Soaring Food And Energy Prices Accentuate Cost Of Living Crisis India is entering into a major cost of living crisis due to multiple domestic and internationalcrises, which included soaring food and energy prices, rising poverty, joblessness,endangered food security, disincentive to farmers growing food articles, and lopsided policyinterventions. The way the government is responding to the issues lack holistic approach,and problems are being responded to on adhoc basis with little temporary success to lessnumber of people than really in need, which further contribute in exacerbating the cost ofliving crisis.For example, the food security report of 2022 has calculated cost of healthy diet in India in2020 to be 2.970 dollar per day, and the people unable to afford it were 70.5 per cent, ie973.4 million people. However, Modi government provisioned for only foodgrains for only800 million people while many other essential needs were unmet. Even then due tocorruption and other administrative failures, the foodgrains did not reach to all targetedpeople chiefly because millions of people did not have documents which government failedto supply. The two years of the pandemic has exacerbated the situation further and pushedan estimated 230 million into poverty. The price rise has further added several millions into it.The dimension of the cost of living crisis in India is thus unfathomable at present.Government have been in dark on the real time data about the demography, and now hasbeen caught napping by the revelation that its burden of population has been rising fasterthan the number of people it has been planned for. The Delhi High Court Wednesday allowed Chinese smartphone maker Vivo to operate its various bank accounts frozen by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money-laundering probe subject to furnishing of a bank guarantee of ₹ 950 crore within a week with the agency.Justice Yashwant Varma also directed the company to give details to ED about its remittances and issued notice to the investigating agency on Vivo’s plea seeking quashing of the order freezing its various bank accountsED contended that presently the proceeds of crime have been quantified to ₹ 1,200 crore.The high court also asked the company to maintain a balance of ₹ 251 crore in the bank accounts, which was there at the time of
freezing of the accounts, and the amount shall not be used till further orders.The court granted one week to the ED to file its response to the petition and listed the matter for further hearing on July 28.Besides seeking quashing of the freezing order, Vivo has sought permission to deal with its frozen bank accounts for making payments towards certain liabilities.The probe agency on July 5 raided several places across the country in the money laundering investigation against Vivo and related firms.
