Jaya launches free Amma Drinking Water Scheme
As part of rolling out people friendly initiatives, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today launched ‘Amma Drinking Water Scheme’ aimed at providing free mineral water for the poor and downtrodden. Noting that the government has executed various integrated drinking water schemes costing Rs 7,324.34 crore, over the last 56 months, she said “69 new projects at a total cost of Rs 6,602.78 crore were under progress that would ensure supply of mineral water for residential localities”.

A journalist was today shot dead allegedly by some unidentified persons in Gosaiganj area here, police said. Karun Mishra (28) was shot by three unidentified persons near Katka Bazar when he was going somewhere on a motorcycle, they said. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead, police said. A state transport bus on its way to Mahuva, overturned while negotiating a curve near Savarkundla town of Amreli district, killing 10 persons and injuring 40 others seriously on Saturday. This is the second major accident involving Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) bus in a week. The accident took place at around 11 am when driver lost control of the bus while negotiating a sharp curve near railway crossing in Luvara village, some 15 km
east of Savarkundla. Police said that the bus skidded off the road and did two somersaults, killing 10 persons and injuring rest of the 40 other passengers on board. “There is a U turn at the railway crossing and the driver could not control the bus as he was going at around 45 km per hour. The bus did two somersaults after skidding off the road and killed 10 person,” resident additional collector (RAC) of Amreli, Jayntilal Thesia told Sunvilla Samachar. The

Valentine’s Day: Ours confusingly
Ads recently went up in Delhi Metro stations urging young lovers to reject Valentine’s Day and instead devote February 14 to celebrating their parents. To get the point across, the ads show dutiful children kneeling before their parents as well as another, slightly less loving, picture of a couple being “punished” by the police. The ad is apparently inspired by Asaram Bapu, whose graceful face looms above, like a judgemental spectre, all the more weird because he is currently in jail in connection with the alleged rape of a minor. This is a perfect encapsulation of the way in which South Asia greets Valentine’s Day: That is, with slight confusion. On the one hand, young couples choosing their own matches and celebrating their love in public are still seen as transgressive in the more conservative (and I think bitter) portions of society. For societies like those in South Asia that place so huge a premium on weddings (but curiously not on marriage) that they form month-long festivities and can cost millions, it seems natural that a day that celebrates coupling should be the biggest holiday of the year. But this isn’t the case. Younger people in India are getting comfortable declaring coupledom in public. The one takeaway I had from the time I lived in Mumbai was seeing a long line of couples on Marine Drive gazing out at the ocean as their lips interlocked in hormonal abandon. So why then is there still something against Valentine’s Day? One of the more popular arguments is that it is a Western imposition against the value systems indigenous to South Asia. That never really made sense since we are postcolonial and no matter what people say, shops will start selling red hearts and obese teddy bears come February. In Pakistan, Valentine’s Day has become an increasingly festive time, which may surprise you as much as it does us. But I speak the truth: Shops begin dripping with red balloons and pillows shaped like lips embroidered with phrases like “I Wuv You”, restaurants begin to advertise their pre-fix menus adorned with cupids for Valentine’s Night several weeks before V Day, flower shops go on steroids, and event managers, who I personally think are second only to heads of state in terms of their social capital in the 21st century, are knee-deep in preparations for “Valentine’s Night Balls”. Much like in India, there will inevitably be a loveless man going on about how un-Islamic the whole thing is but the fact is Valentine’s Day is now a global event and, more importantly, big business. That it has not always been so in our parts doesn’t really matter. Neither was spandex, but you get used to things. The fete is as much a part of global culture as New Year’s Eve. This decade has brought on lots of awareness of cultural appropriation.

Let’s take Divya Khosla Kumar’s second directorial feature, Sanam Re, as an example. If the director or the producers – T-Series’ Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar – had listened to any doubts they may have had during the making of this film, we might have been spared yet another
ill-conceived love story. Unfortunately, they didn’t and as a result, Sanam Re exists. The alleged plot of the film is incoherent, cliche-ridden and was probably written by the children who appear in the intermittent flashbacks. The movie begins with Akash (Pulkit Samrat) who is too busy struggling up the corporate ladder to find time for love or even answer his mother’s phone calls. Even as he allows his obnoxious boss (a hammy Manoj Joshi) to bully him, he can’t escape the life that he has left behind in Tanakpur, a place, where no matter
what time of the year it is, the CGI snow keeps falling. When Akash is called home to help sell off the derelict photo studio that once belonged to his ailing grandfather (a bewigged, bespectacled Rishi Kapoor), we are helpfully given some glimpses into the past so that the director can drive home the point of the film – which is that no matter how hard you try, you can’t escape love. Or something like that. We also discover that Akash once had a childhood sweetheart Shruti (Yami Gautam) who he gave up in his search for material success.

Agency | Mumbai Amid mounting bad debts for public sector banks, Bank of Baroda on Saturday reported a net loss of Rs 3,342.04 crore for the third quarter (Q3) -- the biggest-ever quarterly loss for any lender in the country. The bank had recorded a standalone net profit of Rs 333.98 crore in the same quarter of the last fiscal. Bank of Baroda said total income declined to Rs 11,726.95 crore in the quarter ended December 31, 2015, from Rs 11,808.34 crore in the year-ago period. The bank’s gross non-performing assets (GNPAs) ratio rose to 9.68% from 3.85% in the year-ago quarter, while net NPAs ratio soared to 5.67% from 2.11%. The bank’s gross NPAs more than doubled to Rs 38,934 crore from Rs 15,452 crore in the year-ago period. This led to a surge in provisioning, which shaved off the bottom line.

He notes there is no manual setting used which probably hints at manual mode option in the upcoming flagship. Few days back, Xiaomi co-founder posted first samples shot with Mi 5 on his Weibo account. The company is set to launch the phone on February 24 and will be holding a media preview for the same device at MWC in Spain. If rumours are anything to be believed, Xiaomi Mi 5 will feature a 5.2-inch display with either full HD or Quad HD resolution. It is expected to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 chipset. Xiaomi Mi 5 is likely to launch in two variants – 3GB RAM with 32GB storage and 4GB RAM with 64GB storage. Vinayak Apte ‘Tatya’ made an unusual ‘homecoming’ to Sabarmati Ashram on Friday, almost 86 years after taking part in the historic Dandi march in March-April 1930. He was one of the 79 marchers who had vowed, along with Bapu, that they would not return to the Ashram until India was free. Apte died in 1987 at his home Aptewada in Sadashivpeth, Pune. On Friday, ‘Tatya’ Apte (as he was fondly called by his peers) ‘returned’ to Gandhi Ashram in the form of 98 letters he had exchanged with Bapu on a variety of issues from ways to popularize Khadi to ideas on health, hygiene, community activities and even politics. The letters were carefully preserved by Apte’s son, Sriganesh (a metallurgist)
