SC stays arrest for Teesta Setalvad till Today Ahmedabad Observing that activist Teesta Setalwad was not cooperating in the probe, the Gujarat High Court today rejected her anticipatory bail plea in a case of embezzlement of funds meant for a museum at Gulbarg society, devastated in the 2002 riots. “They cannot be armoured with full fledged anticipatory bail when applicant did not cooperate with the investigation,” Justice J B Pardiwala said, turning down the bail applications of Setalwad and her husband Javed Anand, paving the way for their possible arrest. The court rejected Setalwad’s lawyer’s prayer for a stay on its order to allow them time to move the Supreme Court.

Maintaining that their custodial interrogation was “in public interest” and “in the interest of justice”, the court said Setalwad had

filed the pre-arrest bail plea just to avoid custodial interrogation. “The applicant has never cooperated with the probe and whenever she

was called for questioning she insisted that cops ask her everything in writing and also maintained that she had said everything in her affidavits before the sessions court,” the court said. The court also said that affidavits by witnesses had brought out several “shocking facts” about the applicant having used the funds collected in the name of riot victims and meant for the poor and needy people for personal and materialistic purposes. As Additional Advocate General P K Jani submitted that the state government had no objection to anticipatory bail being given to three other accused– Tanvir Jafri, son of slain Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, Chairman of Gulbarg

Four new faces likely in AAP Cabinet New Delhi Manish Sisodia is all set to be the deputy chief minister in Arvind Kejriwal government which is likely to have four new faces this time, Aam Aadmi Party sources said today. Barring Sisodia, who is a close confidant of Kejriwal, and Satyendra Jain, the rest four- Rakhi Birla, Saurabh Bharadwaj, Somnath Bharti, Girish Soni -- who were in AAP's earlier cabinet -- are unlikely to make it this time. The sources said the party has decided to induct Jitendra Tomar (Tri Nagar), Kapil Mishra (Karawal Nagar), Sandeep Kumar (Sultanpuri Majra) and Asim Ahmed Khan (Matia Mahal)- the only minority

face- in the ministry. The four are also first time legislators. The new government may not have a woman member. The list will be sent to Lt Governor Najeeb Jung today, they added. The new Cabinet

will be sworn in on Saturday. Sisodia was de facto number two in the previous AAP government and had handled important portfolios like education, urban development, PWD, land and buildings. Jain, a

two-time MLA from Shakur Basti who handled the health portfolio in the previous AAP government, is another minister who is likely to be retained. "There is a lot of brain storming going on in the party.

Modi, Kejriwal have chai pe charcha; PM to miss swearing in

NEW DELHI Delhi chief minister-elect Arvind Kejriwal and his close aide Manish Sisodia met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence on Thursday, according to agency reports. Television reports said that the prime minister

and Kejriwal shared pleasantries and had a hearty discussion on how this was a great opportunity for the Centre and state to work in unison for the progress of Delhi. After Kejriwal’s stunning victory in the Delhi assembly elections, the prime minister

congratulated him and invited him for a 'chai pe charcha'. Agency reports say that Kejriwal emphasised that he is seeking the Centre's support to run the capital and also reportedly brought up the issue of full statehood for Delhi at his meeting with PM Modi. Modi has already assured Kejriwal of the Centre’s support to the new Delhi government. Kejriwal will take the oath of office at 12 pm on Saturday. There will be no road show, reports suggested. However, Modi will be unable to attend the

swearing-in ceremony of Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal to be held at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi on February 14 owing to a prior engagement in Mumbai, reports said. Along with Kejriwal, AAP's Manish Sisodia, Satyendra Jain, Adarsh Shastri, Jitender Tomar, Kapil Mishra, Sandeep Kumar and Asim Ahmed Khan are likely to be inducted into the Delhi Cabinet. Agency reports said that AAP leaders like Somnath Bharti, Rakhi Birla, Saurabh Bhardwaj and Girish Soni might miss out on ministerial posts.

society Firoz Gulzar and secretary Salim Sandhi– their pleas were allowed. The court directed them to appear before the city crime branch on February 19. The crime branch had in January last year registered an FIR

against Setalvad and others on complaints by some former residents of the Gulbarg society and riot victims accusing them of embezzling Rs 1.51 crore collected by them in donations for turning the

housing society, ravaged during the riots, into a museum. The idea was later dropped. They moved the high court for anticipatory bail after the city sessions court rejected their plea on March 25.

After PM's snub, Govt authorities remove Modi’s idol from temple

Ahmedabad Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday he was “appalled” by news of a temple being built in his name in Gujarat, prompting authorities to replace his idol with that of Bharat Mata (Mother India). Plans to inaugurate the temple in Rajkot district’s Kotharia village were scrapped after Modi called the exercise

shocking and against India’s great traditions. "Building such temples is not what our culture teaches us. Personally, it made me very sad. Would urge those doing it not to do it. If you have time and resources, please devote the same towards fulfilling our dream of a Clean India," the PM tweeted. Rajkot district collector Manish Chandra

Hindu Mahasabha moots new way of observing Valentine's Day

Lucknow Saffron outfit Hindu Mahasabha has planned to oppose "western ways" of displaying affection on Valentine's Day this Saturday by floating its own traditional equivalent to celebrate the festival of love in the form of Basant Panchami. "If there is any Hindu festival which comes close to Valentine's

Day, it is Basant Panchami when new blooms add a festive hue to the atmosphere and there is a traditional way of celebrating it. "But, these celebrations are now on the wane and the youth are embracing western traditions," Hindu Mahasabha President Chandra Prakash Kaushik said.

has now ordered the removal of Modi’s idol and cancellation of the inauguration, scheduled for Sunday. The village panchayat allotted the land 10 years ago for a Bharat Mata temple but residents – and particularly BJP workers – decided to convert it into a temple for the PM after Modi assumed power last year. “We felt sad we hurt Modi’s feelings. He is no less than God for us,” said Ramesh Undhad, who was behind building the temple with public donations of around Rs 4.5 lakh, with the idol alone costing R1.6 lakh. The episode also found resonance in Uttar Pradesh, where state minister Azam Khan demanded a temple for Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav. “If Modi can have a temple, so can Mulayam,” he said. India has had a tradition of shrines for politicians, with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and AIADMK founder MG Ramachandran being a few of the leaders who have temples in their name.

Is Valentine's Day a taboo in India?

Freer from the constraints of rural feudalism, there has been a breakdown of traditional mores and societal structures. The cities are witnessing greater female mobility, a freer media which is broadcasting more sexual imagery in films and TV adverts, a decline of arranged marriages, and a rise in premarital sex. In this new India, Valentine’s Day is big business and worth over Rs. 15,000,000,000 (£158,000,000). However, India is still a socially conservative society, where people are uneasy about public displays of affection, and where a kiss can land you in jail. You can be arrested for ‘obscenity’ under the Penal Code 294 (a), with a maximum sentence of three months. In September 2008, a married couple were arrested for doing just that, only for the Delhi High Court to throw the case out six months later. India is a country where riots started in many cities and effigies were burned, after Richard Gere planted kisses on Shilpa Shetty at an Aids awareness rally in Delhi in 2007. Maharashtra’s state government ordered universities to bar students from celebrating Valentine’s Day. In 2015, the Hindu Mahasabha has taken on the mantle of moral guardian and promised to forcefully marry those celebrating Valentine’s Day as a punishment. If the couple are Hindu, they will be promptly married in an Arya Samaj wedding. However, if the couple are inter-faith, they will be reconverted back into the Hindu fold through the ‘Shuddhikaran’ (purification) ritual. Hindu Mahasabha National President, Chandra Prakash Kaushik, said: “We are not against love, but if a couple is in love then they must get married. We will also inform their parents.” And that is not all. In addition, Mr Kaushik said that there are eight social media teams monitoring the internet for Valentine’s messages. He said: “Anyone found displaying love on Facebook, Twitter, or WhatsApp will be caught hold of.” Rather than being intimidated, most have found it hilarious. The following tweet is a typical example of how the Hindu Mahasabha has been mocked on social media: In the past, one novel way in which Indian youth have combated moral policing was to engage in a masskissing campaign. Starting in Kerala, the Kiss of Love protest movement swept across India, in the final months of 2014. The kissing fest criss-crossed the country, to Mumbai, Hyderabad, Delhi, and Kolkata, and its facebook group received well over 120,000 likes. Kiss of Love Protest IndiaRahul Pasupalan, co-creator of the Kiss of Love movement’s facebook page said: “We wanted to show how humans express their love. A kiss is a short and sweet expression.” A photo of Mr Pasupalan kissing his wife in the back of police van after having been detained, went viral on social media. Delhi-based Kiss of Love organiser, Pankhuri Zaheer, 26, said: “It’s not just about kissing. It’s about inter-caste marriages, inter-religious marriages, live-in relationships.” Many of those against Valentine’s Day might feel threatened by the changing role of women in society. Sameera Khan, a writer and commentator on gender in India said: “It’s when women want to access public space for pleasure, to wander around, sit on a park bench and read, or hang out with a boyfriend, or as we say, to loiter, that is when Indian society is not okay with it.”

Newcomer Akshara scores as a Balki heroine after seasoned heroines Tabu and Vidya Balan

Akshara Haasan is the first star-kid to have made her debut in 2015. Of course, when a film is titled Shamitabh, it is but natural that Amitabh Bachchan would be leading from the front and Dhanush won't be much behind. In that case, one may well have wondered if Akshara would get a fair deal after all. However, the pretty young woman has managed to surprise one and all with a confident act in this Gauri

Shinde, Abhishek Bachchan and Sunil Lulla production. Also, after seasoned actresses like Tabu (Cheeni Kum) and Vidya Balan (Paa), Balki has managed to extract a notable performance from a newcomer as well. You must be happy with the way your performance has been appreciated. After all, all eyes were on you to see how you perform on screen, especially since it is your

debut film? What was right in front of me was my work. All that mattered was how I created my own ground as an actor. To begin with, I had to be disciplined. Then to make an impact as an actor, I had to be honest. That's what helped me immensely. And then of course the guidance that came from Balki in helping me become that character was immense. Did you always want to start your

Varun Dhawan's Badlapur gets PG 15 rating in UK

After choosing A certificate from the Indian censor board for his upcoming film Badlapur, director Sriram Raghavan has opted for PG 15 rating in UK for the revenge drama. According

to a report by Mumbai Mirror, the makers wanted the film to release with PG12 in UK, but for PG12 they had to edit some scenes, hence they opted for for a PG15 rating instead without

any cuts. The same adult version which is releasing in India on February 20, will also travel to UK. About 'A' certificate in India, director Sriram Raghavan had said, "I'm happier with a clean 'A' and no cuts. At least it's still the film I set out to make. Anyway, I wouldn't show it to any under-10 kid, but today's teenagers are mature enough to have enjoyed the film. I wish we had a mid-rating like PG12, but since we don't, I had no choice but to take the risk of them not seeing my film." The censor board apparently wanted the makers to tone done a love making scene between Varun Dhawan and Yaami Gautam and a passionate lip-lock scene with Huma Qureshi.

Sachin Tendulkar backs Virat Kohli to shine in the World Cup

Sachin Tendulkar on Thursday tipped India to make it to the semi-finals of the cricket World Cup which begins in Australia and New Zealand on Saturday and said that captain Mahendra Singh could play a key role in the country's fortunes in the showpiece event. "According to me, the top four teams that I would put them in the semis would be Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and India," Tendulkar, who played six World Cups, said when asked to name the four top teams. He said the whole team will have to perform if India have to defend the title they won at home in 2011 but felt that Dhoni's experience and calm

leadership would play a key role. "Yes, I think MS Dhoni is the guy because he has the experience of competing at this level for close to 10 years and he is calm and composed. You know, even on the biggest of the stages he is calm and composed and that is what you expect from a leader," Tendulkar, who won the 2011 World Cup under Dhoni, told 'Headlines Today'. "A leader should not panic, a quality which he has, and you know it's equally important for a captain to be in a good form also to take his team forward, only one individual cannot make you win the trophy. You need the support of the entire team," said the 41-year-old legendary batsman.

Children mingled with cricketing greats in "backyard" matches and Maori warriors shared the stage with morris dancers as the Cricket World Cup opened on Thursday with a vibrant and quirky ceremony in Christchurch. Thousands of fans crammed leafy Hagley Park to see the launch of the first World Cup in New Zealand and Australia in 23 years, the formal part of which began with a lone bagpiper and ended with a booming fireworks display - the biggest in the city's history. The World Cup is the largest event Christchurch has hosted since an earthquake in February 2011 devastated the city's centre - only a few hundred yards

from where Thursday's festivities took place, claiming the lives of 185 people. The physical scars of that disaster still remain in the many vacant lots where buildings once stood but the people of Christchurch showed Thursday the city's spirit remains undimmed. Mayor Leanne Dalziell said Christchurch was preparing to host the 2011 Rugby World Cup when the earthquake struck, toppling hotels and wrecking venues, forcing matches to be allocated to other centers. New Zealand prime minister John Key said the earthquake robbed Christchurch of the chance of hosting the Rugby World Cup and it was "only fitting"

that it should be chosen to host the opening of the Cricket World Cup. He said the opening ceremony was a way of telling the world that Christchurch is "back in business." International Cricket Council chief executive David Richardson unveiled the Cricket World Cup trophy, saying it was a symbol of the ICC's values of excellence, integrity and inclusion. Hagley Oval, which will host Saturday's opening match between New Zealand and Sri Lanka, has hosted first class cricket matches since 1867 but was extensively redeveloped since to become the city's international cricket venue after the earthquake wrecked Lancaster Park.

Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar Wednesday revealed he was so heartbroken by India's first round exit in 2007 World Cup that he thought of retiring from cricket. India, including Tendulkar, fared miserably against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the group stage of the One-Day International (ODI) World Cup, held in the West Indies. They managed only a win in the

group stage, against minnows Bermuda, to crash out of the tournament. The "Master Blaster" faced severe criticism for scoring seven and a duck in the crucial matches against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, respectively. In an interview to Headlines Today, Tendulkar said he had come close to retiring from cricket in 2007 but was persuaded against it by his elder brother Ajit. His brother told him to

continue playing to achieve his dream of winning the World Cup in 2011 in India. “I still remember (after) 2007 (World Cup) when I came back home, I was so depressed and so upset with the way we had performed. I actually thought of retiring then. I called my brother over, Ajit, and told him that I do not want to continue," Tendulkar said. "The game has been cruel to us and I want to stop. That was when he said, ‘can you imagine in 2011 you are here at Wankhede stadium holding that beautiful trophy. That is when you should think of retiring’. That conversation really helped and it motivated me to go out and play with a purpose,” the Mumbai-born cricketer said. Four years later, India managed to beat Sri Lanka in the final in Mumbai to realise Tendulkar's dream.

Prior to World Cup 2015, ICC considering crackdown on bat size

World Cup 2015: I have learnt from MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh to play free cricket, says Suresh Raina

Being a part of the 2011 World Cup winning team, India’s middle-order batsman Suresh Raina is no stranger to the mega-event, and this time around he is looking forward to guide the younger players in the side though he still shies away from calling himself a senior. Raina said while there would hardly be any change in his role as a

player from the 2011 World Cup, he admitted there would be the responsibility of guiding the youngsters in the team. “The responsibilities are the same irrespective of the tournament and age. 2011 was different since there were a lot of seniors in the side. This World Cup I won’t call myself a senior but I do have a good

camaraderie with the younger guys in the side as compared to 2011. Then I mostly listened to things but this time I can talk to the youngsters, which is an extra responsibility. We have a good team and hopefully we will do well in the tournament,” Raina told reporters at the Open Media session in Adelaide on Saturday.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is considering a limit on bat size less than two weeks before the 2015 World Cup beginning February 14 in Australia and New Zealand. The ICC chief executive Dave Richardson feels the balance in the modern-day cricket “may have shifted a little bit too much” towards the batsman, especially in limitedovers cricket. “The balance may have shifted a little bit too much because sometimes poor shots or mis-hits are going for six,” Richardson was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. “Let us try and

rectify that. What we have done up until now is try and maximize the size of the boundary. You will see for the World Cup, most of the grounds in Australia in particular, which allow for big playing surfaces, boundary ropes will be pushed back to at least 90 yards where possible,” Richardson said. New milestones have been achieved by batsmen frequently of late, the most recent being AB de Villiers’ recording breaking hundred off 31 balls, surpassing the effort of Corey Anderson, who had reached three figures less than a year ago off 36

balls. “No one begrudges an AB de Villiers, who plays some superb shots, Brendon McCullum, Kumar Sangakkara, they are exceptionally talented and no one minds if they hit some great shots which go for six. “But where some batsmen are mishitting balls and it is just carrying over the rope and going for a six instead of being caught at the boundary, that is what some cricket people believe has become unfair. “The bats are so good these days that the sweet spot is much larger than it would have been 1015 years ago.

Aguero's brace helps Manchester City thrash Stoke 4-1 to reignite PL title charge Argentine striker Sergio Aguero fired a brace, his first goals since December, to help Manchester City get back on track for their Premier League title challenge as the defending champions thrashed Stoke City 4-1 on Wednesday. City, who had not won at the Britannia in the Premier League, took the lead through Aguero's run and finish just after the halfhour mark, but five minutes later Peter Crouch

stooped to head a deserved equaliser for Stoke. James Milner then nodded City back in front, ten minutes after half-time, before Aguero completed his brace from the penalty

spot to take Manuel Pellegrini's side to 3-1, the BBC reported. Aguero converted the penalty after David Silva had been fouled. Samir Nasri then drove in the fourth for the defending champions in the 76th minute to seal the win. It was a welcome return to winning ways for Pellegrini's men, and ensured their seven-point deficit on Premier League leaders Chelsea did not get any bigger with Jose

Mourinho's side beating Everton. Manchester City had not won in the league since New Year's Day and their run of four consecutive league games without a win prior to arriving at Stoke was their worst since November 2009. However, the visitors produced an impressive display in the second half, which would give them a much-needed confidence boost in the title race.

Pipavav says no talks to sell stake to Mahindra

Pipavav India’s Pipavav Defence & Offshore Engineering Co. Ltd on Thursday denied it was in talks to sell a stake to Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, after a media report said it was close to clinching a deal. The Economic Times, citing unnamed sources, said technology-to-automative conglomerate Mahindra

would purchase a stake in Pipavav for about Rs.3,000 crore ($481.15 million), in a phased transaction that would eventually see it own a majority share. “There are no negotiations/agreements which the company has entered into which requires disclosure under clause 36 of the listing agreement,” Pipavav said in a regulatory

statement. Earlier this month, the Economic Times reported that Indian motorcycle maker Hero Group, as well as French shipbuilder DCNS, had begun talks to buy a controlling stake in Pipavav, which operates facilities for shipbuilding, repairs and engineering. Companies are rushing to expand into India’s defence sector, which is expected to grow rapidly as the government spends billions to modernize its armed forces, in part by developing a domestic industry that replaces the need for imported equipment. Shares in Pipavav closed at Rs.67.35 on Thursday, up 5.32%. Reuters

A media report, citing unnamed sources, said Mahindra would purchase a stake in Pipavav for about Rs.3,000
