News Brief We don’t chop and change the team: Bravo Agency : New Delhi, May 13

Chennai Super Kings have been a dominant side in the IPL over the years and all-rounder Dwayne Bravo feels the reason for their success is that they have stuck to a core set of players without much chopping and changing. Two-time champions CSK, who lost their previous game to laggards Delhi Daredevils, have won eight of their 13 matches to stay atop the points table so far. Bravo said the team has always been ready for challenges. “The most important thing is that we don’t chop and change the team. The management is doing a very good job, whether it’s in the auctions or selecting a playing XI. They try and stick to a core of players.

Is Modi’s dream of a China-like high-speed rail model worth it?

With Prime Minister Modi all set to land in Xian, the home town of Chinese President Xi Jingping, all eyes are on the major outcomes from this visit. The Railways is expected to be the most important driver of this visit. The two countries are expected to sign a major memorandum on expanding cooperation in the building of a high speed rail corridor between Delhi and Chennai. India Today Group’s Rahul Kanwal boarded a high speed train from Beijing to Xian to assess the advantages and disadvantages of adopting China’s high speed rail model. This is an India Today Group exclusive. For the People’s Republic of China, building the world’s largest super-fast rail network has been closely linked to the country’s booming global ambition. In the early 1990s, the average passenger train in China ran at a speed of only 48 kilometres per hour. The roads were badly congested and the people were forced to fly even for short journeys. It was in 1999 that China began building its first high-speed rail corridor. Within 15 years, China has already built a national network that is bigger than all the high-speed corridors of the world put together. On the other hand, at the time of Independence, India’s rail network was nearly 54,000 km, while China’s rail network was only 27,000 km - half of India’s rail network. But since then, China has nearly quadrupled its rail network to about 1,10,000 km; India on the other hand has barely added 11,000 km of tracks in the same period. Ironically, back in the late 19th century, the Indian Railways was laying tracks in different parts of Africa and even surveying potential rail routes to China through Burma. But now the Chinese have left us far behind and the Indian railways has been left with a lot of catching up to do. When PM Modi announced his quest for a high-speed rail corridor linking India’s biggest cities, questions were asked about whether it was worth spending the kind of money that is required to fund this expensive dream. Even in China, a hot debate had raged over whether or not it was worth investing huge sums of money on a project that could not be afforded by a majority of the people in the country. According to conservative estimates, the total cost of funding China’s high speed rail corridor has been upwards of a whopping $300 billion in the past decade and a half. China’s early high-speed trains were imported or built under technology transfer agreements with foreign train makers such as Alstom, Siemens, Bombardier and Kawasaki Heavy Industries. Chinese engineers then re-designed the internal train components and built indigenous trains with the ability to reach operational speeds of up to 380 kmph. The average speed on these trains at present is 200 kmph.

3 / Dt. 14-05-2015, Thurseday HSBC cuts India to ‘underweight’ Agency : New Delhi In the first major downgrade for Indian markets in the past one year, global brokerage HSBC on Wednesday changed its stance on the country to “underweight”, saying corporate earnings may remain muted, monsoon could be weak and odds are against further rate cuts. HSBC further said that India has become the second most expensive and one of the most over-owned markets in Asia, after a strong rally on the back of reform optimism generated by the Modi government over the past one year. It upgraded its stance on markets like The Philippines and Hong Kong. “We lower our equity market weighting for India from overweight to underweight. Also, we

raise The Philippines to overweight from neutral and Hong Kong to neutral from underweight,” HSBC said in a research note. The downgrade comes at a time when Indian markets are already under acute pressure, primarily because of foreign investors turning heavy sellers on concerns related to the controversial MAT levy and delay in the ambitious indirect tax (GST) and land reforms. “Indian equities rallied and with lack of momentum in other markets, both global and regional mutual funds built historically high overweight positions in this market by the end of 2014,” HSBC said, adding that “we now challenge this position and recommend investors to underweight India (from our prior overweight position)”.

Agency : Bengaluru A lacklustre Bengaluru FC suffered another 1-3 loss at the hands of Indonesian club Persipura to end second in Group E of the AFC Cup football tournament at the Shree Kantirava Stadium on Wednesday. Starting from a 1-3 deficit in their away game in March, Bengaluru, who have booked their last-16 berth, once again faltered against the table-toppers, whose attack was just too good on the day. By the virtue of topping the group, Persipura will now host Bengaluru in the single-leg pre-quarterfinals clash. The Blues did draw first blood via an Udanta Singh strike in the 23rd minute but the visitors soon gained ground and kept up the pace.

Pieces from MH370 would be roughly 10 times as big

as that.” The jet, carrying 239 people on what was supposed to be a routine flight to Beijing from the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, disappeared on March 8 last year. Analysis of flight data, signals picked up from the plane and an unanswered satellite phone call from ground staff to the plane indicate the flight tracked south over the Indian Ocean, over the sea off the coast of Western Australia, where investigators believe it fell into the water after running out of fuel.

Cabinet Approves Stake Sales in Indian Oil, NTPC

Agency : New Delhi The government has approved the sale of shares in state-run oil refiner Indian Oil Corp and power producer NTPC as part of its plan to raise $11 billion (around Rs 69,500 crore) from asset sales this financial year. New Delhi will sell a 10 per cent stake in the oil refiner and 5 per cent in the power producer, a top government official told reporters after a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, asking not to be named. The planned share sales could fetch $2.17 billion at current market prices. The official did not say when the shares would be sold. The proceeds from the asset sale programme are critical for Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s plan to narrow the fiscal deficit to 3.9 per cent of gross domestic product in fiscal year 2015-16 that began in April. So far, the government has only raised about $250 million, after

offloading a 5 per cent stake in Rural Electrification Corp (REC) last month. Targets for revenue from partial privatisations have been missed for the past five years, so this year the government aims to spread the stake sales out rather than bunch them up towards the end of the fiscal year, as normally happens. However, a sell-off in Indian shares could pose a challenge for the asset sale programme. The Nifty has fallen as much as 12.3 per cent from the record high hit in March amid worries over the slow pace of reforms as well as a controversial tax imposed on foreign investors. Still, Aneesh Srivastava, chief investment officer at IDBI Federal Life Insurance, expects the share sales to get a good response if priced right. “Pricing is key for divestment,” he said. “At the right price, these issues should go through.”

I have a natural outswinger and I am working more on that. I have also

Pandey also credited Chennai skipper MS Dhoni for supporting him at every juncture and backing him. “He is very good.

he isn’t as conservative as many feared he would be. There’s still much for Strauss to do if he is to restore the fortunes of English cricket, with an Ashes series less than two months away. England has never had an Australian as coach but that could be about to change just in time for the Ashes. Former Australia paceman Jason Gillespie is the

favorite to replace Moores after leading Yorkshire from the second tier of the English county game to champions in three years. Two more Australians, Justin Langer and Tom Moody, are potential candidates, while the current temporary England coach, Paul Farbrace, could also come into contention if he impresses in the upcoming two-test series against New Zealand. Strauss says the new coach English or foreign will have an “over-arching” role in charge of both the Test and ODI teams, and a philosophy that needs to be aligned with Strauss and “the best interests of English cricket.”

Crime branch sleuths, who are assisting local police in the probe, then scanned the route of the bus from Ajmer. “We went through CCTV footage from two high-

way hotels in which the deceased was seen with another man. It confirmed our doubt that Mustaq was not alone on the trip,” the official added. Police then tracked down family members of Mustaq from phone numbers stored in the cellphone found from him. “The family rushed to Ahmedabad but could not provide any clue to us about his dealings or threat to his life,” added the official.

Sunvilla News, Ahmedabad

A dismally low conviction rate of doctors and others violating the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act has prompted the state government to educate over 300 health officers and supervisors of Gujarat. The state health department with Gujarat Forensic Sciences University (GFSU), has formulated a two-day training programme under which officials will be trained on the procedure for collection of evidence. According to census 2011, for every 1,000 males, Gujarat has 919 females - much below the national sex

ratio of 940. For the age group 0-6 years, it is even lower, at 886. Officials want to curb sex determination which is primarily used to identify and abort female fetuses. “The process began started in January with batches having between 33 and 41 officers each every week. However, the outbreak of swine flu forced us to take a break so as not to burden the health officials already busy with work. We are happy that all the concerned officials responsible for enforcing PCPNDT Act will be properly trained by the end of May,” said a health department official.
