Unseasonal rains lash Gujarat; crops hit Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

Unseasonal rains lashed parts of Gujarat, causing severe damage to standing crops like wheat, groundnut, cotton and onion, particularly in the Saurashtra region of the state. The Meteorological Centre in Ahmedabad said, upper-air cyclonic circulation over South Pakistan and adjoining Kutch area has caused rainfall over Gujarat. "Moderate to heavy rainfall was reported in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Kheda and Vadodara districts of central Gujarat," the official release said. Amreli, Bhavnagar, Devboomi- Dwarka, Okha, Porbandar, Rajkot, Veraval and Gir Somnath districts of the state have also witnessed moderate to heavy rainfall. There was a light rainfall in Kutch region today, it said. The Meteorological Centre has also predicted rains at isolated places in Gujarat in next three days. The sudden showers have brought the mercury levels down and the state has witnessed chilly winds. Farmers in the state have suffered huge losses due to the unseasonal downpour. "There was a ready stock of pulses, groundnut and cotton put in various marketing-yards of Saurashtra. As far as Savarkundla Marketing Yard is concerned, it bears the loss of around Rs 25 lakh," former chairman of Savarkundla Marketing yard in Amreli district Mahesh Sudada said.

"Farmers had started shifting their wheat crops in marketing yard since last two weeks, but the untimely rainfall has damaged the ready crop and cost a loss of around Rs 1.50 crore in Kodinar marketing yard," Chairman of Kodinar Marketing yard in Gir Somanath district Subhash Dodiya said. Dodiya

added that the Gujarat government and the Centre should immediately come forward to buy the crops at minimum support price (MSP). "The unseasonal rainfall is also likely to affect the mango crop in Saurashtra region," he said. A farmer from Bhavnagar district, Mangalbhai Koli, said the

untimely rains damaged the onion crops in Mahuva taluka of the district. "Around 80 bales of onions, comprising 20 kg in each bale, got drenched in the rains, which caused a loss of lakhs of rupees. In such a situation, if the government does not help us, farmers will not able to survive," he said. Photo by : Rudani Dixit

When ex-PMs brought embarrassment to Congress Congress is on sticky wickets yet again. Former Prime Minister Manmohan singh, known for his integrity and honesty helped Congress led UPA to attain power in two consecutive terms, is in the dock for his alleged role in the coal scam. On Wednesday he was summoned by Patiala House Court for offences of criminal conspiracy, breach of trust and under provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act. Meanwhile, Congress leaders are crying foul saying that Singh is being implicated despite CBI had told the court that there was no criminality involved in the allocation of Talabira Coal Blocks-II to Aditya Birla group's Hindalco in Odisha, 2005 when Singh held the portfolio of coal ministry. Showing solidarity with the leader, Congress leadership including Sonia Gandhi thronged the streets of Delhi on Thursday. Attacking the NDA government for maintaining "studied silence", party termed the episode as "outrageous". Earlier, Manmohan Singh said that he will prove his innocence in a fair trial and truth will come out soon. "This is part of life. I have always said I am open for legal scrutiny... I am sure the truth will prevail and I will get a chance to put forward my case with all the facts," agonised Singh said when prodded about the issue. But this is not the first time when the grand-old-party's Prime Minister had to go through court proceedings. This wrangling with judiciary is not new for the dynasty party. In the past, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and political guru of Manmohan Singh Narshimbha Rao had to experience the same torment. She was the first Prime Minister of India who had to face this tough moment. In 1977, Gandhi had to appear in Allahabad High Court on a petition filed by a socialist leader named Raj Narain. Narain had accused Gandhi of corrupt electoral practices in Lok Sabha election (He had contested 1977 election against Gandhi as an SSP Candidate). Court on 12 June 1975 upheld the accusations and set aside the election of Indira Gandhi. Court also disqualified her to contest Lok Sabha election for next 6 years. Though, Supreme Court stayed the order but miffed Gandhi imposed emergency in the country. Indira Gandhi is still being hated for those emergency days which are termed as 'darkest days' in Indian democracy. Rajiv Gandhi, son of Indira Gandhi, also had honest, corruption-free image till Bofors scandal cropped up in 1987. Rajiv's name emerging in the scandal resulted in a major defeat for his party in the 1989 general elections. The scandal which still haunts the party pertained to an illegal kickback paid in a US $1.3 billion deal between the Swedish arms manufacturer Bofors with the Government of India for the sale of 410 field howitzer guns, and a supply contract almost twice that amount. The CBI filed chargesheet in the case nine years after Gandhi's assassination in 1991. The investigating agency in 1997 had made Rajiv Gandhi as one of the several accused in the most notorious scandal in Indian history, though Gandhi didn't face trial as he was already dead by then.

Karan admitted, "I always feel if I were a man who would be interested, she would be the wife I wanted, or if I had a sibling, she would be the sister I never had, or if I was interested in dating women, she would probably be the woman I would want to date. considering that the duo have created box office magic almost every time they have

collaborated. And we certainly want to know what those limitations are!

Indian Open Snooker: Higgins shows his class, Advani misses the bus Agency : Mumbai Former four-time world champion and world ranked no 12, John Higgins of England showed his class with a magnificent effort of an unfinished break of 136 in the sixth frame as he overcame Jamie Burnett of Scotland 4-2 in a first round match of the 64-player main draw in the 300,000 pounds prize money 2nd Indian Open Snooker World Ranking Tournament. Meanwhile, India’s brightest hope 29year-old Pankaj Advani misses out to make the cut as he faltered at the finish going down to Scotland’s Rhys Clark 4-3 in a tense and exciting wild card qualifying round match late

on Tuesday night. The 20year-old Clark snatched the crucial deciding frame on the re-spotted black ball to complete the victory which earned him a place in the tournament proper. Burnett stayed close with his illustrious opponent and managed to pocket the next two frames, but that was as far as he got. The 39-year-old Englishman finally seemed to have found his touch and unfurled a sensational run of 136 by polishing off the balls from the table. In an interesting first round matchup between two youngsters, 23-year-old Michael White of Wales and 24-year-old Chinese Cao Yupeng were engaged in a grim duel for

supremacy before the former with calculated lastditch effort managed to pulled through at 4-3. The world 23rd ranked Welshmen produced notable breaks of 97 (2nd frame), 96(4th) and 77 (7th) to complete a 14-66, 106(97)-0, 64-35, 96(96)0, 31-71(41), 61(46)69(40), 116(77)-13) victory and a set up a second round meeting with England’s 29-yearold Mathew Selt who brushed aside 20-yearold compatriot Joel Walker 4-0.

Agency : Mumbai Defending champions Karnataka clinched their eighth Ranji Trophy title today as they thrashed their southern opponents Tamil Nadu by an innings and 217 runs on the last day of the Ranji Trophy cricket tournament final at the Wankhede stadium. The Abhinav Mukund-led side always had the upper hand in the five-day encounter after bundling out Tamil Nadu for 134 in the first innings and then amassing 762 runs courtesy a triple century by middle-order batsman Karun Nair (338). Chasing an imposing 628, Tamil Nadu were shot out for 411 in 107.5 overs in the final session of the fifth day's play. Starting the day on 113 for three, Tamil Nadu saw resilient centuries from Vijay Shankar (103) and Dinesh Karthik (120) but the writing was on the wall after their departure. Leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal (4-126) wrecked the Tamil Nadu batting order with his four scalps. Skipper R Vinay Kumar, who became the joint leading wicket taker this season, ended with two wickets, along with Sreenath Aravind. But the real hero

for Karnataka was the 23year-old Nair, who deservedly got the man-of the-match award for his maiden triple ton in firstclass cricket. The innings also saw centuries from Lokesh Rahul (188) and R Vinay Kumar (105 not out) as Karnataka did enough to bat just once. For Tamil Nadu, wicketkeeperbatsman Karthik notched up his 23rd first class century and his 112-ball knock laced with 21 fours and a six, while Shankar made a fluent 103 (164b, 18x4). Earlier, overnight batsman Baba Aparajith (68) and Vijay Shankar looked poised for a big

score, as they batted sensibly. Tamil Nadu however lost Aparajith in the 21st over of the day thanks to a brilliant catch from wicketkeeper Robin Uthappa behind the stumps to get rid off him. The 20-year old added 32 runs to his overnight score of 36 and his 227 minutes at the crease produced 11 fours. He forged a 112run stand with Vijay Shankar for the fourth wicket. His departure brought Karthik to the crease, who set an aggressive tone to the Tamil Nadu innings only witness a sorry end to a brave campaign.

We wanted to play a good game of cricket, which we did: AB de Villiers

Agency : Wellington South Africa’s 146-run victory over UAE in their final World Cup Pool B clash on Thursday was exactly what the team needed heading into the quarter-finals, captain AB de Villiers said. (Full Coverage| Points table| Fixtures) De Villiers’ side have experienced an inconsistent campaign and were still to secure qualification for the last eight before the match at Wellington Regional Stadium. South Africa had displayed their best form when twice registering scores of more than 400 runs but also appeared vulnerable in losses to India and Pakistan, raising doubts over the side’s ability to shake off their ‘World Cup

chokers’ tag“I won’t say ‘yes that win has given us the confidence to believe that we are better than ever’ but those games need to be respected and the boys rocked up with a great attitude,” said man of the match De Villiers, who scored 99 runs in a 341 for six total. “We wanted to win. We wanted to play a good game of cricket. Which we did,” he added after UAE were dismissed for 195 with Fahad Alhashmi unable to bat after injuring his leg while bowling. “It was a good performance. Those are always tricky games. I thought they bowled pretty well up front and made it difficult for us (and)… they made us work for our runs. “Everyone bowled nicely. Very happy with the fielding

display as well. Those kind of opportunities will help us going into the knockout rounds.” De Villiers said South Africa probably had some selection issues ahead of their quarterfinal, likely to be against Sri Lanka in Sydney presuming the remaining PoolAmatches go as expected. Faf du Plessis, who did not play due to a back injury should be fit in time for next Wednesday’s clash with Rilee Rossouw, who scored 43 against UAE and pulled off three spectacular catches and Farhaan Behardien (64 not out) likely to be competing for a spot. Wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock, who scored 26, still had De Villiers’ support despite a lean spell of runs, in which he has totalled just 53 in six innings.

GSFC gets Centre’s nod to raise neem-coated urea production Correspondent, Vadodara Gujarat State Fertilisers Company Limited (GSFC) has secured the approval of central government for increasing production of neem-coated urea to 100 per cent from the current 35 per cent, a top official said today. “As per the notification issued by Government of India (GOI) in 2008, a company can produce and sell neemcoated urea equivalent to the maximum of 35 per cent of its total installed capacity,” said GSFC Chairman and Managing Director Sudeep Kumar Nanda, adding that he has raised the matter with government requesting it to remove the 35 per cent cap. Nanda said the Centre’s

move to increase production of neem-coated urea will stop diversion of urea fertiliser and prevent its misuse by industrial units that need Nitrogen and Ammonia for their manufacturing requirements. “GSFC, in collaboration with agricultural universities in Gujarat, has been regularly conducting frontline demonstrations at farmers’ fields and results show that farm yields have increased depending upon

crop and location,” he said. Nanda said by increasing the utility factor of Nitrogen (through neem-coated urea), the consumption of urea can be reduced. Urea imports have increased by 13 per cent to 78.43 lakh tonnes (LT) in AprilFebruary period of 201415, while it stood at 69.27 LT in the corresponding period of 2013-14.
