomas (Congress) wanted the intelligence wing of the state police to be more vigilant to ensure the safety of girls and women in the society. Vijayan assured the House that the police would not take any soft stand towards those who harass women in the name of love. “Police are already taking stringent measures to ensure severe punishment to those who harass women for refusing love proposals,” he said. The CM also wanted the investigators to take into account the psychological aspect of those attempting to trap women via cyber platforms.

Agency News: New Delhi Chhattisgarh industry minister Kawasi Lakma said on Wednesday that the government has been funding tribal communities to develop and maintain their places of worship, known as Devgudis, to ensure they are not lured into religious conversion. Lakma, a senior Congress leader from Bastar region with a large tribal population, also claimed that no tribal had converted to Christianity during the past 2.5 years of Congress rule in the state. Lakhma was responding in the state assembly to a question by a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA, who claimed that religious

conversions were taking place in Bastar. “During the 15 years of BJP-rule, 30 churches were constructed (in Sukma district) but not a single one came up in the last two years. To ensure that conversions do not take place and people do not visit churches, the state government has been providing ₹5 lakh (each) to ‘Devgudis’ and ₹10 lakh to ‘Ghotuls’ in Bastar… We want our temples and Devgudis to be in good shape .In the last two years, no religious conversion has taken place,” Lakhma said. For the last one year, administration in districts of Bastar region have been funding beautification and maintenance of Devgudis.

Rohidas remembers the painful blow vividly. But he’s suffered worse on a hockey field. The reason India’s first rusher took time to get back on his feet was to give the team breathing space in the midst of a flurry of penalty corners. “After the game, I spoke to my mother. She sounded worried for the first time. She watches all my games and knows the risk I take being the first rusher. Even if I get hit, I never show the opponents that I am hurt. That day I made it seem worse than it was because we needed a few seconds to regroup. My mother asked me if I was hurt. The second charge was that she refused to train with the Indian team,” WFI president Brij Bhushan Singh told The Indian Express. “Another charge against her is that the Indian Olympic Association singlet, which is approved, was not worn by her.

She instead wore her sponsor Nike’s singlet. She was not supposed to wear that.” When asked if this was the first time the federation has had an issue with Vinesh, Singh conceded that earlier transgressions were overlooked due to the stature of the athlete.

Viability of telecom sector: Govt likely to push for floor price Officials in the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) said a floor price, which may even be set informally, will act like a support mechanism akin to the FRP (fair and remunerative price) for the sugarcane industry. Agency News: New Delhi TO ENSURE sectoral viability, the government is likely to push for a floor price for services provided by telecom companies and also consider other options such as interest free moratorium on spectrum payments and encashment of bank guarantees. Officials in the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) said a floor price, which may even be set informally, will

act like a support mechanism akin to the FRP (fair and remunerative price) for the sugarcane industry. “The floor price could be hiked by up to Rs 30 per user,” the official said. The DoT and the Finance Ministry are said to be in agreement on the floor price proposal, but they will need to bring the telecom regulator on board. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has so far not entertained the idea of a floor

price for telecom services. Officials said the proposal to allow moratorium on spectrum payments and encashment of guarantees are, however, being opposed within sections of the government. Spectrum usage charges for telecom companies are significant — in 2020-21, the DoT received Rs 5,205 crore and an additional Rs 2,500 crore following the Supreme Court judgement on Adjusted Gross Revenues. Bharti Airtel and

Vodafone India (Vi) provide bank guarantees of about Rs 6,000 crore a year to the DoT. The DoT has, in discussions with the Finance Ministry and other departments, proposed that loss-making Vi be allowed to convert its debt to equity, senior government officials said. Banks are said to be on board with the plan, they said.

Dry spell continues: Gujarat CM orders re- Vadodara: SRP personnel accused of rape remanded in judilease of water from dams to save crops cial custody The release said that the CM has taken the “sensitive” decision in the interest of farmers to save their standing crops owing to stretching dry spell in monsoon. Sunvilla News: Gandhinagar

As lull in the monsoon rain is getting stretched with every passing day, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani Tuesday decided to immediately release water from dams or reservoirs for irrigation purpose to save standing crops in the state, said an official release. The CM has ordered the release of the water while reserving the water stock for drinking purpose in dams or reservoirs for the period up to September, the release added. The release said that the CM has taken the “sensitive” decision in the interest of farmers to save their standing crops owing to stretching dry spell in monsoon. “While reserving the water stock for drinking purpose in dams/ reservoirs for the period upto September 30, the CM has given instructions to water resources department to release remaining water with immediate effect

to save standing crop of farmers,” it said. As per the release, five lakh hectare land of the state government will be benefitted by this decision. It added that out of the 141 dams of Suarashtra, the water for irrigation purpose will be given from 88 dams catering to 60,000 hectare land. In North Gujarat, water will be given from Dharoi dam covering 15,000 hectare land. In Central Gujarat, Mahi river’s command area will be provided 6,000 cusec water from Kadana reservoir. Also, water will

be provided to irrigate 2.10 lakh hectare land from 11 reservoirs including Panam. In South Gujarat, 1.10 lakh hectare land will get water for irrigation from six reservoirs of the region. Owing to the stretched dry spell in the state during peak monsoon season, a number of farmers are worried even as dams and groundwater resources have not been replenished to irrigate their crops. The storage capacity of dams in Gujarat is also less than the corresponding figure of last year. Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel too has earlier this month expressed concern over the lull in rain during the monsoon season and less water level in Sardar Sarovar or Narmada dam which is the main source of water for Gujarat. In July, the CM had decided to provide electricity to agriculturists for two additional hours while making it available to them for 10 hours instead of eight hours.
