World Radio Day: Themes, SUNVILLA SAMACHAR Quotes, History, Interesting Mamata Banerjee Facing First Real Chal- Facts To Know lenge From Abhishek On Ideological Lines Editorial

Never before in Bengal’s recent history, state-wide civic elections had become politically as consequential as the present round of polls now being held. On February 12 and February27. Intriguingly, the probable outcome of these elections, a clean sweep for the rulinTrinamool Congress (TMC), could well be no more than a minor footnote in the post-pollscenario. The contours of present political alignments in Bengal are changing and the newemerging trends do not bring cheers for the TMC.No wonder there are worried faces among senior TMC leaders, even if some are alreadycrowing over their success well ahead of the expected outcome. After a decade of unchallenged TMC rule in Bengal, there are first signs that party supremoMamata Banerjee faces the danger of a split within the ranks. There are strong indicationsthat already, her wishes among her followers no longer count as her royal command anylonger. As of now, there are two broad divisions within the TMC: Originally there was -- and is -- theincumbent loyalist camp of Mamata Banerjee followers like Partha Chatterjee, Firhad Hakim,Arup Biswas, Subrata Baxi and others. But now, there are new pro-change followers of Mr Abhishek Banerjee, Diamond HarbourLok Sabha MP and General secretary of the TMC, the nephew of Ms Banerjee. Among themare Saugata Ray, Madan Mitra, Anubrata Mondal, young Debansgshu Bhattacharya andothers. However Mitra and Mondal are also known fence sitters who bend as the blowingwinds dictate. They are in effect the new challengers to the throne. In hiring the expensive poll-winningexpertise offered by psephologist/poll consultant Mr Prashant Kishor aka PK and his IPACteam for the TMC, Mr. Banerjee had played the decisive role. The move succeeded beyond expectations. The TMC using valuable IPAC inputs not onlybeat back the strong BJP challenge to its supremacy in the 2021 assembly polls, it alsodecimated the BJP state unit’s political base .It is not surprising that following the TMC’s resounding victory in the Assembly elections in2021, Mr Banerjee’s stock rose higher than ever. Naturally services of the IPAC wereretained by the TMC for the Kolkata Corporation polls and the state civic elections as well. The IPAC, as hinted by veteran TMC MP Mr. Saugata Ray, preferred to project new , bettereducated youths as party candidate for the polls for Kolkata Corporation and the remaining108 civic bodies (excluding Howrah) in the state. The reason: there would be no allegationsof corruption or criminal activities against the newcomers . The anti-incumbency factor wouldbe marginalised in the process. But this approach upset the calculations of the deep-rooted local TMC leadership andhierarchies in most places. Some of his other proposals only added to their gloom.Mr. Banerjee spoke of the need for (a) practising politicians to retire after a certain age;(b) tointroduce the one- man- in- one -post formula ; and (c)to pave the way for a new generationof younger untainted educated political activists to serve the TMC in the future. He also pressed for civic elections to be fought as normally as possible, unlike what hadhappened during the scandalous 2018 Panchayat polls. Interestingly, even hardliners like MrAnubrata Mondal and Mr. Debangshu Bhattacharya supported him. They reasoned that the TMC had won 34% of the Panchayat seats in 2018 unopposed, asits lower level leaders and supporters launched a massive terror campaign. But suchmalpractices also paved the way for the BJP’s major electoral success in Bengal during the2019 Lok Sabha polls!Sound as such proposals were, they scared the old loyalists of Mamata Banerjee. Aspolitical commentator Biswanath Chakravarty explained at a recent TV chat show, oldveterans of civic level politics felt insecure. Worse, there was a widespread practice, thanksto the notorious ’cutmoney’ (bribery) culture propagated by the TMC in Bengal where anyaspirant for a government job , for a party nomination or for the admission to a prestigiouseducational institution, simply had to pay the local TMC boss a few lakhs of rupees beforegetting the party’s support !The IPAC/Banerjee formula to present as many new faces as possible in the civic electionswas rejected by Mamata Banerjee herself prior to the Kolkata Corporation elections, whereolder incumbent people were retained as candidates. This naturally rankled with theIPAC/Banerjee team, which retaliated by putting up more promising - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara newcomers for the next round.

SPORTS - BUSINESS IPL 2022 Mega Auction: KKR buy Shreyas Iyer for whopping ₹12.25 crores; bring back Australia’s Pat Cummins Agency News: New Delhi Shreyas Iyer became the first player to break the ₹10 crore barrier in the Mega Auction ahead of the 2022 Indian Premier League. After an intense bidding war between the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Gujarat Titans, the Kolkata franchise eventually succeeded in signing the Indian middleorder batter for ₹12.25 crore. The Knight Riders also brought back Australia’s Pat Cummins to their roster, securing his services for ₹7.25 crore. KKR was Cummins’ first franchise in the IPL, as he represented the side between 2014-2015 before returning to the side in 2020 after one season with the Delhi Daredevils (2017). Cummins’ stock has

risen significantly after he was named the full-time Test captain of Australia in November 2021. He had led the Aussie side to a phenomenal 4-0 series victory in the recently-concluded Ashes. South African speedster Kagiso Rabada, meanwhile, pocketed ₹9.25 crores as Punjab Kings made their second big signing of the day after earlier securing Shikhar Dhawan for ₹8.25 crores. Rabada had earlier represented the Delhi Capitals in the tournament and formed a lethal duo with fellow Proteas bowler Anrich Nortje, who was retained by the Delhi franchise ahead of the 2022 edition. Kiwi pacer Trent Boult, who was also a part of the marquee list, was sold for ₹8 crore to the Rajasthan Royals. Mumbai Indians – Boult’s former franchise – attempted.
