Uber Launches Service With Taxi Drivers in Colombia Ride-hailing app Uber will offer access to its platform to regular taxi drivers in Colombia, it said on Wednesday, replicating a move it has already rolled out in other countries in Latin America and Europe since last year. Uber has launched Uber Taxi in an alliance with TaxExpress, a service that will be initially offered in Colombia’s capital Bogota and third-largest city Cali. As in other countries, Uber has faced serious challenges in Colombia amid accusations of unfair competition, which resulted in authorities ordering the company to halt operations in 2019, a decision which was overturned by a court last year. Colombia lacks clear regulation for ride-hailing apps. While other companies such as Didi and Cabify operate in the country, drivers have faced fines and other sanctions for providing ride-hailing services, as well as aggression from taxi drivers.

Union minister Bhupender Yadav all of whom claimed that the Opposition was adamant of continuing with their behaviour. Agency News: New Delhi Union ministers Piyush Goyal, Anurag Thakur and parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi condemned the behaviour of MPs from the Opposition parties even as they said the parliamentarians ‘refused’ to apologise for what the ‘ruckus’ they caused in the House. These Union ministers were also joined by minister for minority affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, minister for education Dharmendra Pradhan and newly inducted Union minister Bhupender Yadav all of whom claimed that the Opposition was

adamant of continuing with their behaviour. “Forget about apologising, when asked the MPs said they would do the same thing again, multiple times if required. The MPs from Congress, Trinamool Congress and Aam Aadmi Party have set a new low with this behaviour. Their actions have lowered the respect people have for the Parliament,” Goyal said during the press conference. Goyal blamed the Congress for the ‘ruckus’ and said their actions are condemnable as he demanded strict action be taken against the MPs. He said that the tables and chairs in the Parliament are not kept for ‘protesting by standing on top of them’ and ‘rule books are to be studied and referred to and not hurled at the Chair’. Parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi said this was not the first time that Parliament saw ruckus over issues but termed the behaviour by the Opposition MPs on Wednesday ‘unbelievable’.

The Congress on Thursday hit out at the government over the alleged manhandling of women lawmakers in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday with Rahul Gandhi saying this was the first time in India’s history that parliamentarians were “beaten up” inside the Upper House. In a letter to Rajya Sabha chairperson Venkaiah Naidu, Mallikarjun Kharge, the Opposition Leader in the Upper House, condemned “unacceptable (use of ) force” and “manhandling of the MPs including women members.”“A very large number of security

personnel, who were not part of the regular ... watch and ward staff of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat were deployed. They used unacceptable force and physically manhandled Members of Parliament, including women members,” he wrote. He added the incident was shocking and also an “unprecedented insult to our democracy and the very dignity of the House.” Khrage said Opposition MPs were stopped from protesting against the General Insurance (Amendment) Bill on which he said there was a “wide consensus” that it should be sent.

SUNVILLA SAMACHAR India At A Critical Juncture Toxic Fusion Of Hindutva, Neo-Liberalism

As India celebrates the completion of 74 years of independence and enters the period leading up to the 75th anniversary of independence in 2022, the country is truly at a critical juncture. The ideals of the freedom struggle, which suffused the making of a Republican Constitution and anchored our parliamentary democracy, have got eroded over the decades. But a qualitative change occurred after the BJP-RSS combine acquired the levers of State power. Since 2014, there has been the toxic fusion of Hindutva and neo-liberal capitalism, which poses the most potent threat to all the ideals of the freedom struggle – democracy, secularism and national sovereignty. The BJP-RSS began the long march to capture all the State institutions and subvert them from within to achieve the goal of `Hindu Rashtra’. If one goes through the Independence Day speeches of Narendra Modi in the past three years, one can get glimpses of the contours of the “New India” that they envisage. Narendra Modi in his Independence Day speech on August 15, 2018 spoke about making a “New India” by 2022, on the 75th anniversary of independence. What this “New India” means began to unfold subsequently. In 2019, ten days after the state of Jammu & Kashmir was abolished after stripping it of its special status on August 5, Modi announced proudly in his Independence Day speech that he had accomplished the idea of “One Nation, One Constitution” and the dream of Sardar Patel of “Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat”. This sounded more like the RSS’s Akhand Bharat. The same year in December, the Citizenship Amendment Act was enacted in Parliament whereby for the first time citizenship was linked to religious criteria. This went against the basic concept of citizenship in a secular State. The following year, in 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, on August 5, the foundation ceremony of Ram temple at Ayodhya was conducted by the Prime Minister in the presence of the RSS chief. Modi declared this as a day of freedom. In the Independence Day speech, ten days later, he announced that, “A peaceful culmination has been achieved to the age-oldissue of Ram Janmabhoomi”. Behind the “peaceful” culmination lay the trail of violence andbloodshed in which thousands of people lost their lives after the demolition of the BabriMasjid in December 1992.But for Modi, the temple signified something else also: “EachIndian must sacrifice something or the other in the magnanimous yajna for development”.The temple thus becomes a symbol of national development and every Indian must sacrificefor it. The symbols of “New India” thus emerged in the last two years – the Ram temple atAyodhya, the Central Vista with a new Parliament building and the dismantling of the state of Jammu & Kashmir. These perversely signify the assault on secularism, democracy andfederalism – in that order. The “New India” is a toxic mixture of Hindutva authoritarianism and corporate neo-liberalism.The three years since Modi announced the goal of a “New India” have seen steep cuts incorporate taxes, the writing off of loans worth lakhs of crores of rupees of big corporates andplans for dismantling the public sector through large-scale privatization. The three farm lawswere railroaded through Parliament to enable corporate entry into agricultural trade andmarketing. An India is being created with obscene levels of inequality. According to theCredit Suisse Wealth Report of 2021, the share of wealth of the top 1 percent went upto 40.5percent by end 2020. Another report, the Forbes Report, estimated that the number ofbillionaires went up from 102 in 2020 to 140 in 2021. This at a time when there is anunprecedented increase in absolute poverty, in both rural and urban areas, in times of thepandemic. In his Independence Day speech last year in 2020, Modi gave the slogan of `AatmanirbharBharat’ implying that the “New India’ will be self-reliant. He said, “As we are one step awayfrom the 75th anniversary of independence, it is essential for the country like India to standon its own and to become selfreliant”.The scale of hypocrisy is breath-taking. After Modi’s declaration of self-reliance, thegovernment announced as part of the `Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan’ package that except inthe strategic - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara sectors, all Stateowned firms.

Don’t use public interest as an additional ground to restrict free speech Agency News: New Delhi In a recent decision, a division bench in the Bombay high court exercised a power that vests solely with the Parliament; it, in effect, amended the Constitution. The matter involved nine petitions that challenged Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) regulations in broadcasting (full disclosure — I work with broadcasters).
