‘Health minister didn’t suggest’: Centre on Maharashtra’s plan to halt vaccination for 18-44 age group sites in 17 schools due to no supply,” the minister said, adding that exporting 6.6 crore doses was the “biggest mistake”. Till March, India had supplied more than 6.6 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines, mostly Covishield, to 76 countries. Bharat Biotech’s letter said the unprecedented demand for Covaxin was difficult to meet even as the firm had increased production. “...in spite of increasing production every month, we are unable to keep up with the demand. Further, we are making dispatches as per the directions of the government officials concerned. We therefore sincerely regret that we cannot make any additional supplies as required by you.

As Maharashtra health minister Rajesh Tope said he talked to Union health minister Dr Harsh Vardhan on diverting vaccines meant for 18+ population for the usage of 45+ population, the Centre clarified that Dr Vardhan did not suggest anything like that. Agency News: New Delhi As Maharashtra plans to halt the vaccination of people between the age group of 18 and 44 years to give priority to those above the age of 45 years, the Centre has clarified that the suggestion did not comes from Union health minister Dr Harsh Vardhan, unlike what state health minister Rajesh Tope claimed during a press meet on Tuesday. ”I have personally talked to Dr harsh Vardhan.

The Centre actually does not have vaccines, he told me. So, he also thinks that there is no other way. We have to divert the doses meant for 18+ people to those 45+. For the 18-44 age group vaccination, we have to go slow because vaccines are not available. We want to purchase vaccines from abroad also, but vaccines are not there,” Rajesh Tope said. The minister said the government will be diverting three lakh vials of Covaxin, originally meant for the 18+

population to 45+ people. According to data, more than five lakh 45+ in Maharashtra are awaiting their second dose of vaccine. The Centre on Tuesday asked states to prioritise the administration of the second dose of the

vaccine, but the Centre clarified it didn’t suggest the Maharashtra government repurpose vaccines allotted for citizens aged between 18 to 44 years in the state for those aged 45 and above.Though the number of fresh cases in

Maharashtra is coming down amid the strict restrictions imposed in the city, the state continues to report the highest number of daily cases. As the state is also reporting the highest number of people receiving vaccination per day, its vaccine stock is getting over soon. In the third phase of vaccination, which began from May 1, the Centre allowed states to also procure vaccines directly from the vaccine makers. The health minister said Maharashtra needs two crore vaccine doses every month to inoculate the entire population of the state in the next six months, but no supplier can make so many vials. The government has not yet received any response from Russian Direct Investment Authority on Sputnik V.

SUNVILLA SAMACHAR Editorial

SUNVILLA SAMACHAR Mamata Must Mobilise Her Theoretical And Political Idealism While home minister Amit Shah befittingly supported by his buddy, governor Jagdeep Dhankar, has been busy preparing the blue print for dismissing the Mamata government on the plea of its failure to control the election violence and placing the state under President’srule, the five member bench of Calcutta High Court on Monday in a severe jolt to his dreamdesign expressed satisfaction over the action taken by Mamata Banerjee to restore normality after post-results violence in pockets of the state. From May 2, the day results for the assembly elections were announced and the BJP met with its waterloo, the fidgety Shah has been working on the plan not to allow Mamata to form the government and to take control of the state administration. But he could not succeed. After this first failure, he sent the team of the central officials to go around the state andprepare a report recommending imposition of President’s rule. Senior RSS leaders were alsoinvolved in preparing the blue print. It was part of their design that two BJP leaders, one a common worker and second, advocate Priyanka Tibrewal, the BJP candidate for the Entally Assembly, were asked tomove a PIL before the High Court. Usually a five member bench is not constituted to hearthis nature of case, but the petitioners succeeded in convincing the court. Unfortunately for them the verdict of the bench has shattered their dream project. The acting Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal during the hearing said; “The steps taken by the state in bringing the situation to normalcy are appreciable. However, the central government has similar responsibility to maintain the law-and-order situation of the state after the poll results”. This order smashed the design of Amit Shah. The High Court was not only satisfied with state's handling of post-poll violence, it alsorejected additional solicitor-general's (representing the Modi government) prayer to set up aspecial investigation team to probe the same. The other four judges on the special benchwere Justices I.P. Mukerji, Harish Tandon, Soumen Sen and Subrata Talukdar. The problem of Shah and his mentor Narendra Modi is that the two treat themselves as toobig. They think there is none in India who is above them. Modi in public does not like China, but in practice he is too willing to run through his mechanism of having one party. Not toolong, just after coming to power in 2014, he said that he intends to create Congress MuktBharat. Since Modi-Shah combine had fought the Bengal election to finish TMC andMamata, it is easy to understand that they could tolerate their existence. With the Mamata thwarting their design, the chances have brightened that the BJP may losethe elections to Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh,Gujarat where assembly elections would be held in 2022 and also in Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan, Telangana where elections are due in 2023. The election to the Lok Sabha will be in 2024. Though Modi has been projected as the villain by the global media for his failure to tackle thechallenges of corona, one thing is certain that in future too he would focus more on theelections than accepting the challenges of economic slowdown and salvaging the countryfrom the onslaught of corona. The economy has been hit by two waves of the pandemic andthe third is already lurking. The government has lost control over both the pandemic and theeconomy. Both lives and livelihoods deserve to be saved.Even after the High Court has appreciated the efforts of Mamata in controlling violence,Dhankar is busy giving shape to his plan. On Sunday he sanctioned the CBI request toprosecute TMC MLAs Subrata Mukherjee, Firhad Hakim and Madan Mitra, and former BJPleader Sovan Chatterjee in the Narada sting case. In all fairness he could have discussedthis with the chief minister. The action by central agencies is seen more as an act ofvendetta by Delhi. Incidentally on the same day Mamata named Mukherjee and Hakimcabinet ministers. The CBI claims that all four were caught accepting bribes on camera. Thesting operation tapes were released ahead of the 2016 Assembly polls. They were allegedlyfilmed in 2014, when all four were ministers. The Calcutta HC has also ordered a CBI probein the case in March 2017.Interestingly the IT cell of BJP is still carrying out vilification campaign against Mamata andher government. Numerous fact-checking exercises by AltNews and others have revealedthat many videos and pictures have been circulated by the saffron camp and its followers onsocial media.
