News Brief Little 'Arvind Kejriwal' delights crowd at Ramlila New Delhi, Feb 14 Arvind Kejriwal's swearing-in ceremony at the Ramlila Maidan had a special guest today-- a little 'Arvind Kejriwal'. Dressed up in a maroon V-necked sweater and a black muffler and sporting a false moustache, four-year-old Fairy Tomar looked like Kejriwal in a mini avatar. Fairy, whose parents are avowed AAP supporters, have been closely following the AAP leader and antigraft crusader Anna Hazare.

well as Amreli district, a release issued by the state government said here. 159 fresh cases of swine flu were recorded across the state, taking the total number to 1,392 cases, it said. Besides following standard procedures of treatment, the Gujarat state government has also begun distribution of ayurvedic and homoeopathic medicines to increase immunity against swine flu. According to a release, more than 1.60 lakh people have been given these medicines across the state. Voicing concern over rising cases of swine flu in

the country, Congress today accused the government of “criminal negligence” in the matter. AICC General Secretary Ajay Maken told reporters that instead of taking steps on a war footing to check the outbreak, government has slashed the budget of the Health ministry by Rs 6,000 crore. He claimed that there was paucity of vaccination and tablets for the treatment of the flu even in the national capital and protective gear for the doctors and nurses were hardly available. Claiming that there were no testing laboratories in

government hospitals, he said that patients are being charged in the range of Rs 5,000 to Rs 9,000 for the tests in private facilities. Maken also accused the government of failing to launch an awareness drive through the media to make people aware about the ‘dos and don’ts’. He lamented that this was happening at a time when there have been full page advertisements in newspapers “to promote personalities”. Latest reports say the death toll has risen to 485 with maximum number of casualties

New Delhi Arvind Kejriwal’s speech to Delhi soon after being sworn in as Chief Minister today (14 February) by the Lt Governor has many subtle messages embedded in it. But fundamentally he was trying to do two things: one was to lower and reset public expectations from him after the overwhelming mandate his party got; and the other was to stake out a future position for the Aam

Aadmi Party (AAP) in the national arena. The position would be as an alternative to the BJP in the “secular” space. Among the words we saw him use frequently were “ahankar” (arrogance or ego) and various synonyms for god – “Ishwar, Bhagwan and Khudrat”. Both have enormous significance. The “ahankar” he was talking about was what brought him down in the Lok Sabha

elections, and the same “ahankar” was what got the BJP and Narendra Modi badly burnt in the recent Delhil elections. Kejriwal’s references to “ahankar” were a tacit realisation that the unexpectedly large mandate given to him was as much the result of the BJP’s gross mistakes as the AAP’s own positive programmes. He knows that the public can as soon turn against him – as it did

over the country from January 1 to February 12 which has claimed the lives of 485 people. Gujarat has recorded

the second highest number of deaths due to swine flu after Rajasthan. In Gujarat, 117 people have died of swine flu

with the state reporting 1,233 cases while Rajasthan has seen the maximum 130 deaths with 1,631 cases.

Rajkot

reported from Rajasthan and Gujarat. Maken also announced a free vaccination camp for AICC reporters from tomorrow. rime Minister Narendra Modi is believed to have been briefed by Health Minister J P Nadda today on the spurt of swine flu cases in the country after the the number of casualties due to the disease touched 485. Although, there was no official word about what transpired in the meeting, sources said Nadda met Modi right after the Union Cabinet meeting in the morning at South Block to update and brief him about the swine flu situation. “There was an appointment of the Health Minister with the Prime Minister right after the Cabinet,” a source in the Health Ministry said. The meeting comes after 6,298 cases have been reported all

in the Lok Sabha elections – as it turned against BJP this time. He knows that getting 67/70 seats in the assembly is no guarantee that the public will always be with him. His references to “Ishwar”, “Bhagwan” and “Kudrati karishma” is yet another acknowledgement that while AAP worked really hard for this victory, it could not have made such a huge splash without luck playing its part. It is also his way of saying “touch wood.” In India’s history, parties which received extraordinary mandates have always been in trouble two years later. Cases in point: Indira Gandhi after her 1971 victory, the Janata party after its 1977 mandate, and Rajiv Gandhi after his 1984 sweep. Modi’s mandate in 2014, in contrast, is smaller than all of them, and especially in comparison to Kejriwal’s this month.

PM Narendra Modi showers praises on Sharad Pawar

Mumbai Prime Minister Narendra Modi who lashed out at Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar six months ago?showered praises on Pawar on Saturday, claiming that even if they are from two different parties and have two different ideologies, their aim is one—India’s progress.

Modi was speaking in Baramati, hometown of Pawar around 110km south of Pune after inaugurating agricultural technology centre on Saturday. Barely six months ago in Baramati, while addressing a campaign rally for the 15 October assembly polls in Maharashtra, Modi had asked voters to overthrow

the regime of the unclenephew duo (referring to Pawar and his nephew Ajit Pawar, former deputy chief minister of the state) from Baramati. He had also called the NCP a naturally corrupt party. The Barmati assembly seat is being represented by member of the Pawar family since 1967 and the Lok Sabha seat since 1991. Currently Ajit Pawar represents the Baramati assembly segment while the Lok Sabha seat is represented by Supriya Sule, Sharad Pawar’s daughter. Praising Pawar, Modi said, “I keep talking with Pawar at least twice or thrice a month and we exchange notes on various issues faced by the country.

Ramlila Maidan preparations ahead of Kejriwal's swearing-in

New Delhi Exactly a year after his 49day government came down, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal will take oath as Delhi's chief minister at the Ramlila Maidan on Saturday, an event that will be watched by tens of thousands of cheering supporters and some

dignitaries. Civic authorities have spruced up the venue for the event that will begin at 11 am. The venue will have half a dozen entry gates with over 5,000 security personnel standing guard in the wake of Kejriwal's request to people to ensue record footfalls at his oathtaking ceremony. Arrangements have been

made for over 50,000 people to witness the swearing-in. Nearly 30,000 chairs have been placed in 12 enclosures while over 20,000 people will be able to stand at the rear. According to Delhi Police, more than 60,000 people can be accommodated at the ground that will be under the prying eyes of 600 CCTVs. A 16-feet wide dais has been set up for the event. Officials said flowerpots and plants have been placed around the main stage to add colour to the ambience. They said that red carpet will cover the staircase leading to the dais. Big screens have been placed on the ground to enable people at a distance to get a closer view of the proceedings.

The dirty secret of Indian politics that neither the AAP nor the BJP are debating The mysterious Rs2 crore ($323,000) that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) received in donations last year has triggered a frenzied search for answers. Where did this money come from and how could a party founded on principles of economic transparency accept this cash? For now, the issue has become a game of news cycles. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress are trying their best to ensure that the focus stays on the money trail for as long as possible. Meanwhile, the AAP has attempted to distance itself from the recipients and wants to deflect the argument to a case of the pot calling the kettle black. In the heat of the Delhi elections, no one is debating the dirty secret of Indian elections: Political funding—or to be more specific, disclosure of interest. Till now the relationship between money and politics has been similar to that between an alcoholic and his bottle. Public in denial but impossible to live without. The fantastic amounts of money required to fight a competitive campaign make it important for everyone to know where the money is coming from. Historically, parties were financed by contributions from friends, family and supporters or philanthropic grants. While corporate donations were legal, The Representation of the People’s Act (pdf) in 1951 created limits on how much could be spent by a candidate. It was only in 1968 that corporate donations to political parties were banned. While the official response explained that it was to prevent black money in politics and from corporate funding subverting common interests, the popular view has been that the move was to block the rise of C Rajagopalachari’s Swatantra Party and its right-wing economic agenda. To promote transparency in funding, in 1979, political parties were permitted to claim exemptions from income and wealth taxes, as long as they filed returns listing donations of Rs10,000 and above, along with disclosing the identity of the donors. But tax exemption was not a significant enough incentive to disclose funding. In 1985, the Companies Act once again allowed corporates to fund political parties, subject to disclosure in accounts and donation not exceeding 5% of the average net profit for the last five years. To bolster disclosure of donations, corporate funders were given income tax exemptions. However, there is a greater interest in maintaining funding anonymity rather than taking advantage of tax exemptions. In a fragmented political landscape, entities may not want to be associated with any one party. Moreover, the sources of funds are often illegitimate. This has created a vicious cycle of political funding: Funding received through numerous small value donations—or in some cases, the funds being provided to numerous associated entities that remain off the books of the political parties. For example, the Bahujan Samaj Party has never had any funding above Rs20,000. Nearly 90% of the Congress’ income and 75% of the BJP are through donations below the disclosure limit—and therefore not accounted for. And some industries, especially construction, have shown a high correlation to electoral periods. A 2011 study of cement usage in India showed that “cement consumption does exhibit a political business cycle,” corroborating the quid pro quo relationship between the industry and politicians.

Best to ignore: Radhika Apte on fake nude selfies Radhika Apte was caught by surprise upon seeing some of her fake photographs doing the rounds on the Internet and Whatsapp. While she admits this is a peril of celebrityhood, the "Badlapur" actress says such incidents are best ignored. The controversial photographs are naked selfies, and Radhika has stated that "anyone with a

sane eye knows that it's not me". Agreeing that matters like these are a "downside" of being in the public domain, Radhika told IANS: "One just has to learn to not get affected by it. The crass public mentality of looking at women, combined with utterly cheap and sensational journalism does give rise to such news and issues. "Of course I wouldn't deny that some people in the public domain do this as a publicity stunt, which is equally mindless. Unfortunately, as a part of the field, one has to face it even if one doesn't fit into

any of these categories. That's just how it is in our country at the moment." How does an artiste safeguard himself or herself from morphing and photoshopping? "I don't think there is anything one can do or one should do, but ignore it. Anything else is a waste of your time," added the actress, who has also featured in movies like "Rakta Charitra" and "Shor In The City". Radhika, who will also feature in "Hunterrr", however, does not wish to take any action against the fake pictures.

When Gautam Gulati and Alia Bhatt came together

Remember how Gautam Gulati had gone on records claiming that he wants to work with Alia Bhatt? Seems all his prayers have come true as the duo shot for an episode of Farah Ki Daawat at Yash Raj studios on Friday. Farah Khan who hosted the Bigg Boss Halla

Bol series will now be seen donning the apron as she cooks up some interesting and delicious recipes for her audience. The food based chat show will have celebrities coming in and joining Farah, not to mention, also cook with her. After Abhishek Bachchan

Farah, who loves cooking is extremely excited to take up the show. “I love cooking because it is quite calming and therapeutic. And by virtue of being a complete foodie, I also love feeding the people around me. My friends always tell me that I am a fabulous cook and have the ability to gain people’s unwavering attention" Farah Khan took to Twitter to share an adorable picture of Alia and Gautam shooting with her. Gautam who was excited to be on the show with his favourite Alia tweeted about the same.

Anurag Kashyap's song I am a hunter from Gangs of Wasseypur was a leading chartbuster. So while the production house was brainstorming on names for

a film they were producing, they borrowed the name from this song. They all mutually loved the title and zeroed on Hunterrr. While they had varied name

suggestion, Hunterrr was something which was resonating the most with the essence of the film. However, when they got into formalities of registering the title they realized the name was already registered with Sohail Khan. After more brainstorming sessions, they were yet unable to find a more fitting name for the film and that is when they decided to approach and request Sohail Khan for the title. Sohail generously gave away the registered title to them. In fact, he fleetingly read the script and quite enjoyed it. Says Vikas Bahl, "Sohail is one of the most generous people I've met in my life and one of my dearest friends. So even before I could complete my sentence, requesting for the title, he happily gave it to us..and we are so thankful to him for it as we were really struggling to get the right title for the film."

Jacqueline Fernandez clueless about 'Kick' sequel

The Mumbai civic agency has started the process of demolishing an illegal ramp outside actor Shah Rukh Khan's residence Mannat. The Mumbai civic agency had earlier directed that the steel ramp outside Shah Rukh Khan's bungalow Mannat from which he addresses his fans in

suburban Bandra be demolished. The order followed a letter by Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Mumbai North Central Poonam Mahajan to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) over the illegal parking ramp outside the actor's

bungalow. The complaint letter stated the ramp, which the actor uses to greet his fans and park his vanity van, has become a nuisance, as hundreds of his fans stand on the road outside, leading to traffic chaos and causes inconvenience to the neighbours.

However, she hopes for the sequel soon."I don't know anything (about Salman writing 'Kick' sequel).... I don't know if it ('Kick' sequel) has been conceptualised or not, or if there is a script for 'Kick' sequel," Jacqueline said here on Friday during the promotion of her latest release "Roy". "But I hope so, as the first one did very well," she added. The buzz in the tinsel town states that Salman will write the story and screenplay of the film. The sequel of 'Kick' is based on Salman Khan's idea and it's tentatively named 'Devil'. Impressed with Salman's idea, the director asked him to pen down script for the movie. Salman Khan starrer 'Kick', was a huge hit in 2014. The film raked in Rs 225.1 crore at the box office, while it minted Rs 366.72 crore globally. Helmed by Sajid Nadiawala, 'Kick' also starred Jacqueline Fernandez, Randeep Hooda and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in pivotal roles.

Man Finds Easy Hack to Delete Any Facebook Photo Album

A security researcher doing a little investigation on his own time came across a serious flaw in Facebook: Any photo album could be deleted with just four little lines of code. Laxman Muthiyah blogs about his discovery in a post titled “How I Hacked Your Facebook Photos,” and shares how he came across this major error. Muthiyah writes that he was playing around with Facebook’s API when he began to wonder what would happen if you wanted to delete other people’s pictures without their permission. To solve his

question, His first attempt involved using the graph explorer access token to delete a photo album, but this received an error message. Although the action could not be carried out, the error message implied that there was a way to delete an album. Using his Facebook for mobile access token, Muthiyah again attempted to delete his album. And it worked. After deleting his own album, he moved to a “victim’s” album and tried to delete it, and that worked too, exposing a major flaw in the system.

ICC accepts umpiring error on Anderson run-out

Australia's phenomenal performance in their first match in the World Cup underlined why so many expect them to be returning to the MCG in six weeks' time to duel for the trophy. They showed grit to steady from a precarious 3-70, flair to surge to 9-342 from their 50 overs, and then utter ruthlessness with the ball and in the field to leave England reeling at 6-92, including the wicket of losing captain Eoin Morgan for a

third consecutive duck versus Australia, to the delight of the vast majority of the crowd of 84,336. From that point, the 22nd over, England's only realistic incentive was survival, to limit the net run-rate damage with which they will be saddled. Most plaudits with the bat were owing to Aaron Finch, whose 135 was especially galling for England because he was dropped on zero by Chris Woakes. Finch and George

Bailey (55 off 69) got Australia back on track with a stand of 146. Even though both departed by the 39th over, they had ensured Australia had sufficient. Then at the death Glenn Maxwell (66 off 40) and Brad Haddin (31 off 14) ensured the scoring rate did not flag. They were primarily responsible for Australia amassing 105 runs in the last 10 overs to lift them to their highest MCG score, and the sixth best anywhere at home.

New Zealand conditions suit India World Cup 2015: Sri Lanka’s more than Australia: Amarnath miserable run in Kiwi-land continues

Former India cricketer Mohinder Amarnath believes that conditions in New Zealand will suit Indian batsmen better than those in Australia at the 2015 World Cup which starts on Saturday. "The conditions in New Zealand will provide Indian batsmen more opportunity and options. It will suit their style because New Zealand wickets though they may seem so are not as quick as Australian wickets. Plus

smaller grounds will come handy for Indian batsmen," Amarnath, who was part of the 1983 World Cupwinning India squad, told IANS in an interview. India play their first four World Cup league fixtures in Australia, after which they travel to New Zealand to play two matches against minnows Ireland and Zimbabwe March 10 and 14, respectively. Amarnath, who is famously known for clinching the World Cup-

winning wicket in the 1983 final against the West Indies, said one of the reasons for India's failure in Australia has been the inability of the batsmen to adjust to the conditions Down Under."The way Indian players bat against quick bowlers, specially in Australia, they have not been able to adjust to the pace and bounce. Probably they are trying to play too many shots which they have not been able to play successfully because of their style, balance and technique," said the 64year-old, who was Man-ofthe-Series at the 1983 World Cup.India have been in Australia for more than two-and-a-half months during which they lost the four-match Test series 0-2, lost all games and failed to make the final of the One-Day International (ODI) tri-series against Australia and England. More recently, they were once again hammered by Australia in a World Cup warm-up fixture by 106 runs.

Indian bowling won’t lack bite due to Ishant’s absence: Sourav Ganguly

James Taylor was denied a maiden international century by an umpiring error as Australia opened their World Cup campaign with a crushing defeat of England. "Following Australia's 111-run win over England in the Group A ICC Cricket World Cup clash at Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday night, the Playing Control Team (PCT) met and reviewed the final ball of the game which resulted in James

Raising temperatures ahead of the much awaited IndiaPakistan Cricket World Cup opener, Indian cricket team opener Rohit Sharma has insisted that the pressure would be on Pakistan rather than them in their opening

rivals Pakistan. Sharma said that they know what they have to do to be at their best, insisting that the pressure would be on Pakistan. He claimed that Pakistan are the ones who have not won a game against India in the World Cup, insisting that his side would try and use it to their advantage, News.com.au reported. However, Pakistan have won the 1992 World Cup in Australia. India lost 2-1 at home to Pakistan two years ago and by one wicket in their Asia clash showdown at Dhaka last March where Rohit contributed a half-century. However, India crushed Pakistan by eight wickets in their rain affected Champions Trophy meeting in June 2013, the report added.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly does not think Indian bowling would lack any bite in absence of senior-most speedster Ishant Sharma who has been ruled out of the Cricket World Cup because of a knee injury. “One player’s absence won’t make much of a difference. The rest will also have to bowl well,” said the cricketer-turnedcommentator in Kolkata, before flying to Australia for the ICC World Cup commencing on Saturday. Ishant apparently sustained the injury during the Boxing Day Test and went on to

miss the final Test of the fivematch series that India lost 0-2. The bowling department has come in for a lot of flak in the difficult build up to the World Cup and Indian ace seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar also appears to be carrying some niggle in his ankle. Citing example of Aussie skipper Michael Clarke, the 41-year-old cricketer said unlike a batsman it’s difficult

for a bowler to come back in shape quickly. “I don’t think Ishant hid his injury. When a player gets injured, you give him time to recover. Michael Clarke has recovered. He (Clarke) could recover because he’s a batsman. He might not have, if he was a bowler. There’s a difference between a batsman and bowler,” said Ganguly. Batting too is yet to click as a whole, something that became apparent in the Triseries with Australia and England that followed the Test series as India lost three consecutive matches in the build-up to the mega event.

It was inevitable. Sri Lanka losing another match against New Zealand in New Zealand. It has been 57 days since they landed in the Kiwi-land and have played Tests and ODIs. But this loss will matter more than any of the previous ones. A World Cup opening match sets your momentum for the tournament and Sri Lanka were on the wrong side of it. (Full Coverage| Venues | Fixtures) New Zealand on the other hand showed that

they have done their homework and they have a team that is ready for every challenge. In this World Cup, they have become the favourites from their traditional tag of dark horses. When captain Angelo Mathews won the toss and elected to bowl first on an overcast day, bowlers should have backed the decision and provided their captain an early breakthrough. But Brendon McCullum had

other plans. He blasted 59 off 46 balls, all thanks to some list-less bowling. Their frontline pacer, Lasith Malinga failed and how dearly. He conceded 84 runs from his 10 overs while Nuwan Kulasekara conceded 78 from eight overs. Malinga conceded more than 80 runs in an ODI for the sixth time on Saturday. It is surprising because no other bowler has done that more than thrice.

Chinkara filming case: Gujarat HC adjourns hearing on Aamir Khan’s plea Ahmedabad The Gujarat High Court today adjourned the hearing on a petition filed by Bollywood actor and producer Aamir Khan and four others in a case related to alleged filming of chinkara, a protected animal, during the shooting for his 2000 blockbuster `Lagaan’. Justice R D Kothari posted the matter for next hearing on February 20 as Additional Advocate General P K Jani, representing Gujarat government, sought time. The High Court had, on June 27 last year, initiated final hearing on Aamir’s petition filed in April 2008. The petition seeks quashing of proceedings started by a judicial magistrate in Bhuj district against Khan and four others for breach of Wildlife

(Protection) Act. The complaint in this regard had been filed by the Forest Department. Under the Act, commercial filming of chinkara without permission is illegal. `Lagaan’ had been shot in Kutch district. The judicial magistrate issued bailable warrants against Khan, his former wife Reena Dutta, director Ashutosh Gowarikar, executive director Srinivas Rao and cinematographer Ashok

Mehta. But they secured a stay from the High Court. According to petitioners, they used computer-generated images of the animal and not real shots; a real chinkara was never filmed as the permission was denied. The Forest Department had earlier closed the case but it was reopened after a fresh complaint was filed by Amit Jetha, an RTI activist. Jetha was killed in 2010, allegedly by the mining mafia.

AHMEDABAD A godown of scrap material was gutted in a major fire on Friday morning at AEC crossroads in Naranpura. A team of Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) doused the flames after four hours of firefighting. Investigators said the primary reason for the incident could be a shortcircuit in an electric points on the premises. According to AFES officials, they got a call about a fire in a godown owned by a private waste-collection company near Rabari Vasahat at AEC flyover in Naranpura at 12 noon. Initially, two vehicles were sent by AFES on the basis of the primary reports but soon the fire spread to

the inflammable material including paper, plastic and empty chemical barrels at the premises as three firefighters and nine tankers were deployed. Rajesh Bhatt, additional chief fire officer, AFES, said that the primary cause of fire is suspected to be an electric short-circuit. Our priority was to prevent the fire and flames from spreading to adjoining residential areas and thus the team remained at the spot even after the flames were doused," he said.
