20 killed as three blasts rock Peshawar Peshawar At least 20 people were killed and over 50 injured when Kalashnikov-wielding Taliban suicide bombers stormed a crowded minority Shia mosque in Pakistan’s restive northwest during Friday prayers, opening fire and exploding bombs in a revenge attack, the latest in a series of sectarian violence to hit the country. The attack comes exactly two weeks after a suicide bombing inside a packed Shia mosque in Pakistan’s Sindh province during the Friday prayers killed 61 people, including children, in the deadliest sectarian attack to hit the country in recent times. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan

(TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack at the Imamia Masjid Imambargah in the posh Hayatabad area here where worshippers had gathered for the ‘Zuhr’ afternoon Friday prayers and warned that Friday’s was the first in a series of revenge attacks. The Imambargah is situated close to several government buildings, including the local passport centre and the Federal Investigation Agency offices. At least three explosions and gunfire was heard. A doctor of Hayatabad Medical Complex, where the bodies and the injured were taken, said that 20 people have been killed and about 50 suffered wounds in the

attack. Four suicide attackers were involved in the attack, said Shafqat Malik, chief of bomb disposal unit that defused one suicide bomber ’s jacket. Three attackers – who entered the mosque carrying grenades and Kalashnikovs – exploded their vests while one was killed by security forces,

from Surat had accused Asaram and his son Narayan Sai of rape, was shot dead in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district. Witness Rahul Sachan, one of the 'sewadars' of Asaram, was in the court premises with police security today when he was attacked, according to prosecution counsel P C Solanki. SHO of Udaimandir police station, Harji Ram, said that Sachan

was attacked while he was boarding the police vehicle after coming out of the court. "The moment he attempted to step into the police jeep, Satya Narayan rushed with a knife in hand and stabbed him in ribs," Harji Ram said. Sachan was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital and the assailant, who also got injured in the melee, was arrested by the police. Sachan's condition is stated to be stable. Satya Narayan claimed that he was a devotee of Asaram. "Sachan had turned a prosecution witness and was apprising the court about the modus operandi of Asaram," said Solanki.

Another prosecution witness in Asaram case attacked in court

Jodhpur, A prosecution witness in Asaram sexual assault case was on Friday stabbed by a man who claimed to be a devotee of the self-styled godman at a court premises here, with two key witnesses in another case being faced by the 72-year-old godman already slain by assailants. The attack comes exactly a month after a key witness in a case, in which two sisters

Terror Group ISIS to be Banned in India

NEW DELHI The dreaded terror group ISIS and all its affiliate organisations will be banned by India under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act soon. Anotification declaring ISIS and its affiliates ISIL and IS as proscribed organisations will be issued very soon, official sources said today. Home Minister

Rajnath Singh had said in Parliament on December 16, 2014 that the Middle-East group had been declared banned in India under a United Nations Schedule. Mr Singh had said the group has been proscribed under the provisions related to organisations listed in the Schedule to the UN Prevention and Suppression

of Terrorism (Implementation of Security Council Resolutions) Order, 2007 made under section two of the United Nations (Security Council) Act, 1947. Four men from Mumbai had gone to IraqSyria in May 2014 to join ISIS. One of them returned late last year while the whereabouts of the remaining three are yet to be known. A Bangalore-based executive of a multi-national company was arrested in December last year for allegedly running a pro-ISIS Twitter handle. Last month, another person from Hyderabad was barred from travelling to Syria, ostensibly to join ISIS.

Malik said. Head of the provincial police Nasir Durrani said an attacker was killed by worshippers at the mosque. “People here showed great courage. They grabbed one of the attackers from his neck, and he couldn’t detonate (his explosives), and he was shot and killed,” Durrani added. The style of Friday’s attack bore a striking similarity to the December 16 Peshawar carnage, in which the gunmen arrived in a car, set it on fire and broke into the building using a back entrance. In a video sent by email to reporters, TTP said the attack was revenge for Pakistan’s crackdown on

militants following the school massacre. “Either Pakistan will become your graveyard, or God’s law, sharia, will be implemented,” Taliban commander Khaleefa Omar Mansoor said in the video in

which he was flanked by three young militants toutingAK-47 assault rifles.“This is the first in a series of revenge attacks… Wait for the rest,” said Mansoor, who had earlier claimed responsibility

for the Peshawar school attack in which 150 people, including 136 children, were killed. An eyewitness said Friday prayers were being offered when armed men wearing security forces’ uniform entered the mosque and hurled grenades at the security personnel deputed at the premises. The militants exchanged fire with security forces for nearly two and a half hours, police said. Television footage showed images of people running frantically as the area was covered with thick smoke.

Christian school vandalized in Delhi

New Delhi An unidentified group Friday ransacked a Christian school here, police said. Staff members of the Holy Child Auxilium school in south Delhi's Vasant Vihar told police that a few CCTV cameras installed in the school premises were

damaged and the office of the principal was ransacked. "Some CCTV cameras were damaged and the office of the school principal was ransacked by some unidentified people early Friday," Delhi Catholic Archdiocese spokesperson Father Savarimuthu Sankar

told IANS. Sankar said school children have been sent back to their homes after the incident came to light. Leaders of the Christian community said some members of a group have been intentionally targeting the community and this is the sixth such attack within 11 weeks. Sankar claimed that the attack sent a clear message that a group is trying to "fill fear" among the Christian community. He said that five churches have been attacked since December 2014 and this is the sixth such attack. "We see a clear pattern in all the

attacks. Earlier we thought that these attacks have a connection with the Delhi polls," said Sankar. "Now it has been clear that this is a handiwork of some fundamentalist group whose motive is to fill fear among the Christian community," Sankar said. Father Mahew Koyickal told IANS: "The intention of the attackers is to unnerve the Christian community. Since December, five churches have been targeted on regular interval. We demanded that the case should be investigated from all angles," he said.

Multiple agencies, from Delhi Police to Public Works Department are working in tandem to secure the venue ahead of the big day. Stay on Setalvad's arrest extended Varun Dhawan: I miss my old life

A bench of Justice Sudhansu Jyoti Mukhopadhaya and Justice N.V. Ramana extended the restraint order passed Thursday by the bench headed by Chief Justice H.L.Dattu as they directed the hearing of the petition by Setalvad and Anand Feb 19. It also permitted their counsel Kapil Sibal to file additional documents including their pleas before the Gujarat High Court. As Sibal, at the hearing's beginning, remarked there were "very few people who have the courage of taking on the state", the court asked him to avoid political flavours to his submission as for it, every litigant was a common citizen. At this, Sibal said his clients were common citizens and can't be treated differently as he contended they were being singled out. He noted Gujarat Police reached Setalvad's residence in Mumbai to arrest her even before the high court verdict rejecting their plea for anticipatory bail was pronounced. In a parting observation after adjourning the matter, Justice Mukhopadhaya said that "there will be justice to both but relief to one". As the hearing began, the court said that they have not gone through the high court judgment and would hold an independent hearing on the facts as it asked Sibal to read the FIR. Assailing the high court judgment, Sibal said it had drawn conclusions which were contrary to the documents that were placed before it. As he told the court that it had held that custodial interrogation could be only in cases of murder, dacoity or other heinous crimes and not in cases of alleged cheating and misappropriation, Justice Mukhopadhaya said at that time, there were no scams running into crores and crores of rupees. There was no scam here either, Sibal said, contending that if there are allegations of cheating and misappropriation, then the same could only be levelled by the people who had donated money for the setting up of the museum at Gulberg society in Ahmedabad and not by those who are not associated with it. "Who is the person who is cheated? Is he a donor? Is there a complaint by a donor? If (at all) there is a breach of trust, it is that of donor. The complaint was on the forged letter of the society," he argued.Noting that Setalvad had used the photographs of the victims to mobilise funds for the museum, the court said that the "allegations are so grave". "You have collected funds (taking) undue advantage of riot victims... shown their photographs to foreigners and obtained money," it said. In return, Sibal said: "If this is the approach of this court, don't allow the might of the state, show us single piece of evidence (supporting the allegations)." He told the court that Seetalvad's NGO received a little more than Rs.4 lakh from the donors from within the country and Rs.50,000 from abroad to set up the museum. As Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta sought to meet Sibal's submission by referring to the high court judgment, Justice Mukhopadhaya reminded him that they have not read it. As Mehta cited the alleged ostentatious life style of Setalvad and her husband and their foreign travels, a lawyer in the court referred to the Rs.10 lakh suit Prime Minister Narendra Modi wore during his talks with visiting US President Barack Obama.

Boffins say comets are like fried ice-cream

offins working for Caltech and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory have created comet-like stuff in a cryostat. Along the way, they've decided that your average comet is kind of like fried ice-cream: squishy on the inside, crusty on the outside, with organic chemicals dusted on top. Both the ESA's Rosetta and NASA's Deep Impact comet missions had found evidence of the soft, porous interiors of comets, and the Philae lander discovered the hard surface the hard way, with a triple-bounce that surprised mission scientists and degraded some of its activities. Fooling around with an icebox instrument called Himalaya, Antti Lignell at Caltech and Murthy Gudipati of JPL demonstrated, as the NASA announcement says, “that

the fluffy ice on the surface of a comet would crystallise and harden as the comet heads towards the sun and warms up”. (After all, it's still in the icy void of space – nobody says it gets warm enough to become liquid.) The ice crystals are denser and more ordered than the fluffy interior, and as a result, carbon-containing organic molecules are pushed to the surface. The fluffy interior, the researchers explain, are a form of ice not observed under normal Earth conditions. The “amorphous” porous ice forms when water vapour is flash-frozen at around 30 Kelvin, and never forms crystals. The disorderly states of amorphous ice mean it's somewhat like fairy floss (cotton candy) – light, fluffy, and with pockets of space throughout.

National Games: Preeja SPORTS ROUNDUP Sreedharan settles for silver ICC WORLD CUP-2015 COUNT-DOWN

Nearly 13,000 spectators gave Preeja Sreedharan, one of the country's greatest long distance runners, a standing ovation as she bid adieu to her favourite sport and adoring fans after winning the silver in the women's 10,000m at the University Stadium on Thursday night. Preeja was more than a lap behind when OP Jaisha completed a golden double with

another meet record 33:08.55 (old: Kavita Raut, 34:28.26) but the veteran athlete found enough strength to withstand a strong challenge from Swati Gadhave and Kavita to sprint ahead and grab the second place. The fourth day's action of track and field saw Rajinder Singh produce an unbelievable effort to rewrite the national record in men's javelin

In 2014, Apple updated its desktop operating system, allowing users that own an iPad, Mac and iPhone devices, to access their iMessages and video calls across all three devices. Now Apple is

If it is activated, then along with your Apple ID and password, a security code sent via text message to a registered phone number will be provided, in order to be able to access their devices.

throw. Rajinder, who finished 11th in the Asian Games with an effort in the 73-74m range, set a new mark with an effort of 82.23m, bettering the previous record of 80.72m set by Anil Kumar Singh in 2008. Triple-jumper Renjith Maheswary looked as if he was not bothered about the reception from the packed as he stood on top of his run-up for the first jump. But the seasoned campaigner soon got his rhythm going as he produced a meet record effort of 16.66m to eclipse Arpinder Singh's mark. Arpinder, who holds the national record, came up with a best of only 16.62m. In men's high jump, Jithin C Thomas added another gold to Services' tally, clearing the bar at 2.16m. Kerala's Sreenith Mohan took the silver, also with 2.16, and Punjab's Jagdeep Singh the bronze (2.13).

Johnson, Starc key for Australia in World Cup: David Warner

Dynamic opening batsman David Warner on Friday said Australian pacers Mitchell Johnson and Mitchell Starc will star for the co-hosts and will be crucial for the country's World Cup campaign. Speaking with cricket.com.au ahead of Saturday's opener against England, Warner identified a pair of left-arm quicks when asked who he considered were the players

to watch for Australia. "I'll give you two," Warner said. "I think Mitchell Johnson and Mitchell Starc are going to be the keys for us. It's easy to say there's a lot of batsmen to watch, but I think those two guys hold the key for our team." On current evidence, Warner's selections are understandable, with Johnson the reigning ICC Cricketer of the Year and Starc having just been

named the Player of the Tournament in the recent ODI tri-series against England and India. Johnson now sits fourth on the all-time ODI wickets list for left-arm quicks, with 224 from 145 matches. Starc has collected 61 wickets in his 33 ODIs, and despite sitting 20th on that same list, boasts a better average (21.27) and strikerate (25.5) than anyone above him. Johnson is currently ranked fifth in the ICC ODI rankings, while Starc sits in seventh spot. "If I was to say a batsman I'd say AB de Villiers (as the opposition player to watch)," he added. "He's fantastic in all conditions, he's a worldclass player. Bowling wise, I think there's a lot of good talent out here ... someone like Dale Steyn is always pretty handy.

Renjith wins maiden Games gold, Preeja signs off with silver Rajinder Singh smashed the national record in men's javelin throw, while former Asian champion Renjith Maheshwary nabbed his maiden gold with a new meet mark in triple jump as the athletics arena continued to enthrall on the penultimate day of the 35th National Games here today. But what remained unchallenged was the Services Sports Control Board's (SSCB) domination on the medals table as they remained on top with a tally of 131 (81 gold, 23 silver and 27 bronze so far). Hosts Kerala displaced Haryana from the second spot owing to a strong athletics performance to total 119 (34 gold, 37 silver and 48 bronze). Haryana took the third spot

ICC World Cup: 'Two-bench theory' is Kohli's way of countering Irfan

ICC events in recent years have witnessed the Indian cricket team devising unique ways of training and it was no different this time around with the side employing a unique 'two-bench' theory to counter the pace and bounce of Pakistani bowlers in its World Cup opener. During the last World T20 in Bangladesh, Indian bowlers were sending down deliveries to a 10-feet

tall batting mannequin to hone their skills in channel bowling. This time the batsmen devised a unique throwdown session using two small benches. The idea behind the innovation is to get well equipped to counter the threat that 7 feet tall Pakistani paceman Mohammed Irfan could pose. After Virat Kohli practised at the main nets, he went to the corner of the

St Peter's Main Oval ground to get some throwdowns from team's specialist Raghavendra. The throwdown expert was told to dig one delivery short, which Kohli would immediately move back and across to pull it effortlessly. It was followed by a fuller throwdown to counter the pitched-up delivery. Once he had taken sufficient throwdowns, Kohli and later Ajinkya Rahane went to the adjacent net where two small benches of around 20 inch in height were kept side by side. Assistant coach Sanjay Bangar stood on one of the benches with the throwdown equipment and then stepped on the other to throw balls from a good height. The logic behind such a practice is to get an idea of steep bounce that Irfan might generate from just short of good length. Bangar standing on the bench made him send down the deliveries from close to 10 feet (keeping the huge arm action of throwdowns), which will be a feet more than the height from which Irfan is expected to deliver.

NBA plans to make basketball 'second most dominant' sport in India

Basketball is predominantly a growing sport in India but the National Basketball Association (NBA) has plans to make the game the "second most dominant" sport in the country besides cricket. The popularity of NBA is incomparable worldwide and India is no exception as the nation has a rich fan following of the

sport, predominantly among the youths and that is what the NBA trying to target. "In India we can never compete with cricket and we never plan to do that. India is a cricket crazy nation and we know that. But our aim is to make basketball the second most dominant sport in India. The youths of India are looking for opportunity

other than regular sport and that is what we targeting at," NBA India managing director Yannick Colaco told on the sidelines of the popular NBA All Star Weekend on Friday. "We are consciously trying to customise and package out product so that it is assessable in India and make it a primetime product which is not easy considering the time difference between India and the US," he said. "But the good thing is that basketball is very popular among Indian youths. Interestingly, 30 per cent of our viewers in India are female." The NBA knows the importance of taking the game to the nook and corner of the country to grow the interest for the sport among the Indians.

India must identify its strengths and weaknesses: Kirsten with 33 gold, 37 silver and 22 bronze. Amid a sea of meet records tumbling, a new national record was created when Haryana's Rajinder Singh cleared 82.23m to better the 80.72m mark of Anil Kumar Singh (2008). SSCB's Davinder Singh (75.34m) and Uttar Pradesh's Vipin Kasana (75.18m) were the respective silver and bronze

medallists. Elsewhere, veteran long-distance runner Preeja Sreedharan bid adieu to the track with a 10,000m silver even as another local lady O P Jaisha stole the limelight by collecting her second gold medal at the Games with a new meet record of 33:08.55sec. She had earlier won the 5000m gold with a meet record.

Gary Kirsten has a simple and perhaps the most effective mantra for the cricket World Cup. The same mantra had helped the Indian side win the world title in 2011 and may well propel the present team on the right track in Australia. Kirsten, who coached India to its second World Cup victory four years ago, said the side must identify its strengths and weaknesses and formulate its game plan accordingly. “At the end of

the day, in order to be successful at any event you have to be very real about what you are good at and what you are not good at. It

is tough that you need to limit the damage (things) you are not good at. And I thought we did that well in 2011. We realised that it is not going to be our strength and limited the damage there,” Kirsten said at an event organised by Royal Stag in the run-up to the World Cup.It has set its own identity. Everyone wants to win the 50-over World Cup. It is important for the ongoing prosperity of the game,” he said.

There has been a rise of about 25-40 per cent in footfall in beauty salons across cities as more and more men and women go for a makeover and a variety of cosmetic and other indulgent treatments, revealed a just-concluded quick survey of ASSOCHAM under the aegis of its Social Development Foundation. Apart from getting a fancy hairdo other most popular beauty treatments include massage, hair colour, facial, hair removal, manicure, pedicure, skin treatment,

botox and tooth whitening the survey noted. It further highlighted that men are almost on a par with women when it comes to the amount of money and time they spend on looking good. ASSOCHAM Social Development Foundation had interacted with about 100 working professionals in the age group of 25-30 years (equal number of both men & women) with minimum pay package of over Rs 20,000 per month and about 30 unisex beauty salons in Ahmedabad to gauge grooming trends amid Amdavadis this Valentine's Day. The survey had been conducted during the course of last fortnight. While about 35 out of 50 women in Ahmedabad said they are getting a makeover for Valentine's day and will spend between Rs 2,000Rs 5,000 on various beauty treatments, about 10 said they are coughing up anything between Rs 5,000-

Rs 10,000 for looking their best. However, the remaining said they are not really spending much on enhancing their appearance especially for the Valentine's Day. On the other hand, about 30 men interviewed by ASSOCHAM representatives said they plan to spend anything between Rs 2,000-Rs 5,000 for various treatments at salons especially for Valentine's Day while 15 said they are not getting any special makeover for V-day and the remaining said they are splurging significant amounts on various specialty services at salons. While all the unisex beauty salons surveyed by ASSOCHAM Social Development Foundation in Ahmedabad reported a rise in footfall, about half of these said they have seen a surge of 25-50 per cent in footfall in past few days and many even said they have added significant number of new clientele.
