On Wednesday, during the scheduled hearing of the case, the High Court directed Irfan to produce the woman before it, following which, Damini appeared today before the High Court and reiterated that she wanted to go with Irfan, which was allowed today. Damini had in February pleaded before

the court to allow her to stay with Irfan but it was refused, after which she had tried to commit suicide by strangulating herself with ‘dupatta’ inside the court room, said the High Court order. Damini, who fell in love with Irfan one year back, had tied the knot with him in December last year. However, as her family did not ac-

But during the trial, she had appeared before the division bench headed by justice Ravi Tripathi and requested him to allow her to stay with her husband as they had signed a marriage agreement under Special Marriage Act. However, the High

Rotten eggs, ink thrown at AAP’s Tomar as he leaves Bihar university after fake degree probe Delhi law minister Jitender Singh Tomar, who is the Tri Nagar MLA, in a police car on his way from AIIMS to the Saket court that ordered him in police custody for four days on Tuesday.

An IIT Kharagpur B Tech student who topped across all departments in the institute, has rejected a lucrative job offer from an MNC to remain in academics. Computer science and engineering student Sikhar Patranabis has scored 9.87 and passed out as the highest-ranked graduate this year. He is tipped to get the President of India Gold Medal. The lure of a high-paying pre-placement job offer from Microsoft, however, could not distract this talent away from his passion for research. Patranabis has now decided to stay back at the IIT campus and do a PhD on hardware security for embedded systems. “I never wanted to get into a corporate job after B Tech. My interest is in research and academics and I want to pursue that. I never had any second

thoughts on this. All my teachers and my family supported me in this decision,” he said. Patranabis is in the minority amongst top rankers as most of them are now on their way to the corporate world. Amongst high rankers, he will only have Anirban Santara from electronics and electrical communication engineering department to give company as a fellow PhD student at the IIT. “There has been a trend of 1-2 high-ranked students staying back for PhD in IIT. But the top ranker staying back with us is rare,” IITKgp Director Partha Pratim Chakrabarti said.

Agency | Bhagalpur Former Delhi law minister Jitendra Singh Tomar was greeted with rotten eggs, tomatoes and ink by members of different student organisations on his arrival at the TM Bhagalpur University (TMBU) on Friday. Tomar, who is on police remand on the charge of possessing a fake law degree, was brought to TMBU headquarters by a Delhi police team as part of its ongoing investigation into the case. As Tomar was escorted inside the administrative

building of the university, activists of the AISA, Chhatra Yuva Shakti, Chhatra LJP and other student organisations raised slogan against him and tried to throw eggs at him. The Delhi ex-law minister has claimed he had been a student of the Vishwanath Singh Institute of Legal Studies (VSILS), Munger, an affiliated unit of the TMBU, and possessed a valid law degree from the university. The university administration had informed the Delhi high court through an affidavit it had never issued any law

degree to Tomar. Sources at the TMBU campus said Tomar was quizzed on issues concerning his admission at VSILS, Munger, his registration in the university as a law student and also about his provisional law degree that the university has already stated was fake. A Delhi police team that reached Bhagalpur ahead of Tomar on Friday morning held discussions with university officials who had carried out the verification of the provisional law degree of Tomar and pronounced it as fake.

2 / Dt. 13-06-2015, Saturday Editors’ Picks SATURDAY, JUNE 13, 2015 Army’s Myanmar strike: Governments don’t sing about covert operations First there is the operation; then there are the optics. Based on available reports, the cross-border operation in Myanmar seems to have been professionally executed. The army’s statement was appropriately terse. The operation was not without precedent. But the government deserves credit for putting in place all the diplomatic, intelligence and other ingredients that made it possible in quick time. But the messaging around the operation seems to have muddied the waters. Some of the muddying is on familiar themes. The chest-thumping of some ministers seems quite out of proportion and potentially dangerous. India has a more complicated history with effective cross-border operations than is usually acknowledged. The political narrative around the operations, not the facts, is what seems to be changing. But let us look at the politics of messaging in different frames. Any political establishment is understandably tempted to take credit for a successful operation. This is particularly true for a government whose self-image is so muscular and whose core constituency gets energised by such events. But aggressive domestic political messaging runs two risks. First, it probably makes cross-border operations subject to more overt scrutiny of the wrong kind. Operational details put out to make its impact more vivid can potentially damage the integrity of covert operations. If there is spin, one has to be careful that it does not damage the credibility of the government. Exactly how “cross-border” was this cross-border operation? But more seriously, aggressive domestic messaging creates a new sense of habituation and expectation, which can in turn reduce the government’s room for political manoeuvre later. Such operations have to be mounted when conditions are right and the risks manageable. But if you have a political culture that expects these operations routinely, where after every incident the government is compelled to explain why it isn’t going after targets, the risk of misjudgement becomes higher. Covert ops and cross-border raids are kept covert not just for operational reasons, but because you want to be careful about the culture of expectation they set up. You also risk embarrassing friendly governments that support you. Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore claimed that this operation sends a message to countries like Pakistan. It is a bit of nonsense to suggest this. Pakistan and India both know that the nature of their military, political and nuclear relationship is different. But there are two elements to the message that this government has been trying to send to Pakistan and other neighbours. First, that India’s security red lines are clear and there will be less waffling. There is no incompatibility between asserting these lines clearly and extending a hand for cooperation in other areas.

An inexperienced Indian football side gave a good fight before going down 1-2 against Oman in the home leg match of the 2018 World Cup Preliminary Qualification round here today. Oman, ranked 40 places above India in the FIFA chart at 101, scored through Qasim Said (first minute) and Imad Al Hosani (40th, penalty) while Sunil Chhetri was on target for India with a superb goal in the 26th minute. The 19,000-odd crowd at the Kanteerava Stadium thought that India had equalised in the 69th minute but to their dismay, the linesman ruled that Robin was offside. CK Vineeth essayed a cross from the right towards Oman goal and defender Sallam Amur flicked the ball into his own net but the linesman thought that

Robin was in off-side position before that. India coach Stephen Constantine gave debut to four players, including three in the back four, and the inexperience showed as the home side were in the backfoot from the beginning by conceding a goal in the first minute. Then, a debutant Dhanachandra Singh went for a reckless challenge on an Oman attacker to concede the decisive penalty. In fact, the most experienced

Indian players after the duo of Sunil Chhetri and goalkeeper Subrata Paul, who each have played more than 50 international matches, were captain Arnab Mondal and Robin Singh -- who each have donned India colours in 10-odd matches. The fancied Oman dominated the match throughout with several shots at the Indian goal while the home side had just a couple of goal-bound attempts. The Indian backline were under severe pressure trying to fend incessant Oman attackers and the home side were lucky not to have lost the match by a bigger margin largely due to poor finishing by visiting team. It did not take long for Oman to take the lead as Qasim Said put them ahead in less than 30 seconds into the match from the first goal-bound attack.

To prevent theft of mangoes, Valsad fruit growers install CCTV cameras Correspondent | Surat

Following several incidents of mango theft from orchards in Valsad district, many fruit growers in the region, famous for its Alphonso and Kesar mangoes, have installed CCTV cameras to pre-empt such attempts. Due to unseasonal rain this year in the region, the fruit growers have suffered loss in mango production, and so they have taken a few extra measures to preserve and sell whatever stock remains with them. The summer is the peak season for mango consumption, and the fruit is also heavily exported to countries like the UK, the US and the Gulf nations. However, recently around 10 complaints of mango theft have been reported with different police stations in Valsad district. In some cases, police have

arrested the accused and also managed to recover the stolen mangoes. In the wake of the recent mango thefts, the orchard owners are trying ways to prevent such incidents. And the trend of installing CCTV cameras in the orchards is gaining popularity. Rakesh Kachhadia, a farmer who grows mangoes, teak and chikhoos at his orchard in Kooperli village, around 10 kilometers from Vapi, had deployed security guards to stop such thefts. The move, however, did not bring desired results. A month ago, Kachhadia

installed CCTV cameras in his 4.3-acre orchard. The farmer claims there was no incident of mangoes being stolen from his orchard since he installed the CCTV cameras. He said, “This year, we have installed CCTV cameras at different locations to overcome theft incidents. It cost me Rs 75,000. We have also erected a watchtower for constant watch on the fields. The CCTV cameras are of good quality with night vision. It is a one-time investment with minor maintenance.”

A Buddha tourist circuit in Gujarat was among the high points of the meeting between Chinese president Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in September 2014 in Ahmedabad. But recent construction around the 4th century AD Buddhist cave in Khambalida, in Jetpur taluka of Rajkot, is an eyesore for heritage conservationists. The facade of the ancient Buddhist cave has been hidden behind a fibre-

glass shield. Inside, the floor has been plastered with freshly-laid stone tiles. These are the interventions of the Gujarat archaeology department which doesn’t seem to have understood the ba-

sics of conservation. The reason given for constructing the grotesque canopy is constant seepage from cracks during monsoon, which was dissolving the facade of the limestone cave.

Guj bizmen give roads a miss, take charter planes instead Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

A UK-based Gujarati businessman recently gave the highway a miss and hired a chopper to fly to Dholera, Radhanpur and Khavda in border districts of the state to survey land for a project he wishes to set up in Gujarat. In the last 12 months, a good 200 chartered services were hired by industrialists to fly within India for business as well as leisure trips. About 50 chartered flights hired by Gujarati businessmen flew to various foreign destinations.Until 201213, the number of chartered flights for international destinations could be counted on fingertips. “The number increased in 2013-14 with 10 such flights heading towards African nations. In last one year, this number has gone up to 50,” says

Captain Kaushal Sohagia, director Aniket Air Services Pvt Ltd. Success of Vibrant Gujarat summit and large investments flowing into Gujarat has pushed the demand for chartered flights in the state, says industry sources. “Many companies hire choppers for foreign executives who come for a short visits,” says Sohagia. Growing preference for charters prompted an online travel portal to launch chartered flight services between Ahmedabad and Bhutan in April this year. Beginning May, they have operated six flights. The company now plans similar service to Turkey from Ahmedabad. Officials in Ahmedabad based aviation companies say chartered jets are also rented from Delhi and Mumbai to meet client requirements.

Dahej industrial units hit as effluent pipeline ruptures

Large number of industrial units in Dahej special economic zone (SEZ) and Vilayat Industrial Estate are staring at production losses after the main 12.5 km pipeline discharging effluents into the high sea was damaged on Wednesday morning. Officials said that the suction system at one of the four pumps at the main pumping station in Dahej broke, resulting in large quantity of effluents gushing out. The pumping station was submerged and all industries were immediately told to stop discharging their effluents. The pipeline, managed by Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC), dis-

charges nearly 23 million litres effluents per day four km into the sea. “After intimation, it took sometime for the units to stop the discharge. In the meantime, some effluents also flowed into a storm water drainage pipeline and eventually into the Narmada estuary,” A A Dolti, regional officer, Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB), told TOI. It is estimated that nearly 70,000 litres of effluents have flowed into the estuary and if more is discharged, there is a threat to the marine environment. M A Hania, president of Dahej Industries Association, said, “The situation is very bad as repairs will take at least two to three days.

The reason given for constructing the grotesque canopy is constant seepage from cracks during monsoon, which was dissolving the facade of the limestone cave. However, conservationists say there were better ways of protecting the monument — which

had braved the vagaries of nature for over 1,600 years — than covering it with artificial material. Ajanta caves had faced a similar problem and were reinforced with compatible material. Khambhalida has three caves. The entrance of the central cave, ‘chaitya’, is flanked by two large sculptures of Avalokiteshvara Padmapani and Avalokiteshvara Vajrapani — both forms of Buddha. This is the only depiction of the Avalokiteshvara in a Gujarat cave.
