When he returned a couple of hours later, he realised that Shukla had been at it the entire time, without pause.“Such was our dedication to the dance form,” he had said to Guru Nisha Mahajan, his disciple of many years, while recounting the incident. A doyen of the Lucknow gharana, Pt Munna Shukla passed away in his Delhi home on January 11, following a brief illness. Food prices push retail inflation to 6-month high Agency News: New Delhi THE RETAIL inflation rate rose to a six-month high of 5.59 per cent in December, primarily due to increase in food prices, according to data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO).Another set of data released by NSO Wednesday showed that industrial output grew by 1.4 per cent in November despite a low base of (-)1.6 per cent in the previous year, as manufacturing and mining outputs were subdued amid weak investment and consumption demand.The low base effect and higher food inflation pushed up the headline retail inflation, with core inflation — non-food, non-fuel — hovering near 6 per cent and the impending full pass-through effect of the telecom price hike yet to filter in.Also, with retail inflation inching closer to the upper tolerance level of the 4+/-2 per cent target of the RBI, economists expect only a negligible chance of a hike in rate, especially reverse repo, in the upcoming monetary policy review meeting in February.

Omicron Threatens The Public Health System As A Superspreader
Omicron spread across the world has made the world understand: that vaccines alone donot prevent the spread of COVID-19; that people need to follow the five majorrecommendations – wearing well-fitted masks, safe distancing, avoiding crowds, cleaninghands, and opening windows; that the currently available vaccines need to be updated; andthat only the government is capable of protecting the people and the private sector andtherefore doing away with the public sector in favour of private sector is wrong.The latest COVID-19 wave led by the new variant Omicron is considered as milder than theother variants. It escapes the immunity created by the present vaccines and therefore it hasbeen threatening to overwhelm the health facilities and workers available for the patients.Omicron variant represents a “new west to east tidal wave”. Situation has become alarming,for example, in Europe, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) forecasts,over 50 per cent of the population will be infected with Omicron within six to eight weeks. Inthis case both the health workers and the health facilities will be overwhelmed.In its situation update, experts from WHO has said that the data collected in recent weeksconfirmed that Omicron is highly transmissible: “Because the mutations it has, enable it toadhere to human cells more easily, and it can infect even those who have been previouslyinfected or vaccinated.”However, it does not mean that vaccines are totally ineffective. WHO experts have said thatthe “currently approved vaccines do continue to provide good protection against severedisease and death, including for Omicron. That is why the WHO mantra remains intact, thatis – Vaccination, third doses or boosters, increased mask use, ventilation of crowded orclosed spaces, and the application of new clinical protocol.“Because of the unprecedent scale of transmission, we are now seeing rising COVID-19hospitalisations. It is challenging health systems and service delivery in many countrieswhere Omicron has spread at speed,” threatening to overwhelm many more, WHO haswarned.The interim statement of the WHO Technical Advisory Group on COVID-19 VaccineComposition, which was established in September 2021 has said that current COVID19vaccines may need to be updated to ensure their continued effectiveness against Omicronand future variants. Even though, amid increased Omicron circulation, it has called for“urgent and broad access” to current vaccines globally, both for protection and to mitigatethe emergence of new variants of concerns (VoCs). Presently 18 member experts of this group are developing a framework to analyze theevidence on emerging VoCs “in the context of criteria that would trigger a recommendation to change COVID-19 vaccine strain composition and will advise WHO on updated vaccine compositions, as required.” They have said that vaccines that have a high impact onprevention of infection and transmission, in addition to prevention of severe disease anddeath, are needed and should be developed.“Until such vaccines are available, and as the SARS-CoV-2 virus evolves, the composition ofcurrent COVID-19 vaccines may need to be updated, to ensure that COVID-19 vaccinescontinue to provide WHO-recommended levels of protection against infection and disease byVOCs, including Omicron and future variants,” they statement read. The WHO Technical Advisory Group will consider a change in vaccine composition toensure doses continue to meet WHO criteria, including protection against severe disease,and to improve vaccine-induced protection.It is here, the vaccine manufacturers have a great role to play, because the vaccines theyproduce need to be “based on strains that are genetically and antigenically close” tocirculating variants. Additionally, the WHO Technical Group has said, they must protectagainst severe disease and death, and be more effective against infection, thus loweringvirus transmission and the need for stringent public health and social measures. They havealso encouraged the manufactures of vaccines to generate and share data on theperformance of current and Omicronspecific vaccines so that informed decision can betaken as to when changes to vaccine composition may be required.In the meantime the people need to wear masks, avoid crowds, maintain safe distance, - Kapilkumar M. Agency News:New Delhi The Delhi government has directed its officials to open temporary vaccination centres for children in the age group 1518 years in its 20 schools where health clinics are operational.The vaccination drive for children in the age group began on January 3.“All DDEs (Distts.) and DDEs (Zones) are hereby directed to open temporary vaccination centres for students in age group of 15-18 years in the 20 schools wherein School Health Clinics are operational,” Directorate of Education (DoE) said in an official order. “The officers are to coordinate with the district magistrates in order to set up the vaccination centres. Separate sufficient space shall be provided by school principals for the vaccination centres,” it added. On Wednesday, the DoE also directed its officials to take various measures to ramp up COVID-19 vaccination of children in the age group of 15-17.
