Mega MMRCA project for 126 jets to be scrapped Agency : NEW DELHI The Modi government has sounded the death knell for the deadlocked $20 billion MMRCA (medium multirole combat aircraft) project to acquire 126 fighters, which was dubbed the "mother of all defence deals" around the globe after competition for it was launched by the previous UPA regime in 2007. Defence minister Manohar Parrikar on Monday also made it clear that if India goes in for additional French Rafale fighters, after the outright purchase of 36 jets decided during the Modi-Hollande summit in Paris last Friday, it will also be through government-togovernment deals. The stalled final negotiations for the MMRCA project, in

which Rafale emerged the winner in January 2012 after a hotly-contested open global competition, had envisaged the induction of 126 fighters - the first 18 through direct acquisition from France, with the rest to be made by Hindustan Aeronautics in India after transfer of technology. Even though Parrikar did not utter the words "scrap" or "cancel" in connection with the MMRCA project, he used enough analogies to stress exactly that. "A car cannot travel on two roads at the same time. The other road (MMRCA) had a lot of problems," Parrikar said.

The mine-protected vehicle, with 11 state police jawans aboard, was dispatched from Cholnar camp for security of the construction work in the region, around 450 km from state capital Raipur. The rebels triggered the blast, leaving four personnel dead and seven others injured, Kalluri said. “Of the injured, two are said to be in a serious condition.” Soon after the incident, reinforcement was rushed to

the spot and the injured admitted to a local hospital, he said. A combing operation has been launched to nab the attackers, the IG added. A

In Gujarat, CAs and engineers sign up as property dealers Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

The real estate broking industry seems to be in a makeover in Gujarat. The real estate player RE/Max has a rising number of white collar professionals, including chartered accountants, lawyers, and engineers, besides top officials of private companies, becoming its franchisee 'property dealers'. The firm has seen a surge in enrolment for franchisees from the unexpected segment of professionals. The reason, it says, is of course handsome money from the brokerage. Also, the franchisee offers them the freedom of doing business at their conve-

Baithiya Border Security Force camp under the Bande Police Station area late last night, said Jitendra Singh Meena, Kanker superintendent of police. A gunbattle ensued between the security forces and the ultras, who soon fled to the core forests, he added. This is the fourth attack by insurgents in the state in the last three days. Seven Special Task Force (STF) personnel were killed and 10 others injured on Saturday when Naxals ambushed them in the forests of Pidmel village in Sukma district. The rebels on Sunday set ablaze at least 17 vehicles engaged in mining work in

Kanker district. No one was hurt in the incident, police said. The deceased BSF head constable has been identified as Ramesh Kumar Solanki, hailing from Uttrakhand. “He succumbed to bullet injuries, sustained during the gunfight, while being taken to a local hospital,” the SP said. The body of a suspected Naxalite, in police combat fatigues, was recovered from the encounter spot with three improvised explosive devices (IEDs) placed near it to target the security personnel. Meanwhile, BSF chief D.K. Pathak will review security arrangements in the district and other areas.

Gujarat hardens stand on water sharing with Maharashtra Sunvilla News, Gandhinagar

Gujarat has demanded that Maharashtra agree to share more water from the Tapi if it wants more from the proposed Damanganga-Pinjal link which will supply Mumbai. This decision comes in the wake of events in the Maharashtra assembly two days back when the House had to be adjourned after the opposition disrupted proceedings over the agreement with Gujarat over water sharing for Damanganga-Pinjal and Par-Tapi-Narmada link projects. B N Navalawala, advisor to Gujarat chief minister on water resources development and former

secretary, water resources, central government, said that Gujarat is ready to share water from Damanganga and allow the development of Pinjal link. "But this can be possible only if Maharashtra agrees to share equal quantity of water from the Tapi basin that falls in Maharashtra. There will be no compromise on this issue. It will be pure barter agreement," Navalawala said. He further emphasized that Maharashtra first has to sign an agreement for this along with an assurance from the central government. "We have already informed the central government in writing," he said.

Any future Rafale jet purchases will be govt-to-govt: Parrikar

nience. "There is a growing interest from highly educated and professional individuals to get into property dealership. There is a need for such people, especially for luxury property deals. This provides them a good opportunity to make produc-

tive use of their network resources and extra time," Manan Choksi, regional director, RE/Max - Gujarat told BusinessLine. Present in over 130 countries, RE/ Max has about 220 agents in India, half of whom are in Gujarat.

Agency : New Delhi India on Monday said all future negotiations for purchase of French Rafale fighters would be through government to government route, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said today, discarding direct talks with manufacturers. The disclosure came two days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced purchase of 36 Rafale fighter aircraft in fly-away condition from the French government directly, sidestepping a gruelling three-year negotiations for the Medium Multi-Role

Combat Aircraft(MMRCA) tender. While initially the tender was valued at about USD 10 billion for 126 aircraft, the current price is estimated to be over USD 20 billion, over which India had serious reservations. Noting that negotiations had en-

tered into a "loop" or a "vortex" with no solution in sight, Parrikar said direct negotiations with France will now decide how much more Rafale aircraft has to be bought and whether it will be under 'Make in India' programme. The Minister

refrained from giving a direct reply to questions whether the requirement of Air Force for more MMRCA will be through Rafale or if any other player can come into action. "Scope was only possible in Government to Government deal. Instead of going through the Request for Proposal (RFP) route where there was lot of confusion and chaos, it was decided that we will go through the G2G route," he said explaining that 36 Rafale jets would be procured in ready-to- fly condition.

Congress clamps virtual gag order on partymen With some senior leaders opposing Rahul Gandhi's elevation, Congress Monday put a virtual gag order on partymen asking them not to air their views outside party fora on the likely successor to party chief Sonia Gandhi. "Change is party of life....Obviously any organisation changes and evolves...If anyone wants to voice an opinion or idea, he should ideally do it in party fora. I request everyone that they should speak within the party fora ", party spokesman Ajoy Kumar. Kumar said any change could be done only after deliberations on the issue by Sonia Gandhi and the party working committee . It will be carried out under the well laid down procedure under the party constitution. "Both Sonia and Rahul are our leaders. Both have led the party in difficult situations. Changes happen in any organisation. Whenever the time for organisational change will come, it will be done under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi and after consultations in the Working Committee". Deputy leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha Amarinder Singh, AICC General Secretary Ambika Soni as also party spokesman Sandeep Dikshit, son of former Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit, have made a strong pitch for continuance of Sonia as the party chief. "You cannot just make a generational change with a knife and cut them through. You have to gain experience by individually meeting people across the country and maintain people-topeople contact," Amarinder Singh had said. The former Punjab Chief Minister has insisted that people should gain experience and move upwards as "raw people cannot move upwards". Amarinder's known detractor and Punjab PCC Chief Pratap Singh Bajwa has accused him of attempting to scuttle party presidentship for Rahul, who is currently the party Vice President. Sandeep Dikshit had recently made it clear that Sonia Gandhi is the leader for 99 per cent of partymen and she is needed at the helm at this time more than ever in the past. His refrain has been that “Sonia Gandhi can transfer presidentship of the party to anyone, bequeath the presidentship to anyone she wants, but she cannot bequeath her leadership to anybody she wants”. Sonia Gandhi has created a record by being at the helm of Congress for 17 long years. Rahul, who is on a sabbattical for the past one-and-a- half months, will be addressing a farmer's rally being organised by the party at the historic Ram Lila maidan on April 19 on the eve of the second phase of Budget session of Parliament. This was stated by senior leader A K Antony when asked whether Rahul would be present at Mhow in Madhya Pradesh, the birthplace of B R Ambedkar, to celebrate his birth anniversary tomorrow. "Don't worry about him. He will be there on the 19th", Antony said when a questioner said that there was much concern over the absence of Rahul for long.

Chinese hackers target In- EPL: Manchester United boss Louis dia, Southeast Asia: FireEye Van Gaal rings in changing of the guard

Agency : New Delhi Hackers, most likely from China, have been spying on governments and businesses in Southeast Asia and India uninterrupted for a decade, researchers at internet security company FireEye said. In a report released on Monday, FireEye said the cyber-espionage operations dated back to at least 2005 and "focused on targets — government and commercial — who hold key political, economic and military information about the region." "Such a sustained, planned

development effort coupled with the (hacking) group's regional targets and mission, lead us to believe that this activity is state-sponsored — most likely the Chinese government," the report's authors said. Bryce Boland, chief technology officer for Asia Pacific at FireEye and co-author of the report, said the attack was still ongoing, noting that the servers the attackers used were still operational, and that FireEye continued to see attacks against its customers, who number among the targets.

Sahara supports Sebi's claim to bring $13-million to refund account

Agency : New York Engaged in a long-drawn legal battle with Sebi, Sahara has supported the regulator's claim before a US court to bring back nearly $13 million from sale proceeds of a business jet of the crisis-hit group. The group also lauded "Sebi's active cooperation" in the matter, which relates to a court-ordered sale of a corporate jet owned by a Sahara group firm after a litigation there and a receiver was appointed to look into distribution of the fund kept in an escrow account. While the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) had approached the Indianapolis court last month with a claim that funds need to be transferred to SebiSahara Refund Account, to

comply with a Supreme Court of India order, the demand was rejected by the US court because it was made beyond the stipulated timeframe and was not in accordance with its orders. However, the court had asked the receiver to verify the validity of the claim and take a decision accordingly. Reacting to the development, a Sahara group spokesperson said today in a statement that Hospitality Business Limited, a Sahara Group company, had acquired a new Airbus A319 aircraft. “The aircraft was to be given to a UK-based operator on a long-lease contract for operation as a luxury executive jet for private charters. The aircraft was sent by Hospitality to Indianapolisbased Comlux for high-end interior design and cabin completion. On the claims made before the court for funds from the escrow account, Sahara said, “The receiver invited any third-party claims as ordered by the Indianapolis court.

"One of the turning points of the game was Morne dropping my catch. Apart from it, the other turning point came when I told Patel to hit one of the six off the last two deliveries off Narine's final over. He missed out on the first one and I told him to go again.
