EVM row: AAP claims hackathon proposal rejected in all-party meet; EC yet to confirm Agency | New Delhi

The all-party meeting convened by the Election Commission to discuss reliability of EVMs on Friday saw a debate over the definition of ‘hacking’. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has been leading the opposition charge on this issue, claimed that its proposal of holding a ‘hackathon’ has been “rejected” by the Commission. Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who is among the AAP representatives in the meeting, tweeted that the EC “refused to carry out a hackathon”. The Election Commission will only throw a challenge asking the parties to prove that machines used in the past

elections were tampered with, he claimed. However, there was no official word from the Election Commission on Sisodia’s claims so far. AAP MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj told reporters on the sidelines of the closed-door meeting that Election Commission shared nothing new so far towards alleviating the fears of the parties. The meeting saw a debate over the definition of “hacking”. ”They won’t let us access their machines and then challenge us to prove our charge of hacking. The EC is being very smart,” Bhardwaj said. Leaders of other parties like the Communist Party of India (CPI), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Rastriya Lok Dal (RLD) raised related

as well as other aspects of the electoral process like corporate funding. “The whole issue is about the ethos and integrity of the election process. Why are advanced countries in the west not using EVMs?” CPI national secretary Atul Anjan asked. RJD spokesperson Manoj Jha said by harping on the infallibility of EVMs, the Election Commission was acting as the custodian of just the “instru-

ments” and not the process as a whole. At the day-long meeting, which started with the opening remarks of Chief Election Commission Nasim Zaidi, the Commission was expected to seek views of political parties on the proposed challenge it plans to throw to hack its EVMs. All the seven national and 35 of the 48 state recognised political parties are attending the meeting.

Tejas successfully test-fires BVR missile Agency | New Delhi

Indigenous Light Combat Aircraft ‘Tejas’ on Friday demonstrated its air to air Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missile firing capability by successfully test-firing the Derby missile to destroy the target, an official statement said. The air-to-air missile was fired in the radar-guided mode in the test conducted on a Manoeuvrable Aerial Target at the Interim Test Range (ITR), Chandipur. The sensors

at ITR also tracked the target and missile. “The missile launch was performed in lock on after launch mode for a BVR target in the look down mode and the target was destroyed,” the statement said. The objective of the test was to assess the Derby integration with Tejas’ on-board systems including the avionics, fire-control radar, launchers and missile weapon delivery System and to verify its performance. A safe separation was followed by

missile guidance towards the radar-acquired target. The flawless launch was demonstrated with all onboard systems performing satisfactorily and the missile scored a direct hit on the target with complete destruction of it,

the statement said. “The test firing achieved all its planned objectives. The Derby firing is a major step towards clearing BVR capabilities on LCA aircraft for FOC (final operational clearance),” it said.

National Herald case: Congress accuses government of ‘misinformation’

Meghalaya State Commission today launched a 24X7 helpline to assist women in the domains of harassment and distress. “The helpline bearing number 181 is an attempt to provide all kinds of assistance - legal, police, medical, counseling and temporary support services - to women affected by violence,” Meghalaya State Commission for Women chairperson Theilin Phanbuh said here at its launch. It’s centre is currently situated at Ganesh Das Government Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Shillong.“The helpline is a long felt need for women in distress and its launch will be a boon in reaching out to those who need of help,”

Agency | New Delhi Agency | Washington US President Donald Trump lashed out in a series of tweets on Friday morning amid a firestorm over the abrupt firing of FBI Director James Comey, defending the shifting narrative and timeline his administration has offered for the decision. He questioned whether his administration should cancel all future press briefings and, instead, replace them with written responses to questions, “for the sake of accuracy.” The president’s advisers said this week that Trump fired Comey

on Tuesday in response to a recommendation by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. Later, however, they said that Trump had planned to fire Comey regardless. The president tweeted, “As a very active President with lots of things happening, it is not possible for my surrogates to stand at podium with perfect accuracy!” He added, “Maybe the best thing to do would be to cancel all future ‘press briefings’ and hand out written responses for the sake of accuracy???”

The Congress today accused the government of “campaign of misinformation and distortion” regarding the National Herald case, after the Delhi high court refused to grant relief to party president Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul in connection to the case. “The amount of misinformation going on with regards to Young Indian/ National Herald, makes me wonder does the Govt have anything better to do in this country than to circulate unsigned notes which are actually campaigns of misinformation and distortion,” Congress

MP A M Singhvi told mediapersons at a press conference today. Earlier in the day, it was reported that the Delhi high court declined to stay the income tax proceedings against Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald misappropriation of assets case, and asked them to approach the tax authorities. The case stems from a complaint by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, who had alleged misappropriation of funds to the tune of Rs 2000 crore in the acquisition of Associated Journal Limited (AJL).

Pakistan: Balochistan blast toll reaches 25, senate deputy chairman Haideri injured Agency | Allahabad

At least 25 people were killed and more than 30 have been injured, including deputy chairman of the senate Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, in a powerful blast on Friday in Pakistan’s south-western Balochistan province. The bombing targetted Haideri when he came out of a religious seminary after addressing a gathering in Mastung area of the province shortly after the weekly Friday prayers. The area where the explosion took place is approximately 70 kilometres from provincial capital Quetta. He said Haideri was slightly injured. “I am alive, Allah has saved my life, it was a sudden blast, broken pieces of the windscreen hit me, I am injured but safe. The driver and other people sitting next to me were badly injured,” Haideri said on private TV channel SAMAA. Citing sources, Geo TV said Haideri has been shifted to the civil hospital. Haideri later told

Dunya TV in a brief chat that he received minor injuries. Television footage showed Haideri’s vehicle was badly damaged. He was sitting in the car at the time of blast. His driver was killed in the attack. Haideri is a top official of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F), one of the country’s most powerful religious political parties. JUI-F has been targeted by the Pakistani Taliban in the past, even though the party leaders have acted as negotiators between the militants and Pakistan government in the past. So far no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. “It is not yet clear whether it was a planted bomb or a

suicide attack,” police official Safar Khan told AFP as he gave the toll. Senator Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, the deputy chairman of the upper house of parliament, told Reuters minutes after the blast that he believed he was the target and he had sustained minor injuries. “My convoy was going to Mastung and there was an explosion. There are many casualties as there were many people in the convoy,” he said by telephone. Mastung police official Ghazanfar Ali Shah said the convoy appeared to have been hit by a suicide bomber and at least 17 people were killed, including Haideri’s driver.

How China Reacted To Sri Lanka Blocking Its Submarine With Eye On India Agency | New Delhi

China defended its military relationship with Sri Lanka as good for regional peace and stability after Sri Lanka rejected a request from China to dock one of its submarines in Colombo this month. Sri Lanka’s decision was announced as Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived on the island nation for an overnight trip. Sri Lanka last allowed a Chinese submarine to dock in the capital of Colombo in October 2014, a move that triggered fierce opposition from India, which worries about growing Chinese

activity in a country it has long viewed as part of its area of influence. The timing of the incident is awkward as Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is expected in Beijing this weekend to attend a summit on China’s new

Silk Road plan. China’s Defence Ministry, in a statement sent to Reuters, did not directly mention the rejected request for the submarine visit, but said its submarines needed a place to resupply on their way to anti-piracy missions.

Blue House said in a statement. “We hope for Russia to play a constructive role in order for North Korea to stop with its nuclear provocations and go the way of denuclearisation,” Moon was citing as saying to Putin in the 20-minute conversation.

Industry consultation in engineering colleges: Useless idea from AICTE The employability of engineering graduates in India has been a matter of concern for the last several decades. Many reports have stated that only 20-25% of the graduates are employable in industry. A recent report has mentioned that only 5% of computer science and information technology graduates (a majority of our engineers are in these disciplines) have any reasonable programming skills, which is the most basic skill for such a graduate. Another 15% can still be trained to perform tasks in IT industry. Whenever a new report comes out, there are immediate calls for greater interaction between industry and academia and to have more industry-focussed curricula in colleges. And seeing that such calls have not had any impact on the ground level, AICTE has announced that such interaction will now be mandatory. Each college must have an industry consultation committee to rework the curriculum of each course taught there every year. AICTE appears to have forgotten that it regulates only affiliated colleges, and it has very little regulatory control over universities. Affiliated colleges have no control over their curriculum. They teach the curriculum that the affiliating university decides. These universities are expected to have a Board of Studies for each program, and that board invariably has members from industry as well. So there is already an industry input to the curriculum design. Now, if a college creates such a committee and the industry person advises even small modifications to the courses, can the college implement these modifications? The answer, unfortunately, is in the negative for all colleges, barring a few “autonomous” ones. More fundamentally, do we even know whether unemployability is because of an outdated syllabus, or is it due to poor quality education? How many of our graduates know what they have learnt in existing courses? GATE (graduate aptitude test in engineering) results show that almost half the graduates get a zero in the exam. How are they getting a degree at all? I have been involved with drafting of computer science syllabi in several universities and even AICTE model syllabus. I can confidently say that even if the syllabus is not changed for 10 years, there will be no impact on employability. AICTE should focus on finding out why someone who has never written even a single line of code is not just passing a course on programming, but passing it with distinction. A majority of our engineering graduates do not deserve their degrees. For computer science, that number could be as high as 95%. Talking about industry, how many people in the industry are capable of understanding the impact of various curricular and pedagogical interventions on learning? How many of these people will be able to understand the interplay of various courses, recognise the gaps, and then suggests revisions to plug those gaps?

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“After having a daughter, I started respecting and valuing women more. I lost my mother when I was really young. To see what my wife does for our child, makes me fall in love with her all over again.”

Sarkar 3 movie review: Sanjay Dutt’s topic has become Beneath power lies nothing redundant, says Madhuri Dixit Agency | Mumbai

Agency | Mumbai Why director Ram Gopal Varma would make the third instalment in the Sarkar franchise after nine long years, is beyond one’s comprehension. Tight close ups, ear-piercing background score, over the top treatment and typical low angle shotsSarkar 3 has every imaginable Ram Gopal Varma trope. Subhash Nagre aka Sarkar (Amitabh Bachchan) is living a peaceful life with ailing wife Pushpa (Supriya Pathak) after his two sons dies. Gokul (Ronit Roy) and Raman (Parag Tyagi) are earnest disciples of Sarkar. Their lives change upside down when Sarkar’s grandson Shivaji Nagre aka Cheeku (Amit Sadh) comes to stay with them. He is a hot blooded man with strict principles and is in love with Annu (Yami Gautam). Deshpande (Manoj Bajpayee) and Michael (Jackie Shroff) plan to bribe Cheeku to kill his own grandfather (Sarkar). What happens next forms the rest of Sarkar 3. Sarkar which released in 2005

was quite a brave attempt from the director but as the time passed by, the director lost the hold on the thrill of it. Back then, the film was compared with Godfather but the franchise fails to impress later. Sarkar 3 is the weakest of all three films so far. The plot of the film is sloppy and dysfunctional. The tagline says angrier than ever but the film is nothing but a yawn fest.RGV has a certain style of shooting a film but it is annoying to see how he captures objects better than the characters in the frame. The faux scary dog on the dusty furniture, the laughing Buddha and Abhishek Bachchan’s framed photo are the most entertaining parts of the film. The dim lit rooms are familiar thanks to the previous two

films and tight close ups of Amitabh slurping tea from the saucer are funny to the core. The most hilarious part is that Sarkar 3 has nothing to do with the continuity of the last one. Amitabh Bachchan shot Sarkar Raaj in 2008 so naturally he has aged in the third film. He surely leads this not so thrilling film with his captivating performance but he is losing his impeccable script sense. Rohini Hattangadi and Supriya Pathak are passable in their cameos. Manoj Bajpayee is completely wasted in this political mishap of a film. Ronit Roy and Amit Sadh are good in their intense roles but Yami Gautam looks stoned throughout. She is just a pretty prop who is heart-stricken by her father’s death.

Mohit Suri: My real self bleeds into my films, and I find closure after that Agency | Mumbai

Mohit Suri is all geared up for the release of his forthcoming directorial ‘Half Girlfriend’ starring Arjun Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor. He recently sat for an interview with Bombay Times and talked about films, family and more. While speaking about his family, Mohit said, “After having a daughter, I started respecting and valuing women more. I lost my mother when I was really young. To see what Udita (his wife) does for our child, makes me fall in love with her all over

The shoot for Sanjay Dutt’s biopic is on in full swing and has become one of the highly anticipated films, all thanks to a series of pictures of leading man Ranbir Kapoor sharing an uncanny resemblance with the senior actor. The biopic will reportedly not only touch upon the actor’s professional life, his trials, tribulations, but will also give fans a peek into his lovelife. While actresses like Sonam Kapoor and Dia Mirza have been roped in to play his love interests, reports state that Madhuri Dixit had approached director Rajkumar Hirani to remove any reference

to her alleged link-up with the actor. If the reports are to be believed then, actress Karishma Tanna was supposed to play the dancing diva on-screen, but director Hirani decided to adhere to Madhuri’s request. According to latest reports, the ‘Dhak dhak’ girl was approached to share her thoughts on the same. She brushed these reports off saying, that her life has come a long way since then and that the topic was now “redundant”. She also admitted that she wasn’t aware where these reports were springing up from but insisted

that it didn’t make any difference to her. The Dutt biopic will reportedly see Dia Mirza playing’s Sanjay’s wife Maanayata Dutt while Sonam Kapoor is believed to be an of a m a l - gamation the actor’s former girlfriends in the early 90’s.

Deepika Padukone, Parineeti Chopra, Malaika Arora Khan show us how to ace cool summer travel style

Agency | New Delhi Fashionistas are always looking out for ideas for cool summer travel style and what’s better than airport celebrity spotting for some inspiration, right? Over the years, Bollywood divas have given us ample opportunities to get inspired and redo our wardrobes. The summer of 2017 is no different. Spotted looking elegant and in tune with trends was Deepika Padukone. The Padmavati actress was snapped at the Mumbai airport in a soft pink dress from her own collection ‘All About You’.

We think the layered top midi outfit is perfect for summers as you can wear it as it is or if you are up for it, can accessorise it with a tan belt and sandals just like her. We really like this look and those animal-printed sunnies and Hérmés bag is the perfect add-on. Care to follow her lead? Meanwhile, Parineeti Chopra was seen at the airport in an amazing pair of white sneakers with tassel details on it. We love how this lady has been experimenting on the fashion front with the promotion of her upcoming film Meri Pyaari Bindu going on in

full swing. From the numerous appearances, it’s clear that she has taken a liking for boho chic inspired looks and this dark blue dress with white embroidery and tassels on it is no exception. We think she wore it well. Last but not the least, Malaika Arora Khan gave out really cool vibes in a deconstructed shirt dress with blue details on the hem of the sleeves. We love how she paired it with plain white sneakers, oversized sunnies and a bright lip shade. Refreshing to the eyes in the summer heat – simple yet effective.

international media will be invited to the launch, which Zhu Zhu and Matin Rey Tangu will also be

attending. We even hear that the superstar’s sister Alvira will be flying in for the launch too,” a source was quoted in the report. The film is being shot in Dubai and Katrina also shared her own behind-the-scenes moment. Katrina can be seen sitting with Salman and she wrote, “Abu Dhabi . #TigerZindaHai . Aliiiiiiii.” The only Tiger Zinda Hai team member who has not posted a pic yet is Salman

Khan and we can blame it on Tubelight. Salman’s film Tubelight is releasing on Eid and the actor is busy with its promotions. The film’s first song ‘The Radio Song’ will be out on May 16. While there is still some time for the song to come out, Salman teased his fans by sharing the poster of this song. The actor shared the first glimpse of the song on his Twitter account and captioned it,.

Anil Kumar brought the Indian camp some cheer with the 85kg bronze on the second day of the Asian Wrestling Championship at the K.D. Jadhav arena of the Indira Gandhi Stadium Complex here on Thursday. The 29-year-old Air Force grappler eluded Uzbek Muhammadali Shamsiddinov’s grasp twice from close to getting pinned, and turned around a 1-6 deficit to win 7-6. Deftly parrying his opponent’s attempts to bring him down, Anil notched up points swiftly in the last two minutes to turn the tide, buoyed by the vociferous cheering from the sparse crowd. After going down 7-0 to eventual silver medallist Atsushi Matsumoto of Japan in the quarterfinals, this was a fine recovery indeed from Anil. In an intense battle where both showed strong defence, Ritu led 4-1 at one stage but had two points revoked at the Korean’s protest. Ritu had beaten Min-Wen Hou of Chinese Taipei 5-4 in the quarterfinals before losing 12-2 to Battsetseng Soronzonbold of Mon-

Unconcerned by the indifferent form exhibited recently by India captain Virat Kohli, former swashbuckling batsman Virender Sehwag said on Friday that a player of his calibre knew how to get out of the rut. “It (bad patch) happens with every player. Even if you look at the great Sachin Tendulkar, he hasn’t played the same (way) every year. Even your (media) questions keep changing time to time. When time changes, form also changes. The hallmark of a good player is who can come out of bad form and Virat knows very well how to get back into good form,” said Sehwag on Friday. Spanish footballer Gerard Pique’s idea of a weeklong men’s tennis world tournament rivalling the Davis Cup has received support from leading players Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Pique was at the Madrid Open earlier this week, reportedly to discuss a 16team knockout tournament with ATP Tour chief Chris Kermode. It would potentially replace the former World Team Cup event on the ATP calendar that was played from 1975 to 2012 ahead of Roland Garros. The current Davis Cup format, featuring three-day matches spread over weekends in February, April, September and November, has led to withdrawals from the sport’s

biggest names in order to focus on grand slam preparations. “I think that it’s a really exciting idea. If it comes off, I think it would be a very, very good thing for tennis,” Murray, a 2015 Davis Cup winner with Great Britain, told reporters. “I think there’s still a lot of things that need to be worked out before it potentially happens, but I think it would be a very good thing.” Nadal also came out in support of his compatriot’s initiative. “I know

from a long time there was a group (with Pique) that wants to create a World Cup that would be a great and very interesting tournament to compete in,” the 14-time grand slam champion said. Despite several absentees, the International Tennis Federation has been reluctant on changing the format of the Davis Cup, with players also having to make themselves available for at least four matches in a four-year cycle to qualify for the Olympics.

Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting has picked Indian stalwart Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the captain of his all-time IPL XI, which comprises seven Indians and four foreigners. The other Indians in the Australian’s team are Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Ashish Nehra and Amit Mishra. The foreigners are destructive openers Chris Gayle and David Warner besides all-rounder Dwayne Bravo and pacer Lasith Malinga. Ponting, who has played in the IPL and was coach of the Mumbai Indians, sprang a surprise by including leggie Mishra in the elite eleven. “I have gone for a bit of a shock here and have put Amit Mishra in

the side,” Ponting was quoted as saying cricket. com.au. “He has got an outstanding IPL record, he has got great variations and he is a wicket-taker because he is not scared to throw the ball up. He turns the ball enough both ways and he has been a great performer for a long, long time.” The notable omissions from the side

are AB de Villiers, Sunil Narine and Brendon McCullum. On not including de Villiers, Ponting said: “AB de Villiers is another one who would walk into most IPL teams through the history of the game. “But with the record that my openers, Gayle and Warner, have it was a bit hard to fit AB de Villiers in the middle order.

of the two players. Shah and Vikas were arrested from a room on the 17th floor of the city’s only five-star hotel. The third accused, Ramesh, was arrested from the Green Park stadium, the SSP said. It has been learnt from BCCI sources that Ramesh, who was a part of the logistics team, had “promised” the bookie

Shah that he had contacts among groundsmen, who can pour more water on the 22-yard surface to tinker with the playing conditions. ”Although Ramesh had nothing to do with pitch preparation activity, he had bragged to the bookie that his access to Green Park groundsmen will help him tamper with the pitch. Additional water would make the pitch damp and it would be a low-scoring affair,” a BCCI source said. However, in the match, Gujarat Lions scored 196

and Daredevils chased the target off the last delivery in a high-scoring affair. After it turned out to be a high-scoring match, Ramesh told Shah that despite his arrangements, the scoring pattern wasn’t affected. “The Anti-Corruption Unit of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been tracking activities of certain individuals, as a result of which, three suspects were arrested in Kanpur, on Thursday,” read the official statement from the BCCI.

Kohli, who has notched up 250 runs from nine games in the IPL this season at a modest average of 27-plus with 64 being his highest score, will lead India in the Champions Trophy tournament which is scheduled to start in England on June 1. Sehwag did not agree with the view that the Indian players could be a bit jaded going into the 50-over Champions Trophy after taking part in the T20 League. Sehwag, who is the mentor of Kings XI Punjab, felt that since his

side’s play-off chances in the IPL depended on other teams, it was crucial for Kings XI to maintain a good run-rate. ”Our qualification depends on other teams. Gujarat after Modi: Gender is the buzzword but true emancipation distant for women Agency | Ahmedabad

For three-time councillor Bhartiben Rana, 50, her present term is the most satisfactory and rewarding one. This is not because she was elected president of Dholka Nagarpalika in December 2015. But for the first time, with an equal representation of male and female members in the local body, she feels a sense of empowerment. With an amendment to the Gujarat Local Authorities Laws Act, 2009, the Anandiben Patel government — the first to be headed by a woman in the state — increased women’s representation in local bodies from 33% to 50%. The state also increased women’s quota in all government departments, including police, from 27% to 33%. This is probably the biggest social change that Gujarat has seen after Narendra Modi moved to Delhi on becoming the Prime Minister in 2014. In fact, women’s representation in the state today is the highest ever, be it in administration or in politics. Yet, on a

A tour operator from Navrangpura has been arrested for duping 250 Amdavadis by luring them with offers of cheap tours to Goa. The operator booked a trip to Goa and cancelled it on the day that everyone was supposed to leave for the land of sun, sand and beaches. Navrangpura police has registered a complaint of fraud against Parth Shah, who runs Destiny Tavels at Anshan Complex.Paldi resident Rakesh Shah and his friends booked a Goa tour for Rs 7,777 per person about a month ago. The package included a three-day, four- night package at five-star hotels and flight charges. Rakesh

was to leave for Goa at 11 am on Thursday. When he did not receive the flight tickets even by morning, he went to the office and found 75 others in the same situation. When Parth told them that the tour had been cancelled, enraged Amdavadis started pelting stones at the office. Parth called the cops for help. However, when police heard the entire tale, they hauled Parth to the police station for duping his clients. Soon, more of his victims arrived at the station and demanded that he return their money. Satyendra Shah,

a resident of Naranpura, said, “My daughter and 15 others went on a trip to Goa through the travel firm. However, when the group reached there, they realised that Parth had not booked them into the hotel that was promised. It was some cheap place that did not cost as much. Also, Parth did not send them tickets to fly back from Goa. They were forced to shell out money again to book tickets to Ahmedabad.” Meanwhile, Parth Shah defended himself, claiming he had to cancel tours as rates of air tickets and hotels rose significantly. Navrangpura Inspector R V Desai said, “We have started an investigation into the fraud complaint registered against Parth.

Congress’ alliance idea faces first test in Gujarat

cerns about Gujarat figured informally in recent talks on the presidential poll that Gandhi held with some Opposition leaders but the NCP-JDU camp has put the onus on the Congress leadership to take the initiative to prevent the division of anti-BJP votes in Gujarat. While Congress leaders privately lament about the NCP-JDU-Patel front, the latter has portrayed the Congress unit of Gujarat that has failed to defeat BJP in the state for nearly quarter of a century as a ‘monumental example of a toothless tiger’. “Gujarat Congress has not

only miserably failed to defeat BJP for almost 25 years, but is also facing a huge leadership crisis. We are entering the turf to ensure that the remaining Opposition space is not ceded to BJP,” said one of the leaders of the parallel front. If the Congress is serious about fighting BJP in Gujarat, it should reach out not only to NCP-JDU but also to outfits led by Hardik Patel, Dalit leader Jignesh and leader of extreme Backward communities Kalpesh Thakur,” said a leader of the parallel front. The JDUNCP camp also pointed out how the BJP, despite being in a politically commanding position, struck strategic alliances with smaller parties in Uttar Pradesh to maximise electoral and social reach, in the last Lok Sabha and assembly polls.

bhai Sapariya confirmed to BusinessLine that Adani Power and Tata Power had discontinued 1250 MW and about 500 MW supply, respectively. The Ruiasled Essar Power Gujarat Ltd (EPGL), too, has suspended supply owing to higher international coal prices following changes in Indonesian regulations. However, Sapariya ruled out any power shortage in the State as a consequence. “We have sufficient capacities to generate power and alternative sources to pro-

cure power from the open market, which is cheaper. The discontinuation will not affect power supply,” he said. Sources said Essar Power, too, has filed a tariff review petition with GUVNL. If an order similar to the Supreme Court ruling on Tata Power and Adani Power is passed on the EPGL petition, the company may face cashflow issues, which will impair its ability to service its loans. Gujarat energy department sources revealed that the Gautam Adani-led power arm had written to the State government citing financial unviability given the higher cost of imported coal.

range of indicators, the gender balance in Gujarat remains skewed — and this remains among the most serious social issues in the state. The pecking order of administration remains bottom heavy vis-a-vis women’s representation — highest at the base and lowest at the top. Besides, husbands or brothers, in some cases, continue to call the shots behind the curtain as women end up as merely a face. Picture this: Of the total 159 municipalities, 84 have women presidents, 129 taluka panchayats out of 247 are headed by women and 13 district panchayats of the total 33 have women on top. But when it comes to the state government, there is just one woman min-

ister, that too of junior rank, in the 25-strong jumbo council of ministers. This means the number of women representatives shrinks as one moves up the power hierarchy. Against 53% representation at the municipality level, it comes down to 52% at the taluka panchayat level. It further declines to 39% at the district panchayat level and a mere 4% at the state level. In the BJP state unit, their representation today is limited to 22%. In 1987, when RSS pracharak Modi was appointed BJP’s organisational secretary, Anandiben was made head of the party’s women’s wing with responsibility of bringing women workers and voters to the party fold.

Even as Congress president Sonia Gandhi tries to anchor an anti-BJP alliance for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, her party faces a practical test in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state, Gujarat, where assembly elections are scheduled for December. The NCP, JDU and Hardik Patel’s outfit, which have floated a parallel front, have challenged the Congress leadership’s ability to negotiate with parties to reach an agreement for a broader front against the NDA. Many in the non-BJP camp feel that if parties engaged in efforts to unite parties against the BJP for the presidential poll — Congress, NCP and JDU — contest against each other in Gujarat, it would raise questions on the credibility of the unity exercise. Adani, Tata Power trim supplies to Gujarat as tariff ruling skews cost

Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

The Supreme Court ruling setting aside a decision of the Central Appellate Tribunal for Electricity, effectively denying ‘compensatory tariff’ to Tata Power and Adani Power, has driven the producers to cut back power supply to Gujarat, citing financial unviability. The two companies have suspended electricity supplies to Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL), the parent of discoms in Gujarat, saying higher imported fuel costs had skewed their financial viability. The companies have begun the phased lowering of supply at the peak of summer. Gujarat Energy Minister Chiman-

Ahmedabad’s pollution app goes live today Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

Even as the city gets its first real-time Air Quality Monitoring System on Friday, it will be deprived of a comprehensive plan for controlling air pollution in the city. For more than four months, now the Air Action Plan (AAP) for Ahmedabad city has been gathering dust with officials of the district administration, municipal corporation, Gujarat Pollution Control Board and other allied departments which are reluctant to launch the plan for the city. While the AQMS installed by Indian Institute for Tropical Meteorology (IITM) “Safar-Air” will be operational, providing real-time pollution updates and forecasting through mobile apps, there will

be no concrete action on ground. The major aim of the Ahmedabad AAP plan is to curtail emission of pollutants from activities like transport, construction, open burning of waste and from industries surrounding the city. Measures like a ban on open burning of waste, capping of the Pirana dump and putting out the ever-smouldering fire, helping replace all municipal diesel buses with CNG buses and increasing the frequency of buses, replacing diesel commercial three wheelers with CNG ones, proper auditing of PUC centres.

Shopping complex in station area razed Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) on Thursday night razed the New Belbaug Shopping Centre opposite the railway station. The VMC had issued a notice to the shops there stating that they were dilapidated. Removing the shopping centre was needed for the station area redevelopment project of the civic body. The project requires that several existing structures in the area are taken care of. A transport hub as well as a sprawling city square will come up in the area. Earlier, the civic body had razed its own Pravasi Gruh, Belbaug Shopping Centre, Station Shopping Centre and other structures in the area. The VMC had also started razing the Pathik Bhavan owned by the district panchayat as it was in a bad condition, but had to stop the work as the Gujarat high court

ordered a status quo. A little ahead on the Sayajigunj main road, the civic body has razed a petrol pump and a tyre repair shop even as the space used by the traffic police to park vehicles will be vacated soon. The shopkeepers at New Belbaug Shopping Centre were asked to vacate the shops in the evening. They have been assured that they would be given alternative spaces in the future. The shops were vacated by late in the evening following which the razing drive began. VMC commissioner Dr Vinod Rao said that there were around 56 shops in the complex. “The bad condition of the shops is evident from the fact that we could raze them only in around 30 minutes. In the future, the road will now shift towards the compound wall of the university giving space to the transport hub,” said Rao.
