Shweta Rathore became the first Indian female bodybuilder to win a silver medal in the 49th Asian championship, recently held in Uzbekistan. Shweta, an engineer by qualification, won silver in the Women’s Fitness Physique category and qualified for the World Championship, to be held in Thailand in November.

Rupee down 17 paise against dollar in early trade Agency | Mumbai

The rupee declined by 17 paise to 64.92 against the dollar in early trade today on increased demand for the US currency from importers. Besides, early losses in domestic equity markets weighed on the rupee, dealers said. The dollar was weak against major world currencies which capped rupee losses, they added. The rupee had shed 1 paisa to close at 64.75 against the US currency in the previous session.

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray met five of the six attackers who were arrested, and subsequently released on bail, for assaulting ORF chief Sudheendra Kulkarni. Thackeray met the Shiv Sainiks at his residence, Matoshree and spoke to them for close to 10 minutes. He praised them for ‘doing good work’ and asked them to continue doing so, according to

one of the attackers. The six — Gajanand Patil, Dinesh Prasad, Ashok Waghmare, Prakash Husbe, Samadhan Jadhav and Venkatesh Nair — were yesterday arrested and later released. Sena came under strong criticism from across the political spectrum, including its coalition partner BJP, for throwing black paint at Kulkarni. The party had earlier threatened to disrupt the book launch of

former Pakistan foreign minister Khurshid Kasuri, but no untoward incident was reported due to the high security at the event. Senior Sena leader leader Sanjay Raut said “smearing ink is a very mild form of democratic protest.” Sena’s mouthpiece ‘Saamana’ in an editorial compared Kulkarni with Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab. “The real threat to the sovereignty of our nation is not due to ex-

India hits back, says don’t need Pakistan lecture on pluralism Agency | New Delhi

India today lashed out at Pakistan for “lecturing” it on pluralism after Islamabad expressed concern over attempts to disrupt functions of its prominent personalities, and asserted that non-practice of terrorism was central to the betterment of the Indo-Pak relationship. “(As if) Pakistan is the embodiment of tolerance, pluralism. India does not need to take a lecture from Pakistan. If India has a shortcoming, it is capable of looking after it,” top official sources said. The Indian reaction came after Pakistan Foreign Office said

it “noted with concern attempts to disrupt functions organised in respect of prominent Pakistani personalities on visit to India” while referring to cancellation of a cultural event by gazal maestro Ghulam Ali and attempts to disrupt a function in Mumbai organised for its former Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasuri. “There

is a need to ensure that such incidents do not reoccur,” the Pakistan Foreign Office said. However, the sources said India still remains interested in NSA-level talks as per Ufa understanding but made it clear that terrorism cannot be an instrument of statecraft. “A lot of what has not gone as per Ufa is be-

cause of Pakistan’s domestic politics…. They are also having some disturbance. There are non-elected players in play. The dynamics of it is both complicated and less transparent. “The issue is that there has to be a recognition that terrorism cannot be an instrument of statecraft and you cannot say it was only Gurudaspur attack, why are you overreacting or an attack on BSF, why are you overreacting. “It cannot be a routine way. There has to be recognition that non-practice of terrorism is central to the betterment of the relationship.

tremists or terrorists, but people like Kulkarni. People like him are out to cut the neck of our nation.. When there are people like him present here, Pakistan does not

need to send people like Kasab for terrorist activities,” the Sena said in an editorial in party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’. The party also locked horns with Chief Min-

ister Devendra Fadnavis for criticising it, saying he had “failed to understand Maharashtra” and that his condemnation of the incident brought the state “a bad name”.

Black paint does not deter Kasuri book launch

Shiv Sena’s need to regain its increasingly threatened political space in Maharashtra appeared to rear its head again on Monday when some cadres smeared black paint on Sudheendra Kulkarni for hosting former Pakistan Foreign Minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri. Though the Sena shocked Mumbai’s liberal cosmopolitanism by defacing Mr. Kulkarni’s face with oil paint, the Devendra Fadnavis regime showed once again that when the government has adequate will, it is possible to rein in trouble-makers. Despite fresh threats by the Sena to intensify its protests, Mr. Kasuri’s memoir “Neither a Hawk Nor a Dove: An Insider’s Account of Pakistan’s Foreign Policy” was launched without any further incident. The police escorted Mr. Kasuri to the venue, and threw a three-tier security cover to prevent any further embarrassment to Chief Minister Fadnavis. Mr. Fadnavis, also the home minister, disapproved of the attack. “We may not agree with somebody’s views, but when a foreign dignitary or a diplomat arrives on a valid visa and holds a programme, it’s the duty of a state to provide protection.” Former Indian diplomats said incidents such as these tarnished the country’s image, besides hurting the “idea of India.” Earlier, former BJP leader Kulkarni, the chairperson of the Observer Research Foundation (ORF), an international policy think tank, was rendered virtually unrecognisable after some Sena activists stopped his car near his central Mumbai residence around 9.30 a.m., and smeared his face with paint. Undeterred, Mr. Kulkarni came to ORF’s south Mumbai office, and announced that he would not be cowed down by the attack and would continue with the book launch. The attack came after Mr. Kulkarni met Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray late on Sunday night to persuade the Sena to withdraw its agitation. Six persons, including Sena shakha pramukh Gajanan Patil, were arrested for their alleged role in the attack. If the murder of a Muslim man in Uttar Pradesh on September 28 on the suspicion of cow slaughter shook the nation’s conscience, the attack on centre-right thinker Sudheendra Kulkarni on Monday took many by surprise since it was an NDA constituent, the Shiv Sena, which was behind it. Sena activists smeared Mr Kulkarni’s face with black paint in protest against his decision to go ahead with the book launch of former Pakistan foreign minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri. The attack was so vicious — and probably unexpected — that it pushed senior BJP politician LK Advani, who incidentally had been quiet on the UP attack till now, to condemn it.

Nothing more is known about her role as of now,” a source from the film’s unit. Ratnam’s project, which features Nithya Menon as the female lead, has gone through lot of changes in the last couple of months. The project was initially planned as a Tamil revenge drama and was slated to go on the floors this December. Last month Ratnam decided to make it as a bilingual and pushed the film to next year, forcing actor Dulquer Salmaan, who was earlier roped in to play the lead, to walk out of the project. Salman sang ‘Hangover’ for Kick last year and ‘Main Hoon Hero Tera’ for Hero this year. According to the sources, Sonu did not take the comment well. That resulted in canceling an entire segment, featuring Salman and Sonu, at the show. Refuting the story, Sonu Nigam said that he doesn’t know who cooked up the story in the first place.

Agency | Mumbai After facing immense struggle from family and outside due to her sexuality, Bobby Darling, who was born as Pankaj Sharma, is all set to tie the knot with Bhopal-based businessman Ramneek Sharma. Bobby confirmed the news, saying, “Yes I am getting married to Ramneek Sharma. It’s going to be a grand wedding but I don’t want to discuss much about it as of now”. Bobby-Ramneek will have a court marriage in

November, which will be then be followed by a starry wedding reception in Bhopal as well as in Mumbai. Bobby, who is a Limca Book of Records holder for playing 18 roles as gay men at the age of 23, wasn’t initially accepted by her family. On TV show ‘Sacch Ka Saamna’, she resorted with her father. Bobby’s mother had passed away when she was young. Bobby has been homosexual since childhood and in 2010 has undergone surgery for breast implant.

Vaani Kapoor has been confirmed to play the lead opposite Ranveer Singh in Aditya Chopra’s passion project after 7 years, Befikre. Chopra has decided to sit on the director’s chair after a long time and has zeroed in on Singh and Kapoor to be his protagonists. Now, we don’t know what the film is all about but we are sure it will be something really amazing for Chopra to direct it. But we feel there is something common between his heroine Vaani and his earlier find Anushka Sharma. In fact, there is a possibility that Vaani’s career graph might mirror NH10 babe’s one. You might not get it instantly but if

you take a closer look at it, the similarities will surface and you will be pleasantly surprised to notice that. Let us steer you toward the right direction. That’s perhaps the biggest common link between the two. For every newcomer, debut is of utmost importance as that sets the time for the future. And when you are launched by Yash Raj Films, you know things are only going to go grander. Anushka Sharma was launched by Aditya Chopra opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. It was a big launch for any newcomer. Vaani also got a YRF launch in Shuddh Desi Romance. Yes, she didn’t have SRK to make it starry but it made all the right noises. It is

always a great moment for any newcomer if he or she gets the opportunity to be in a film directed by Aditya Chopra who’s imprint on our lives is magnanimous, thanks to epic love saga Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Anushka is fortunate enough to debut in his film and obv i o u s l y, that has worked tremendously for her.

Ola ‘Share’ Social Ride-Sharing Feature Launched in Bengaluru

Agency | Bengaluru Taxi aggregator Ola announced the launch of its ‘Share’ social ride-sharing feature on its app on Tuesday. The Share carpooling feature, still in beta, is live on its mobile app and can be used by customers in Bengaluru at an introductory flat fare of Rs. 50, the company said. Ola Share uses advanced algorithms to match users who plan to travel on the same route in real-time, within users’ identified social groups. When a user selects his drop location, Ola will match users from common groups who are also looking for a cab on the same route in real time. Once additional users en-route are identified, the driver’s device gets an alert with navigation to their pickup location within minutes, to join the ride. A maximum of three people can share a cab together via Ola Share, the company said. “With Share, we not only bring economy, convenience and comfort of travelling with people in your circles, but also increased inventory utilisation of vehicles on the platform,” said Ishan Gupta, Head of Ola Share in an emailed statement.

Telcos can start spectrum trading as government issues guidelines Agency | New Delhi The government on Tuesday issued spectrum trading guidelines that allow telecom operators to procure radiowaves for mobile services from other companies to meet their requirements and improve service quality. Earlier, telecom operators had the only option to procure airwaves through an auction conducted by the Department of Telecom as per its own schedule. “The government has now decided to allow trading of access spectrum as per guidelines,” an official paper said. It is seen as an exit route for loss-making telcos and offers relief to those with a large subscriber base which need more spectrum. As per the guidelines, a telecom operator can sell the right to use spectrum to another operator either in part or full holding at the level of telecom circle. “All access spectrum bands earmarked for access services by the licensor (DoT) will be treated as tradable spectrum bands,” the guidelines said. Unlike spectrum sharing, the guidelines have restricted trading to presently allocated frequencies in 800 Mhz (being used for CDMA mobile services), 900 Mhz (2G and 3G), 1800 Mhz (2G and 4G), 2100 Mhz (3G), 2300 Mhz (4G) and 2500 Mhz (4G).

Virtually out of reckoning after four losses in a row, a beleaguered Indian football team would look to salvage some pride and put up a decent performance against higher-ranked Oman in a World Cup qualifying round match on Tuesday. India are without a win in their World Cup qualifying campaign, even losing to lower-ranked Guam and pressure has been piling on the players and coach Stephen Constantine who took up the job early this year. In the fiveteam group, India are yet to open account and have scored just three goals so far. They face an uphill task against Oman, ranked 102nd in FIFA charts as against the 167th of India,

Indian hockey going in right direction after New Zealand win: Oltmans Agency | New Delhi

Indian chief coach and high performance director Roelant Oltmans on Tuesday said the national hockey team’s bilateral series victory over New Zealand has proved that it is moving in the right direction. Asian Games 2014 champions India lost the first match but won the next two and drew the final match to claim the series 2-1. Prior to that they also defeated the host’s A side to mark a successful Kiwi tour. “The team performed exceptionally well in the New Zealand Tour which proves that our players are ready to take on greater challenges,” Oltmans said in a release. “The highlight was

“I was under direct orders from Chris Cairns to get involved in fixing in India.” Vincent, 36, said his descent to corruption began when he was dropped from the New Zealand team in 2007, and subsequently he suffered a meltdown. “It was my heart and my

life, [being dropped] hurt my heart,” he added. He said he was “excited” to sign a $US350,000 contract with the Chandigarh Lions in the ICL, where Cairns was the captain. At that stage he says he wasn’t interested in corruption or fixing matches.

Pak vs Eng 1st Test, Day 1: HafeezMalik stand puts Pakistan on top Agency | Abu Dhabi

Pakistan made a steady start to its opening Test match against England on Tuesday, reaching 82-1 at lunch. Post lunch, steered by Mohammad Hafeez and Shoib Malik, the hosts have reached 171 after the loss of one wicket. Malik marked his first international Test in more than five years with an unbeaten half-century and opener Hafeez, who was severe against debutant leg spinner Adil Raashid, fell short of his ninth Test century, when he was trapped in front by Ben Stokes. The pair have added 166 runs for the second wicket after Pakistan lost opener Shan Masood early, undone by a slow bouncer from James Anderson in the third over of the innings. The ball reared up and hit Masood’s helmet as he took his eyes off the ball, before ricocheting

drew half of their league games. “We are teams that keep a decent shape when we don’t have the ball and that makes it difficult to score against us,” said Peter Taylor, the Kerala Blasters’ coach. Both teams also go into their third match on four points. Everything points to an even contest between last year’s finalists and though stranger

Anderson could have had his second wicket in the seventh over of the match when Hafeez prodded at an away-going delivery and edged a simple catch to Ian Bell in second slips, only for the fielder to drop it. Pakistan made just 28 runs in the first hour, but gained some momentum in the second with the introduction of spin in the form of Rashid, who had given away 29 runs in his first six overs without posing much danger. Earlier, Pakistan captain Mis-

bah-ul Haq won the toss and elected to bat first. That advantage came after a major blow for Pakistan with star leg-spinner Yasir Shah unable to recover from the back injury he suffered while bowling at the nets on Monday. That left Pakistan with only one spinner, Zulfiqar Babar, and Pakistan is going into the match with three seamers - Wahab Riaz, Imran Khan and Rahat Ali. England, as expected, gave a debut to Rashid on a pitch that is expected to assist the spinners from day three onwards.

‘Maari dikri maari aankh saame’, ‘Maari dikri maari najar samaksh’ (My daughter before my eyes). That’s what the garba banners in Godhra say. To keep young women and girls “safe” from Muslim youth and ‘love jihad’ during the Navratri festivities, the BJP and RSS affiliates are urging Godhra residents to organise the traditional or sheri garba to restrict entry and “maintain the purity of the event”. Ashish Bhatt, former VHP member who now heads the cultural cell of the Panchmahals district unit of the BJP, said: “Last year, we tried to keep out Muslims from venues of large, professional garba events to prevent love jihad. But we had little control over the entrants since such events

are mostly for business purpose. Anyone can enter after purchasing a ticket.” “To ensure safety of our mothers, sisters and daughters, we have encouraged residents to organise traditional garba so that the purity of the event is maintained,” Bhatt said. An estimated 40 per cent of Godhra’s population — the epicentre of the 2002 Gujarat riots — is Muslim. Last year, a little-known Hindu organisation, Hindu Asmita Hit Rakshak Samiti, decided to stop Muslim youths

from entering garba venues to “avoid instances of love jihad”. Sheri garba is the traditional way of dancing in a small circle, usually on the streets and lanes of a residential colony where most participants know each other. The Sheri Garba Samvardhan Samiti, an organisation formed in Godhra last year, has managed to persuade residents in favour of the sheri garba — 39 such events are being organised across Godhra as against one commercial garba event this year.

The court turned down a plea by senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who recalled that the same two-judge bench had on September 11 extended their interim bail till October 15. Appearing for Teesta and Javed, Sibal questioned why the same order cannot be passed now, to which the bench shot back: “Ear-

When Sibal said the period of bail would expire Thursday and hence the court should pass an order considering the urgency of the case, the bench shot down his

Although the plea against postponement of the local body polls is sub-judice, many senior BJP leaders believe elections to district and taluka panchayats will be held by the year end.
